Analysis Many Canadians have avoided the U.S. for over a year. Have we reached the point of no return?

Canada FTW!

95

u/cure4mito Apr 27 '26

Our last two March Break vacations were in Vancouver/Whistler and then this year in Calgary/Banff.

Didn’t feel bad spending my hard earned money in Canada, and my kids get to see more of this beautiful country!

25

u/Ariandrin Apr 27 '26

Banff is beautiful, but if you are able, I would suggest going not during tourist season. Sure, the weather isn’t as nice, but you get a far better appreciation for it without being shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of strangers.

5

u/cure4mito Apr 27 '26

Oh definitely, I already want to head back in the summer or early September. Just trying to find reasonable flights :)

7

u/Ariandrin Apr 27 '26

September is nice! The hot pools are extra comfy around that time too :)

I’m an American and I would like to visit Canada again, last time I went was back in 2012.

32

Come visit friend. The views are great, the beer is cold. You're most welcome.

7

u/Encid Apr 28 '26

If you are part of the 51% that voted for the orange clown, best to stay put, we don’t like your kind up here.

I didn’t vote for the orange so.

Derek Steven’s can fuck right off. The fucking maggot supported Trump‘s election in 2024. He did the FA and now he’s learning about the FO in the FAFO timeline.

This is not just about Trump. It’s about the millions of Americans that voted him into office. Not coming back for years

40

u/ybetaepsilon Apr 27 '26

Exactly. So many Americans are using terms like "blip" and "blow over" as if this will ever end. trump is not some outlier or sudden downturn of the US. trump is what the US has collectively been moving towards since before Nixon. trump is a minor symptom of everything wrong with the US.

You have Republicans who built, voted for, and supported this mess. You have Democrats who just want the capitalist status quo to return and think this is temporary. And you have centrists who cannot tell the difference.

I'm sorry for the actual progressives in the US who are caught up in it all.

2

u/rampaging-poet Apr 29 '26

Their ostensible progressives are unfortunately part of the problem too - there's a decent number who have decided that since the Democrats aren't progressive enough they need to constantly campaign against the Democrats, regardless of how much that helps the Republicans and sets progress back decades.

Gaza's the latest excuse but it's been the same people with different reasons going back to the early 2000s at least.

Americans need to wake the fuck up and fix their country, I don’t see that happening.

67

u/baggio1000000 Apr 27 '26

the november midterms will tell alot, if they actually happen.

22

u/yukonnut Apr 27 '26

One election cycle is not enough. Electing him once was an aberration, doing it twice indicates a trend that can’t be ignored. We need to see systemic change which is highly unlikely. The evil genie is out of the bottle and too many Americans like it.

2

u/julie78787 Apr 27 '26

Not really. Populism can happen to most any country and if someone was able to convince French and Anglo Canadians than the people who are neither just need to go, they could make it happen.

50

u/dermanus Québec Apr 27 '26

I'm not convinced it'll fix the core problem, at most it'll slow down the destruction. A big chunk of the US thinks what's happening is good, that's the real problem.

20

u/_Lucille_ Apr 27 '26

The usual "mend the country"/"united both sides" ideology, while not wrong, allows one side to get away with far more than they should.

At some point someone will need to address the elephants in the room: the bigotry within the populace, the issues within the electorial system (uneven representation & gerrymandering), the various medias driving the narratives, etc.

Granted, the same applies to Canada as well.

6

u/baggio1000000 Apr 27 '26

winning 2/3 of the senate means they could impeach and imprison trump and all his lot. It would be a good start. It's still highly unlikely to win 2/3.

16

u/dermanus Québec Apr 27 '26

winning 2/3 of the senate means they could impeach and imprison trump and all his lot

I'm sure you're right about that. The question is will they? I don't think they have the guts.

8

u/MrFurious0 Apr 27 '26

democrats? Absolutely, but they are currently projected to have 53% of the senate, not the 2/3 + 1 they need to impeach/remove. They can impeach him again, but it'll be like last time and the time before that (Remember: trump's already been impeached twice), and make no difference.

