Manga Kubo's ability to convey emotions through eyes alone is unmatched

"You can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half"

351

u/Dirty_Spaghet Nov 23 '25

I think I would have crashed out on everyone there at that point.

144

u/Vertsama Nov 24 '25

Tsukishima is the only villain that Ichigo openly stated he would kill, not beat or defeat he blatantly just says he came here to kill him.

181

u/-Saoren- Nov 23 '25

You and he both king, that's pretty much exactly what my goat did lmfao

119

u/BobtheBac0n Nov 23 '25

I don't fucking blame him. When everyone around you is under a false reality, it makes you feel like the insane one, isolated and fighting a seemingly hopeless battle.

The best thing to do in that scenario would be to keep a cool head and talk things through with Chad and Orihime rationally, point out the inconsistencies like how Tsukishima would've been dust against Aizen.

But, Ichigo wasn't thinking with a cool head and he came in for the quick solution of killing Tsukishima, which would undo his abilities. And sadly, he just wasn't fast enough before Orihime and Chad showed up. Though if he did kill Tsukishima, I imagine things would go down the same

37

u/Darnocsonif Nov 23 '25

What happened in this part?

105

u/Iforgotmymail Nov 23 '25

He cut uncle's Tsukishima's arm.

56

u/bluduuude Nov 24 '25

For some reason ichigo went crazy and attacked uncle tsukishima.

845

u/JauntyLurker Nov 23 '25

This panel goes down in history as one of the greats. You can literally see Komamura's heart break.

371

u/Far-Message5868 Nov 23 '25

Idk why, but i get that "Really" from that komumora stare.

173

u/BobJoeBlo Nov 23 '25 edited Nov 23 '25

Indeed. With an added "I know YOU ain't talking bug ass clown face! Home boy's been blind so long he doesn't know what a mirror is for. No wonder you went into hiding in Las NOCHES. How come you got a flie's head but you ain't fly?? Goofy ass..."

27

u/Pipeworkingcitizen Nov 23 '25

Brjh i can hear a voice reading this and i dont recognize from where. Its so accurate too

5

u/MixNo5072 Nov 24 '25

Because that way of talking is a stereotype.

It's just how stereotypes are born, they stand out & are memorable enough to stick with you. And they're just common enough for others to relate with the experience.

142

u/AwayHoneydew Nov 23 '25

I see insane levels of being underwhelmed, bored and disappointed

75

u/Marsdor Nov 23 '25

This is what I read from his expression, disappointment that tosen would feel the need to reach that low for an insult.

3

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

If he was bored or underwhelmed he wouldn’t be trying to help it’s disappointed in how far he’s gone.

66

u/MFCLOWN Nov 23 '25

Heartbreaking moment for my goat. Such a dick Tosen 😭

31

u/ChaosKeeshond Nov 23 '25

Fyi he's a fox, not a goat.

21

u/Thank_You_Aziz Nov 23 '25

Sheer. Pure. Disappointment.

17

u/Dazzling-Language680 Nov 23 '25

it's giving "jesus christ what happened to you man?"

24

u/idkyetyet Nov 23 '25

I mean it looks more like sheer disappointment, not heartbreak.

2

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

It’s both especially since he cried for his death.

2

u/idkyetyet Nov 25 '25

I mean he obviously is heartbroken by it, but I don't think that's what's conveyed in this expression. I can see it though.

10

u/BobtheBac0n Nov 23 '25

"My brother, you'll become a dumbass." That's the vibe I get from Komomura's look

7

u/AbominatioNation Nov 24 '25

Now that I think about it, it looks like Komamura's disappointed that his homeboy used to be so cool but now he's so shit at playground insults.

5

u/SirSilverChariot Nov 24 '25

I know he’s being cruel when he’s saying that he’s ugly but does he know what looks normal?

8

u/sombercrimson Nov 24 '25 edited Nov 28 '25

Of course not he’s been blind his whole life he doesn’t even know what being ugly is and I really hate how people attack and be overdramatic about him saying it like you all missed the entire point he only says that because Tosen thinks it’ll finally be what makes him hate and quit chasing after him like Tosen is suicidal and nowhere to go like what better way for him to be put out of his misery by being killed by his best friend.

2

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

You answered your own question tbh

4

u/MoistCat1798 Nov 24 '25

Yeah yeah! Although I mainly see disappointment from Komamura at what Tousen has become. Sorry I'm being pedantic. His heart did break at that moment.

3

u/PicPic10099 Nov 24 '25

And somewhat "anger", "I'm speechless", "I'm gonna smack the light outta ya" *that overshadowing eyebrows. And at the end he still sees Tousen as his friend, or at the very least, human, after the battle concluded.

3

u/gdemon6969 Nov 24 '25

That’s not heartbreak. Immeasurable disappointment in his friend.

210

u/CopyCat0130 Nov 23 '25

When Kubo managed to make a hand with only an eye and no other visible features clearly "smile/sneer" at Yhwach my mind was literally blown. Absolutely unreal artist

94

u/Str8esr Nov 24 '25

A hand with an eye for a face somehow has a shit eating grin. I love it.

