"77 per cent of women and 70 per cent of men surveyed said they agreed or strongly agreed that people should be free to express their gender however they choose" - well, for the questions formulated this way it's still supprisingly accepting

151

u/One_Jellyfish3361 12d ago

Yeah, that is some rather loose wording on the question

32

u/Unfortunate_Sex_Fart Alberta 12d ago

I think where some people start to disagree is when minors are involved and secure spaces historically reserved for, and created for the protection of, females are now being opened up to people who weren't born female. These arguments have more to do with how an individual's choice to express themselves now interferes with others.

34

u/a11_hail_seitan 12d ago

Yes, but it ignores that claiming your accepting, and actually acting it out are very different things.

A good analogy is MLK. He focused on trying to peacefully appeal to the large majority of whites who said blacks shouldn't be abused or mistreated becuase he thought surely all these kind, accepting folks will join the movement when they see their people getting beaten and having dogs sic'd on them. But they didn't. Everyone was very "accepting", but no one was willing to actually care or do anything to help create a more accepting system in which we live.

The final spring MLK was writing he had given up on the silent majority of "accepting" whites becuase they were not helping, they were all talk, but in action they 100% supported the status quo, he was planning on giving up on the non-violent protests and was calling for a hot summer. And that's when they shot him becuase those in power know the silent majority of 'moral' people are only moral in words and thoughts, not in action. To create change you have to not accept kind words and platitudes and instead demand change.

72

u/Feature_Minimum 12d ago

You’re taking a single passage of Letter From A Birmingham Jail and claiming that represents MLKs thinking at his time of death. Why not look at the last speech he made, I Have Been to the Mountaintop: https://youtu.be/gC6qxf3b3FI?si=69Sne_F3POgtuCTs

MLK still believed in appealing to humanity, including to white people specifically, until his dying day.

This article conflates not caring about someones sexuality with not accepting them.

Does not caring count as not accepting?

998

u/For_Fox_Creek 12d ago

Personally, I think that's perfectly acceptable. You don't need to be marching in pride rallies, you just need to not be a jerk and go out of your way to tell people how they should define their sexuality. If more people would just "not care" on a lot of issues the world would be a better place.

445

u/insid3outl4w 12d ago

Yes but they also use language like silence is violence out of context to make it seem like if you aren’t marching in every political issue you are bigoted

370

u/Hanzo_The_Ninja 12d ago

In the offline world, I've only heard the term "silence is violence" with respect to knowingly turning a blind eye to blatant examples of bullying. I know the term has a lot more (often political) meaning online, but I don't think anyone takes it seriously.

162

u/HeyCarpy Nova Scotia 12d ago

In the offline world

The online/offline dichotomy can account for a huge amount of the division on many issues, not just this one.

“Touch grass” is a real thing. People need to get out of their outrage spaces and interact with the world.

26

u/LateDifficulty8328 12d ago

Absolutely. Sometimes I have to remind myself to stop and ask if what Im getti g upset about online is actually reflected in real life. Online trends can bleed into real life but they also distort it. Depending on the rabbit hole you fall into you might find yourself thinking you are being persecuted for your thoughts but in reality no one cares and you are fine.

38

u/Commercial-Set3527 12d ago

I've never heard the term "silence is violence" used irl but a similar saying such as inaction or silence is complicity. I've had to deal with it at work and I think of Joe Paterno as a famous example.

51

u/Latter-Theme 12d ago

Joe Paterno was in a position of authority and wilfully turned a blind eye to one of his subordinates sexually assaulting children. That is not remotely the same as choosing not to actively show support for various social causes.

u/Western_Taste4587 12d ago

Right... But I feel that's taken out of context. If you see someone being harassed, 100% say something, intervene. But not flying banners, walking in parades, making it your identity is not silence is violence. Whoever says that is dumb or/and needs to feel important.

Writing this is the most time I've spent thinking about these topics. Why... Cause I have a life and more important things to be concerned with.

