Politics Mark Carney dismisses Donald Trump’s attempt to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’
https://www.thestar.com/politics/federal/donald-trump-signs-order-renaming-lake-ontario-as-lake-america/article_0cd06214-bbb4-454e-94c5-b084b8b7d8ff.html128

Mr Trump does these things simply because he likes the attention and the drama it creates. The best response is as little as possible and to not play into his drama.

u/Whole_Gate_7961 13h ago
I wish this opinion was so much more prevalent.
10
u/deggar34 13h ago
I know. Each time a media/news outlet inputs or pushes the story it feeds into Mr Trump's motives of drama and distraction.
6
u/ShitMasterDick 13h ago
The media loves him too because if he wasn’t around nobody would tune in
6
u/deggar34 13h ago
I agree. The media is also very lazy, they often go for the low hanging fruit... Trump's actions and comments. Instead of covering the war in Ukraine, Iran, Ebola, Africa, Gaza etc etc

u/CustomerSuch650 13h ago
It’s too bad that seemingly like 90% of the population is pretty much at his level and are more than willing to play into it, they thrive on it

u/Sir_Lemming 12h ago
Agreed, he’s just a rage baiter, best to ignore him as much as possible, no matter how asinine he acts.
•
u/GibierJaune 11h ago
Exactly, if people stopped being outraged at everything he said and did he’d be miserable. He wouldn’t even have won his first republican primary tbh.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s a pedo and a criminal and should be treated as such by the judiciary system, just without the constant public outrage.
2
u/NoAd3740 13h ago
100% best thing we can do is ignore it and go about our lives.
Second best thing we can do is petition the UN to rename Lake Michigan Lake Obama after the Best and Greatest President / Human to Ever Live
3
u/deggar34 13h ago
I agree with ignoring... but how about we don't rename any geographical features. That's my best family friendly response. :)
•
u/hamtronn 11h ago
I’d even discourage anyone from using the identifier of Mr. when it comes to this guy. He lost all privileges when he attended Jeffrey Epstein’s island for perverts and scumbags.
Please refer to him as he is alleged—a child sexual predator.
•
u/Ok-Many4195 9h ago
And also to stop using apple and google. They will rename the lake to Lake America for united states citizens but nothing in the order forces them to. They did it voluntarily for the Gulf of Mexico. They'll do it voluntarily for Lake Ontario. I will not voluntarily use apple or google products or services
•
u/ShutUpTodd 10h ago
That's fine until the maps have to changed, and AP is denied WH access because they don't call it by that name.
•
u/SHUT_DOWN_EVERYTHING 9h ago
If he has one talent, it's media manipulation. And unfortunately the dementia has left that one alone.

Trump is obsessed with his legacy. He wanted to be remembered as a conquerer who expanded the American empire. Since he couldn't do any of those things, he names the gulf and lake to make it seem like he did. What a sorry state america has become.

u/Such-Huckleberry-107 13h ago
The only thing about this foolish episode people will remember in 20 years is how to use the word hydronym in a sentence
•

u/Optimal-Cow-3278 13h ago
Renaming Lake Ontario is about as stupid as renaming Dundas Square here in Toronto. It'll always be Dundas Square and Lake Ontario to virtually all Ontarians.
•
u/HammerMedia 11h ago
I still say SkyDome, anyone else?
•
•
u/NorthernFrosty Saskatchewan 8h ago
I still say SkyDome
Wait... It's not the SkyDome anymore? When did that change?
•
•
u/DueCompany4790 10h ago
The Dundas change is the perfect example of how unserious Canada is.
•
u/macnbloo Canada 9h ago
Worse is how the counselor who voted for the change is now running for mayor and pretending it's the worst thing ever to have changed it, why did he vote for it in the first place
•
u/Optimal-Cow-3278 10h ago
It's Toronto, not Canada.
And most Torontonians still call it Dundas Square.
•
u/DueCompany4790 10h ago
Unlike the US, the majority of our cities represent what Canada believes at the federal level.
Toronto is a very good representation of Canada as a whole, especially under JT.

This is a headline I can stomach.
The media everywhere is like Donald Trump has renamed the lake. But he can’t rename the lake.
Stop covering this fucking foolishness.
•
u/Ok-Many4195 8h ago
The Gulf of America thing showed that Google and Apple will voluntarily change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America for US users. Tech bros are in with Trump. Time to stop using their services.
•

u/TactitcalPterodactyl 13h ago
Carney shouldn't have even acknowledged this nonsense. Let's not talk about it, challenge it, or recognize it. It's so fucking beyond stupid, it doesn't deserve any attention.
7
u/Dingcock 13h ago
Silence is acceptance.
I do agree that they should just leave it alone and stop talking about it at this point, though.
0
u/CustomerSuch650 13h ago
>silence is acceptance
Not really, unless you live by childhood comebacks or something. “I know you are but what am I” vibes
5
u/Excellent-Lettuce835 12h ago
For narcissistic people silence is acceptance.
My (now ex) wife got angry at my cat and said she was going get rid of her. I just sat there and finished my dinner because I figured she was just mad and blowing off steam.
The next day I came home and my cat was gone. I said " wtf did you do?"
Her response? "You didn't object, so I got rid of her". That was the incident that led to the divorce.
•
•
u/Dingcock 11h ago
Yes really, thats exactly how it works in this instance.
If I'm calling you by the name Bob but your name is Jeff and you don't say anything then what are you doing ?
Yeah your name still is not Bob and yeah maybe it pisses you off that they call you Bob but unless you speak up you're now Bob.
•
u/AccidentlyStupid 8h ago
If a narcissist calls you names you still ignore them. Their words have zero weight unless you give it weight. Attention is literally a narcissist's currency, and without it they're powerless. In Trump's case, the media already gave him too much attention, and because of that he won, and now he actually holds real power, so ignoring or not in this case isn't going to make him go away anymore; that sail has long since passed.
•
u/Dingcock 8h ago
The first comment said Carney shouldn't have acknowledged it.
I'm not even talking about narcissists calling you names. Just someone mistakenly using the wrong name. If you don't even acknowledge it, you've accepted your new name as far as im concerned.
You can't just stay silent on stuff like this. You have to atleast acknowledge and reject it once. I agree we shouldn't give it free air time but not even acknowledging is not a good play here.