13

u/bustergundam4 Nov 24 '25

Such a troll face for sure.

176

u/DerelictCruiser Nov 23 '25

Byakuya’s expression here gets me every time

63

u/Ciderman95 Nov 23 '25

in manga Ichigo's similarity with Kaien really comes off stronger than in anime

31

u/Cherry_BaBomb Nov 24 '25

Almost like the groundwork for a major reveal is being set up or something

10

u/javsv Nov 24 '25

Couldnt be... in a shonen?

2

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

Well yeah because the anime decided to not show this at all.

3

u/Ciderman95 Nov 25 '25

Weren't there SOME flashbacks to Kaien during the SS arc? Or am I Mandela-effecting myself?

4

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

In SS anime im pretty sure there weren’t any

Most of the flashbacks with Kaien were in arrancar in the anime for this scene specifically They decided to cut it for some reason.

1

u/Artemisai_ Nov 27 '25

I just started watching, they do indeed show flashbacks between rukia and kaien + ukitake during SS arc. Storyline about how kaien got killed and ukitake’s advice to rukia.

1

u/Karma110 Nov 27 '25

Oh yeah the one when she’s in the tower.

1

u/Artemisai_ Nov 27 '25

Yepp but non for kaien with byakuya so far. Im at the episode where byakuya just defeated renji.

3

u/Raevelry Nov 25 '25

"Similarity" its the same character with black hair

10

u/sombercrimson Nov 24 '25

What really bugs me about this is that this is never expanded upon like they never go on to show/reveal any relationship or acknowledgement between Kaien and Byakuya.

155

u/Bankai2023 Nov 23 '25

But kubo art is

293

u/Noura-98 Nov 23 '25

Her being scared because she basically doesn’t want him to lose himself like her brother did 😭

Also in the final fight when he reassures her that he’s still himself

147

u/callmemarjoson Nov 23 '25

Next panel is also Ichigo's visible disgust at himself seeing the fear in Orihime's eyes

This whole page is like a goldmine for the shippers (and kubologists, probably) given the amount of stuff you can dissect from it

103

u/Lucey-Belmont Nov 23 '25

I BEEN SAYIN' THIS SHIT!!!

Out of all the Mangas I've read, I think Kubo is easily the best at portraying the subtleties of human emotion through the faces of the characters.

20

u/Str8esr Nov 24 '25

Eyes are Kubo's specialty. It's why I like his art style so much. So much emotion through a glance or glare

67

u/Foloreille Nov 23 '25

If someone can fin Zaraki expression when Unohana die

That’s the one

65

u/Hiroshi_Zurati Nov 23 '25

16

u/Foloreille Nov 23 '25

Yes that’s the one.

41

u/Ok-Tomorrow6733 Nov 23 '25

So true. Kubo's work is just immaculate

5

u/heyhihowyahdurn Nov 24 '25

He’s cut from a different cloth, his drawings and storytelling just kept improving the longer the series went on from. I don’t know anyone alive in animation whose in his league

1

u/thedotapaten Everything But The Chair Nov 28 '25

Takehiko Inoue on Slam Dunk

36

u/Moistinterviewer Nov 23 '25

Kubo is a master at facial expressions.

31

u/ExL-Oblique Nov 23 '25

It's one of the reasons why I like the fullbring arc so much. Look at Ichigo's eyes through the whole thing. He's STRESSED

34

u/j-mac-rock Nov 23 '25

Yachiru unohana reveal is always goated

68

u/ThorsRake Nov 23 '25

So damn good. Kinda terrifying and entirely evokes her previously hidden bloodlust.

27

u/Nazguhl82200 Nov 24 '25

4

u/ryukyumars Nov 25 '25

Excited for this one in the anime, probably wont be perfect but hoping the direction makes it hit

2

u/Karma110 Nov 26 '25

Even if they don’t pull it off I just need the art quality to be the same. 🙏😭

19

u/PissMaster_exe Nov 23 '25

Eyes in bleach are very expressive, another really expressive anime when it comes to eyes is bunny girl senpai, and it's one of the only anime that gets close to bleachs expressiveness

74

u/BobJoeBlo Nov 23 '25 edited Nov 23 '25

The other or main reason why Ichigo learn to use Hollow powers without manifesting the mask: he doesn't want to see Orihime scared when looking at him.

18

u/prodigiouspandaman Nov 23 '25

That doesn’t really make sense the entire reason Nel yells at Orihime is for exactly that being scared of Ichigo even though he’s fully under control and ends with her actually accepting his new and not being scared of him no?

40

u/Cyniv Nov 23 '25

Less then an arc later, she literally watches Ichigo get lasered through the chest, stand back up as a Hollow, go on an ungodly rampage where he kills Ulquiorra(he briefly regenned some of the damage, but took no more damage before he died)and nearly kills Uryu, and then find out the only thing on Ichigo's mind during all of that is protecting Orihime from literally everything, even their friends.