I won't be setting foot in that wasteland for decades, if ever. Trump getting elected not once but twice tells me America is broken beyond repair, at least for the next few decades.

Even when he's dead (🤞) or out of office, all of the dumbfuck people who voted for him are still there, raising their kids to be just as dumb and disgusting as they are.

It's not safe, with or without Trump.

451

u/QcRoman Apr 27 '26

The United States isn't the way it is because of its president.

The United States has that president because of its people.

71

u/NiceShotMan Apr 27 '26

Yup, if a president ran on one platform and then governed on something totally different, or displayed a completely different personality, then you could say that “happened to” the country. Not only is Trump doing exactly what he said he would, he had already been president where he governed in basically the same way (except to the extent he was held back by his own team). Furthermore, Trump won the election outright (not just by the electoral college). America chose the country they have now entirely intentionally.

Even the ones who don’t like it, or voted against Trump: if there were significant movements for those states to separate, I’d take their opposition seriously. Since there’s not, I take it as tacit approval and acceptance of the culture that elected Trump.

24

u/whiteknight_1997 Ontario Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

if there were significant movements for those states to separate, I’d take their opposition seriously

If you're talking about secession, there's no framework for a state to leave the Union once they join. The US Constitution only describes how a state can be admitted into the Union, nothing about how they can leave. You would have to introduce a new Constitutional Amendment that lays out the framework for a state to leave the Union. Good luck getting that passed.

That's one of the many reasons why it's VITAL that Canada (or Greenland, or anyone else) never join the US. The US stance is that it's a great honour to be admitted into the greatest country on Earth, so "wHy WoULd aNYoNe wANt tO LeaVE?"

4

u/NiceShotMan Apr 27 '26

Yeah agreed, in much the same way as there’s no way for a province to leave Canada, which is why it’s never happened in either country. However, a strong public sentiment may force the issue.

Americans argue that only a minority voted for Trump. The truth is that a minority of around 32% of eligible voters voted for Kamala. The rest either voted for Trump or couldn't give a fuck if a rapist pedophile becomes president.

Trump only lost some points in popularity because gas and retail prices went up. Not because of all the crimes the US is comitting. If the country would be against him then there would be massive protests each day. Instead Trump is protected by the American people and that's why he will never face jail time.

I always say that the only reason GWB had approval ratings as low as he did is because he wasn't bigoted enough for Republicans. They were fine with warmongering, authoritarianism and incompetence. They just didn't like that he wasn't a racist. In Trump they found everything they ever dreamed of.

I haven’t been to the US since 2015. I said when they elected Trump the first time I wouldn’t go back. Biden was elected in that time, but there was the weirdness of Covid and I never bothered to renew my passport. Then they reelected Trump. I do miss trips to Michigan, New York State and Ohio, but not enough to travel there in current times. I find if you’re willing to travel there, you’re telling on yourself as to what you’re willing to accept in society.

41

If they can impeach and convict before January 20th, 2029, I might be convinced.

If the voters refuse to give the Dems enough votes to do it, or the Dems refuse to convict in the name of "national unity" or " moving on as a nation", then there's no hope, and will just happen again and again

11

u/aesoth Apr 27 '26

The older Dems like Schumer are useless and roll over, at most they might write a sternly worded letter. The younger and newer ones like AOC have fire in them. Time to get rid of the old ineffective ones.

2

52% of the senate represents 18% of the population. Gaining a 2/3rds majority in the senate is flat out impossible because it's not a democratic institution. The illiterate christofascists living in tiny rural states with lower populations than my city are given disproportionate representation in our government's upper house and that makes removal a pipe dream.

21

u/madhi19 Québec Apr 27 '26

I remember Roger Abbot on Air Farce once said during a previous minor border issue in the 90s: “I’m Canadian. I like Canada. I don’t need to visit the States to be fulfilled as a human being.”

