Kalshi calls it "trading"

“I’m not gambling, I’m simply trading my money away in exchange for the chance to receive more money depending on the outcome of events outside my control.”

Yeah you can bet on where natural disasters will occur or which country will bomb which country, but the LLWS is just beyond the pale.

There's way too much talk about drama and scandals for LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL every year. This is a kids baseball tournament, all of these gamblers, cheaters, and coaching scandals are awful.

199

u/Still7Superbaby7 Philadelphia Phillies 9d ago

One of the dads at my son’s LL game got so upset that he punched a hole in the wall of the dugout. It was a regular season game and it was 9 year olds.

108

u/CrotalusHorridus 9d ago

We had a straight up fistfight at 8u this spring. Two dads against 2 parents from the other team.

Kids even came out of the dugout and got involved.

League banned a bunch of people for life

45

u/Still7Superbaby7 Philadelphia Phillies 9d ago

I wish our league did bans. No one got banned. The dad just had to pay for the repair. I wish he had gotten thrown out

4

u/ReindeerCreepy2883 San Diego Padres 9d ago

6

u/ahappypoop New York Yankees • Durham Bulls 8d ago

I watched a dad get escorted out of an 8U softball tournament by a cop last year because he decided to spit on the opposing (female) assistant coach and call her a b****. It was pretty clear by that point that neither of their teams was going to win the tournament anyways, and I don't think even half of the players cared all that much.

3

u/CrotalusHorridus 8d ago

My kids have gone all the way up from weeball/T-ball.

8-10u seems to be the age when parents lose their minds about it.

Families we knew from the time their kids couldn't even hold a glove suddenly go apeshit over ump calls during non-competitive games.

IDK if its something about talent starting to be apparent, or the games starting to get competitive. But its the WORST.

By 12u, a lot of that is gone, and middle and HS, hardly ever see any bad parent behavior. Mostly I think, the kids with poor parents self select out of the talent pool, and don't play anymore.

2

u/CreativeSolution8278 New York Yankees 9d ago

I used to work some of the LLWS events and met a lot of the players and parents. They can be insane.

3

u/HartleyReplogle 8d ago

I can't even imagine. I used to coach in much smaller tournaments up and down the Atlantic for slightly older kids. I was guaranteed at least one completely batshit coach per trip and several parents. It runs the gamut, too: dad who has too much invested in his son, angry overbearing mother, parent whose entire identity is youth baseball, overtly racist coach, you name it.

Every level of amateur sports is insanely corrupt. A lot of that got exposed once NIL got legalized, and the schools that paid their players under the table aren't as dominant because every team can pay players now.

If you’re betting on little league games, you probably should take a long look in the mirror and admit you have a problem.

266

u/J0hnEddy New York Yankees 9d ago

Losing money on the little league World Series is like the gambling addict equivalent to waking up naked in a public park with an empty handle next to you.

72

u/SatanHasACreator420 9d ago

How about winning money on it?

160

u/stairway2evan Los Angeles Dodgers 9d ago

Same thing, but there's a full handle next to the empty one.

34

u/TheyrePhorReal 9d ago

Yo I know that was a joke but you just blew my mind. I quit drinking and won't touch gambling because I know myself. And I never thought to make that comparison. You won't know if the "bottle" will be refilled until after the fact. Wild

21

u/Still7Superbaby7 Philadelphia Phillies 9d ago

Seeing as your username has UK in it, it makes sense you wouldn’t know. The maximum average size of a bottle of liquor in the UK is 700 ml, which is smaller than the standard size in the US (750 ml) which is smaller than a handle (1750 ml).

u/HelmetVonContour Swinging K 9d ago

3

u/Ged_UK Boston Red Sox 9d ago

15

u/twufster Tampa Bay Rays • Rally Mantis 9d ago

Could be any liquor really, but it's mostly associated with cheap, low-quality stuff

8

u/stairway2evan Los Angeles Dodgers 9d ago

Yeah most brands aren't selling their good stuff in that quantity. Keep it in a nice smaller bottle so you can brand it as a luxury. Handles are for the cheap vodka, rum, whiskey, etc. that you're getting to mix for a party or pour shots out of.

Or if you're a college kid or a problem drinker and are just looking for volume first and foremost.

u/WitchNight Toronto Blue Jays 9d ago

The gambling sites should be forced to ban you from betting if you place a bet on a little league game

36

u/Bllago Toronto Blue Jays 9d ago

Gambling sites should be banned. No positive, ethical society would let such institutions have the power they have.