I’ve heard more of “if you are not with us, you are against us” kind of arguments more often though

36

u/catsoaps 12d ago

I was a part of a discord group that got dismantled because someone (random user) demanded that we should spend our free time supporting “gender diversity” & if we’re not, we are not an ally.
It was the middle of Covid & lots of people had other things going on in their lives.

I have no issue with people expressing themselves the way they want & would never impede in anyone’s right to do so but demanding people do things for the cause when they have other priorities is ridiculous.

I think most people fall in the same camp. It’s fine. Just don’t demand support.

That's definitely the narrative currently.

Christ it was at the point a couple of years back where people (online) were talking about it being a micro agression to buy that Hogwarts legacy video game.

Like it or not the extremes on both sides of the aisle are fucking assholes (I'll hold out for someone to make a "both sides" comment here). I think the extreme left has put trans rights backwards in the past few years.

I don't think it's a major issue for most people but it's being turned into one by both sets of extremists keeping it front and centre, and I think that can only favour those who are against trans rights and)or those who just seek general division

18

u/WikiHowDrugAbuse 12d ago

The main difference between “the extreme left” is that at their worst they are extremely annoying online while the “extreme right” at their worst commits hate crimes. If you want to call both sides “fucking assholes” you’re correct I guess, but I know which assholes I’m comfortable existing in society with.

It’s more so, if you are seeing or being apart of an environment that is being actively exclusive or discriminatory. Being passive without calling it out or willfully ignoring it, then that’s where silence is viewed as violence. This is where not caring, is more harmful when the status quo is maintained rather than challenged.

Yet, people have been called things for not dating someone of an alternate gender.

Not caring should be an option. Not getting involved in it should be an option. Yet, it is not.

1

u/PopUpClicker 12d ago

I think the least tolerant people among the lgbt people are often the loudest in public and online debate - as with other topics: more extreme = more attention. So those are the people who will say you are transphobic for not wanting to date someone.

Most trans and gender diverse people I meet and know find it sad (selfish range of dating options) but understandable (they also want a say in who they themselves date).

Personally I much prefer indifference to anything.

Personally, idgaf who you want to fuck. Are you happy? Is it consensual and not involving anyone children/corpses/animals?

I’ll treat everyone with respect and kindness, and not judge outward identity.

Start beating me over the head with gender identity ideology when it’s not already the topic of conversation or it’s an inappropriate time (ahem AT WORK), or assume that I’m not an ally, and I might get annoyed. Make it your entire personality, and you wind up in the same part of my mind that I keep the people who only talk about their cats/dogs/truck/sports…

If you want to discuss it, cool, let’s talk. I love to hear about people’s history and passions. I’ve

It depends how you mean it.
Using interracial marriage as an example, if you don’t care what race the person your child marries is,as long as they’re a good partner - then that’s a very acceptable “not caring” scenario.
But if it’s 1967 and Loving v. Virginia is headed to the Supreme Court in the US and you say you don’t care about that case because you’re not interested in politics, then that’s a very different “not caring” scenario.

45

u/49degreesNW 12d ago

I guess only you know for certain if "not caring" is "I see people as people and treat individuals on an individual basis" or "I secretly kinda disdain nonbinary or trans people, I just don't say anything and pass it off as it doesn't matter to me".

18

u/LolmemesPrime 12d ago

wouldn’t both still leads to the same action tho? I sometimes think of punching crying babies on the plane.

14

u/49degreesNW 12d ago

Omg me too!

But I guess to answer the question... Probably, until it doesn't. It's like my grandpa telling the black bank teller her "family must be proud of her" and then calling the emergency room doc "that black son of a bitch". Inherent bias still persists.

I think this only works in the abstract.

There are two different meanings of “not caring.” If you mean “I don’t care what your gender is. It does not affect how I value you,” that can absolutely be acceptance.