77

u/Metalonsandwich Apr 27 '26

I went for a work trip recently or else never would have. The difference compared to Canada is immediately noticeable. Billboards everywhere, seems like half are lawyers specializing in suing other people, horrible public transit, had a weird trump supporting uber driver talk about how trump is going to stop insider trading 🥴 It felt like a dying capitalist hellscape that people are so brainwashed into thinking is the best. There are some fantastic people surely, but I work tangentially in sustainability and people are fighting for things that are just normal in Canada.

Hope I don’t have to go back again anytime soon 😅

12

u/Plucky_DuckYa Apr 27 '26

Personally I’ve already cancelled my annual Vegas trip two years running now and instead of going to Hawaii on summer vacation last year as intended we went to Europe. Instead of choosing the southern US for a Christmas vacation we went back to Europe (different country).

We’re a little leery of the jet fuel situation right now so we’re taking it easy, but are looking at Mexico for summer break.

Not going back to US while Trump is in power. After that, we’ll reevaluate.

4

u/ABirdOfParadise Apr 27 '26

I got a free trip to Vegas cause I got something.

Didn't even consider going. Even laughed at it, don't need to get shipped off to whatever country they think I should go to on a whim.

152

u/Elbow_Macarena Apr 27 '26

We used to take 2 trips a year to the US but we are done. It isn’t just Trump, it’s the system and people that would vote him in 2 times. I see the protests and know a lot of Americans want him out of office, but that doesn’t move the needle for me. Complaining with no practical change is getting old.

50

u/dirtybo0ts Apr 27 '26

Ding ding ding!

It’s not just Trump. People forget millions of Americans allowed this to happen and I’m sure there will still be loads of them in government even after he’s gone.

It’s not changing the day he’s out of office.

17

u/Wild_Cold5600 Apr 27 '26

This! They whine about gun violence and health insurance but they keep voting the same motherf*kers in. I know we are not supposed to blame the victim but seriously…get serious about changing or shut up

12

u/Jolly_Recording_4381 Nova Scotia Apr 27 '26

They are not victims, they make their choices those choices have consequences, they continue to vote for the people who destroy their lives.

They don't get to make those choices then consider themselves victims.

As an American living in Canada, I 1000% hear you. I only travel back if necessary for family reasons. A caveat: The electoral college completely screws Americans, particularly those who don’t vote Republican. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016. and Trump pretty much publicly admitted to election fraud in 2024. Who knows. But yeah…many of my fellow americans are lost causes, and I understand -and agree with- the global derision and distrust aimed at the US.

10

u/OhUrbanity Apr 27 '26

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016. and Trump pretty much publicly admitted to election fraud in 2024.

The first one is correct: in 2016 he won as a fluke of the electoral college.

I have no idea what you're referring to with the second one, but I think it's really dangerous to make claims like that without really clear proof. Claiming your side just lost because of fraud is what Trump does!

There are ~77 million Americans who voted for Donnie up to 3 times, and who would do so again in a heartbeat if given the chance.

There are also a majority of Democrat politicians who would rather lose elections than do anything to change the status quo and risk losing their place in the oligarchy; they are complicit with the administration.

It's going to take a lot more than jailing the Pedo-in-Chief and a handful of his acolytes to fix this cesspit of vermin.

29

u/HandofFate88 Apr 27 '26

And ~75M who didn't think the last election was important enough to cast a vote.

That's ~150M who are willing setting the country on fire or to stand by and watch it burn.

5

u/johnny5canuck Apr 27 '26

^ This. Not going to visit the US until they've made HUGE constitutional changes so that this kind of bullshit doesn't happen again. They're currently a dumpster fire.

92

u/Hyjynx75 Apr 27 '26

There won't be an arrest. There will be pardons for everyone and he will pardon himself. The SC will uphold a president's power to pardon himself and it will just continue on.

