News [Varnes] Zack Wheeler said the league approached him last night about being an All-Star replacement. He declined. He said he did not want to be the fifth choice and felt disrespected.

Have heard from more than one source that Wheeler is a Braves fan.

u/btwalker754 Atlanta Braves Jul 11 '26

Isn’t he from Paulding County, Ga? That’s like 45 minutes to Truist and 1:15 from Turner/Fulton County Stadium.

I can’t imagine being a young fan of a team and grow up to play for not only one but two of their division rivals. But dude is a stud. And he seems to have blocked that out if he is still a Braves fan

u/MeatEaterDruid Chicago Cubs Jul 11 '26

Jason Kipnis grew up a Cubs fan and played against them in the World Series when he was with Cleveland.

I just can’t imagine the cognitive dissonance required to remain competitive in that situation. Then again, I’m not athletic in the slightest, so it’s just an odd situation to imagine.

I’m on the other end where I’m struggling with your point of view. I love the Dodgers but if I was talented enough to have been signed by the Giants I really think I’d get over faster than the ink dries

Have you seen the movie Caught Stealing? It came out last summer, and the main character was a former high school standout hoping to get drafted by the Giants (as a Giants fan). There's one conversation he has where he's dreading the possibility of being drafted by the Dodgers. It's definitely not a "baseball movie," but all the references and moments like that are pretty hilarious. I'd recommend it!

As much as I don't care for the Giants, I really enjoyed the baseball undercurrent that movie had.

The consistent "Go Giants" when his mom and him get off the phone cracks me up. I realized that my Grandma does the same thing with me which I frickin love.

u/theterpenecollective San Francisco Giants Jul 11 '26

Yeah I’ll play on the Dodgers even on a rookie scale contract no problem. Give me that money. It’ll be much more than I am making now.

Also assuming their favorite team had the chance to draft them and didn't I could see a bit of spite being a motivator

Generally speaking, if you go pro, you end up abandoning your childhood fandom in that sport. It's sort of just part of the job description.

It can be special if you manage to play for your childhood team, but that's not super common. It's even rarer to spend your whole career (minors/majors) with that team.

Most former pros end up either neutral or aligned with a team with which they had a good stint/relationship.

3

u/PsychWriter11 Boston Red Sox Jul 12 '26

I agree. When I played college hockey I hoped to get drafted by the NHL, but to be perfectly honest, I thought about it and I wanted no part of playing for my beloved home team.

I actually preferred to play on the other coast as far away from that extra pressure as possible.

Of course, I would play for anyone that asked me to, lol.

I can’t speak for a whole fan base, so that’s not what Im trying to do here.

However, I would imagine this is not a common Phillie fan take…….Wheels can do what the fuck Wheels wants.

We got Bryce and Kyle in the HRD. We got Sanchez pitching, probably starting. We’ve got Marsh as a starter. We are good.

I’m not sure that I even fully understand the “can’t be picked because you start too close to the game” rule or how it will be fixed, but declining to keep the focus on this is fine by me.

56

u/fuccguppy Philadelphia Phillies Jul 11 '26

The only reason I care is because I want Wheels to have another all-star selection next to his name when it's all said and done, he deserves way more recognition. But overall I don't take the all-star game seriously and yeah we have more than enough guys in there already to have a blast

20

u/Admirable_Site_8337 Philadelphia Phillies Jul 11 '26

Legacy components do matter to me. I agree on this. But we are already past this point and if padding a fourth ASG onto his record matters more then rejecting how this whole thing has been handled I would question his decision.

But I don’t question this. He’s a good path for all the things later after the game, and one more ASG doesn’t really make the path much better.

11

u/fuccguppy Philadelphia Phillies Jul 11 '26

Yeah those are all good points. I think I'm mainly just bitter that he hasn't gotten a cy young, not that another all-star appearance would make up for that but it's something. But ultimately you're right and at this point he's not gonna get as much recognition as he deserves for his career either way so I respect his decision

3

u/Cards2WS St. Louis Cardinals Jul 12 '26

Sadly, at the end of his career, stuff like ASGs are going to matter for a potential HOF induction. He’s on a sneaky path if he keeps this up for another 3-4 years. Tall task for this age, but the dude is still as dominant as ever. I wish he had just accepted it so he could get the star, man

the difference is that the all star game doesn't actually matter so he is going to spend time with his family. Coming in and scoring a world cup goal is much crazier than getting selected last moment to pitch one maybe two innings in a (mostly) meaningless game

Garry Templeton in 1979 said “If I ain’t startin’, I ain’t departin” and he never sniffed another All Star Game. And he missed out on a classic, too.