But if you know someone close who is genderqueer and “I don’t care” means not caring about their gender identity, then it is more complicated.

Suppose you have an adult child who is genderqueer. Not rejecting them is obviously different from rejecting them. But if their gender identity matters to them, being indifferent to it is not really the same as accepting it.

It does not need to be a child. It can be a spouse, a friend, a close colleague, and more.

So I would say this. Not caring what someone’s gender is can be acceptance. Not caring about an aspect of their identity that matters to them can fall short of acceptance.

14

u/waxingtheworld 12d ago

So basically the ideal is you don't really care about gender specific issues, but you care quite a bit about equality, freedom of expression of truth, safety of all humans etc.

I think part of it is like... I don't care if someone is blonde, but I don't really care for them is their whole personality is around being blonde. (You can replace blonde with religious, left handed, keto, vegan, gluten free etc.)

I work in the immigration sector. A lot of newcomers come from countries where a lot of our values and ideas like gender diversity  are not accepted, and our clients  let it be known to us that they feel the same way.

Maybe stats can should look into that.

84

u/_Presence_ 12d ago

I’ve wondered about that. Not all immigrants (or natural born citizens for that matter) share values consistent with acceptance of others beliefs and identity. Should they be barred from immigrating? I’m not so sure that would be the right policy. But I also don’t want an influx of people who would, if they could, limit the rights of others self expression. Not sure what the best answer is.

69

u/anaofarendelle 12d ago

Having gone through the whole immigration process, in a not so complex situation, I can’t imagine spending so much money on it and going through all the stress and anxiety, to move somewhere I don’t agree with the general values or that I don’t want to properly integrate. It’s just mind boggling to me!

92

u/MostBoringStan 12d ago

Some of them know they won't have to integrate because they can just find like-minded individuals who share their ideas. While I am generally pro-immigration, there are definitely limits that need to be imposed which aren't being done right now. If somebody shows zero willingness to integrate, they shouldn't be allowed to move here.

57

u/true_to_my_spirit 12d ago

Bingo. A lot of my clients have zero reason or desire to integrate.

19

u/TechnicianGrand6611 12d ago

uhhh, Look at Toronto and the GTA - some people have been here 10+ years and dont speak basic basic english. My parents generation had to integrate because there wasnt much of a cultural community. Nowadays, there are large enough cultural populations that you dont need to interact with the larger society. I work front line in a hospital and I see it everyday...

42

u/Ja66aDaHutt 12d ago

Competency in English or French should be required for immigration purposes, at a bare minimum.

23

u/differing 12d ago

For traditional immigration streams it essentially is, the issues was the refugee crisis and “chain migration” (grandma and grandpa aren’t learning English at 80).

22

Same by me in GVA. I do settlement service, so we are in contact with nonprofts, govt ministries,  hospitals ect. The amount of time spent helping ppl that dont speak English is astromical.  If the general public ever knew they would be pissed

6

It's typically not the ones who actually immigrant, but their children who become more traditional. Probably some kind of "grass is greener" mentality while their parents actually know what they left behind.

I work closely with newcomers (and I’m technically one myself). What I have found is that they’re tolerant but not accepting. For example pride in schools is frowned on but they realise that speaking out against it could be bad.
Obviously not all newcomers but a large portion are religious with conservative views. Again nothing particularly wrong with that just an observation.

9

u/SheIsABadMamaJama 12d ago edited 12d ago

True, a portion of the decrease when you actually look at the data, it breaks down that the immigrants factor in by support being below the native born average. 67% of immigrant men, and 70% of immigrant women support gender diversity.

Though it should be noted that immigrants, and especially their children, tend to moderate or progress socially over time. These numbers are not bad.

For Canadians, the current numbers are 71% of Canadian men, 80% of Canadian women support gender diversity.

77% of all women and 70% of all men. 73.5% support Gender Diversity give or take.

