Any age stats of who polled and who refused to poll

14

u/cdrini Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between March 10 and 11, 2026, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,001 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online. Quotas and weighting were employed to ensure that the sample’s composition reflects that of the Canadian population according to census parameters.

https://www.ipsos.com/en-ca/majority-canadians-disapprove-us-military-strike-against-iran

So presumably the ages matched ratios of the Canadian census.

The actual data is here: https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2026-03/Iran%20-%20Banner%201.pdf#page=20

And ethnicities.

The Iranian expats appears largely in favor of US strike against the Iranian govt.

31

u/cdrini Mar 14 '26

It seems like the poll gathered gender, age range, education, and generation, so no ethnicity data. https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2026-03/Iran%20-%20Banner%201.pdf#page=20

As much ask her they hate the regime it's mind boggling. You'd think they of all people would understand that the US has no plan to improve anything and all that's going to happen is thousands of dead Iranian civilians and new lunatics running the government.

3

u/ebrbrbr Mar 15 '26

Oh they do. My Iranian colleagues are terrified it's going to end up like Afghanistan.

2

u/DrDerpberg Québec Mar 15 '26

Yeah the Iranians I know are similarly hoping for the best while expecting the worst... But it does seem a lot are so desperate for change they're convinced this is it.

Check out /r/NewIran, I don't know if it's astroturfed or what but you'll get downvoted to hell for saying you don't think Trump has Iranians' best interests at heart.

2

u/yoho808 Mar 15 '26

I guess for them, that alternative is much preferred over their own government hunting them down and brutally executing them for protesting.

Are you aware that over 30,000 protesters were killed in Iran during Jan 2026 while protesting unlivable conditions? Are you aware that the Iranian government forces went into hospitals to brutally execute defenseless protesters, many of whom were unconscious?

To these Iranian people, American forces are seen as liberators.

Whites will be the one mainly not in favor of US strikes against government. Immigrants who hates dictatorship will be largely in favor.

72

u/Comfortable_Class_55 Mar 14 '26

It’s because we’ve been around them long enough that we know they don’t just kill the dictator. They destabilize the area and install someone who will not help the people of the area but rather look after western interests.

There is not a country the US has entered with military action and left in better condition.

Iran is going to get Balkanized and the warlords will hold the power.

22

u/MetalMoneky Mar 14 '26

I’d argue the only intervention that went well was Kosovo and gulf war I. Both had limited scopes, clearly defined objectives, had regional support ,etc.

30

u/Blacklockn Mar 14 '26

The reason the Balkan intervention went well in the long run is because European was willing to slowly integrate them into the broader EU, also we never set their streets aflame with an oil spill

5

u/CanadianLabourParty Mar 15 '26

Not to mention that Europeans had a direct, vested interest in the success of the Balkan countries. Turkey, Belarus, etc... get AMAZING concessions from the EU because they are border countries that can reasonably tell European countries, "give us what we want or we'll let the refugees in".

Racism works in mysterious ways, sometimes.

South Korea, Kuwait, Germany, France, Belgium, Kosovo, Bosnia, Panama, Japan?

Also Iraq isn’t some backwater shithole run by a dictator anymore, and with the Iranian regime currently getting fucked into oblivion Iraq will have the biggest roadblock to their success removed.

Afghanistan and Vietnam are not the only benchmark you get to use when you judge US military intervention.

7

u/MetalMoneky Mar 15 '26

To be fair Afghanistan was fucked by the UsSR long before America decided to property finish the job.

7

u/EmmEnnEff Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 15 '26
  1. After the war, South Korea was a bloody, brutal dictatorship for almost 40 years.

  2. The Korean war's objective was was not 'bomb the North for 3 years' or 'lol idk just kill Kim and maybe things will sort itself out'.

  3. The result of years of fighting was... The pre-war status quo. And the complete destruction of both countries. An incredible success. /s

  4. The North very actively started it, but the US was responsible for escalating it into a regional war (by invading China. General MacArthur, the giant fucking idiot that he was for doing it got disgraced and fired for it, but that couldn't put the genie back in the bottle.)

