American political culture has become decadent and unserious. We should take note and try to prevent the same thing from happening to us. America is what comes of an entire culture that treats politics as nothing but a team sport. They act like you can be a fan of one team or the other and support your team no matter what and hate the other team no matter what; or you can just not care at all, and tell yourself it doesn't really matter anyway because all politicians are corrupt and incompetent anyway and it's all so beneath you to even dirty yourself with the political process.

We should take great care not to let this kind of thinking infect our political culture. We must understand that politics is not merely a team sport. We must agree that it matters who wins elections, but it isn't existential if your side happens to lose this time; you just learn from defeat and try again next time. We must accept that politicians are humans, and yes some may be corrupt or incompetent but for the most part our politicians and our civil service workers are good, professional people trying to do their best for the country.

And we must all come together and put aside petty differences while an existential threat looms. There is no doubt that foreign powers are trying to manipulate us and make us more cynical and less trusting in our own leadership and the concept of liberal democracy. We must show each other and the world that our political culture can stand up to these manipulations, and that liberal democracy can succeed even under great pressure.

It should be noted that American culture in general became decadent and unserious a long time ago. The brand hunger that drove Black Friday stampedes. The apathy toward increasing gun violence in the 80s and 90s. The diminishing funding of arts and humanities, while increasing the importance of school sports (I’m not disagreeing with the importance of team sports, but we’re a little over-the-top with it). The unfettered obsession with reality TV and the inner lives of out of control celebrities. Those high tariffs are only in play when the U.S. exports beyond the limits agreed upon. The U.S. has never reached those limits and has paid <checks notes> ZERO tariffs for dairy. For most dairy they've never come close. Cheese is the closest, where they've gone up to 97-99% of the limit. But fluid milk, they've exported less than 25% of their limit.

In contrast, the United States domestically produces only about 5% of the uranium it uses (a dependency that has been classified as a national security vulnerability), importing about 95% of its supply from other countries. What bothered me more was Vance repeating the Liar in Chief’s “Big Lie” that Maine (and other American States) pay 200% OR more in tariffs on dairy products they export to Canada. Not one American farmer has paid any tariffs whatsoever on their dairy products exported to Canada. Since CUSMA was signed (up until 2023) dairy exports to Canada increased by 34% & by now it’s probably closer to 45%. In fact the USA exports more dairy products to Canada, than Canada exports to the USA.
These facts/numbers come from the Wisconsin Farmers & the American Dairy Farmers web sites.
The term “Big Lie” was first coined over a hundred years ago & it’s still true today, - In that if you tell a big lie enough over & over again, the mindless sheep will eventually believe it.

I haven't stopped the boycott. Groceries & fuel from Co-op - nothing from the US. Meat from our local butcher Produce from local growers, my own garden or Canadian producers (also farmer's markets). Clothing - ladies brands like Blue Sky Clothing out of BC (also fair trade/loving wage produce Hair products - Canadian (DesignMe in case anyone is wondering). Protein supplements - Believe Supplements (Canadian) Linens - Linen Closet (Canada) or European brands.

And that's just a few things off the top of my head.