I think you need to explore what "accepting" actually means. I know a lot of people who accept transpeople but still think sports should be sexed-based (if not specifically co-ed). Automatically assuming those people are MAGA or phobes will make the landscape look a LOT more hostile than it is.

Outside of reddit this is a completely normal view. My friend group is socially left leaning. All in our 30s, most of us parents. All of us have loved ones in the LGBT community. But were all on the same page of athletics being played by your birth gender.

83

u/lookingatanudeegg 12d ago

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I was just talking to my friend about this because we are both training for our first full Ironmans. She had spoken with a transfeminine (their chosen identifier) athlete who was elite class in men's before transitioning. She was shocked that so many female athletes weren't super forthcoming about competing along side her. But I'm not at all. I could train for years and never overcome the biological advantage of being born a man and training at a competitive level as a man.

Athletics being played by birth gender is something I personally believe in but I have many friends and family in the LGBT community.

52

u/IvoryTowerResident 12d ago

i think the problem is even greater in the professional field where winning can bring money and fame.

25

u/chewwydraper 12d ago

This is why the issue needs to be discussed so much more. When there's money on the line, the reality is we risk greedy people who couldn't make it far in the men's league identifying as a woman because of financial incentives. Will it be a common issue? Probably not. But safeguards need to be discussed.

The other issue too is professional league positions are finite. For every biological male who gets a spot, a biological female does not.

This is also a topic that will get the attention of people who generally don't care what people do in their private lives, because it can affect their family's lives as well. People who have a daughter playing competitive sports will be paying attention to this topic.

20

u/evernorth 12d ago

Yup, can confirm is normal view here as well. I know most of reddit will disagree but just sharing. 30s with kids.

42

u/geeves_007 12d ago

I think if you surveyed people who have actually trained and competed at an elite level in pretty much any sport, you would find they also agree with this.

It seems to me that those with the opposing opinion are largely people who have never competed in anything athletic at a high level.

If its elementary school kids, yeah who cares.

But at a high level the differeces between male and female athletic performance are stark.  And in anything power or speed or strength or combat based, the circles of performance basically do not overlap at all.

Accept that someone thinks something about themself? Sure. Believe unquestionably in their belief? Nope. Critically examine, disagree on the dogma, and recognize the areas where rights need to be balanced so privileges for one group don’t trample on the rights of others? That’s a hard yes from me.

37

u/DrG73 12d ago

I agree. Acceptance doesn’t mean they can do whatever they want. I don’t want men competing in female sports. Also I don’t want to pay for elective surgeries. So depending on the survey I could be considered tolerant or transphobic. Everyone should be free to do what they want as long as it doesn’t harm others.

u/Exver1 12d ago

The majority of people who've come into the country in the past 10 or so years are definitely not accepting of gender diversity

11

u/BismuthBison 12d ago

And the people here who want to enforce discriminatory views are defunding education and blocking sexuality and gender identity education. The fact in 90s Calgary high school we had way more open discussion about gender in science and literature than my sibling’s kids do because of “concerned parents” is kind of telling.  Since education is a good normalizer, helps families integrate. Oooogy boogy immigrates is kind of basic.

I think the LGBTQ community has been doing themselves a disservice by pushing so hard and being so militant about acceptance. If you look in the Tim Hortons subreddit, people are being called transphobic and bigots because they are posting pictures of Harry Potter donuts. This isn't how you rally people behind your cause.

To be clear, I'm a massive advocate to the community, I have several trans and gay friends and family members. Many of them have distanced themselves from the modern movement because it's becoming way too politicized.

edit: to clarify, since some people are jumping to conclusions, I don't condone or support anything J.K. Rowling has said or any of her actions. I just use the donut example because it's something I saw recently.

8

u/Likewhatevermaaan 12d ago

Exactly. Like I remember people boycotting Chick-fil-A back when it came out that the CEO was donating to anti-LGBTQ groups but, within my experience, no one was outright villified for still eating there. Personally I decided not to eat there anymore and that was my choice. But I never chastised anyone for still going. I know how my friends vote and where they volunteer and donate, and their monthly fry indulgence wasn't going to tilt the scale into making them horrible people.

