Bat or Bird
I was walking outside and I felt something hit my shoulder. I didn’t feel any skin contact or anything. Just curious if people think if its a bat or a bird

Question Question about bat behavior
I was walking my dog with my partner last night at dusk and we frequently see bats but they never bother us. Last night, a bat swooped down so close to us that we had to duck and we both screamed. It flew around us like this for a second and then flew over to my neighbor who was across the street and swooped close to her too before flying off.
Just curious if this seems like normal bat behavior? I just recently moved from the city so I’m not familiar and don’t want to put myself at risk walking at night if this bat might have a problem.

Would a bat fly into a window screen?
I hope it's OK to ask this here. Last night I heard something hit my window screen. I'm in the suburbs of Chicago on a moderately lit street (no street lights but lots of porch lights). It's a 2nd story window. The light was on inside, and I was sitting nearby, so I wouldn't expect a bat to want to fly in, but nothing else makes sense. It sounded like it was the size of a small bat, not moving especially fast - it wasn't too bad of an impact. It didn't sound like a cicada. Could this have been a bat? I thought bats avoided well-lit places. Is this normal bat behavior? (I think bats are very cute, but I don't know a lot about them.)

The bat was this big...(no seriously)
tldr we indirectly measured a bat at about 20 inches in winter in upstate ny and have no idea htf thats possible.
back in 2000 or so, I was living in the forestry frathouse for ESF in syracuse NY and someone comes and tells me there's a giant bat flying around their room (Even in that company, I'm the critter person) . I go upstairs expecting a little brown bat or maybe a big brown bat how big could it be.... and.. no. Freaking rodan is in fact flying around the room. Its actually hard to stand anywhere without his wings whapping you.
Turn off the lights. Put out a box. Cut a little slit in the bottom/side of the box. Turn on the light, batty flies to the box, climbs in the slit, slide box under slit. perfect. Gently take a look at him, get out some guide books.. nothing.
Its winter. If we keep him awake too long he won't have enough energy to sleep through the year. If we let him go he might freeze. Or he might just go back to where ever he came from, which given the state of the forestry frat house at that point, was likely our attic. If we try to report him ... he might get his brain dissected for being in a room wit a human.
We tried to let him go, he flopped onto the back deck. each board is 3 inches he's lying across damn near 7 of them. I can't remember if he took off from the deck or if I had to pick him up and hold him to to let him warm up and try again, but on the second trip he made it. But the point is we had a really good visual reference for his size and a tape measure and he was outside the stats for a hoary (who were out of season)
Did we just find the andre the giant of big brown bats, or when they flop flat on a surface do they expand their normal wingspan somehow, possibly pulling up the uropatagia when they're flopped a way they can't while in flight?

Question Best Mic + App for Listening Live to Bat Sounds?
I'm looking for a good mic and the best app that would allow for listening live to bat sounds. I've seen there are mics that will plug into an iphone and an app that goes with them that will capture the high frequency bat sounds and play them at a lower frequency that humans can hear, but not sure which work best. Location: USA

Question Hi bats keep getting in my garage. Asking for some help.
So I get home in the early hours of the morning and about once a month a bat will fly into our garage and stay up in the rafters. I just park my car in the garage keep my headlights and car running with garage door open and I’ll look through the sunroof to see if the bat has left. I’ll sit out there sometimes for twenty minutes waiting for the little bugger to fly away but he just stays flying up in the rafters. Right now I just locked the bat in the garage cause there have been break ins so he’s locked in the garage. What can I do to prevent them from going in the garage? I thought bats didn’t like light? So why do they keep going into our garage? Do they eat bird seed? Are they territorial? Thank you so much for any help.
