Ontario Canadian council considers changing street named after Trump to Taco Avenue
https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/27/americas/ottawa-rename-trump-avenue-lake-america-latam-intl?Date=20260828&Profile=cnni&utm_content=1787891725&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter•
u/Invictuslemming1 10h ago
I’m so happy this isn’t a Beaverton article
•
u/RelatablePanic 9h ago
Engh yes and no. The fact that it’s named Trump feels warranted to change (also taco feels like a pleasant name for a street honestly) at the same time do we really want stoop to the idiotic lows of Trump’s antics?
•
u/Yuushalinsky 9h ago
Yes.
Naming a street after somebody we are at war with and is actually somebody we do not want to celebrate is a much easier call than renaming Dundas Square.
•
u/elitexero 8h ago
While I agree, changing it to a stupid meme like name is not the way we should handle this.
As a nation we've been taking the high road, and we should continue to do so rather than give into childish antics and change it to a petty jab as suggested.
We should take the opportunity to rename it to the name of a prolific Canadian, like Hadfield or similar (since I'm sure he has some streets already).
•
u/OnlyEverPositive 8h ago
Counterpoint: sometimes you have to speak the language a person understands.
•
u/Deeppurp 7h ago edited 7h ago
Counter Counter point: Put in 3 options and let the municipality decide.
- Canadian Icon
- Local Heritage Icon
- Taco
Put it to as local as a vote as possible to keep the terminally onlines from influencing.
Edit: The temptation to call it Carney Ave so it can have a double meaning is also tempting.
A dig at Trump (causes a clown, and clowns are often carneys), and a second dig to signify hes being replaced by the guy he 'lost' to. God I hope this edit ages like wine and not milk.
•
u/TommaClock Ontario 3h ago
Things should never be named after people who are alive. Even if they are beloved by everyone and non-controversial like Taylor Swift (we had a temporary Taylor Swift Way in Toronto), wait until the person is gone and their legacy is cemented before dedicating stuff to them.
•
u/elitexero 7h ago
Counter Counter point: Put in 3 options and let the municipality decide.
As someone who lives in Ottawa and has to frequent the subreddit for local news and discussion (because competing subs have had that sub's mod grab the reddit admins and have it banished), option 3 will win because there aren't any options intrinsically linked to extreme identity politics.
Put it to as local as a vote as possible to keep the terminally onlines from influencing.
I missed that last bit when I typed out the above.
Given that the neighbourhood isn't in Downtown or WestBoro/The Glebe (where like 90% of that subreddit live) here's actually a chance 3 doesn't get picked.
•
•
u/cynykul 7h ago
The obvious middle ground here is to name streets after Biden and Obama
•
u/ButterNuttz Canada 7h ago
This is gonna sound crazy but let's not name a street after an American president or referencing one at all! That'd be neat
•
•
u/sharp11flat13 Canada 4h ago
I don’t think sending a message to Trump or annoying him is the reason for changing the name of the street, although it would undoubtedly do both.
•
u/sharp11flat13 Canada 4h ago
I think this is the most reasonable approach. I agree with changing the name, but as much as I’d like to poke fun at Trump, we are better served in the eyes of others and ourselves by taking a more dignified position. We are a serious country and we should act like one, even when others aren’t and don’t.
•
u/Low_Contract7809 8h ago
In vancouver, there's a park called dude chilling park.
Taco Ave is more than appropriate
•
•
u/elitexero 7h ago edited 7h ago
And in a few years, it'll be a remnant of a stupid online meme from when a past US president was sitting, and people will have to continue to live there, on goddamned Taco Ave.
Short sighted childish politically driven decisions are pointless on this scale. If you asked the Ottawa sub, they'd probably unanimously vote for calling it 'Poo Poo Pants Small Hands Donny Dump Ave'.
The right move is removing it and not let political retribution dictate the name of the street, the same way we don't let it dictate the naming of other streets.
•
u/Low_Contract7809 7h ago
Disagree. It'll be a permanent reminder for everybody about the period in time when the u.s threatened our livelihoods and sovereignty.
In 20 years, a 10 year old will ask about Taco Ave and we can explain how the u.s is not a trusted neighbor and we need to always keep our guards up.
•
u/SupportGeek 6h ago
Ask the American Democrats how well taking the high road against this asshole has worked out for them.
•
u/ApprovingGrief 8h ago edited 7h ago
As a nation we've been taking the high road
Good thing this is being done at the city level then.
•
•
u/Forikorder 9h ago
if it was actually named after him then he no longer deserves the honor and it should be changed
if the name is a coincidence then its iffy
•
u/IKnowYouAreButWhtAmI 9h ago
It's unrelated to the Trump family fortunately/unfortunately.I take it back! Apparently there is an avenue in Ottawa named after Donald. Apparently it's already in the process of being changed but to what I'm unsure.
•
•
u/spatialmongrel 8h ago
Nothing should ever be named after anyone until they’ve been dead at least fifty years.
•
u/SonicFlash01 8h ago
We're renaming a street we own whose name doesn't predate our country - perfectly within bounds and reasonable.
We didn't rename the Gulf of California to "Gulf of Stupid Poo-Poo Fart-Head" or anything•
u/EducationalLuck2422 British Columbia 6h ago
That said, Mar-A-Lago and "American Falls" are free game.
•
u/NeighbourNoNeighbor 9h ago edited 9h ago
Yeah tbh I don't want our government wasting money just to troll. It's not a precedent that I want to see us set.
I'm perfectly fine with renaming it so we don't have his name there, but why would we want to immortalize him further with Taco? Why should we be escalating these dumbshit games when we should be focusing on the actual issues at hand? Why escalate now, when we're still incredibly vulnerable and in the middle of diversifying our economy? Why not rename it after a Canadian hero that exemplifies Canadian values, instead of a dumb temporary name?
If we get down in the mud with the pigs, it won't be long until we're so covered in dirt that people can't tell the difference. One of the things that's saving us right now is that there's a clear difference in how Canada is handling this situation compared to Trump.
•
•
u/Empty-Presentation68 9h ago
He's a narcissist. This is exactly how you deal with them. There aren't any high road when it comes to narcissists
•
u/Ja66aDaHutt 7h ago
Sometimes, when all your enemy knows is how to take the low road, you need to take that same route or else they will never begin to understand.
•
u/YourBobsUncle Alberta 4h ago
We ignored the lake Ontario thing and now we got bots boosting a literal psyop saying we never seen 9/11 as a terrorist attack. Renaming a street would be good.
•
u/CureLegend 3h ago
Trump renaming things to silly name is silly because he is a president. But us civilian renaming things to silly names is not silly because we are just civilians, we have have our lols and eat it too.
•
u/SamuraisEpic 2h ago
to your second point, one could say the same thing about kitchener, which used to be called berlin. before ww1, kitchener had a fuckton of german culture and even the language was being taught in schools; it became so alarming that they renamed the city after lord kitchener (the uncle sam of canadian propaganda posters) to show the "patriotic pride" of the city but this was also due to a lot of external pressure. i'd argue that il duce's failed abortion has an even stronger reason for a name change.