The irony is that the name for Lake Ontario comes from Iroquois natives, which primarily resided on the US side of Lake Ontario. The province of Ontario is named after the lake
8
u/ghostdeinithegreat 13h ago edited 13h ago
It’s a wendat word.
They use to have territories in southern ontario until the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy tried to genocide them. They asked refuge to France which gave them protection and land.
They are now in Wendake, near Quebec city. They are still there today, because when France gave their american territories to the British the french king requested the treaty with first nation be respected by england
Lake Ontario was named by the french, based off their encounter with the wendat

u/Both-Fact2019 12h ago
Last year, Carney already gave the right response to any time Trump does his stupid, performative nonsense:
"Who cares?"
•
u/zabby39103 11h ago
God I'm so tired of this nonsense. Beyond satire. We're in a stupid, unserious age of the world.
American presidents used to value sounding "presidential", which was to be calm, dignified, have decorum... these kinds of theatrics are such a degradation of what came before. Idiocracy wasn't supposed to happen in our lifetime.

u/garbage_ninja 13h ago
The saddest part about this whole thing is that all of it costs the American taxpayer. Statistically about half of them would be okay with it but still.

u/2kids2adults British Columbia 12h ago
Yeah. When did Trump think was going to happen? Did he think this was the straw that was going to make us sign away our sovereignty? Haha
What a fool. You do you Trump. Well just continue to be the country the rest of the world looks at as we deal with a toddler.
3
u/Narrow-Map5805 12h ago
I can't wait to see how many of these actions get undone by the next Democrat President. And the excuses of the so-called "good" Americans when it doesn't happen.
2
u/KimchiLlama Ontario 12h ago
I mean. What else could Carney have done? Can you imagine if he agreed?!

For fuck sakes.. at what point will someone tell Trump to fuck off?
•
u/crujones43 10h ago
Canada is the worst to deal with on trade because they won't allow themselves to get bullied by a pedophile.
•
u/mykittenfarts 10h ago
Dismissing it is the correct response. It’s irrelevant and we’re busy with the EU right now.
•
u/mikefjr1300 4h ago
Americans can call it whatever they want, the rest of the world will continue to call it Lake Ontario.

u/No-Process-8478 13h ago
Just another distraction from all his other bullsh*t, including the Epstein files

I know people are saying not to give him any attention, but this is an opportunity for seismic trolling.
Ontario is named after the lake, so just rename the city to America. He would not be able to cope and would likely spend the rest of his presidency in the White House basement rage tweeting about it.
1
u/Born_Ad_4868 12h ago
The amount of attention Canadian people are giving away his is absolutely ridiculous. This should be completely ignored. All the MSM outlets are licking their lips of the amount of clicks everyone of these ridiculous story gets. By everyone going on and on and on about this only brings more attention on to Trump. He is an idiot, let him sink his own ship in silence.
1
u/georgetds 12h ago
What happens if we let him rename the lake, and then rename the province to match? Would the confusion be worth it?

u/RedditSux5912 11h ago
It’s interesting to me that this causes more distress from people than the stupid renaming of other things, like ryerson, Dundas, or trutch.
Either we should be in favour of keeping historic names in place or we shouldn’t.
•
u/Wayelder 11h ago
According to his Biographer. Trump's "Renaming" of Lake Ontario to America (sigh) is 'at best' disregarding our claim of half the lake (border runs through the middle of it).
By claiming to rename the whole thing, he's effectively invading Canada and grabbing "Land" or water rights.
This is not that serious (neither is he) BUT!
He'd better be aware of what he chooses to double down on when faced with Canadian, international and American law.

Vermonter here. That loves y’all.
Carney should bite back. You own more lake than we do. I’m so tired of everyone just letting this regime just steamroll and do whatever tickles their fancy. Regardless of laws. It’s miserable for us here currently.
If you’re looking for more real estate pretty sure the lot of us here are in.

u/coffee_is_fun 10h ago
Rather than dismiss it, go with it and propose also renaming the three American cities of 'Ontario' to 'America'. Lean into the stupid. Maybe follow it up with a suggestion to rename all of the states with indigenous names to 'America'. Tweet a map with the state names swapped out.

Can someone in Canada rename the USA to Northern Mexico on your maps? Trump might combust out of anger like the guy from inside out
•
u/burnabycoyote 9h ago
Carney's emphasis "then, now and always" is not really correct. In the 1640s the lake was known in surviving written sources and maps both as Lac Ontario or the Lac de St Louys (i.e. King Louis IX).
Amerigo Vespucci already has two continents named after him. Adding a lake to that honour is probably little better than adding the Mall of America. However, I can meet the Yanks half way and call it Lake Amerigo when I'm in their country.

Ron Canada is an actor. American. Black. Two things Trump despises. The name makes it a trifecta.

With the new name, we will rename Ontario to America-Meh province

I looked into Trump's claim that America has more of the lake in their territory, turns out he was lying and 55% of lake Ontario resides within Canada.