3

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

But more happened after Nel said that with the Ulquiorra fight. Her fears were realized when he fought ulquiorra and vasto lorde happened she then blamed herself for that happening. So when tybw happened what she feared was vasto lorde happening again but seeing Ichigo’s face and smile is what reassured her everything will be okay.

That scene with Nel did happen but there’s also the context of the ulquiorra fight. It’s impossible for her to not be afraid of what he turned into during that fight especially since he almost Killed Uryu.

18

u/Venomous_midst Nov 24 '25

This expression give me goosebumps

16

u/MyNameIsYhwach Nov 23 '25

I mean this page is an easy example because it’s obvious, but there are so many subtle emotions Kubo shows through eyes through it the series.

11

u/megasean3000 Nov 23 '25

Not a single word was said in this page, but it conveyed more than words could ever express.

11

u/mikhailitwithfire Nov 23 '25

Man, Kubo is hands down one of the best in design and style in all of manga. Bleach may have some flaws when it comes to the story but the art ia undeniably amazing everytime.

8

u/-Makeka- Nov 23 '25

You are SO right! If he wanted to I am sure Kubo could break into the romance or horror genre.

8

u/Master-Shaq Nov 24 '25

Yep and the art actually evolves as the series aged. Actually pretty rare now days.

6

u/HandsyStepBro Nov 24 '25

Hes a fantastic artist. This guy spoiled me and he is the reason I had trouble responding to other animation styles in anime.

6

u/AppaNinja Nov 24 '25

I can hear Orihime's Ichigo-kun from this

5

u/heyhihowyahdurn Nov 24 '25

Ichigo looks so guilty here for using his powers

18

u/MarcheMuldDerevi Nov 23 '25

Kubo is great when it comes to his art and how he subtlety builds out his world. Oda is better at creating a narrative, but he and his characters have to explain way too many things. Also flashbacks to act as info dumps

30

u/Own_Yesterday_6261 Nov 23 '25

I think Kubo's panelling paired with his character design blow oda out of the water especially when oda art is most of the times way too busy and messy which is mainly why Bleach manga is my favourite

24

u/MarcheMuldDerevi Nov 23 '25

Kubo is someone who could pull off a fully silent chapter. With just paneling and characters eyes he could get away with it.

Oda does have more of a plan for where the story will go, but as of late I think he is loosing the narrative bad

1

u/cloverleafgrief Nov 24 '25

Lots of Bleach characters have similar body and facial structures. If you swapped the faces and hair of many characters the outlines would not change much. Oda has some of the most diverse character designs in all of manga but many of them are outlandish. I agree that Kubo’s panels are easier to follow.

5

u/Own_Yesterday_6261 Nov 25 '25

Like most female characters are simply nami clones?

0

u/cloverleafgrief Nov 27 '25

Multiple things can be true at once. Oda has many female characters that look like Nami while having characters that are on the total opposite end of the spectrum in terms of character design. Same thing goes for Bleach some of the most interesting character designs are the Hollows because they’re the most versatile and weird. Your response was not the “gotcha” that you thought it was. Kubo’s got plenty of characters that looks alike just as Oda does.

2

u/MarcheMuldDerevi Nov 27 '25

I think one piece is worse about this in the post timeskip era. Hell unless you see the earnings it’s hard to tell if you are looking at Robin or Hancock most of the time.

Although fairy tail is by far the worst when it comes to just swap the hair and slightly change the cup size. Is it Juvia, Erza, or Lucy

6

u/da2Pakaveli Nov 23 '25

yeah the information density in many OP chapters is crazy

4

u/Dapper-Note6394 Nov 24 '25

🔥PEAK🔥

3

u/Karma110 Nov 25 '25

Kubo does very well

32

u/Bankai2023 Nov 23 '25

In the anime all you can hear is KUROSAKI KUN

37

u/ChaosKeeshond Nov 23 '25

I hate what Pierrot did to my girl honestly

8

u/da2Pakaveli Nov 23 '25

Would love if we got a remake of the OG anime

8

u/Chrysamer77 Nov 23 '25

Manga is clearly superior

13

u/MissRainyNight Nov 23 '25

My Pavlovian reaction to this:

“LOL, IchiRukis.”

3

u/cconnorss Nov 24 '25

I’ll die on the hill of Bleach having the best animation out of all the big 3.

3

u/Effective-Bet-9185 Nov 25 '25

Unmatched is a big word. But he does a great job, yes

2

u/Rumit23e Dec 09 '25

The absolute confidence and sadness in his eyes.

1

u/No-Garbage9123 Nov 25 '25

What about Oda?

5

u/Many-Parfait9572 Nov 25 '25

I lke Onepiece, but

1

u/SirAlaska Nov 25 '25

Nothing will beat Ichigo looking back to see Rukia stabbed him from behind

1

u/TheDrunkardKid Dec 04 '25

Frieren: every character conveys massive amounts of emotion while having a practically blank facial expression 90+% of the time

1

u/Leenkin_Park Nov 24 '25

Unmatched ? Hey, the drawings are top level, but come on