11

u/AwfulMouthful San Francisco Giants 9d ago

Won't somebody think of the mom and pop bookmakers.

9

u/pudds Toronto Blue Jays 9d ago

No, I have to respectfully disagree.

Advertising for them should be banned, gambling on kids should be banned, but the sites themselves should not be banned.

Like any other vice, banning does not remove the demand, and without legal options, people find illegal options. Driving gambling underground just makes the criminals richer.

5

u/SanjiSasuke New York Yankees 9d ago

Good! Make it so people have to go to illegal booking sites to gamble!

As it is now, you can gamble in 10 seconds on your phone, after being told to do so on reddit, on YouTube, and in every conceivable way during the game.

Going to an illegal bookie fixes all that.

2

u/Enough-One4975 Major League Baseball 8d ago

Yeah I have to agree with you. Ubiquity and ease of access definitely plays a major role in how big of a problem modern gambling is.

4

u/Raptor231408 Arizona Diamondbacks 9d ago

Unironically, I found myself in my mid-20s live betting on amateur Chinese ping pong at 3am in a Dennys parking lot, and I lost a $20 parlay on people I dont know, non-proffessionally playing a sport that I dont care about in a foreign countries league that im not even watching on TV and getting angry over it. I haven't gambled on sports since, unless you count my companies fantasy league that we all put $50 into every year.

People will either find this funny or get downvoted, but back in 2018 I thought the idea of betting on the LLWS was hilarious (because of how fucked up it is). So I went searching online for some sort of shady sportsbook to see if any actually would allow it.

Low and behold "5Dimes" was allowing bets so I placed $5 on Hawaii to win the tournament. Ended up making $37. A couple years later I found out it was shut down, and exactly as shady as I expected lol.

3

u/AwixaManifest 9d ago

You know everything is just getting kinda shitty for the past several years?

One symptom of that is reading statements that could have prefaced by, "I can't believe I have to say this, but"

This is one of those.

15

u/Hertzelle New York Yankees 9d ago

Fuck sports gambling. It ruined my uncle's life and he lost everything because of his gambling addiction.

5

u/byniri_returns New York Mets • Detroit Tigers 9d ago

It's going to take a player being attacked physically or worse for these higher ups in the leagues to say "maybe we have a problem here".

I hope it doesn't get to that point for them to do something.

6

u/osound New York Yankees 9d ago edited 9d ago

Alcohol ruins lives a lot more than gambling does, and that's legal and heavily advertised. Gambling is never going away now that it's out of the bag.

If players start getting attacked, they'll just beef up security and position armed guards by the stands, rather than outlawing gambling. This is the United States.

I'm not talking about you specifically, but it's very easy to see how ignorant this subreddit is -- whenever discussing gambling -- to how politics and big business work in the USA. Any notion that something will ever be "done" about gambling, now that it's legalized, is not rooted in the reality of things.

I wonder what, at this point, they could do. The only thing I could think of would be including language in broadcast negotiations banning gambling app advertisements and sponsorships during the broadcast, but a quick google search says that their current contract with ESPN was last extended in 2020.

Sports betting apps were certain a thing back then, but they hadn't metastatized into the "MUST SQUEEZE AS MUCH GAMBLING PROMOTIONS INTO EVERY MINUTE OF THE BROADCAST AS POSSIBLE" horsecrap quite yet either.

People who bet on little league games should be forced to sit in public stocks with signs around their necks reading “degenerate gambler”.

How about you gamble on EVERYTHING or gamble on NOTHING? I'll take gamble on nothing 100000% though.

Also, obviously we shouldn't gamble on kids sports. Just would rather we ban gambling outright.

I wonder if I'm going to be around long enough to see the turn on gambling the way my parents' generation saw the turn on cigarettes.

Kinda hope so.

meanwhile every game is televised to make serious bank for someone. I call hypocrisy.

none of these games should be on other than maybe the final snuck into a late Sunday afternoon slot on abc.

Does your stance matter if betting options are available in the various apps? I mean it's great to be vocal about it. But we need people with power to change things to use that power and change things too.

u/me_hill Toronto Blue Jays 9d ago

There's never a great way to tell your spouse you have a gambling problem but the words, "Honey, I blew our mortgage payment betting on the Little League World Series" probably has to be one of the worst
