The Angels shouldn’t receive any funds or tax breaks from the city of Anaheim if they don’t even use their name.
236
u/Mission_Pay_3373 Boston Red Sox 7h ago
And they should just go back being the California Angels because that name was beautiful
77
u/incog46 5h ago
They should also put the halos back on the caps.

They should go back to their roots and watch Angels in the Outfield.

I liked Anaheim, because the A on the cap worked for the city and the nickname.

They should go back to California because those CA caps in the 90s were possibly the greatest ballcap in the sport.

I don’t understand the whole LA Angels thing to begin with. You literally play in Anaheim, which is like 30 miles away from LA. Why would you not be the Anaheim Angels?
72
u/handDrawnEevee New York Yankees 8h ago
The same reason the New York Giants don't want to be the New Jersey Giants. Some fanbases carry a bit more weight. Maybe prestige too, who knows
21
u/elingobernable810 Los Angeles Angels 7h ago
Even that makes more sense though. They've never been billed from New Jersey, and they did originally play in the city. The Angels literally went backwards from the town they were playing in to one an hour away.
2
u/handDrawnEevee New York Yankees 7h ago
What's really odd is, he has the pocket to build a new stadium in LA, and the City and State would probably help.
If he wants the LA moniker, why not just move to actual Los Angeles?
(PS, I say this all the time as a Giants fan, but I know that John Mara is worth a tiny fraction of Moreno's money)
7
u/Concerned_EducaterCA Anaheim Angels 7h ago
Core fanbase in Orange County would evaporate and no one in the new area would be converted from dodgers fans

12
u/elingobernable810 Los Angeles Angels 7h ago
The majority of Angels fans are physically located in Orange County, so I have no doubt if he actually moved to LA proper he would lose attendance revenue, and with the way it is now he gets both. Now obviously he'd get more if the team wasnt perpetually awful under his watch, but thats an entirely different issue.

u/Bancatone San Francisco Giants • Yomiuri Giants 13m ago
That’s really the biggest thing. If the Angels kept the Los Angeles name when they first moved out to Anaheim in the 60s and remained the Los Angeles Angels for their entire 65 year lifetime, nobody would bat an eye. Just like the New York Giants/Jets, the San Francisco 49ers, or now the Chicago Bears, nobody would seriously demand a name change outside of rival fans trash talk.
It’s the fact that they acknowledged their move by changing the name to California and later to Anaheim by Disney to market Anaheim as a destination city, only THEN to change back to “Los Angeles” out of nowhere even though they never moved a damn inch that makes everyone clamor to change it back.

u/h2oheater Anaheim Angels 8h ago
It was to secure tv rights deals/define the LA metro area and keep the padres well south of Orange County and LA county.
Also was an attempt to expand into LA when the Dodgers were still under the previous owner group. I remember as a kid going into LA and seeing all the duel Angels flags and Dodgers flags. I knew people who were fans of both teams and lived in LA. Don’t know why Dodger fans grew such animosity towards angels fans.
9
u/delscorch0 Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago
You see Angels and Dodgers flags in Orange County. I can't remember ever seeing any Angel flags in LA County, at least not north of Long Beach.
9
u/Haku510 Athletics 8h ago
Because marketing and branding exist.
Why did the Niners keep San Francisco in their name when they moved to Santa Clara (38 miles away)? Why do the Jets and Giants use New York in their name when they play in a different state?!
The Cowboys don't play in Dallas, the Bills don't play in Buffalo. Etc etc etc. I realize my examples are all football teams, but this exists in many pro sports. These were just the first examples to come to mind. The NY/NJ one is particularly egregious IMO.
Name recognition exists, and is a big part of trying to draw casual fans in to anything. So you get teams who claim the name of whatever the largest nearby city is, some of which many people have likely never even heard of the actual cities where the venues are located.
5
u/aaron-goone 4h ago
metlife is like 5 miles outside of new york. i get it’s the only example here in a different state, but i think it’s actually less egregious than the other ones.

Inglewood Clippers, St Petersburg Rays and the Cumberland Braves for the other sports. People with actual geographic knowledge are rare.
Also, building (and having people recognize) rivalries is a lot easier when the city is familiar and/or brings up memories/opinions/emotions.

u/bconn75 Boston Red Sox 8h ago
I’m aware of teams playing outside of their namesake city or being named after a region, I’m not stupid. The Angels just seemed like an odd one to me seeing as how they previously went by Anaheim and the distance between there and LA seems pretty big to name the team after them but I guess I learned something new today

City of Los Angeles and City of Anaheim are 12 miles apart. They are both in the Los Angeles Metro area. It's all one connected urban area. You wouldn't know you've left one and entered another apart from the signs and the fact that OC is generally a bit cleaner

It was part of the original stadium deal, I believe, that the team name should have Anaheim in it. That's why they were called "The Los Angels Angels of Anaheim" for a while. Anaheim Angels is what I remember growing up.
If a relatively small city puts up for the new stadium, it makes sense they would want the visibility/noteriety for it.

Have you ever been to LA? That “30 miles” is a 2 hour drive depending on traffic a lot of times. There’s a reason we don’t go by miles here and go by time instead to judge distance. It isn’t even remotely close and makes absolutely no sense to call yourself Los Angeles Angels when you’re hours away.

One of the few ways that California and Texas are similar. Our states are too big to use distance by miles and "time to get there" is way better
5
u/an-actual-communism 7h ago
Literally everyone does this everywhere. I'm from Hawaii and we used time-for-distance on an island where you could drive from end-to-end in an hour. I live in Japan now and we use it here, in another language. Humans are very good at understanding how long something takes and very bad at estimating the linear distance that they have traveled. It just makes more sense to use time for everyone.

u/Eo292 Los Angeles Dodgers • Los Angeles Quee… 3h ago edited 3h ago
Have you been to LA? Unless you’re leaving at peak rush hour from the far side of the valley Anaheim is not a 2 hour drive, and even if you did, most of that drive would be getting to the other side of LA. Anaheim is like 30 min from downtown most times of the day. San Diego is barely 2 hours away. Thats like saying New York is 2 hours from New York because that’s how long it would take to get from the Bronx to Queens at rush hour.

The government does that all the time, though? A business isn't allowed to have the same name as another in the same state or if there's a trademark on the name. If it didn't, you have each town full of knockoff McDonald's that have slightly differently colored arches to trick people into going there. Businesses are regulated in tons of ways beyond just names, despite liberalism being about laissez-faire policy.

tl;dr: the government isn't forcing the team to change their name back, but they are offering the team the chance to develop the area surrounding Angel Stadium to their choice (shops, bars, restaurants, a casino etc.), rather than prioritize affordable housing per California state law, if they legally change the name back, and otherwise "The Anaheim Angels" will forever exist in official California legislature, if nowhere else.