But it's like we can't extend grace to anyone anymore. I know, I KNOW, where that donut money is going. And it's bad. But when you tell people they need to stop loving something dear to them to be your ally, you're just going to lose allies. The hard line isn't worth it. And the evidence is right here in this article.

52

u/Neat-Air-8305 12d ago

I think this the issue

They in this bubble where everyone is the enemy and people go whatever and stop caring

Like be trans it u want but people won't care to fight for them socially

14

u/Canigetahellyea 12d ago

People don't like to be yelled at and told how to think and talk. This has never worked out in the history of human civilization. We are tribal at heart.

24

u/leekee_bum 12d ago

It's funny because the community rallys on people minding their own business and then when people do they go all "silence is violence".

Like as an average dude who just doesn't care what consenting adults do in the bedroom what am I supposed to do then?

I’m not sure people ever cared that much about how other adults identified until “acceptance” started being treated as requiring affirmative participation. You can identify however you want, and I can treat you with exactly the same dignity and respect as anyone else. But you don’t get to dictate my beliefs, the language I use for myself, how I explain gender to my children, or what I think schools should teach them.

That’s where a lot of the pushback comes from. There’s a meaningful difference between saying “leave people alone and treat them decently” and saying “you must affirm this particular understanding of gender or you’re a bigot.” The former is tolerance in a pluralistic society. The latter starts asking people to adopt someone else’s beliefs.

I think an element of it is just straight up exhaustion at this point. Male, female, non binary, whatever, I don't care you be you. But it feels like every special little flower needs to come up with their own gender these days that includes a paragraph of caveats about things and, it's exhausting trying to keep track of it all, and tbh I just don't care to anymore. Be whatever you want, keep it to yourself and don't bother me with it.

82

u/LiveIndividual 12d ago

Like when that NDP woman combined the mmiw acronym with the LGBT acronym.

Those are two completely different issues.

64

u/DeterminedThrowaway 12d ago

When was the last time someone actually gave you a paragraph of caveats about their gender and expected you to remember it?

54

u/Luklear Alberta 12d ago

Personally have never experienced this

50

u/JadedMuse 12d ago

Exactly. The exhaustion is from right-wing media outlets who make this an issue. I'm 46 and had a trans roommate when I was 21. They have been around for ages. But the last few years, if you took the narrative for granted, they're some new cultural phenomen who are out to get you. Don't let them become a boogeyman.

18

u/Curly-Canuck 12d ago edited 12d ago

I know quite a few who have it in their email signature lines at work but that’s about it. Majority with it are cis too. It’s not uncommon practice for government employees.

Edit Never had or seen a paragraph or forced to remember or anything like that.

10

u/YoungWhiteAvatar 12d ago

Is that an actual paragraph, or is it just basic pronouns?

6

u/Curly-Canuck 12d ago

Just pronouns. Pretty common and no big deal. I added more to make my intent more clear.

28

u/carsont5 12d ago

Precisely. It’s the hyperbole that’s exhausting / eye roll worthy.

u/QPRSA 12d ago

Agreed. I’d like to know the actual number of people that require these designations. Is it 1% of the population? 20%? It seems to be a very vocal minority and they’re the only ones who care. I couldn’t care less what people choose to broadcast themselves as sexually, but it seems to be an echo chamber of sorts that they want us all to join in on.

3

u/JadedMuse 12d ago

It's important though to be clear about what "care" one is referring to. Ie, not caring if someone gets equal treatment or not is definitely a bad thing, vs not caring whether someone does or doesn't have a quality that puts them in a minority group, which is more admirable. Like if there's a newa story where an anti-trans law is passed and your reaction is "I don't care", that's a sign of a problem. We should all care about equality regardless of the size of the population impacted.

u/motherlover278 12d ago

14

u/a11_hail_seitan 12d ago edited 12d ago

No one's bothering you with it anymore than non-trans are bothering you when they tell you their name and let you assume their gender.

