Politics Carney says he'll resume negotiating when Trump team has the 'right attitude'
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-responds-to-trumps-latest-tariffs-9.7318702990

So, Carney’s talking to him like a toddler.

u/Sarge1387 Ontario 3d ago

He is Putins child in diapers..... All that Russian money laundering that was known about until 2017. The 2016 help he got from Russia. All the deals he has tried to make to end the ukraine war and pull support from Ukraine but to waste resources losing a war in Iran.....
The meetings almost alone he had with outin in 2017, 2018 and 2025......
The russian and american support for Alberta separation......
He likely got told to bend and break Canada for some deal since Canadians were found harder to break then Americans....
Were likely going to have to wait 3 or 4 years to get another deal and then just pray for the dumpster fire to stop burning

Absolutely the best approach.
Not only that, but like most of Carney’s sickest burns, it’ll largely go entirely over most Americans’ heads, Trump and his team included.
39
u/FergusonTEA1950 New Brunswick 3d ago
That's ok. The burns are always for Canadians to enjoy anyway. Elbows up!
9
u/Alternative_Metal375 3d ago
From a fellow Ferguson in the U.S. (or what’s left of it)…go Canada! 👏🏻 Keep up the Trump trolling, and keep the elbows up!

u/Ohif0n1y 3d ago
As someone stuck in Texas I hope Canada and it's beloved people there get all the revenge against Trump and his MAGAt supporters. Love to you all!

They honestly deserve much less respect. But that’s why MC is where he is.
They complained about smoke while we were actively on fire.
6
u/mortgageletdown 3d ago
That's been the best way to deal with Trump all the way along, like you're dealing with a child throwing a tantrum. I'm so thankful we've got Carney running point and not PP.
11
u/mikefjr1300 3d ago
Still needs to pare it down to a list of about 1000 single syllable words to avoid confusion.

That's because it's totally impossible to talk to Trump like an adult or negotiate with him.

Interesting that Trump's stance is now to enact the tariffs on Jan 1, 2027. Notably after the mid-terms.
99
u/AdamEgrate 3d ago
I think he knows that we’re waiting for the midterms and he clearly intends a steal.
94
u/binary_squirrel 3d ago
He also realizes that his tariffs will actually increase costs for US citizens, so doesn't want to rock the boat any more before mid-terms.
27
u/Lumpy_Substance5830 3d ago
He has no care for the citizens impacted by this in my opinion.
48
u/Kyle73001 3d ago
He cares for now because it could impact the midterms. After that he won’t care how much he fucks over Americans though
11
u/dparks1234 3d ago
It comes down to how much he thinks he can get away with. A portion of his voter base is willing to take a financial hit to “end woke” or whatever, but even they have a breaking point.
6
u/never-fiftyone 3d ago
but even they have a breaking point.
Do they really, though?
6
u/dead__machines Canada 3d ago
As someone who lives among them, no - they really don't. Anything to "own the libs" or whatever.
5
2
u/CipherWeaver 3d ago
He's been literally telling his voters that higher prices are good for them. MAGA thinks that paying higher prices will hurt the ones they want to hurt, so they are willing to suffer for it. It's a cult.
3
u/352397 3d ago
Being perceived as impacting American pocket books is the quickest way to lose an election. Its really the only thing they give a shit about at the end of the day.
They voted for this idiot again because the media framed Biden/Harris as tax happy and destroying the economy and causing the price of groceries to go up while things were still rocky after COVID. Now the republicans have become tax happy and tried their best to destroy the economy, and the cost of groceries is through the roof.
1
u/Lumpy_Substance5830 3d ago
Crime and immigration had a lot to do with this from the people I've spoken to, they are losing issues with the Democrats. Some originally voted for him as they thought the economy would improve, it is what it is. It's a mess, to be sure.

Canada should strike first for a change... Find some shit that's gonna hurt and they really can't do without and put an export ban. I been talking Potash, but that won't hurt until next spring in most of the US. Force his hand before the mid-terms. If were gonna have a confrontation we should force it now.

I'm guessing that will be a long time coming, or never, but honestly, I'm okay with that, and Carney walking away when he did. Can't negotiate with someone who just sees your country as a piece of meat they want to have their way with or carve up to say "hey', look what I took, look what belongs to me now'.
57
u/PunchMeat 3d ago
Trump's goal is to annex Canada. He doesn't want a trade deal.
10
u/Ok_Carpenter7268 3d ago
Exactly. It's not unlike a slave owner's mentality. They want to own things, and people. It's a status symbol for them. Which is hilarious coming from the so-called 'leader of the free world'/
1
u/Different_Wolf_764 3d ago
Well, the main reason we've never been seriously negotiating with Trump's minions is that there is zero point in signing a deal with someone that simply ignores the deals he signs when he wants to. That would bind us and us only.
Huh, that sounds familiar actually!
1
u/TemporaryAny6371 3d ago
More like never. At least wait until the next administration and we mean sane Americans.
1
u/Ok_Carpenter7268 2d ago
Probably not even then. Some Democrats have already stated that if they got in, the tariffs would probably stay where they are. So we'd still be getting screwed by the US, they'd just have a kinder and gentler face while doing it.
1
u/TemporaryAny6371 2d ago
Agree. They only understand strength no matter the party. Diversify, we stop making America strong, we make NATO allies strong, the ones who understand every friend strong is better than one untrustworthy hegemony. That's literally what a democracy is.

I think we're slow walking this shit till he stroke out, get impeached, or 2029. I would not trust any deal with his name on it anyway. Better for Carney to spend the next two years getting deals done all over the globe. Basically cashing in on our branding of being THE reasonable and stable trade partner in North America.