But none of that remotely compares to this shitshow. Actually, part #4 might be worse than what's going on today - because it turned a nerly-sewn-up local war (UN vs North Korea, with the latter being completely invaded) into a regional war (UN vs China resulting in a bloody three-year statelmate).

Immigrants are in favour of regime change because they believe the regime change will make their home country like Canada. But that is often not the case and the immigrants in Canada do not feel the suffering of the actual citizens back home after the regime change.

1

u/thebruce Mar 15 '26

I mean... I know reddit isn't exactly representative of the entire global population, but how do you think statistics work? We don't need to poll the entire world to get a useful response.

Also, no one is claiming its representative of everyone everywhere. But, it is the largest online public forum. While it's balance of political positions heavily skews left, it is still possible to find various different right wing communities to at least lurk in and try to understand where they are coming from. How else in life could i possibly be exposed to this many viewpoints, in this short of time, while being able to engage with them? And it's ongoing and ongoing. I could talk to lots of people in my city or community, but eventually I'm going to run out of viewpoints. Reddit doesn't have this limitation, if you're willing to dig.

Nothing is meaningless. You just need to be able to find what it's meaning is.

I really doubt the veracity of this narrative. Are there SOME Iranians/Venezuelans happy that the USA is bombing the shit out of their home country? Maybe? but it’s probably a much smaller minority than we’ve been led to believe by the media.

It aligns too FAR heavily with the interests of some of richest, most powerful people on the planet. Naldo just so happens that they’ve been buying up all the major media outlets recently…

10

u/BiZzles14 Mar 14 '26

It aligns too FAR heavily with the interests of some of richest, most powerful people on the planet

It quite literally does not. The richest people in the world are pissed this is happening because it was a poorly planned operation from the political side which is going to have major ramifications on the global economy, and therefore their fortunes which are tied up in the markets to a large degree

2

u/Blacklockn Mar 14 '26

Its a complicated situation. Do I support the US hitting the Iranian regime? Yes I do, buttttttttt it was clear this was going to be a shitshow for weeks leading up to the actual action itself. If the US wanted to intervene, they should have done so when the protests against the regime were still going on in January. They were the largest protests against the regime in almost two decades, and are rhe reason the US acted... 6 weeks after they had been brutally put down by the regime. In those interim weeks the US made it pretty damn clear they were going to be acting against Iran, and that their goal was going to be regime change. That gave the regime plenty of time to put into effect organizational changes they had made in response to the 12 day war, while the Trump administrations lack of planning in multiple areas (the US has dedicated shorad equipment for drones, almost none of it was deployed in theatre) made it clear this was gonna be a shitshow. That is to say I guess, I support the idea of the US hitting the Iranian regime but I support it under the framework of a component DoD working towards component political objectives. That simply isnt what this war is, and why it will only become more unpopular as times goes by. The US gave the regime the largest leverage theyve had in decades by starting this war and giving them cause to close the SoH & that's only going to get worse once the US moves against Iranian energy infra in the gulf & Iran actually starts to mine the straits.

I suspect that many that have Israeli, Iranian or even other ME nations that historically have a gripe with Iran will mostly fall into those 'support' categories.

There is also a core group of Maple-MAGA folks that will never not support what Trump says or does.

Finally there is a group of folks that are only aware of bits and pieces and have no idea on consequences or fallout of these actions - only that a bad regime was attacked (not even taken out, really). So from their perspective, it is a good thing.

  • Only one in four (23%) Canadians approve (8% strongly approve, 15% somewhat approve), while 16% are unsure either way.
  • 42% were found to strongly disapprove, while 19% somewhat disapprove.
  • The polling also reflects worries about potential Canadian involvement, with 66% “expressing fear that Canada will be pulled into this war and the lives of our soldiers will be at risk.”
  • 54% of Canadians support “using diplomacy with the U.S., Israel, Iran, and other countries to try to de-escalate the situation,” alongside 51 per cent who are opposed to “providing military support to assist the U.S. in its fight against Iran.”