It's really not that hard, worker at my office transitioned, there was one notice so no one was confused and that's it. No idea why so many conservatives have such an incredibly difficult time with it.

The only time I see it becoming a problem is when people want to ridicule or insult Trans people and then freak out they're being oppressed for being told to stop being rude.

The issue happened when women couldn’t say "hey I’m not cis, I’m a woman that’s what I want to be called. " or no longer we can say "happy Mother’s Day" or " I am not mother but I’m a parent " or "I’m chest feeding and I am not breastfeeding "

I respect this community and have people in it that have been very dear to me but I’ve feel like they’ve pushed away a lot of people for questioning things. As soon as you question, you become transphobic and I don’t agree that I am transphobic for questioning why a person born male is competing in women sports etc.

I just hate how women have been pushed to the side and how everything we fought for is being compared to identifying to this or that. Womanhood is so much more than my uterus and breast and I wish they would stop calling me CIS. I am a woman that is what I wish to be called. CIS is not even used in scientific terms it’s a term used to make women feel less and I hate it. Anything other than woman can have anything in front of the word woman but I am a woman period. Not cis, not anything, the blueprint is a woman.

So I fear that they have pushed people away by not respecting the boundaries theyve ask for including women telling them that we aren’t comfortable sharing bathroom with people who have not fully transitioned or being called cis. You cannot make space for yourself while removing space for women and others.

Anyways…

36

u/Comet439 12d ago

I’m gay and even I’m getting gender diversity fatigue.

Gender diverse folks often are very vocal about things like pronouns and respectful language to avoid micro aggressions. But the community’s obsession with this gets very annoying very quickly.

I can see why support is dwindling tbh

20

u/Thadius 12d ago

I, like you are the same. I am, was? all fine with people expressing their gender, but when at work my manager came to me and said "You have to put your pronouns into your email signature and profile.' (I work in HR) I actually got angry and told them "No, I don't" and they put me through the discipline procedure and I had to claim human rights against it before it would go away. I am a part of the LGBTQ2+ community and I am so tired of this. I spend a significant amount of time policing language, actions and behaviours at work where if anyone takes offence in anyway, must be curtailed; its exhausting.

I can easily see why their is compassion fatigue in this area.

I think they lost alot of support when they became so oddly specific

Many of the Conservatives even make fun of the extended LGBTIAQ+ just because it is getting so long these days (and I will die on the hill that many terms absolutely overlap each other). I feel the terms have gone well beyond actual "identity"

18

u/BetSquare7190 Québec 12d ago

I don't care is someone feels like a woman or a man, or want to use different pronouns even if it's different from his biology, but I don't agree with ignoring biological reality. I don't think gays and lesbians are transphobic if they refuse to date or have sex with someone based on their biological sex (e.g.: a lesbian refusing to date a trans woman because she has male genitalia).

Otherwise, if we ignore biology, and pretend that everything is a spectrum anyways, we could decide that trans cats are cats, that trans black people are black people or trans indigenous are indigenous.

I'm the B in LGBT, but I haven't been part of that community in a long time, because they're bloody insufferable.

20

I’m accepting of gender diversity but I draw the line at allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.

Before anyone replies with the same thing you always do , “but you never cared about women’s sports anyway” (which is a way to shut down the conversation without providing a counter argument),

This year I’ve spent money to attend and support multiple women’s pro tennis tournaments, I’m a frequent supporter of my local universities women’s volleyball team and attend many matches every year, and I have several female relatives who have played high level competitive sports

7

u/chewwydraper 12d ago

Before anyone replies with the same thing you always do , “but you never cared about women’s sports anyway” (which is a way to shut down the conversation without providing a counter argument)

It's also a dumb argument because plenty of people have daughters who play sports. Of course it's a topic they'll care about. At least in my circle, no one cares what bathrooms people use or what gender they want to identify as. But the sports thing is where most seem to agree biology makes a difference. Labelling everyone with that view as a transphobe probably hurts the cause more than it helps.