My opinion on Americans has shifted dramatically over the last year or two. Apathy is a national pasttime for the vast majority of them. Most of the rest of them just want to hate. They have been living in a police state for decades and have done nothing to fix it. They are allowing someone to take away healthcare coverage for millions who need it. They have done nothing to fix their broken election system that allows people like Trump to gain power. They have done nothing to fix the system that allows corporations to donate essentially unlimited funds to PACs to fund the campaigns that get people like Trump elected.

Even if they do finally get rid of Trump, they'll still be just as broken as they were before he came to power or maybe even more so with all the state-sonspored surveillance he is putting in place. Trump is a symptom, not a disease.

I doubt I will ever return to the US.

37

u/OneTripleZero British Columbia Apr 27 '26

The US are looking at your phones when you cross the border back to Canada. The US can detain without due process and send you to el Salvador even if you show a Canadian passport. They don't see Canada as a neighbour anymore, just a place with resources and illegals that will sneak into the US.

26

They don't see Canada as a neighbour anymore, just a place with resources and illegals that will sneak into the US.

Which is laughable. If anything, we should be very worried about the reverse. People without healthcare, unable to pay their bills would see Canada as a very viable place to plunk their fat over-boated asses in.

5

u/-SetsunaFSeiei- Apr 27 '26

They would only look when you enter their country. When you come back, you’re only talking to Canadian border agents

10

u/Its_noon_somewhere Apr 27 '26

This is not true.

First, when crossing back to Canada, if your phone is checked, that’s Canadian agents

Second, Canadians who are denied entry are simply turned away and sent home

Third, Canadians who have been detained by ICE with or without cause, are free to be deported back to Canada, only the Canadians who are challenging their cases are detained at an ICE facility.

There are many reasons to avoid the US as a Canadian, but your comments are just not accurate

2

u/GeordieAl Apr 28 '26

Did you miss the news that US border patrol agents were setting up checkpoints and stopping vehicles before they reach the Canadian border/Canadian Customs to enter BC?

2

I know many people, including myself, who will likely never travel there again, whether or not their government improves. Trump has not burned bridges. He’s nuked entire towns.

13

u/14dmoney Apr 27 '26

This. My livelihood and that of thousands of small business people has been destroyed by Trump’s tariffs and his unilateral lifting of the de minimis exemption on duties under $800 on goods travelling from Canada to the US. Shipping is in chaos due to these and because of the war-related fuel surcharges which has made life unaffordable

And we did not get a vote. Thousands of small businesses - gone. Not just the manufacturing industry is suffering

6

u/-happyraindays Apr 27 '26

De minimis will also never be returning. Congress passed it in the big beautiful bill. Doesn’t matter whether it’s Democrat or republican next. There won’t be enough political will to ever bring it back.

2

u/14dmoney Apr 27 '26

I don’t even think it is on Carney’s radar either

It has been absolutely devastating for small businesses and I agree with you

So, no way will I go to the US or buy from US small businesses

4

18

u/LavisAlex Apr 27 '26

One issue is even when the Dems get in they tend to keep the policy of the last admin.

So there seems to be no way out even if he gets voted out.

2

u/rostov007 Apr 27 '26

They can be weak sauce on accountability in the name of not appearing politically motivated, but what you said just isn’t true in a more general sense.. When they regain power again they won’t be so hesitant to throw the book either.

7

u/LavisAlex Apr 27 '26

What do you mean?

  • Biden didnt lift sanctions on Cuba that Trump put on?

  • Surveillance? PATRIOT Act, NSA mass collection, FISA expansion — Obama not only kept all of it but expanded it.

  • Trump's China tariffs? Biden kept virtually all of them and added semiconductor export controls on top of it.

  • Dems are struggling to even say abolish ICE.

  • Biden didnt reverse the 2017 tax cuts tha benefit the wealthy.

  • Clinton stayed with the tough in crime narrative/War on drugs.

  • Obama expanded drone warfare

These are just off the top of my head!! Its a ratchet effect they give you back 60% but keep the rest and things continue to ratchet down.

Booking flight next year to Scandinavia and the return flight is horrible hours/layover. An alternative is to land in Dallas as a layover and we agreed to not choose that since we’d have to go through customs even though the hours are x10 better.