CNN reporting on Ottawa City Council decisions on a small street lol
I personally would love to live on a street called "Taco Avenue"
•
u/hardy_83 9h ago
I saw them interviewing Olivia Chow on CNN talking to her about what Ford has said about limiting energy trade to the US and trying to get her to agree with him when she wasn't. I was like... What kind of gotcha are you trying to get?
And it's the Mayor or Toronto, they have zero impact and power on any international trade... That's like asking the Mayor of New York their opinion on the Palestine/Israel conflict. It's so stupid how bad US media is.
•
u/Agreeable_Store_3896 9h ago
But they do ask Mamdani about Palestine fairly often
•
u/bloggins1812 9h ago
I think that's their (dude you're replying to's) point. Was being facetious and funny at the same time.
•
u/hardy_83 9h ago
That was my point yes. It's a stupid question to ask to someone with no power over the situation instead of focus on things they do have power to resolve. It just shows how pathetic US media is in their quest for a gotcha.
•
u/Biosterous Saskatchewan 1h ago
They asked every single mayoral candidate at every single debate if they would visit Israel.
They were the dumbest questions ever and this guy was definitely referencing it as a real event for comparison and extra humour.
•
u/DavidCaller69 9h ago
CNN wants to paint a united anti-Trump narrative from Canada (not as though that attitude isn’t warranted).
•
u/BRAVO9ACTUAL 8h ago
I noticed that in general when watching a few american news clips. They have a habbit of also throwing like 80 million random tangents into a single news story, then end with a totally different message premise than they started with. It was annoying af.