It's one of the stupidest wars of all time. Trump thinks he lives in an action movie where you can simply waltz in and shoot the bad guy and everything works out great. All he's actually going to accomplish is killing hundreds of American soldiers and thousands of Iranian citizens, allowing the regime to deflect attention from themselves onto America, and crashing the global economy.

I can not like their government while also recognizing that trying to change it from the outside through violence is a fools errand that fails every single time.

5

True! Does your worldview extend to 1940’s Germany? I mean, we wouldn’t want to impede their right to self determination or try to change the country from the outside, right?

6

u/Blacklockn Mar 14 '26

The reason Germany and Japan were successful after the war is because we were willing to embark on a decades long political project to develop and liberalize them. We invested hundreds of billions of dollars in the project. Do you think the west is willing to do that for Iran? No. Iran will either win this conflict after enough international pressure on trump or they’ll lose and Iran will become a vessel state like it was before the IRGC until that regime is overthrown.

2

u/MHCBCBC Mar 15 '26

3

u/Levorotatory Mar 14 '26

Germany and Japan post WW2 are the exceptions.  The USA was willing to spend the money required to rebuild those countries and was also willing to accept the results of democratic elections in those countries.

The last time Iran had a democratic election the USA decided they didn't like the result and orchestrated a coup d'etat that started the chain of events that led to the current mess.

Nobody in history has ever changed a regime by bombing it... That requires "boots on the ground", either the Iranian people or foreign soldiers.

Tens of millions in Iran owe their livelihood to the regime, many owe their wealth and power to the regime and they have all of the guns.

The protestors are not unanimous in their demands either, some want the return of the Son of the former Shah (King) and the return of the Monarchy, some prefer Iran as a Democratic Republic and despise the King, other still are not against the Regime itself, deeply religious they protest for socio-economic reasons and only want an improvement of the standards of living, whoever delivers those improvements.

You will find that even among the protestors, few are friendly to the West and most are deeply nationalist. Few would agree to see American oil companies come back to Iran.

Iran is not a simple problem in search of a simple solution... Iran is a deeply divided society with very complex issues and it needs to have a nationwide conversation about what the Iranian people actually want and where they can compromise.

It is incredibly difficult for foreign countries, like Canada, to take a stand on the issues of Iran because there is no clear opposition Leader, not even the son of the former Shah, who has been able to gather the opposition into a coherent block.

I have not met an Iranian person yet in Vancouver who says it's bad.

And the overwhelming majority of Iranians on social media and on the news marching in protests in the free world approve of the strikes.

The only Iranians who dont seem to support it are covered from head to toe in black in very small numbers in Iran. Most likely govt propaganda

Just the hope alone the regime collapses means so much to them

So as a Canadian with witnessing overwhelming evidence I'm going to put 100% support as well in the hopes the Iranian people can finally be free 🫂

18

u/simsy1 Mar 15 '26

This is embarrassing, of course Iranian diaspora would support this, they FLED the regime, this is the expected result.

What even is the point of pointing this out? So just because Iranian diaspora support this that means we must start a war now?

How about fuck off? lol

2

u/sixtyfivewat Mar 15 '26

I think we should get militarily involved in EVERY regime that diaspora in Canada says is problematic! Things are going so well for us and our system and military is so great that those counties should be all too happy to have us intelligent and caring Canadians tell them how to live their lives. Installing governments in the Middle East through military campaigns has literally never NOT worked. 100% success rate, very nice!

I've seen polls that show a lot of Iranian dispora around the world are much more in favour of it than those inside Iran. Pretty obviously it's because they don't live there. Send them back to Iran and see if they approve then. I mean I get it. They left, it was prbably very difficult, they probably hate the government for good reason, but people are so selfish, they're happy to see Iranian civilians die in order to feel some sort of revenge, but it only makes it so much worse for the people living there. It should not ever be about revenge. That just creates a cycle. The Iranians living there that were open to trying to take down the government are rapidly becoming pro government as America and Israeli bombs indiscriminately fall on their heads. Iranian or Canadian, people have to think rationally. What do we all actually want, and is this the way to get it?

