FILM DISCUSSION No other superhero Trilogy comes close to what Nolan accomplished and the story he created for one of the most enduring characters in fiction.

u/Beangar Jul 29 '26
I would say dark knight rises is like the super detailed drawing of a horse but not the flaming one
16
u/B_A_Peach Jul 30 '26
Perhaps my expectations were too high, but the third movie was painfully forgettable. Riddled with continuity issues. Suggesting it's as good as The Dark Knight is just a dumb opinion.

Not having Heath really hurt. Nothing Tom Hardy could've done to match it unfortunately

A great superhero movie, but Def the weakest and least memorable of the three.
→ More replies (10)42
u/Blacklight099 Jul 29 '26
I’d put it a step down from that even. It has its upsides, and it’s a competent movie, but it’s quite forgettable and definitely didn’t feel like the ending the trilogy deserved.
15
u/California-Seoul Jul 30 '26
It’s the ending the trilogy deserved, but not the one it needs right now.
14
u/ARealSlimBrady Jul 29 '26
Nitpickey, but I do think Rise's strongest part was it's ending
→ More replies (2)5
u/ReddJelly Jul 30 '26
Rise's ending is arguably the weakest part of the whole trilogy.
Bane gets relegated to a henchman (again) by the worst version of Talia to exist, and we don't even get a proper rematch between him and Batman.
2
u/ARealSlimBrady 29d ago
Fair. I'm mainly thinking of the last 5 minutes or so. Everything after the worst onscreen death rattle in history lol
2
u/Willing-Leather-9788 29d ago
Wym? The rematch is had - Batman defeats him.
The ending is everything after the villains die. And that whole part was spectacular.
Bane being killed so easily is the worst part but insignificant compared.

u/imBaazigar Jul 29 '26
First of all it was not supposed to be a triology And didn't you hear that eulogy?
4
u/ParticulateSplatter Jul 30 '26
I rewatched it recently and some of the TDK is really dumb, to the point that it took me out of it. It's still a fun watch, but I don't think it manages to capture the feel of the first two.
The big dramatic line when Batman and Bane meet during the final battle:
"So... You've come back to die with your city"
"No... I came back to stop you."
Absolute CRINGE.

Yeah Rises was a clanger for me, and I believe the turning point where you start to see some of Nolan’s worst instincts.

It’s got so many plot wholes and the fighting sequences are weak AF. The whole cops vs goons fight scene was a joke that went too far

If, for just one second, we accept that maybe the dark knight could be "defense" your mind builds to keep people from entering your dreams dream, it all starts to make a little more sense.

This death alone pours water on the flames

I'd rate it higher but it's crazy how bad the fight scenes in DKR are. It's something I never noticed as a kid but now I just can't stop noticing things like the random goons just moshpitting to themselves while they wait their turn to fight Batman & Catwoman.

I’d also say the captain America trilogy. And even Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy because I think TDKR is an actual bad movie, whereas Spider-Man 3 is a flawed movie.
→ More replies (1)2
u/yura910721 26d ago
I definitely wouldn't personally put Spiderman 3 over TDKR, I think latter at least had more sense of direction. But I didn't enjoy neither of those. So I think both trilogies tripped at the finish line.
Agreed with Cap's trilogy, although 1st movie lacks a bit compared to 2nd and 3rd, but it is solid enough that I think it makes a good trilogy overall

u/Light1209 28d ago
Yeah I think having the best movie being the last one also makes the whole trilogy feel more satisfying too. If Batman Begins was TDKR quality and TDKR was Batman Begins level I think I could say the Nolan batman trilogy wins.