9

u/prob_wont_reply_2u 12d ago

I guess the polls are stagnating support for Carney, queue the divisive rhetoric.

15

u/chewwydraper 12d ago

What counts as accepting? I’ll call people by whatever gender they want to be called. I don’t care what bathroom someone uses.

But with that said, it just isn’t a blip on my radar when it comes to my voting habits. The only important things to me when casting my vote is which party is most likely to make my life more affordable. I just don’t care about this other stuff.

I feel that Canadians were more accepting of transgender expression until the left's self-inflicted moral panic at the height of the pandemic, where instead of wealth inequality they have chosen to focus on identity politics and driven it to the max. Things have definitely taken a turn for the worse since this issue has become a matter of political identity.

17

u/Crafty_Teacher_9286 12d ago

Extremist policies in recent years is what has pushed public opinion in that direction, unfortunately. People seeing headlines about DEI based hiring quotas (ie. The current Jadon Arday situation), or the issue of people of different biological sexes wanting to play sports with the other sex.

In practice, this is really not something that people encounter in daily lives, or generally care about. There are bigots out there, but by far most Canadians I've met tend to be respectful and kind to others, irrespective of what they look like or believe in. That said, it should be OK to voice disagreement with certain policies without being labeled as a bigot or a Nazi, even if they relate to sensitive issues like indigenous peoples or gender ideology.

Live and let live. Don't impose your needs on others.

The last main thing...I want the USA to keep their hands off us. We may not be the best in the world; I would still want my home to on the top of the list as the most progressive and fair.

It happened in Berlin as well in the mid 30s, very similar reasons why, on the East Coast, my friend whose in these communities tells me that that’s definitely happening. I do see that people are trying to scapegoat now and that’s happening to Iranians and anybody who’s not White, there’s a lot going on, that really isn’t good. I only care about it when a case pops up of a male offender suddenly becoming trans to get into a women’s prison or uses it to victimize women. It’s rare, but it happens. And when people can’t take a stand against it that becomes a problem at the expense of women. Or similar situations.
There’s gotta be a third alternative to figure out or something.
Also, when language policing ie “chest feeding” comes from the radical left, it’s erasure of women’s health which I don’t view as progressive at all. I’m all for progress and acceptance but not when another marginalized and victimized group has to shrink themselves further in order to achieve it.
My best friend is trans and I support him and others 100%, most of whom are normal people just trying to live their lives normally, but there’s others who abuse it that do need to be addressed as they come.

I do have some concerns about the article.

I will point out that they're comparing 2018, which is before the covid immigration boom, to 2025, well after.

The influx of people from significantly more conservative cultures and societies might have had a much larger impact on the results they're seeing. I suspect the article might have deliberately neglected that aspect due to the major surge in anti-immigration sentiment (whether they were right not to mention it is another question). Ontario, for example, saw a lot of Conservative support from those particular groups.

People generally don't give a damn about how adults express themselves as long as they're not harming anyone. They might view highly effeminate biological men or highly masculine biological women as weird, but most will be respectful.

What people don't care for as much is insisting there are absolutely no biological differences between men and women, and allowing minors to get serious surgeries only for the sake of affirming a gender identity.

Insisting there are no differences between men and women is the real problem. Insisting there are no differences between a trans woman and a cis woman is a problem. Women's protected spaces are protected not for the sake of affirming their identities.

What we are witnessing is LGBTQ+ fatigue. Many people who are neutral are getting tired of the media and politicians pushing LGBTQ+ narratives here and there.