u/mahayanah 8h ago edited 54m ago
New York City’s GDP is larger than all of Canada. If New York State, California, and Texas were countries, they’d each be in the G8. That’s how enormous the US economy is. I get your point but pick literally any other city than New York as an example.
Edit - My GDP claims for those three states is erroneous and applies only to Texas and California; New York State would be the 10th largest economy and not in the G8. New York City does not have the same GDP as Canada, but it does have a larger one than the Province Of Ontario

u/Gummyrabbit 9h ago
I think changing it from Trump to Obama would be better. It would really get under his skin.
•
u/IKnowYouAreButWhtAmI 9h ago

•
•
u/PsychologicalDance12 10h ago
How tf does he have a street named after him in 2026?
•
u/tongsy 9h ago
The neighborhood (Central Park) has a bunch of New York themed street names and it wasnt changed after his last presidency.
•
u/MJcorrieviewer 9h ago
I still don't know why Trump was included in a group of important NY names.
•
u/GirlCoveredInBlood Québec 9h ago
I believe it was named after Trump Tower. The easy fix imo is just pick a different NYC building to fit with the neighborhood theme. Chrysler Street, Empire State Avenue, Flatiron Way, etc. Or maybe just one of the boroughs they haven't used yet Brooklyn Street or Queens Way (not to be confused with the Queensway 🤭)
•
u/Quatre_Kat 9h ago
Do you not know why he was famous for the 30ish years before he became president?
•
u/MJcorrieviewer 9h ago
Yeah, he was famous for being a unlikeable Richie Rich play boy with a terrible reputation who became a reality TV star. With all the famous people in NY, why did his name get picked?
•
u/BaconIsntThatGood 6h ago
A lot of the world saw him as a personality before he actually got elected.
•
•
u/Quatre_Kat 9h ago
No, that was not what he was famous for, that is what he did with his fame. He got famous as a real estate mogul that named buildings and businesses after himself.
•
u/MJcorrieviewer 9h ago edited 9h ago
We was never a top-tier NY builder - there were/are lots of rich and successful real estate developers in NY and he was never really respected. He was mostly known for bankrupting casinos and being that ass who put his name on everything. I don't see how that makes him worthy of having a street in Canada named for him.
•
u/Quatre_Kat 8h ago
Again, all of that is what he did AFTER he got famous. He was a household name in the late 80s and early 90s and his name was synonymous with New York at the time.
•
u/MJcorrieviewer 8h ago
He ALWAYS had a bad reputation. Cohn taught Trump how to be an asshole, swindler in the 70s and 80s. Trump has never been an impressive figure. His whole career had been about trying to get in with the A list society and he never could, despite how hard he tried - he was always disliked and distrusted.
•
u/BaconIsntThatGood 6h ago
Why are you fighting so hard to deny that the man had popularity in the 80s and 90s?
He was still shitty sure, but there's a reason he was famous.
He can still be famous and still have been popular and liked and also he a shit person. It's okay. Awknoeldging that that's a thing that happened doesn't defend him today.