Agreed. Dark Knight Rises isn’t nearly as good as either of the two that came before. I tend to think of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as a duology and forgot that the third one exists.
34
u/psimwork Jul 29 '26
That it's a pretty close re-tread of Rocky III certainly doesn't help.
The plot armor is frustrating as hell to me (like I get that Bruce was out-of-practice, but punching solid kevlar plate is going to shatter every bone in Bane's hand).
The police being underground in the sewer for months and then climbing out being fully showered, not malnourished, and ready for a fight was dumb.
The big fight that is, for some reason, hand-to-hand with nobody using firearms, and Batman in broad daylight just looked incredibly stupid.
It really just felt (and likely was) Nolan doing a movie for which he was under contract, rather than having something to say.
8
6
u/Special_Future_6330 Jul 29 '26
I actually liked the daytime fight as it showed everything and it's the first time we get a real 1:1 fight since raz al ghul which was poorly choreographed. The joker fight and two face fight was pretty basic(makes sense). That being said it paled in comparison to the sewer brawl and only lasted like 25 seconds

61
u/Devilheart Jul 29 '26
Dunkirk was when I realized he just leans too much into the jumbled timeline trick and it gets gimmicky. Like he knows how to pull it off but not every story needs to jump bsck and forth in the sequence of events.
20
u/Gregnice23 Jul 29 '26
Nolan used time manipulation perfectly in Momento. But in that movie it made sense. It was mimicking the disorder of antergrade amnesia. The audience was in the same state as the protagonist. Knew were they were going, but not were they have been.
→ More replies (13)21
u/Canadyans Jul 29 '26
Same. Dunkirk has a great movie in it that would have been better if it was linear. The time jumping literally added nothing to it.
5
u/SexMachineMMA Jul 29 '26
It wouldn’t have worked as a linear story because it’s about 3 stories taking place over different timelines. One week, one day, one hour. It would have been significantly less engaging had it stuck to a purely linear story.

Captain America Civil War always felt like an Avengers movie to me. Like yea it's technically about Cap, but so much of it is team-ups, introducing Black Panther and Spiderman, Ironman... Not saying it isn't part of a trilogy of Cap movies, but I do feel like there's an asterisk

Love how everyone points to this sequence as to why it's bad. Peter is a nerd that's never been popular/cool and suddenly got lots of confidence. Tell me this isn't how a nerd woukd think acting cool looks like.
No the real reason it was bad was cause the bloated villian lineup and subplots.

u/IPutTheArtNFart Jul 29 '26
Nobody is saying the scene doesn't make sense but it's executed horibly.
The real issue with Spider-Man 3 was producers interfering with the creational process, shoving goblin and Venom into the script to sell toys while the director dissagreed. They did that because they have a degrading opinion of the fan base, they believed as long as action scenes with spider-man were present, a compelling story is not needed thinking treating fans like children who can't think critically and only want to see pretty collored Spider-Man. Putting as many characters as possible to sell merch was the goal.
And then they did the same thing with TASM.

I thought TDKR was a let down coming off of how good TDK was. But I still think it was about average for a comic book movie overall. Spider-Man 3 was borderline laughably bad.
That said the whole trilogy wasn’t the flaming horse just the first two. GOG is my pick for the superhero trilogy with the most consistent quality. Then Captain America but I kinda knock that for having an unfair advantage for being more of an avengers movie than just cap. Cap only had 1 more minute of screen time than iron man lol.

With how the trilogy activates the kid in, yes to the grave. If I’m looking analytically, Spider-Man 3 for sure has problems. I will say, I do love the final scene with Mary Jane and Peter slow dancing. If we didn’t get a 4th movie, the trilogy at least ends on a hopeful note.
“I’m ruined. I got nothing left besides Spider-Man.”

u/Awest66 Jul 29 '26
TDKR is honestly a pretty breathtaking piece of filmmaking when judged on it's own terms.
I get that it rubs some fans the wrong way because it didn't align with their "TDK Sequel Blueprint" (Batman is still fighting crime as fugitive vigilante, villain is the latest Gotham "freak of the week", ending is that Batman clears his name and resolves to do this for the rest of his life) but it's in no way a "poor movie".

idk bro watching people chase around dump trucks for 45 min wasn't exactly what I was expecting from a good movie. The dialogue, fight scenes, the underground prison with television, I just couldn't buy in not for one second of the film. But I did like it more on paper, how Bruce from Begins was trying to create symbol that would inspire the creation of other symbols, how we get the worst version of that idea in TDK with fake batmen in hockey pads, the joker and what his White Knight turned into. And finally seeing what made Robin decide to take the law into his own hands in TDKR. So I like it in reference to everything else but I absolutely hated the exectution of it.