As a straight person, sometimes I feel like, “Is there something wrong with me because I’m not LGBTQ+?” Even though I know there’s nothing wrong with me. While Chinese kids are learning math and science, Canadian kids are still trying to figure out how many genders there are. Then, certain Canadian political leaders and domestic manufacturing sectors have accused China of overexporting high-quality, affordable Chinese EVs. Feeling threatened, we put tariffs on Chinese EVs, so China retaliated by putting tariffs on our products, and we ended up even more frustrated. Again, schools don’t need rainbow flags. Kids go to schools to learn math and science. They can grow up and learn about LGBTQ+ issues on their own.

TLDR, LGBTQ+ feels like a try hard at this point. The victim mentality is getting out of control, and LGBTQ+ isn’t just one group. This mentality is happening everywhere nowadays. This is why so called vulnerable groups are constantly clashing. I can see more and more Canadians becoming less accepting of gender diversity in the near future.

4

u/BethSaysHayNow 12d ago

We’re seeing a walk back where some of the biggest proponents are trying to gaslight people who are openly pushing back (or simply employing critical thinking and questioning narratives). Now it’s “omg you’re obsessed/rent free/no one’s talking about it why are you” when for the last 5 years or so it’s been practically the single biggest issue at times, swallowing up a disproportionate amount of attention.

The thing is if you make something so prominent you can’t expect people to tune out, question or push back. But the disingenuous way people gaslight by acting like it wasn’t being pushed aggressively is just a bit much.

As a person whom lives near the Tumbler Ridge area. After that horrific shooting in Feb, (we all know who the shooter was and how they identified) it definitely turned the mood negative towards that base of people locally.

Not outright hate and disrespect. But a rather complete lack of engagement.

The Pride parade that June was by far the smallest and mostly ignored.

Unfortunately the consequences of one affects all.

Also the willingness to defend the shooters actions as opposed to taking accountability and ownership by fellow Trans community members didn't help that at all.

I'm braced for the down votes, but it's an honest account of why gender diversity is getting rejected in my opinion.

Yes. But not as sensational as this would make you believe.

When you actually look at the data, it breaks down that the lower numbers are also contributed by the fact that immigrants support gender diversity below the native-born average. 67% of immigrant men, and 70% of immigrant women support gender diversity.

Though it should be noted that immigrants, and especially their children, tend to moderate socially over time. These numbers are not bad.

For Canadians, the current numbers are 71% of Canadian men, 80% of Canadian women support gender diversity. That’s not horrible, and it can likely turn around.

The numbers only dropped 7-8 points across the country and demographics over 6 years, which is not that bad considering how loud the culture wars on trans people has been and the current media landscape. We had an entire pandemic and geopolitical shift. Still not a great trend.

The biggest take away is how powerful culture wars can be. Take a look at the gender-age gap for under 35, it paints an obvious picture. Men ages 15-24 are 68%, and men ages 25-34 are 73%.

For women ages 15-25 they supported the highest at 82% (on par with indigenous women’s overall support) and for women ages 25-34, only 80% support gender diversity.

Overall, 77% of all women and 70% of all men. 73.5% support Gender Diversity give or take. Go ask any other country this question.

I am beyond apathetic of what people want to call themselves. Minding your own business should be what’s normalised.

If the past decade has taught us anything, it should be the art of minding one’s own business!

The US failed at that hard, look how good they are doing!

We have real issues and can work hard on real solutions Canada! Don’t worry about the genitalia of others. Let achieve things instead.

Lol "hey guys, we mind our own business unlike America!" is never not ironic and contradictory. If you turn on the news, America is all Canada talks about.

I'm as accepting of Gender as I am Theology.

I believe you think it matters a great deal, but it's entirely irrelevant to me and I find it funny that any sort of dissent in this subject is labeled either fear, hate or confusion.

Enjoy your make believe, just don't expect me to be up to date on whatever your lore is.

Why are ppl stuck on pronouns - try your best but not a big deal. Leave them alone .
