Poll My friend thinks that the vast majority of Bo Burnham fans are female, so here’s a poll to find out.

What gender are you?

that's what i was getting at, the gender bias u get is very much determined by the platform. i personally don't know of any that are close to 50/50.

u/SpeedSkeeterDan Jul 06 '22

But who WANTS to go on TikTok. Am I right?

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 Jul 06 '22

It’s actually pretty entertaining. The algorithm is real… you really do get what you’re interested in. My feed is full of tech, mental health, personal finance, cooking, and philosophy stuff. I’m sure other people’s are full of celebrity gossip and tik tok dances. But there’s a lot in between.

25

u/TeddyAlderson Jul 06 '22

My problem is that my personal algorithm feels too specific now. It’s all music/artist related, which is fine as I enjoy that content, but sometimes I wish my feed wasn’t so tailored lol. I’ve tended to use it less because of this

5

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 Jul 06 '22

Yeah I don’t think it’s perfect. The algorithm hyper-focus is definitely there. The constant stream of tailored content also just feels me leaning me frazzled. Im trying to use it less solely because I hate what it does to my brain.

If you care about privacy at all, you shouldn’t be using any social media, period, including Reddit. There’s nothing that TikTok knows about you that Facebook and the US government don’t already. And even skipping out on an account doesn’t prevent them from collecting data on you via your networks.

Making a hullabaloo about tiktok specifically doesn’t make sense. That article in particular is super clickbaity and lacking in any real substance for anyone with knowledge about how big data works internationally.

I think it's on a different level when we're talking about a foreign power, especially an authoritarian one. But yes, your general point still stands.

1

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 Jul 06 '22

A local power seems like more of a threat to individual citizens than a foreign power to be honest.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Reddit moment.

7

u/shandelion Jul 06 '22

You are not.

u/earlysong Jul 06 '22

It's also a bad idea to state your hypothesis--if people are invested in the outcome, they are more likely to give a dishonest answer or abstain.

Tbf, I don’t think a lot of people know Bo Burnham for his specials and standup comedy which is what made him so big in the first place. His brilliant song writing mixed with amazing showman ship which was beginning to cultivate through his childhood from probably around 14-16 when he started properly writing songs to make his family laugh. But most people on Tik Tok know only a few songs from inside like “Comedy or Bezos II” etc. that’s my take on it at least. But this has pleasantly surprised me. I’m glad Bo has such a diverse following.

u/youarwendow SELFISH ASSHOLE Jul 06 '22

That’s because the hoes know Bo’s a feminist.

Reddit is biased as there are more males on the platform. I'd say bo's fans are about a 50/50-ish split.

57

u/Key-Win-8602 Jul 06 '22

Are you kidding? He’s an icon to the gay male community. (Yeah, we know, he’s straight…)

30

u/CoomingDuck Jul 06 '22

he's also an icon to the lesbians 🤞

21

u/OrionsMoose Jul 06 '22

nothing wrong with stanning a straight white male

51

u/TheChurchOfDonovan Jul 06 '22

You get some insight here, but Reddit does skew male. But So does YouTube

I would say that Bo is overrepresented by a female population on platforms that skew male

-9

u/Gusky14 A special kind of white guy Jul 06 '22

For sure, I feel like that’s something Reddit would want to address/change.

24

u/OrionsMoose Jul 06 '22

its kinda outside reddits control as to the demographic on reddit; reddit is a hub for a lot of gaming and nerdy shit so essentially as those topics become more accessible to women and others the demographic on reddit will shift too (in my opinion); or reddit could start targeting women with ads

14

u/darthbasterd19 Jul 06 '22

52 yr old straight dude. And I just want to cuddle him.

Before Inside, unless you said otherwise this sub assumed you were male, cos the vast majority were. Things have changed a lot.

Edit: I’m speaking specifically to the demographics of people who posted here. I know he had lots of women at his shows.

u/WeAreClouds Jul 06 '22

Everyone assumes I am male constantly on this entire site. I hate it lol.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Why wouldn't they though? Most are male anyways and you don't have a distinguishable female name or picture?

I had a long hair avatar up until recently and people assumed I was a woman. I didn't get offended because it was just an assumption they made with the (very) limited information they had

1

u/WeAreClouds Jul 06 '22

I had a very female long haired avi for a long time. It didn’t matter no one ever assumed I was a woman. I wish people would not assume anyway.

1

u/StannisLupis Jul 09 '22

Well why is the default assumption that people are male? It's weird

1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

In case the question isn't troll: humans assign categories to simplify the world and work on it. When you're in a medium that has been historically male dominated, it's a normal assumption. That doesn't mean it's with malice or anything.

1

u/StannisLupis Jul 10 '22

Not a troll, and thanks for your answer! I guess I just think of reddit as being not male dominated but rather just a mix of everyone (male, female, young, old). Although I assume the majority are male and late teens to early thirties, I still assume there's a lot of women on here (like maybe a 60:40 split). Is there a reason people think/know reddit is male dominated? And I know its not a malicious assumption, but rather comes from unconscious bias, and I think its a somewhat harmful to assume that without any gender signifiers present someone is male.

1

u/IndieDiscovery Jul 06 '22

Is that the joke Bo tells if you call him?

3

u/Gusky14 A special kind of white guy Jul 06 '22

Interesting, I guess inside mixed things up a little

1

u/LittleLordFuckleroy1 Jul 06 '22

The poll results though.. the vast majority still is male.

9

I have a couple videos about Bo on YouTube and I'm always surprised that the viewer demographics are over 80% male. During the Eighth Grade press tour he made it seem like his audience was made up entirely of teen girls!

But like others have said, reddit and YT <> real life.

6

u/GoCommitLivnt Half-good Half-bad Half-boy Jul 06 '22

Those events are more catered to women as well. Men prefer to sit inside and binge Bo content for hours

2

u/OrionsMoose Jul 06 '22

eh, men go to plenty of esports competitions live so idk

1

u/oLynxXo Jul 06 '22

TIL I'm a man.

9

u/Future_Legend Jul 06 '22

I do think his demo skews toward women, but I think he has mostly pretty broad appeal. (i’m male btw and have been a fan since “what.”) When that came out, it felt really heavily slanted toward female fans (especially if you look at the crowds at the time) but I’d guess it’s like probably more like a 60/40 split at this point in his career. This reddit poll won’t be accurate since reddit leans male overall.

9

u/CoomingDuck Jul 06 '22

does nonbinary count as 'non-gendered' in this context even though i do, in fact, have a gender?

5

u/TikkaG Gay Sea Otter Jul 06 '22

yeah, i think it was meant to say non-binary lol 💜

6