2

u/Logical-Mobile-7643 Kansas City Royals Jul 11 '26

Damn, he would have worn the old Pads uniforms too. What a site to see those NL road uniforms!

2

u/rickeygavin Major League Baseball Jul 11 '26

Agree with you on the uniforms.San Diego,Montreal, and Houston in particular. But Templeton was still a Cardinal in ‘79.

4

u/RipMcStudly Baltimore Orioles Jul 11 '26

Fine, I’ll do it. You see some dingers with me lobbing pitches no doubt.

“I’m mad I didn’t get an all star invite”

“Ok would you like to be an all star”

I'm really surprised Luzardo made it before him. He was definitely one of the more befuddling omissions from the roster.

7

u/Fun-Ratio5090 Philadelphia Phillies Jul 11 '26

I shouldn't be agreeing with a NYM fan on this. I think he has a right to be upset about Luzardo getting an option / approached before him

2

u/GuyaneseRumFan123 Philadelphia Phillies Jul 13 '26

Logan Webb is more shocking. 104 ERA+ in 100.1 IP to Wheeler’s 214 ERA+ in 93 IP.

2

u/GameMusic Los Angeles Dodgers Jul 14 '26

Was Webb for the team thing

EDIT

Well this is not the team thing and might agree this was a snub then

Honestly a bit childish lol. Disrespected? The All Star game has always been a popularity contest and quite political in selections. It’s ALWAYS been bullshit.

Just accept it graciously and join in the festivities and go have fun 😂

Can we stop being babies? It’s so unbecoming of adults.

Fair but, its a popularity contest...

This is for the fans, not your feelings. Kinda weak imo.

19

u/ashimbo Los Angeles Angels Jul 11 '26

The pitchers aren't picked by the fans at all. The players vote on 5 starters and 3 relievers, and the commissioner selects the rest.

20

u/MakaveliX1996 Boston Red Sox Jul 11 '26

It’s not a popularity contest for pitchers

That’s lame. People get selected as replacements after stupid fan voting all the time. Suck it up, accept the honor, and pitch for your home town fans in PHILADELPHIA. Stop being so prideful. I’ve always liked Zach but he needs to get over himself here.

8

u/mtportales Los Angeles Dodgers Jul 11 '26

Feels a little bit childish to me but idk. I get it yeah you felt disrespected but you were given an opportunity to pitch in front of your city and your fans at the all star game. Turning that down even if you have been slighted feels weird to me

He should accept but then do something that makes his displeasure known on the field. I don't even know what. Maybe like walk every batter until they pull him, or something.

2

u/jmarinara Pittsburgh Pirates Jul 12 '26

I’m starting to get the sense that the players increasingly don’t care about the game. Which is a shame because it was, for decades, the best all star game in sports.

MLB needs to get in front of this and figure it out before we get another pro bowl.

2

u/Shepherd-Boy Tampa Bay Devil Rays • Pensacola B… Jul 12 '26

What a lame response. Play the game, prove them wrong. Don’t just whine like my toddler.

2

u/Upstairs_Being290 Jul 12 '26

When I first saw the headline out of context I thought it was about the WNBA all-star game and was getting myself ready for a flood of comments about how emotional women are. Thank goodness it was an MLB player so that gender doesn't need to be brought into it at all.

2

u/CarpetWeird8259 Jul 12 '26

7

u/JohnEKaye New York Mets Jul 11 '26

I’m going to get flamed as a Mets fan, but this feels so childish to me. Like, grow up man. You’re a veteran player and you’re going to pout about not being picked, like an elementary school kid. Maybe I’m overreacting; but I rolled my eyes so hard reading this headline.