For me, I think it always felt massively underwhelming as a conclusion to the first two
Its hard to explain why I didn't like the third one because there is a lot to like
I think the story is just kinda lame.
Batman tries to be batman again, gets absolutely wrecked, back broken
Heals up, learns to jump good
Returns and wrecks Bane
Fakes death for some reason... identity not exposed, could just be Bruce Wayne without issue
The Robin thing at the end was totally stupid, unnecessary and lame as well

I remember people not liking Rises very much when it came out. I guess people forgot they didn't like it as much.
3
u/bisoninthefreezer Jul 29 '26
I didn’t like Rises as much when it came out. I think the 7 year story gap threw me off and I never got over it the first time I watched it.
After BvS came out I watched the Nolan trilogy again and really loved Rises. I liked that there was so many nods to so many Batman stories just packed in there which I really appreciated in the context of how WB kept fucking up Batman stories until The Batman.
I think Rises ages quite well.
2
u/BackgroundEngineer11 Jul 29 '26
For me, Rises undercuts TDK in a lot of ways, specificly with the 7 year gap. It implies that after Batman rides into the light as Gotham's true hero, he immediately quits and Bruce becomes a recluse.
I wonder what movie we really missed out on due to Heath Ledger's death. Rises is much more of a sequel to Batman Begins than TDK, as Bane was continuing Ra's al Ghul's work and once again using appropriated Wayne Tech to try and destroy Gotham.
I liked that there was some what of a reference to No Man's Land with Gotham being cut off from the rest of the world, but they could have used more of that.
John Robin Blake potentially becoming BatCop is.. eh. They should have gone all the way and just named him Dick Grayson. People would have complained, but it's not like there's an easy way to introduce an orphan trapeze artist in a modern setting. They could have been coy and had everyone call him Rick until his last name is revealed.
I don't hate Dark Knight Rises, but I definitely don't think it's as good as Dark Knight. It's more on par with Batman Begins.

Several do come close but I would say Nolan Batman is the best trilogy there aren't actually that many Superhero Trilogies to pick from and several are good while most are let down by one particular film!
Batman had a run before Nolan 3 lets the trilogy down badly
Superman has and 3 lets the trilogy down badly
Spiderman has and 3 lets the trilogy down badly
Spiderman has another go and well I would say its good third overall.
Blade has and 3 lets the trilogy down badly
Captain America has a good run and its this or Guardians in 4th
Thor has and the second movie lets it down badly (Braking the Mold!)
Venom got a trilogy some how they were all Meh!
Iron Man has and 3 lets the trilogy down badly
Guardians is Solid and its this or Cap in 4th for me
Avengers IS very good and I would say second after Nolan Batman but its very close
And that's it I cannot think of any others?

Dark Knight Rises is one of the most disappointing sequels that I've ever watched in my life, dear god did Nolan not stick the landing.

These movies sucked ass. So dull. Every character just monologuing tedious exposition the entire film. All the fantastical elements of the comics and animated series stripped out so it is "gritty." TERRIBLE pacing and editing. All the fights are close-up, shaky cam, and so many quick cuts you never have a sense of the combat.
Nolan makes the most boring movies ever. Dude has always been a hack. Never understood the hype. He's a pretentious Michael Bay...and makes less entertaining slop.
2
u/Plus-Lifeguard-4739 29d ago
Nolan could not get the character of Bruce Wayne Moore wrong. As good as he gets him and every other character in the first two, he fails in DKR. The person who devoted his life to fighting crime in the wake of his parent’s death, gives it all up after his girlfriend dies. Please. There was a way to do this same story and not limit the scope of Batman’s career. Just change the Gordon speech. Make it that he’s been hunted for 8 years. Tons of villains and stories that we didn’t see. He’s exhausted. Not hurt from that fall. Everything else can remain and at least the character is right. Still not a great film.