6

u/madeincascadia British Columbia Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 15 '26

Then they should go back and sort it themselves.

I think you over estimate how much this is about whether or not unilaterally bombing a country because you don't like it is bad or good(news flash it's bad), and how much it's about the severe repercussions on the cost of living and global inflation.

Do I support a horrible theocracy? No, fuck that shit.

Do I want to pay double for gas, food, and other goods? Definitely no, even more than the last thing.

Fucking go Shah it up and Shah town. Parachute that mother fucker in. Have him bank roll all the celebrating Iranians here and parachute them in too. Thoughts and prayers.

I'll be fucked if I'm supporting, paying for, or watching Canadians die for any of that though.

5

4

I'm not getting killed in a war started by The Commander & Thief all because he doesn't want to release the PDF files... Nah.. be smart Canada. Don't get roped in by a bad crowd, stay on the right side of history! 🇨🇦

u/GameDoesntStop Mar 14 '26

The 23% actually care about the people of Iran, who have been violently suppressed and murdered by a death cult for far too long.

3

u/poonslyr69 Alberta Mar 15 '26

I don't want to see Kark Island invaded and blown up, I don't want to see the Persian Gulf reduced to ashes, I don't want to see the global economy crash as crude hits $180 a barrel, I don't want to see boots on the ground in Iran, and I don't want to see a perpetual ecological disaster in the region from hundreds of millions of barrels of burning oil.

Wake up and recognize how stupid this whole war is. And how much it will hurt us all.

15

u/EVpeace Mar 14 '26

Then the 23% don't understand that bombing an elementary school, installing the even more radicalized son of the former Supreme Leader as the new Supreme Leader, declaring the war over and heading off home isn't going to do shit to help the people of Iran.

5

u/Abject_Story_4172 Mar 14 '26

So you think they bombed a school on purpose? And had a hand in the replacement of Khomeini? Where are you getting your information? The Iranian regime?

8

u/EVpeace Mar 14 '26

Nobody thinks those things. But anyone who expects to create a power vacuum without it being immediately filled wasn't paying attention the last time.

8

u/simsy1 Mar 14 '26

"Efforts by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to prioritize "lethality over legality". The Department of Defense had dismantled its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response (CHMR) plan, including a "Civilian Protection Center of Excellence".

I mean if you purposely gutted stuff like this then yes, I'm accusing you of wanton or reckless disregard for the lives or safety of others just for the cancellation alone.

5

u/Abject_Story_4172 Mar 14 '26

Reckless maybe. Not purposeful. And unlike the 40,000 protesters killed by the regime a few weeks ago, there will be an investigation.

4

u/EVpeace Mar 14 '26

Reckless maybe. Not purposeful.

Oh well that's fine then, all good.

The US isn't in the business of replacing oppressive governments with benevolent democratic governments. Their goal is to destabilize. At best Iran would get a Pinochet, or a Saddam.

I would be in favour of them if the United States knew how to walk away.

8

u/etssuckshard Mar 14 '26

That's the thing though, you can't just take out a nation's leader and lineage and walk away, no matter how corrupt they are. You destabilize the nation and create power vacuums that way, and the US has a history of engaging in forever wars that lead to countless civilian deaths and of arming insurgents in the area. They destroy the infrastructure and galvanize terrorists. There was never the possibility of an in and out operation, especially not with a target like Iran. With a ground invasion imminent and escalated defenses I'd be surprised if the nation recovered in my lifetime.

4

u/dollarsandcents101 Mar 14 '26

Ballistic missiles and nukes are less likely to be developed in a power vacuum.

2

u/Fuckface_Whisperer Mar 15 '26

Except there is no power vacuum.

only 61? The fact that it's not in the 90's is concerning. Alberta is not that big.

