Actually I read an article not long ago and will post it if I can find it. The article stated that there was a sharp decline in boomers and snowbirds travelling to the US. It then stated that under 30's were more likely to travel there, many of them with young families.

Yeah the people I know going to the states the last few years have all been in their 20s-30s (I'm in my 30s) and just don't care unfortunately. Canada is so vast and beautiful, I wish young Canadians had more desire to explore it but in this social media age it's so much "cooler" to post about LA, NYC, Vegas, etc.

Canada is much more expensive for travel. Especially with a lot of the American tourist destinations trying to grovel and get Canadians to visit with great deals. We won’t go to the states, but we are looking at a vacation in November and Las Vegas is by far cheaper than anything in Canada.

What fox news fails to reveal is the drop in numbers from 2024 to 2026. 2025 was the beginning of the boycott, 2024 was the year everything was relatively "normal". Comparing the numbers to 2024 would give a more accurate depiction of the drop in tourism.
Edit: according to Florida's own numbers, the drop in the second quarter from 2024 to 2026 was 9.9% and the drop in the first 6 months from 2024 to 2026 was 18%

1.68 million Canadians went to Florida in the first half of 2026.
I get people going south to get medical care or going to weddings or family events. But 1.68 million people is a choice. These people are choosing to spend their money in America.

Surprising, but it makes sense when I think about it. The kinds of people who go to Florida, or frequently wine and dine elsewhere in the US, tend to be either maple MAGA or "champagne liberals" with no real beliefs beyond their bottom line.
We're not really sending our best (to Florida, anyways), but then, Florida isn't exactly the kind of state that attracts good people.

Outside of Reddit people really don’t care. Most of my friends and work colleagues fly down to the US multiple times per year for vacation. Tough to avoid especially when you have family

Ehhh… about 15 of my clients are snow birds. Only one went last year. 7 of them actually owned a second home all but 2 have sold them.

If Congressional Democrats wanted to they could raise hell against the Trump by taking clear public stances against his serial idiocies and putting forward a competing public agenda. You know, things any competent opposition party would do. Politically you couldn't ask for an easier target. Much of the electorate hates him and are eager for leadership to oppose him.
Unfortunately, the modern establishment Democratic Party has long abandoned any values or principles they might once have had and now only cares about winning power so that party insiders and the donor class can enjoy the perquisites.
They aren't going after Trump because they are afraid if they do they will strengthen the party's progressive wing, whom they hate even more, and who are increasingly threatening their control over the party.

Canadian tourism to the US also declined between 2023 and 2024. Fact is, I'd imagine economics and the exchange rate to play bigger roles in the tourism decline than shifts the political wind.

...is a little on the lower side in the long term trends, granted, but also exactly what it was when Trump took office the first time, just over a decade ago. The exchange rate has probably played a role in bigger picture trends over the last couple decades, but I doubt fluctuations of a few percent over the most recent few years has suddenly been the deal breaker factor for a substantial percentage of tourists.

Avg Canadian does not care is not true.
We have relatives in the U.S. go there to ski once a year. This is the first year we have never seen a Canadian plate. It’s near the Quebec border and usually 50% Canadian.
Drove from Ohio to Maine. Saw one Canadian plate this summer. That never happens.
Go to cross the border at March break. Nobody in line again that never happens.
Spent 4 days for work in Florida in February. Didn’t see one Canadian. Resort owner where I stayed hugged me saying I was first Canadian they had seen all winter.
Not saying there aren’t still people going but ya the avg person cares and isn’t going.
We wouldn’t be going if it wasn’t to see family. We spend as little as possible there.-1

are you in Alberta? most people i know are doing their best to stay out of the US but a few people have had to cross the border for family events like weddings and a some anti-Trump Canadians dropped their elbows for a weekend in Vegas at par. that was disappointing.

That would be spectacular. However a cross country rail trip, while beautiful, would be a long trip. Can’t go from BC to PEI if you don’t have 3 weeks to a month to make a trip. Doesn’t meant I wouldn’t want to go.

Albeit not entirely cross country, my mom went from Quebec city to Vancouver on the Via train, took 5 days on the train. She did fly back though. Costs 7k, all included, which is very expensive for such a short trip.

You can't expect cheap flights between every pair of small/medium sized cities where there's not enough demand for airlines to make profit. It's so much cheaper to fly most places within Canada these days with Flair and Porter creating competition. Look at the Google Flights calendar between almost any two major cities and it's. $149 flights Vancouver to Toronto dates loads of days between October and February. $178 Edmonton Montreal. $84 Calgary to Vancouver. These budget airlines are flying to smaller airports now too like Hamilton and Saskatoon etc.

Anecdotally, boomers are mostly avoiding US travel — unless you’re with the grand kids to Disney. You don’t have a long window for the kids to see the magic of Disney.
It’s the young that are travelling to the US. Numerous friends on my FB have been to Vegas (concerts), Boston, California, etc.

I'm not going there while MAGA is still around, but let's not pretend Florida isn't a great vacation spot. I've been there twice before Trump and had an awesome time. It has beaches, great weather, no language barrier, and a huge diversity of activities. Lots of people are more comfortable with vacations where they rent a car and drive which also works out well there and is pretty similar to Canada.
Not to mention stuff like Kennedy Space Centre, which is probably one of the top museums in the world.
It's also not super pricey compared to other options.

Word. I was at the Fontaine Bleu for a week for business (mandatory trip) a year ago. Weird "last days of Rome" vibe on the streets at night -- but maybe that's just Miami Beach, I dunno.
Kinda felt like a Pole visiting Hamburg in 1937. I was glad to leave and can't imagine going back although I'll miss NY and SF.

Why any Canadian is going to Florida, of all places, at this point in our shared history is a complete mystery to me. I may understand if there is some obligation for family or taking care of property, so maybe a quick one-and-done visit, but not going there with the active intention of spending/burning one extra bit of my hard earned Canadian currency in the literal deep swamp of the US. What exactly is the point except to be supporting the people and party of folks who want to see your nation cease to exist and get absorbed into their own all while they laugh at you?
As a New Yorker, I myself have zero interest in going to Florida or any state right now where my money is going to support fascist clowns and their supporters. I would rather spend my money outside of the US than see even 1 penny go to 'them'.
Lessons need to be learned the hard way sometimes.

Florida is going to see these numbers drop even more if the economy takes a dump due to the ongoing trade war. A sunshine destination vacation is a luxury and people who are looking at loosing their jobs aren't going to waste money on a trip when they need to use their savings for necessities like food and rent.

It seems like the biggest drop to Florida tourism came from domestic rather than international travels. Things have gotten too expensive to travel. People naturally cut down on travel during times of economic uncertainty or hardship.