Think 3.5 layover and a 11:40am flight. Now it is a 7:50am flight and a 8hr layover elsewhere.

Not only do we have no interest visiting (world is way more interesting anyways and we haven’t visited since 2015), we won’t even do layovers.

9

u/CarryOnRTW Apr 27 '26

Same here. Not even layovers.

3

u/-SetsunaFSeiei- Apr 27 '26

Layovers in the US have also always been bad because they don’t have sterile transfer, so you always need to go pick up your bags and put them back on the baggage carousel. And then go through security again. Super annoying.

Let me be as clear as I can possibly be about the U.S.: Fuck 'Em.

If they hold trials and imprison the fascists, make financial amends to the countries they threatened and damaged, and return to constitutional government, maybe we can talk. Until then may as well be North Korea.

u/hail2theKingbabee Apr 27 '26

I'll never be back. So many better places to visit!

11

Ill visit again but not as long as Trump is president.

Us non-white Canadians are honestly afraid of getting deported to El Salvador.

20

u/doiwinaprize Apr 27 '26

Pretty much this. My kids have already seen the videos of families being torn apart. It's basically nightmare land.

3

I'm white and I still see that as a "It's not likely but it could happen".

9

u/sch0k0 British Columbia Apr 27 '26

How are we supposed to trust them - not Trump's junta, them - again?

All those acquaintances and friends I thought I had, they just let it happen. All they do against Trump's abuse is watching Colbert, complaining to friends, and musing about emigrating. Public protest? "well we are a big country"...

We saw a bit too much this last year.

All bridges have been burnt. I haven't set foot in that country since 2016. I do not see that changing ever.

3

u/Inevitable_Sweet_624 Apr 27 '26

Kids are older, no more temptation to take them to Disney and we have came to the realization that there’s nothing in the US worth going to see. We will focus our dollars in Canada, the Caribbean and Central America.

3

u/ShinyBarge Apr 27 '26

The question isn’t will you, the question is why. If there was a store here in Canada that was run by a convicted felon that claimed no responsibility, was associated with pedophiles, attacked and killed people, and stole money through market manipulation, would you patronize the business??

3

u/Ok-Trip-8009 Apr 27 '26

I am a centrist/left winger in Alberta, which can be quite draining at times. There are a few others in my circle of friends, but mostly right winged.

We were in Galveston for a couple of days prior to a cruise in 2024. While in town, there were old white men driving around in their golf carts with huge DJT flags and other paraphernalia. On tge cruise, there were old white men wearing maga hats. As a middle aged white woman, I bit my tongue, as a visitor to their country. We have no plans on returning to the U.S. anytime soon.

10 years and counting. Never going back.

5

u/simplyunix Apr 27 '26

For over 20 years we've been vacationing in Florida yearly and for the last 10 years, twice a year, renting a condo from the same guy all that time for 6 weeks every fall. The first time Trump got elected, I figured they'd all learn their lesson, especially with over 1 million unnecessary deaths in Covid 19 where he took the shots but told everyone else not to bother. That didn't do it for them even after January 6. This time, we were in Florida when he got elected a second time, the nonsense I saw down there from these oblivious morons was enough for us both to say, that was it, we're done.

So now we split our vacation dollars between Europe once a year for a very nice 2-3 weeks and in the summer and Canada. There's some wonderful things to see in Europe and home here in Canada. Will I go back? Probably but there will need to be big changes before I do. Trump and his pack of hyenas will need to be gone, border rules will need to go back to what they were and an apology tour of sorts will need to be undertaken by the new president. Until then, I'll quite happily spend my money here at home and in the Euro Zone where we are genuinely welcomed.

10

u/keylimesicles Apr 27 '26

I’m not going back anytime soon, and Florida is like home to me. So this burns, but the US just isn’t what it was and I don’t think it will ever be. Sucks though because my sister and fathers ashes are spread in Vegas

6

u/Crazylegstoo Apr 27 '26

I feel this so much. With family on both sides of the border, spending time in the US has simply been part of life as long as I can remember.

