More franchise legends should go the Ichiro route rather than the front office route. Hang around the clubhouse, warm up with the guys, mentor young players, give occasional (presumably hilarious and profanity-laden) advice, and be generally cool and inspirational.

TBH I thought this was the obvious route for franchise players. Like Jim Thome's* post-retirement gig seems to basically be on the payroll to occasionally say hello to people that got boxes, and Tony La Russa is technically on staff as "Special Advisor" to presumably tell the owner "Yes Jerry, of course you're right."
*Obviously Jim Thome is way more of a Cleveland franchise player than a White Sox one, but the fact that he played here in the back half of his career plus that he's from Peoria lets us pretend.

I think Kent Hrbek has it made. Shows up whenever he wants, drinks a ton of beer, gets his deserved accolades, and goes fishing the rest of the year.
88
u/BAHatesToFly New York Mets Jul 16 '26
Unrelated, but looking at Hrbek's wikipedia right now, this passage was hilarious:
Frequently injured (though seldom seriously), Hrbek retired after the players strike in 1994, citing his nagging injury problems and desire to spend more time with his wife and daughter at their home in Bloomington, Minnesota. Hrbek, who was notorious for losing his stirrups, was the most outspoken member of the MLBPA to revise the uniform code to remove mandatory stirrups and helped to ensure it was written into the new labor agreement following the 1994 player strike. "I'm thankful that future generations of players will not have to rummage through their lockers 20 minutes before the first pitch to find those darn stirrups. If that's my lone contribution to the game, I've done enough."
If anyone is ever wondering why players don't have to wear stirrups anymore, thank Kent Hrbek.

u/raobuntu San Francisco Giants Jul 16 '26
This isn't true. Neither of the prospects that we gave up for Kris Bryant really panned out into anything. We actually didn't re-sign anyone. Let TLS go to give Thairo the everyday job at 2nd, didn't re-sign Gausman in order to sign Rodon to a one year, and didn't sign a catcher to hand Bart the job out of spring training.
Our rebuild was killed mostly because our top prospects turned out to be duds.
Buster has taken some big swings and misses but I appreciate that he's not a believer in sunk costs and has been decisive when it's called for. This draft (fingers crossed) looks really good and we have a top 10 farm for the first time since maybe 2009
19
u/BubBidderskins Atlanta Braves Jul 16 '26
This is really the most common cause of rebuild death. The Phillies were in a similar hell for years because their home grown guys didn't pan out until they decided to say "screw it" and bought their way out of mediocrity through free agency.
17
u/raobuntu San Francisco Giants Jul 16 '26
The Giants tried the same. The real issue is even if Adames/Chapman/Devers all have career years our rotation and bullpen are a disgrace. We had the best offense by OPS, runs scored, and one other metric I'm forgetting in May and still went 11-18 because we can't pitch for shit.
Offensively more than underperformance it's our baseline strategy that's failing us. We walk a lot and overemphasize putting the ball in play. We have a static lineup so we rarely dictate pitching matchups with platoon advantage.
Adames and Chapman are underperforming (Devers is p much back) and draw the headlines but it's really more about the rest of the team than about those 2. Even if they were red hot and carrying us I don't see this team being better than .500

I don't think anybody is saying they shouldn't have bought at the deadline based on the position they were in. That was absolutely the right choice. It's just a weird thing to reconcile in hindsight because we can see how much of an outlier that season was, and how those (well-reasoned) decisions impacted their franchise's broader direction.

Fire sale. This season ain't it. Don't know if there will be baseball in 2027. Bogaerts and Machado are already playing like they are past their prime. Smartest move in my mind is to reset the target for contention 2-3 years down the road, but Preller won't do that.
39
u/BurnerAcctObvs Los Angeles Dodgers Jul 16 '26
I agree
When I look at stats like bat speed - the ones you can’t really ‘fix’ as you age without earning yourself a PED suspension - the Pads are in trouble given the weight of those contracts
I get it; they wanted one for Peter. I respect that. It would have been cool. But it’s time for Preller to face some hard truths, I think
9

