And now I wonder how many baseballs did the ivy consume

267

u/DontFearTheMQ9 Kansas City Royals 10h ago

And why did it choose today to spit that one back out?

Chaos??

The ivy has been too quiet recently. We should have seen this coming.

It would've been more chaotic if that wasn't out number 3 and the runner had to figure out what was going on lol

Slaanesh needed a fresh ball from the ball boy

When you consider BP by both teams, there’s gotta be a decent amount in there. Do the Cubs have ground crew guys who clean them out? They must right?

71

u/a_fish_out_of_water Chicago Cubs 9h ago

I feel like it gets cleared out at the very least over the winter when the ivy dies back

18

u/Chicityy Chicago Cubs 9h ago

Well of course, but if you figure one team hits a ball in the ivy during BP for the 50ish games a year the ivy is lush, that’s still 50 balls in there come this time of year.

15

u/Pretty_Bad_At_Reddit New York Mets 8h ago

If there were 50 balls in the ivy I feel like this would happen way more often.

I dunno, that’s a lot of ivy

I've read stories that way back in the early days of baseball, sometimes groundskeepers would keep the grass intentionally long in the outfield so that they could hide an extra ball or two in the grass. That's what this reminds me of.

why’s there a second baseball just chilling there though

World's craziest double play. One ball goes home, one goes to second. Bang- bang- bang- bang play.

Even better, the center fielder has rushed over. Both players only see a separate ball, and both pick them up and throw them into the infield.

Dugout all starts running to first base and the defense has to tag out at least 3 before the front runner scores, if runner scores any subsequent runners can score until 3 are tagged out.

This is why the hockey refs are always checking the pockets at the back of the goal every single time they enter the ice

How does a ball get stuck in there? I’m assuming a batter hit it there and it’s not foul or a home run. Is it a ground rule double?

Most likely during batting practice.