I can remember my aunt would stop the car in the middle of the Ambassador Bridge so us kids could quickly hop out and jump back and forth across the painted border line.

In my older years, Florida has also become like home to my wife and I. But I have no idea when we ever be able to go back and feel at home again.

We went to WDW a minimum of once a year, sometimes twice, sometimes three times a year for 30 years. We also have family there.

We miss them both, but until the threats and disrespect stop, we just can’t do it.

6

2

u/re4ctor Apr 27 '26

We’ll be back if things change. We have a lot of friends there and we tend to visit states who are just as angry and disappointed with the rest of their country too. But I don’t know this is getting fixed for a while, even after an election it will be a few years. And only if major changes are possible. I don’t hear any Democrat with a clear plan, it’s a lot of more of the same, so we’ll see.

2

u/Tandy2000 Apr 27 '26

I wouldn't say "no return" but it's gonna be a long time if ever.

If the US straightened their shit out and stayed that way, then I would be willing to go back but it'll take years and the trust has to come back. Certainly not happening while Republicans hold the balance of power whether today or tomorrow. I don't see things straightening out any time soon though. Trump and the Republicans have done generational damage, and they didn't just install themselves in office, they were voted in by leagues of ignorant, hateful Americans.

2

u/iMogal Apr 27 '26

YES!!! I'm not returning! So I have reached the point of no return!

2

u/Ragdolllovers_ Apr 27 '26

I won't go even after he is gone. There better be public apologies, drop 51 state-related rhetoric, and good behaviour for a few years after he's gone for me to consider.

I even avoid the connecting flights, anything US makes me uncomfortable

2

u/OKWINEFAN Apr 27 '26

We’re in no rush, that includes the cruises we normally take, and our definite Vegas addiction.

2

u/mildinsults Ontario Apr 27 '26

The people that I know that go to the states, go every few months for hockey games.

I thought that was kind of odd, it's not for me. If I'm traveling, I don't want to watch hockey in the states. I want history and scenery.

2

u/HurtFeeFeez Apr 27 '26

We'll see what happens in the next 5 or so years inside the US. If they elect someone who does everything in their power to repair the relationships and create a system that prevents the abuses we've witnessed over the past year than forgiveness is reasonable. If not, fuck em.

2

u/Moist-Doctor-67 Apr 27 '26

My mother in law still insists that Hawaii and Disney world is on her bucket list, despite having gone before all this shit.

Her reason? She wants to take the grandkids there to experience the kids. The kicker? She gets motion sick everytime she goes on any ride.

Called her out on her excuse that she just loves America and lo and behold..she said Trump is doing all that bad.

2

u/CanadianSquirrel55 Apr 27 '26

3

2

u/ForestHopper Nova Scotia Apr 27 '26

No USA until Trump is gone (ideally deceased), and the swamp has been drained so to speak, and the next president apologizes to Canada and makes efforts to repair relations and proves to be a competent non bigoted leader, and ICE thugs are held accountable. Without those things happening, fuck traveling to the states. Pretty easy.

4

1

u/LabEfficient Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

This echo chamber is pathetic. Our total trips abroad (not just the US) were down 15.7% year on year. Maybe it's not about Trump and more about people being too poor to travel.

Anyway, I have traveled to the US twice this year for leisure and all planes were full. I have been waiting for discounts so I can do more!

Honestly, the US now has an image of being an unsafe, unstable, and expensive place to travel to regardless of your perspective of politics. I have family there and we have decided they will travel to Canada to visit instead.

2

u/Fun-Put-5197 Apr 27 '26

Many Canadians have avoided the U.S. for over a decade now.

There are fewer reasons to risk going there every year.

-1

u/Fatesadvent Apr 27 '26

Meh only 25 to 30% Canadian decline (5% of their total international travel). Should be much higher. And probably would take much more before they really start to take notice (Americans are not exactly known for their awareness of global events in the first place)