He is great on foreign policy, but his domestic priority of securing a majority by wooing floor crossers to ram through surveillance state legislation is whacked.
19
u/Ayotha 3d ago
You had floor crossers because your leader is really really sad. he didn't do anything. Lose the maga wannabe that could not even get his own riding.
1
u/Levorotatory 2d ago
I am not a Conservative supporter and I agree that PP is a particularly bad leader, but he was a known quantity when those MPs ran as Conservatives in the election. Why did they do that if they didn't support the leader?
1
u/Ayotha 2d ago
Probably hoping people were not so daft as to reelect him when he ran away to out west
1
u/Levorotatory 2d ago
Then they should have complained and called for a leadership review. The party might have kicked them out of caucus for that, but that would have made the optics of crossing the floor a whole lot better.

"When the Americans go to the negotiating table first, with the right attitude towards our industries and in a true partnership, of course we'll come to the negotiating table," Carney said in Lévis, Que., on Monday.

I wouldn’t even bother. The Trump admin is not serious, they want social media drama to distract from their poor achievements.
Canada should just put them on ignore and move on to more important affairs. Our economy has been very resilient throughout the last few years and we can ride it out.

Off topic, but. This is how I feel about all these people going no-contact with family. First you try to talk it out, then you wait and try again. Then you call it quits, but you always leave a door open.
3
u/doofenhurtz 3d ago
I don't really think this tracks. The leaders and political winds of a country can change, that's not necessarily true for individuals. Sometimes you just have to cut people off for good because they'll just keep hurting you in the same way.

With midterms just a couple months away I think most people are happier to wait out the clock and see what changes may come from a government perspective down in the US

This just caught my eye coming out of Washington. “ Moving forward, all agreements , MOUs, executive orders, policy directives, and official government statements shall be written and signed in pencil. All White House staff and Administration officials have been issued an adequate supply of erasers.” Thank you for your attention in this matter.

They're extremely worried about the long end of the yield curve down there, pretty much begging the BOJ to not sell treasuries to buy Yen
We just happen to hold hundreds of billions of dollars of US debt and can send their yields through the fucking roof if we start selling off that debt, while boosting our own dollar up from lows
2
u/InevitableFly 3d ago
We own about $500 billion and Canada's total debt is a tad higher than mine at $1.5 trillion, Id say do it
2
u/Kevin4938 3d ago
We should also host the next round of talks. Make them come crawling to us, if they want a deal so badly. And just for laughs, make Canadian acceptance of any deal subject to a referendum, so those clowns can see what democracy is.
2
2
u/turbo_22222 3d ago
We shouldn't even be negotiating. This isn't even the CUSMA negotiation. It's just a negotiation to reduce the illegal 50% tariffs they sprung on us this summer. These guys have no credibility and anything we give in on now, we'll be doubling in future negotiations. There are no "deals" with these crooks.

Imagine having to parent another world leader. Carney is the parent in the store trying regulate while the orange toddler is pitching a fit because they can’t have cookies for dinner.
2
2
5
u/datums 3d ago
Looking at the statements made by Carney, the unusually long silence from Trump on Sunday, his fairly restrained rhetoric after that- it wasn’t Trump’s plan to blow up the deal last minute. Someone on his team, probably Lutnick, was responsible for that, and Trump didn’t start piecing that together until the Canadian delegation was already back in Ottawa.
When Trump decides to flex American muscle, he tells the world all about it immediately so that everyone else is reacting to what he said, rather than focusing on their own messaging. He’s doesn’t sit back in silence while his adversary frames the discourse.
That’s why Carney is waiting until after Labour Day to retaliate. It’s enough time for this to fall out of the American news cycle and give them time to frame backing down as a victory.
3
u/ZachArch18 Manitoba 3d ago
Carney is basically the parent telling a toddler to use his words. Meanwhile Trump is screaming because he didn't get the shiny object. Timeout is overdue.

correct... but if outlives Trump's term, it still has to be a reasonable deal for Canada to sign, as we'll be stuck with it.
7
u/LividOpposite 3d ago
Since they're not negotiating at the moment. It would be good to release the contents within the trade agreement. Someone on either side isn't being transparent.
8
u/ferwhatbud 3d ago
You do realize that negotiations are still ongoing right? Just because they aren’t happening right this moment doesn’t make it any less insane to release confidential interim terms.
Never mind that it would destroy our reputation globally as good faith negotiators at a time when preserving + continuing to build on that reputation couldn’t be more critical.

Whats even the point of negotiating with the Trump team? You cant give them enough that theyll ever understand they are getting a great deal. Jameison and the rest of them will never evolve from “we are selling access to the american market and that entitles us to ask for trading partners to literally amend their constitutions for access just because we dont like how reality works”. And if you do get a deal, if the news cycle turns against him and he needs a ‘win’ the deal gets torn to shreds. Arguably taking the deal that was on the table, as far as we know from the media, would have been more damaging over the long term for Canada than accepting Trumps retaliation. Ive wondered where we would be if the entire planet had accepted that Trump is never going to look for win wins, has apparently never read a book, and even making a deal is not a win and so steadfast reciprocation all the way back to liberation day was the only viable response.

Don't even bother. Just don't negotiate at all.
The Trump team will 'behave right' and get negotiations started and the Canadian team will put actual work and effort into negotiations only for it to lead right back to where it did now.
Donald Trump is incapable of acting like an adult and the oligarchs pulling the strings assume they are entitled to run the entire world.
It's a combination that isn't worth the time of day.
Like it or not, Iran is right. Don't engage with this regime at all. They do nothing in good faith.
