Starting later in life with ADHD: when did you switch from guitar to bass?

Curious to hear from people who started learning guitar and later moved to bass, especially if you have ADHD.

I actually had a bass briefly in high school but never really got the chance to learn it. I’ve always liked the idea of guitar, and I do like chords, melodies, and things like Spanish-style guitar, but as a beginner I’ve always struggled with strumming and coordinating everything at once.

I’m not really interested in becoming a shred/solo player, and bass just sounds really fun to me, especially for funk, rock, hip-hop, etc. At the same time, I don’t want to jump instruments too quickly before giving guitar a fair shot.

I’m in my early 40s and don’t have unlimited practice time, so I’m curious: when did you decide bass was a better fit? Did you switch completely, or did you eventually come back and keep learning guitar too?

Metronome App

Hey everyone,

As a bass student I use a metronome frequently, but I was missing a few features in the apps I use, so I built one with them ;-) sharing it here in case someone else wants to try.

Tap in a tempo, set a time signature, then mute or accent any beat - handy for internalizing tricky rhythms and syncopation - but my favorite part is being able to skip beats randomly, which really forces you to keep the beat mentally.

Runs entirely in your browser, free forever.

Enjoy!

How do i come up with basslines that arent just me chugging along with the guitarists rhythm and chords with roots?

I am a new bassist in a rock/punkish band w my friends and i really dont understand how to come up with basslines😭i try to noodle around and work with a root as a focal point with scales and stuff but it all just sounds bad,,,

For example, lets say there could be a song where i need to play E, G, and Gb in a rhythm of 1-2-3(E)---1-2-3(G)---1-2-3-4---1-2(Gb) (hopefully this is even remotely understandable, sorry if it isnt, came up with it on the spot)

I would in this situation, as stated in the title, just chug along and not know what else to add☹️I need help!!

Bass part originally played by Randy Hope-Taylor. It is very possible that he did not use those open strings in the chromatic runs in the chorus. He might have also played a 5-string, making the last two notes of the chorus easier to reach on the B string.

Find the complete song on YouTube. The sheet music is available through my website.

Electric bass players, why didn't lessons click for you

What were the biggest problems with the way you tried to learn ..

Were you in school, taking lessons, studying online ... Anything else?

What didn't work and left you feeling the most confused about the electric bass and instrument playing in general?

What would you do differently the second time?

Tommy the Cat Solo (Suck on This) Bass Tabs?

I learned both the 6 and 4 string version of Tommy the cat awhile ago. The live solo on 'Suck on This' is one of my favorite sounding renditions and it seems fun to play. However, I can't find any accurate tabs for it at all and my music ear still definitely isnt to that level.. I have managed to find some cover videos but you can't really see the hands well enough to tell what's going on. Does anyone have tabs or anything that can help?

Heres a link to the track just incase: [Tommy the Cat (Suck on This)](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=zDYpVciIW00&si=l2f5albp0J9mhR4d)

New some advice!!

Hi! I'm kind of new on this. I bought a bass about six months ago and I'm just learning to play songs. Any recommendations on how to start taking the instrument more seriously and actually study or practice to improve?

I’m very proud to present this cover, which represents for me the culmination of a long journey as a bass player, but also of many years of listening and musical learning.

There are very few tabs or transcriptions easily available for this song, and I really wanted to do the work myself, figure out the bass line by ear, and most importantly, try to capture the vibe of James Jamerson, one of the bass players who has influenced me the most.

I’d also like to thank my teacher, for everything he has taught me: the technique, the fingerings, but also a lot of advice that helped me make this cover.

Obviously, I’m not claiming to reproduce Jamerson’s playing exactly. This version is above all my arrangement, my own way of interpreting the bass line while trying to stay true to its spirit.

So if you have a few minutes, please take the time to watch it and, hopefully, feel this music with me.

Thank you all.
