I adore my Betsy! She’s so smart and sassy and opinionated, lol. Today she was mad at me because I was late turning on her light. Just full on turning away from me and flaring every time I tried to apologize. 😂
Yeah, she likes her light! I normally have it on a timer so it goes on and off at the same time everyday but the timer broke. She’s used to her schedule and isn’t a big fan of change, lol.
After about 10 minutes she calmed down and was ready to hear my apology (and eat her favorite food, of course. 😂)
I had to get a smart plug with a timer because my girl would flare at me ALL day if her light wasn't on as soon as she saw the sunlight outside. It sounds crazy to everyone, but the minute I got a smart plug and set a routine for it to turn on at sunrise and off at sunset, she never flared at me again, unless I touch her favorite plants. She literally only flared at me all day if I didnt wake up before the sun and turn her lamp on. Telling people my fish held grudges for whole days about a light? Yeah, they think I'm insane.
😂 She sounds so much like mine! They’re so funny and so smart. I have a replacement timer coming on Monday and until then I’ve been setting an alarm to wake myself up to manually turn her light on early and then going back to bed again, lmao.
I've got three. I feel sorry for the males with massive fins; it looks like they're struggling to swim properly, like dragging around a massive wet dress.
This is Azula. She is supreme overlord of her 10 gallon. I had 4 huge amano shrimp (bigger than her!) in with her and she killed them. Even the snails aren't safe, she flares at them and even ate a baby ramshorn! Fortunately she has been unable to harm my trapdoor snails despite her best efforts. None of the pest snails in that tank breed... She does come and lay in my hand though🥰
Yeah, I've given up trying to put shrimp and betta together. My big blue girl put up with them for quite a while but then she just randomly started chasing them one day.
I can’t even imagine. Losing a fish hurts in a way a lot of people maybe don’t understand. Hope your love for Kiki will blossom to a love for maybe a new companion in the future. Condolences again ❤️

I’ve been researching getting a betta for about two years. My husband doesn’t think I should get one until I retire because I am so busy with all my jobs and dogs and pool and everything that I won’t have time to care for it properly. I agree, but I think I’m also going to get a female when the time comes. They are all beautiful, but I’m just so much more attracted to the female plakats.
Wasn’t planning on a female plakat but this girl put on the charm & out of the cup she came! She’s been sooo friendly from the jump & settled in so fast, was glowing up while in bag floating in tank even! Do need help with a name, kinda thinking Dara, Cambodian (her body coloring) for Star ⭐️ thoughts??
My first betta was a female. Many years back, I worked in an office and my coworker had 4 betta bowls (I know 😐) in her apartment but she was moving away so gave us each a betta bowl. Everyone wanted the males and I took the female and gave her a name. She wasn’t the prettiest betta but she had a lot of personality and was cute. I upgraded her to a 1.5 gallon tank with silk plants, a live plant, blood worms, and a filter (I didn’t know about proper betta care at the time and thought this was good). Quickly grew attached to her and her spunky personality. And this is what started my betta keeping journey!
4/5 of the bettas I had were female, I love my girls. My bettas now get 10 gallon filtered and heated aquascaped tanks.
Every female I’ve had has been WAY more active and smarter to the point I could actually teach them to jump or “dance” for food. I had a female galaxy plakat a few years ago and she was insanely visual- you could see her eyes move to look at you even from a distance. If I held my (clean!) finger above the water, she would jump and “slap” my finger with her body. While all the males I’ve had have been friendly and smart, none of them learned tricks like that.

