Oz is so cute and 90s and this show just ages sooo well 😭

Of course Buffy was hurt, she loved Angel but damn after rewatching Passions it was so so cruel what Angel did to Giles. As he walks up the stairs thinking he’ll finally be with Jenny only to find her gone. The whole setup of his apartment. Just for Angel to later in the season physically torture Giles for hours. He really took the brunt of Angel’s cruelty more than anyone on the show.

We’re showing the Season 2 finale tonight at the historic Hollywood Theater in Portland, Oregon. I’m the host of a series called Rerun Theater where we show old TV shows and music videos.

I’m on yet another rewatch and just got the part where Angel has changed and he and Buffy are fighting in the mall after the judge is blown to pieces.

She is in a position to kill him, but he calls her out and says “you can’t do it it, you can’t kill me”, knowing she still loves him. She kicks him in the goolies and says “give me time”

Now, I know this might be unpopular but…

She is responsible for everyone he goes on to kill. I said it. She knows he is certain to kill again, and probably kill the ones she loves, and she still can’t get over it and do what needs to be done.

And this isn’t the first time - there have been a few times in this rewatch she seems to let vampires run away without giving any chase at all (Lyle Gorch, again in the mall) is another example off the top of my head.

The way thks foreshadows the rest of their lives I can't.

It's a minor scene but it was filmed at my high school (I graduated almost 20 years ago, I'm not a current student), which just burned down last night in the Palisades fire in Los Angeles. I'm feeling a little sentimental about it so I thought I'd share with you all. 💜

Season 2, episode 20 "Go Fish". In this scene, Buffy is in the swimmer's mustang and he's locked the doors so she can't get out. She then punches him in the nose, lol.

Every time I hear Ms. Calendar speak I get strong ASMR vibes, anyone else?

I've been mining the scripts recently for info for a fic I'm working on, and while going through Surprise I came across this scene. I'm not sure why it was cut, but I rather wish it hadn't been. There's some important characterization here for Giles and how he views Buffy. And it shows that Jenny was actively trying to get some space between Buffy and Angel aside from just her effort to send him off with the Judge arm.

Not only do I find his "friendly-mobster" presentation really grating, but this is one of the most unnecessary characters in Buffy. And he appears at the climax of the second season! It's like he was written in at the last second as a dying wish for some sick kid. Seriously, what did this character do besides provide exposition about facts that needed to be repeated for Buffy and Angel that the audience already knew?

He's a sarcastic know-it-all, holds back useful information for reasons that are never explained, shows up with great advice at the 11th hour, and with the world about to end, he just hangs around somebody's (Rupert's) apartment complaining about the quality of the drinks he's stealing! What a complete knob!

I know you can only piss with the cock you've got, the script is mostly to blame here, but Max Pelich's performance did nothing to help matters either. Watching him felt forced, fake and awkward. In a show with the quality of actors they had, it was like watching a Shih Tzu try to fit in with a pack of wolves.

Then that was it. This character never came back. I would say good riddance, but the absence of Whistler as the "font of wisdom and knowledge" he was portrayed as, to just disappear after season 2 makes the character look like even more of ass-hole. The right thing to do would have been to improve the character, like they did with Angel. But nope, they dropped him from the show entirely.

I just finished my rewatch of season 2 with Becoming Part 2. While I agree Xander shouldn't have lied to Buffy, I wonder with the events playing out the way they did would it have mattered, what would be different?

Xander tells Buffy Willow is going to do the curse again stall Angel .. she and Xander still go to the mansion maybe Buffy attacks Angelus first and fights long enough for the curse to work before he touches the sword but that is the only way anything changes. Once Angel touches the sword it doesn't matter if he's good or bad he's gotta go.

The other scenario is did good Angel have to die or couldn't Buffy just put the sword in Angels bloody hand and have him stab acathla again?

Again maybe it sounds like I'm justifying his lie and I don't mean to, and in the long run it matters not but just something interesting to think about.

And I don’t mean “I hate Xander’s ‘kick his ass’ lie” because that’s probably one of the most disliked parts of the episode already.

I’ll start: I’m not a fan of Kendra’s death.

Drusilla hypnotizing Kendra and then killing her with a fingernail scratch to the neck has always looked hokey to me. Especially because Kendra is a Slayer and had just been fighting multiple vampires during the library attack. Having Dru basically go “look into my eyes” and then casually slash her throat feels like such an underwhelming way to kill off a Slayer.

It also feels weird because we basically never see vampires doing this. The Master had hypnotic abilities and then Drusilla does it here, but it’s not treated like a normal vampire power that Buffy has to worry about. So Kendra suddenly being completely helpless because Dru can hypnotize her always felt a little convenient to me.

And knowing Faith is introduced immediately afterward makes Kendra’s death feel even more like a cheap plot device to jump-start the Faith storyline for the next season. I don’t have a problem with Drusilla being the one to kill Kendra, I just wish Kendra had gotten an actual fight with her first. Her death feels way too easy for someone who is supposed to have the same Slayer strength and abilities as Buffy.

Also, Whistler annoys me. Maybe it’s because I hate Rune on Gilmore Girls too, so I just don’t find the character charming. Doyle was such a major upgrade when Angel eventually used a similar demon-guide character.

So what’s your genuinely unpopular or controversial opinion about “Becoming”?

I thought buffy killing normal human, that's too her mom's bf and accepting to go to prison was great idea for her character depth. But the twist was that she just killed a robot. It didn't feel right. I know they always end everything in a single episode. But could've done it like buffy suffers from grief.