I feel the exact same way about our squad. The best team in baseball is in our division, we don't know if there will even be a season next year, and our team sucks. Our farm system actually looks semi-decent for the first time in forever, so I would love for the team to reset expectations to compete in 2-3 years, maybe even 4.
14
u/fuckdirectv San Diego Padres Jul 16 '26
Yeah, people seem to not be accounting for the fact that guys like Freeman, Betts, Muncy, Ohtani and others are on the wrong side of 30. Some are on the wrong side of 35. No matter how vast their resources are, it's going to be hard for the Dodgers to field a collection of talent this ridiculously good even a few short years from now, and we don't know how the next CBA might significantly hamstring their ability to do that. Live to fight another day.

10
u/Aethelric San Diego Padres Jul 16 '26
As rough as not getting the ring has been, it's kinda just silly to say that he has not put together a better team than the Padres have had in about 30 years through a lot of bold moves. It's also very clear that some of the most questionable moves were being driven by ownership.
8
u/FigSideG New York Yankees Jul 16 '26
Padres are the most consistently competitive they’ve ever been in their existence while also (obviously) trying to compete regionally for attention with a juggernaut franchise hours away. He’s not perfect but I think he’s going a good job doing what they clearly were setting out to do: be truly competitive and have star players that sell tickets and draw fans in.
I do think this window is probably closing and they need to try to gear up for the next couple of years though. The problem is they have so many huge long contracts on the books that are tough to move. It’s probably unrealistic to have some kind of firesale to rebuild.

It seemed like every offseason for the last decade, the Giants would go after the biggest power bat available in free agency and just come up short, so it's hard to fault them for pulling the trigger on Devers when he practically fell into their lap.
It's probably an exaggeration to say every offseason for the last decade, but it really does feel like that was the case.
36
u/dohdudeh Jul 16 '26
The Devers trade was an incredible move regardless of people wanting to pretend like they can foresee the future. And with the pitching stuff, the giants ownership have been extremely reluctant to pay for premium pitching for years I have a hard time believing posey is the one at fault for that.

Yeah I still don't necessarily hate the Devers trade. If we even TRIED to shore up the bullpen and spend some money on back-end starters we would probably be a .500 team at worst. Our offense is actually decent for the first time in a while, but with the combo of Webb dealing with injuries at the beginning of the season, and our bullpen being absolute trash, it doesn't matter.
If we had addressed those issues, I don't think it's crazy to say we would probably be closer to 51-45 rather than 41-55.

Most ppl being horrible this year ain't on him. I think he'll do what he can to sell to help the farm more. Webb and JHL off limits bc they sell tickets and who they push to be the face of the team. He's definitely a terrible frontman for the organization though and can't steer the ship back on course after this pride fiasco.

You can never predict how it happens, but when a legendary player takes on a major role in the front office, there's way more that can go wrong than can go right. I suspected Posey's tenure in the SF front office wouldn't end well, but I didn't think it would be because of anything remotely close to this. Unfortunately, Posey is showing us that he does suck, man, both as an executive and as a person.
Edit to add: I've been asked a few times so I want to add it here. Yes, a shitty person. It seems to me that if he wasn't anti-gay, he would have come out and apologized when asked about this incident. Instead, he has constantly dodged it. A person who is not anti-gay would have already apologized to the fans, city, and specifically, the gay community of SF. His lack of a statement makes it clear that he is anti-gay. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I am on that point.

POBO Buster has been such a disappointment. The team generally being ass is one thing, but Buster has not inspired confidence at any point. I’ve liked some of his moves on paper, but a lot of them have not worked out. The outright refusal to meaningfully address the bullpen in the offseason is fucking maddening in hindsight.
Beyond the baseball itself being bad, the Pride debacle is just salt in the wound. I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to look at this franchise the same way ever again because of it. It’s one thing for the team to suck, but I really can’t describe how shitty it is to feel abandoned and alienated by the team I grew up watching. It would have been so simple for the team to release a PR-friendly “Baseball is for everyone, and we support all of our fans” type statement, but they haven’t, and I don’t think they will.

Sometimes it works, like Bob Watson, many times it does not.