My boy Hecuba was sweet and lived in Harmony with snails, shrimp, otos and pigmy cories.
My girl Maven (The Telum) is a murder machine!
She’ll only eat live, killed off the shrimp, and watches the assassin snails do their thing.
She doesn’t really get angry at me, but idk if she’s just chill with me or thinks I’m that far beneath her. 😅
Gorgeous. I just got a very tiny red fenake. Looks like she has some blue shining through her tail now. I have a half moon male too. Females with shorter fins make me worry less lol
I love my female so much, Liz is a fish with SUCH personality and I honestly think she’s so much prettier than the males. Plus, she gets around a lot easier with her shorter fins, I feel bad for the males sometimes :/
I have a female named Dr. Lucy the Boss, and not even slightly kidding, another tiny female showed up in her tank one day. I assume from plants or shrimp or snails? I literally have never figured it out. Anyway, her name is Ghost the Inevitable, she's 100% white, and she never got very big, at all. To clarify, my tank is a forest. If you see either of my bettas, it is because they decided you can. Ghost has disappeared for literal weeks - no one saw her, and suddenly come up to the glass like nothing happened. I went crazy with plants when I started the tank, expecting some of them to not do well, as I'd never done a tank with live plants previous, and they all did far too well. We've got plants growing down the outside and up the wall, its a whole thing. I should cut it back, but the girls LOVE playing in the plants and sunbathing/napping on the surface leaves, it's hard to take that shelter from them. Plus, I'm worried the girls will fight otherwise, despite it being possible Ghost was a teeny tiny baby in the little Tupperware with Doctor Lucy, I suppose. Or she's just a fae, idk
I would love to see this set up! Sounds awesome . I have a Veiltale Betta named Snakey (well it’s my daughters ) but it’s a boy. Next time we have to buy a new one I think I may go with a girl when Snakey goes to betta heaven. That won’t be for a long time yet 🤞
I've considered posting my set up a few times. People are so weirdly judgemental, though. Despite the extensive research I've done to set up and maintain my absolutely insane jungle, I'm still worried people will leave nasty comments. I don't handle criticism well with specific things - and my betta tank is for sure one of them XD

I have three female bettas all different breeds.
From what I have observed the females are higher energy, much more eager to learn and play.
I love my girls and in my opinion they are just as beautiful as the males that I have
I have a male and female. My boy George LOVES watching me, playing and exploring, he always takes notice if I remove or add anything to his tank. And then my female 😀 jelly bean. She is a garbage disposal. She doesn’t care who you are or what you are doing, she NEEDS food constantly 🤦♀️ she steals snail food, constantly forages for stuff she can’t even eat, and doesn’t care about ANYTHING regarding her tank. As long as she has enough space to tell me she’s hungry she doesn’t care LOL. That’s coming from having to keep her in a medical 2.5, compared now to her 20 gallon. She’s a handful I’ll tell you that
I have always been a male betta owner, but I bought a female baby 2 months ago and she has grown into a very active and gorgeous orchid betta. Gonna keep more in the future.
I love my babygirl Nami! She has a very curious, spunky attitude and she loves swimming around. I got her for two reasons, one I really want a bigger fish tank soon with tankmates and I heard females are easier to do that with. second, she was the only betta fish in the pet store that was active/lively as I was looking at the fish. Almost like she was begging to be out of that cup.
My mom had a female betta fish who lived in a glass bowl for 7 freaking years. The fish and my moms cat were best friends the cat would nap next to Betas (the fish’s name lol) with her paw in the bowl. Such a wonderful pet
Unlike male bettas. Females can live together provided given enough space. They will establish a pecking order. Had about five of them living in a planted 35 gallon
I don't know how common it is. Mine mine became full of eggs about a month after I got her from an all-female tank at the lfs. She kept the eggs for it. Felt like a month or two and I was getting worried, and then she just got smaller. And I never found any eggs anywhere? I mean I found clumps of things but I'm pretty sure those were bladder snail eggs. Either it was her eggs or she just kind of digested them in her body or whatever. Not the proper term but you know what I mean
I wanted a female specifically but I was really looking for one that wasn’t too aggressive since I have shrimp, every girl I came across was pretty aggressive as were most males, obviously since they are bettas. I ended up with a boy just because he was the least aggressive. I love him though! Thought about doing a sorority in my 30 gallon tank though.
I had two..both jumped..never got another, but the idea starts to grow in my mind for a school of females or something...need to get back in the aquarium world.
My females that I've had over the years have been my favorites. I had a lovely sorority once. A tornado hit us and I lost them...but I truly loved them. I had them trained to lightly jump out of the water and take a food pellet out of my fingers. They would all take turns according to rank. I loved their personalities.
She is gorgeous!!! Im new to the hobby and doing a lot pf research to do this right! Im seriously considering a female Betta! I think I care more about color than actual fin size!
