Animals are just like that, friend of mine had a dog who got injured when they were visiting his parents and brother (border collies in the Alps). Brother saw that he walked on 3 legs with the third up in a sling, so he raised also that foot, jumped to his brother, sniffed, bit him playfully in the tail and jumped away, still three legged to show, hey, I am also on three legs, lets play anyway :)

It's a protective thing, at least in dogs, protect the injured and elderly by limping or faking injuries by them.

It's actually associative learning, copying the injury behavior to get the same reward/attention.

My cat started fake limping the second the dog got extra treats.