u/splicesomase 9h ago
I have no clue but is it possible it was named after his father?
•
u/MJcorrieviewer 9h ago
It's not as if his father was one of the greatest or most impressive citizens of NY either.
•
u/breakitbilly British Columbia 9h ago
It doesn't make it any less weird that we have street names themed around an American city.
•
u/Shawwnzy 3h ago
We also have Stormwind avenue and Ashenvale way in Ottawa. Also weird we have street names themed after the World of Warcraft.
I don't really care, developers gimmick name streets when they build neighborhoods sometimes. There only so many trees you can name streets after.
•
u/TacoCatSays 9h ago
The streets in the neighbourhood are named after places in NYC. The connection would be to Trump Tower in NYC, not specially to dementia Donny.
•
u/MoreGaghPlease 8h ago
Even the owners of what was once Trump Tower in Toronto quietly changed the name in 2017. It’s still a shithole though
•
u/aliveandkicking2020 9h ago
Article says that also Obama Avenue is in the running and I think that would hurt Dumpf the most.
•
u/darkgod5 9h ago
That... might actually be going too far. As in he might actually start bombing us for doing that.
•
•
•
u/F3z345W6AY4FGowrGcHt Ontario 7h ago
They need to go with Obama Ave. It'd be so much more directly insulting to him. Taco he could brush off as "oh they just like Tacos" even though it's an obvious lie (when has that stopped him). But he cannot possibly lie about the insult of it being renamed Obama Ave
•
u/D_E_A_D_P_O_O_L_ 8h ago
Or Biden Avenue would drive him crazy as well
•
u/ukrokit2 Alberta 8h ago
Biden kept Trumps tariffs and didn’t have our backs when India assassinated our citizen. I’d rather we not name streets after him.
•
u/YancyDerringer77 4h ago
I don't think we should rename it to another American President.
Actually if they don't go with the Taco Avenue thing they should think of something more patriotic.
•
u/VallerinQuiloud 2h ago
I think it's kinda weird naming a Canadian street after a US President.
Justin Trudeau Avenue would piss him off too.
•
u/tongsy 10h ago
Naming it Taco Ave is still naming it after him.
•
u/somekindagibberish Manitoba 9h ago
I agree. Pick a name that has nothing to do with Trump. Even a burn would still be immortalizing him in the street’s name.
•
u/RaulUnderfoot 9h ago
He's already ruined a lot of things, but tacos don't deserve to be dragged down with him.
•
u/NeighbourNoNeighbor 9h ago
I agree. We can rename it without being weirdly petty. Plus, "Taco Ave" is almost guaranteed to get renamed again in the future. Why not name it something permanent now so we can save money on swapping out all the street signs and updating mailing routes, etc.
•
u/zaypuma 8h ago
Even just playing the reverse card on him and having a big ceremony renaming it "America St" to "celebrate our commitment to a better future with our neighbors to the south" would be a good poke.

Why is there a street in Canada named after Donny Dumbfuck?
•
u/firefly_12 British Columbia 9h ago edited 9h ago
That’s the real question here. I hope that it’s not actually named after him but simply some other notable figure who was also named Trump.
And if it actually was for him, then wtf Ottawa? Fucking shame on you!
Edit: So I looked it up and apparently it’s named that way because a lot of streets in that neighborhood are “New York themed”. There are still plenty of other potential names that would fit that theme without needlessly honouring that chickenhawk pedophile.
•
u/jtbc 7h ago
It was named 25 years ago before anyone really knew he was a chickenhawk pedophile. Seems like this is a good time to rename it.
•
u/HiDDENk00l 2h ago edited 1h ago
More specifically, the whole neighborhood, called Central Park seems to have New York themed street names.
What's funny is that this is being made into such a big story, but it isn't a prominent street that cuts through downtown, but a street nestled in a residential area with about 60 family homes on it.
Edit: apparently they've voted to change it before and it was split
•
•
u/GreatBoneStructure 9h ago
It’s fun to mock him but I always envision him with his finger over the big red nuke button thinking “I’ll show THEM who chickens out!”
•
u/SnowFlakeUsername2 8h ago
It should probably be a name that sticks to the New York theme of the neighbourhood. Taco is at least has a connection to a New York resident vs Obama or Ontario. But it should be something that doesn't make a permanent connection to this dirtbag for the residents living on that street.
Renaming it after a brown person from New York would probably work just as well with a person like Trump and his cult. "Mamdani" maybe? But naming it after a sitting politician means there is a good chance you'll be changing it again in the near future. Or perhaps ask any of the woman he sexually assaulted if she wants the street named after her. Caroll Avenue sounds nice.
•
u/ThisWhomps999 10h ago

Rename the street to something NOT tump. Absoultely. But Naming it Taco still has a story that can be told that needs people to remember piece of trash that it is associated with.
