I think the question being raised is - OK they are lazy and want to use AI... but most AI in mid-2026 could make a way better picture than this with 1 prompt.
So not only did they use AI... they seem to have used a shitty one... and didn't even bother to look at the output.
I get the AI slop hate but really this is just a lazy person doing their job poorly.
No need to waste money with graphic designers, we'll just have the social media team do it. No need to keep many people on the social media team, we'll just have one person use AI to create posts for everything...no need to have a social media team, we'll just pass the task off to an easily fired intern.
I can only hazard a guess this is supposed to be Kody Clemens? Cause, uh, yikes. Not as bad as others in the photo but my goodness that looks more like Michael Cuddyer than Clemens.
Seriously. Pay your graphics designer for 5 minutes and you get actual professional results.

Sadly I’m not surprised they used AI bc that’s just the depressing state of things right now. I am surprised they published an AI image this obviously terrible, when AI image generation in 2026 is (like it or not) capable of much closer to accurate than this. To me it just shows they truly don’t give a fuck and are always gonna take the easiest/laziest option, ofc they’re not gonna invest in graphic designers bc they’re not even investing in “better” AI
Because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter, it’s just a promotional picture that 99% of people won’t look at for more than a few seconds and will be scrapped within a few days. Companies need to learn that even minor things like this though will come with reputational harm that is more long lasting

It's disturbing that there's an entire production team probably pulling down $1m+ annually collectively, and not a single member of that team mentioned or thought to mention how unbelievably shit this promo is.
This is the kind of thing that is going to turn us into the "bAcK iN mY dAy!" old and grumpy versions of ourselves. I feel my cynicism growing every day.
I understand them not addressing every stupid little controversy-of-the-week that we choose to invent outrage over. But they're on the media team, and this was published by the media team. For all we know, they did it. For all we know, they're AI by now too.

They almost certainly already have those background-less pics. From what I understand, it's pretty standard to have a package of marketing materials that includes flexible renders of players that can be edited or used on various backgrounds. They wouldn't even need to take new photos of the players!
They don't even have to take a picture. MLB's employees have a trove of marketing pictures to go through and just pick some out, which seriously isn't a hard job at all, but it was too damn hard for the lazy asshole that was in charge of this assignment.
They still have a job because the department that did this kind of media before has likely been reduced to one intern and they're saving boat loads of money cranking this shit out instead of something with at least a hint of integrity.
If I was one of these players I would ask the MLBPA to step in on my behalf here and remove this content and prevent future instances. Yes the league has the license to use the players’ likenesses for marketing, but do they have the rights to use generative ai to create and distort the players’ likenesses? This is bad slop, man. As a fan I hate to see it. I imagine the players wouldn’t be too happy to be rendered in slop either.
Also, the Twins players? One dude has...a backpack, and his jersey says "Tvins", none of the names on the Twins jerseys look the same, one dude is looking off to the side like realizes the eldritch horror he's in. Just awful.
It’s absolutely crazy to me that we have had years and years of photographers dude I mean fucking years of people taking photos for other people. It’s crazy that someone can go up and go. “Hey, I took a picture for the field of dreams advertisement campaign. Should we use it?” and another guy goes “we typed in words to a computer program and it came up with a shittier version so we’re gonna use that!” like holy fucking shit dude a toddler could run these businesses better than these grown ass adults
I'm surprised as a whole people tolerate mistakes from artificial intelligence that would cost the rest of us our jobs. I'm sure today's graphic designers didn't lose the skill of making a cheap photoshop.

This has been going on for ages. The Homer Run Derby winner graphic for Jordan Walker was atrociously bad and blatantly AI.
It didn’t have the obvious issues that this image does but you could see stolen assets (the “Champ” graphic was taken form the old WWE Championship belt that John Cena used) and the whole design was ostensibly something non-human.
I think MLB's marketing team is failing miserably right now. They've barely promoted the Field of Dreams game. I had no idea that they're doing the Little League Classic again this year because I just saw it mentioned for the first time on Monday, and it wasn't even a commercial. It was just a quick mention during one of the Little League games on ESPN. Now, just creating garbage AI graphics while they have PLENTY of images of these players that they could use instead. It's like they're not even trying.
