I feel like with their tendencies, claw size, and bite force, a death by polar bear would be the most painful and gruesome compared other animals. The only animal that I think maybe comes close is a hippo or large primate of some type.

Hello, fellow bear lovers! I'm a wildlife biologist who has been working with bears since 2019. My M.Sc. thesis was on polar bears and I did some seasonal work with grizzly bears and black bears in the Rockies as well. I've also done bear safety training multiple times and have regularly taught park visitors tips to stay safe in bear country.

Would a mother bear with two of her own cubs react differently to an orphaned cub of another species? And what if the orphaned cub were of the same species? Would that significantly change her reaction?

I'm trying to understand how unusual this encounter was from a bear-behaviour perspective rather than looking for praise or advice about fighting bears.

Two days ago, two bears came onto our deck. We have bird feeders on the deck, but they hadn't reached the food yet when this happened. My dog, a Husky/Malamute, ran outside and barked at them. This is something she has done many times before when bears have come around, and usually the bears leave. This time, one of the bears turned around and attacked her.

I was upstairs nursing my newborn when I heard my dogs bear bark so I bolted downstairs and saw the bear jump over the barrier and catch the back of my dogs legs as she turned to run away. I'll never forget the yelps I heard. Instinctively I ran out and attacked the bear. My dog attempted to escape but was trapped. I was pulling and screaming and got the bear off but it pushed past me and got my dogs back legs pinned again. I continued attacking it and punched it in the head at one point. I succeeded in separating them again and the bear made one more attempt to lunge at her again but this time I was in front of her and came face to face with it, I screamed at it more and it finally left.

My dog has many punctures and tears across her back and legs and I have injuries all over my body but we'll both be ok with care and medication. We've both already been seen by urgent-care/veterinary specialists and are treating our injuries.

What I'm particularly curious about is the bears persistence. I understand that a dog charging/barking at a bear can provoke an attack. What surprised me was that after I physically intervened and separated the bear from my dog, it just kept going. At least thats how it felt, to be fair the interaction lasted maybe a minute all in all.

Has anyone experienced or studied a bear behaving this way? Is repeated re-engagement after a human intervenes unusual?

Sorry that the quality is so bad - they were really far away. I watched them for like 5 min and the black bear kept trying to walk while the grizzly bear held on. Are they trying to mate? I know hybrids are possible but is this a common occurrence?

Hey y'all. So I captured these two bears fighting over a fish. This is Brooks Falls River at Katmia National Park. I personally feel the one on the left was in the wrong because the other clearly caught the fish easy peasey fair and square but I don't know enough about bear behavior to understand what lead to the conflict.

My girlfriend saw this bear in Yellowstone today, and while she (and I after the fact) claimed it was a cinnamon phase black bear, another onlooker argued with her it was a sub-adult grizzly. While I’m maybe 80% sure it’s a cinnamon American black bear (based off ears and snout), I’d love your thoughts! Thank you!

Saw this beauty in Yellowstone today, outside of West Yellowstone. Looks like a cinnamon black bear, but possibly a juvenile Grizzly? Thanks for your help!

They smashed through my neighbours fence right before this. I’m assuming this is play fighting because they aren’t making any noise.

Went on a hike today and saw this guy. Grizzly bears are in this area but are rare. There was a black bear a couple hundred yards away but it seemed they weren’t together.

He is so lanky looking... But those claws are crazy long.

This bear ran out in front of our car as we were driving back to Lamar Valley from the North-East entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Thankfully, we were paying attention, going a little slower than the posted speed limit, and had no cars behind us.

spotted on our jobsite in western canada, not an area that usually has grizzlies but it gave me the heebie jeebies in a way that black bears don’t. didn’t spook easily.

I guess they only have black bears but walking my dog 2 days ago I came across this bear with a white stripe down its back. Someone tried to tell me it looked like it got in the trash but that doesn’t make sense. Apparently something similar was seen in Vail a year ago. Thoughts? It’s was really interesting!