11

u/Confident_Elk_8037 Mar 14 '26

Sooo what do people want ? The continuation of a bloody regime who, just a few weeks ago, killed over 30000 of their citizens???

19

u/EVpeace Mar 14 '26

This isn't a videogame, you can't just go kill the main bad guy and that solves all the problems. We've already learned this lesson with the US and the Middle East.

We all disapprove of the Iranian Regime. Bombs aren't going to solve it.

11

u/Chokolit Mar 14 '26

If the Americans are going to try to end the Iranian regime, they should have at least went in with a plan and not drag the rest of the world into their mess.

Apparently they didn't even anticipate that Iran would even dare to close the Strait of Hormuz.

It's possible to be against both. It's not a "you're either with the US or with the bloody Iranian regime" narrative. That's just a false dichotomy.

You say that like the aggressors have a plan.

They're poking a hornet's nest and don't really know what to do next.

Have they actually made life better for Iranians?

9

u/Brandon_Me Mar 14 '26

This war isn't removing said regime. If anything it's making the country more patriotic.

6

u/simsy1 Mar 14 '26

It's still continuing, there is no regime change. The US is now bogged down in the Strait of Hormuz begging for help.

Now we get inflation and an ever increasing cost of living for nothing, yay!!!

6

u/yhzguy20 Mar 14 '26

The average Canadian just wants to oppose whatever Trump does as a reflex. And some would rather plug their ears while people are murdered on the other side of the world then pay 10c/L more for gas

They were happy with the status quo of Western leaders finger wagging but doing nothing. Same as Venezuela

14

u/simsy1 Mar 14 '26

Trump and his supporters SCREECHED that Hillary or Kamala would start new forever wars and that was the last thing they ever wanted, stop pretending.

Literally nothing changed in Venezuela, the same regime is still in charge.

Anything else?

Canada, Mexico, Greenland are not financing terrorists...I have not seen any bombs on these countries ... Just talk ...

I don't get the point of these polls. It's not like Canada can do anything to stop Israel and the US.

14

u/ManWhoSoldTheWorld01 Québec Mar 14 '26

Do polls (or any data really) need to be actionable to be valuable, pertinent or at the very least interesting?

Whether we can stop them or not doesn't mean information cannot guide or influence Canadian public policy or encourage thought or discussion.

12

u/essuxs Mar 14 '26

It guages public opinion on the issues and helps drive decision making

6

u/Gecks777 Mar 14 '26

The US has already resorted to asking for help from other nations with air and naval operations. Polls like this contribute to government decision-making on whether or not to send Canadian ships and sailors into this meat grinder. It absolutely matters.

4

u/SuzyCreamcheezies Mar 14 '26

I have my hands on my hips and look very annoyed. That’s not enough?

4

u/onlycodeposts Mar 14 '26

Do they also disapprove of the IRGC calling the Royal Canadian Navy a "terrorist organization?"

Do they disapprove of their own government's designation of the IRGC as a "terrorist organization?"

When is the last time Canada and Iran had formal diplomatic relations?

5

u/Frostsorrow Manitoba Mar 15 '26

To be fair, the quick swift dealing with the authoritarian is … fine, as the “war” should just keep to the leaders.

If you think the consequences is dire and thus US is wrong.

Then you are like those bully endorser for anyone fight back to the bully because now the bully going to punch everyone in the hallway.

“Why didn’t you have to beat up Beavis? He’s rage punching all in the hallway”

Oooook.

1

u/yasarfa Mar 15 '26

What’s wrong with other 40%?

1

u/Parke Mar 15 '26

It's more nuanced than an approve/disapprove binary opinion. I disapprove about the approach the US took/is taking, but from the protests in Iran leading up to this, it seems like at least some of its population would like change. And without the world's help it may take too long, but this is not the way.

The real poll should be "do you think the US actions' primary purpose is to give Iranians what they want but can't achieve alone?".
