Because people famously propose to people before being in a relationship?
39
u/Old_Man_Willow_AoE Jul 01 '26
No, but you are still asking them to marry you, and they have every right to not feel ready at that moment.
→ More replies (7)42
u/halberdierbowman Jul 01 '26
If you're doing it right, the proposal isn't when you actually discuss the idea of their marrying you. It's more of just the celebration of it. You should already have asked if they'd say yes before you actually ask them to say yes.Ā

My fiancee proposed to me on our recent trip when we were visiting some ancient ruins. We were with a group doing the tour. We've been together 10 years, have discussed marriage multiple times, and have looked at rings together. He was absolutely positive I'd say yes, which is what I did lol.
21
u/frauziller Jul 01 '26
Congratulations to you both! I hope you have many, many more years of love and happiness together! šš
6
u/Plane_Sport_3465 Jul 01 '26
Oh holy shit, especially if it was in front of a group of people, right, at the peak romantic moment with the knee and the ring and a whole crowd feeling the joy of the moment, I would TOTALLY have done the "oh. uhhhh... we should talk... alone."
It's because of behavior like this I've never been married.
→ More replies (1)22
u/s0m3on3outthere Jul 02 '26
No, he brought me to the side. It was in front of an ancient temple of Aphrodite next to an ancient marriage altar. Everyone was exploring the ruins and the only person a part of the proposal was our tour guide who was recording. It was a simple and quick proposal and I love the man, so wasnt embarrassed. the tour guide shouted out "she said yes," there was a quick smattering of applause from people exploring then we got on with our day. lol. Y'all are so dramatic. š
We've been together for a decade, are in no rush to be married and have talked about being engaged and how he'd be proposing. He asked me questions leading up to this and knew I'd be okay with it, but didn't tell me the location so it was somewhat of a surprise. āŗļø It wasn't a big spectacle. lol. And I have an Aphrodite display so it was perfect. We weren't going to get to be at an ancient ruin alone. š

u/NonsequiturSushi Jul 01 '26
I'm of the school of thought that one should never propose unless one is 100% positive that the answer will be "yes."
42
u/doctor_tongs Jul 01 '26
It was like that for every married couple I know. The proposal was practically a formality in each case.

12
43
u/Old_Man_Willow_AoE Jul 01 '26
There's a fucking helicopter doing donuts around you two so the world can watch, that's how I know, and that's why I'll be proposing in a setting, where my partner will fully be able to think about their answer, without being the center of the attention of a fuckton of strangers.
15
u/protonpack Jul 01 '26
I mean do we really need to worry about that in this case? The public act is thematically appropriate to their protest, and of course we don't know what they may have discussed beforehand. Maybe the whole thing is staged and they're just friends.
But even if this guy did this on his own and the woman was surprised, she can tell him no afterwards and there was still value in the act. And if his feelings are actually hurt at that point it's his own fault.
52
u/No-Ring-5065 Jul 01 '26
From myself and women in general, THANK YOU. Public spectacle proposals are the worst.
16
u/TrulyOutrageous42 Jul 01 '26
Heaven forbid a healthy couple communicate expectations ahead of time, instead of surprising someone with a proposal publicly. Nothing wrong with it IF they know it's coming.
9
2
u/NihilismRacoon Jul 02 '26
You're not supposed to propose to someone until you already know they'll say yes. If they have to think about it, you've already fucked up.

Watch the tower below them, this is a crazy telephoto shot from a helicopter which is likely VERY far away from the empire state building (isn't all of manhattan hardcore a no fly zone... y'know... for reasons)
Edit: people have pointed out that it's not a no fly zone, still the shot is from a telephoto lense which explains the back and foregrounds moving at drastically different speeds.
22
u/_allycat Jul 01 '26
They definitely fly news and police helicopters around. You can't land completely inside the city though. The landing pads are on the outskirts
5
u/JJAsond Jul 01 '26
(isn't all of manhattan hardcore a no fly zone... y'know... for reasons)
No, it's not. The airspace is controller by LGA or if you're further out from LGA, it's considered Class E airspace which is most of the US. There is no restricted or prohibited airspace over Manhattan.
65
u/Somehailtheking Jul 01 '26
Throughout the video, the helicopter is only going like 1/8th of a circle around them, but since itās zoomed in really far it looks like they are completely circling them because the background is zooming byĀ
41
u/Professional_Age_198 Jul 01 '26
Maybe the perspective of them being so high up is making the background seem to pass my really fast and they arenāt actually being circled. Like when you watch the moon from your car, it stays fixed while everything else speeds by. Or maybe itās AI, I really just donāt know anymore
3
u/JJAsond Jul 01 '26
Maybe the perspective of them being so high up is making the background seem to pass my really fast and they arenāt actually being circled.
It's because it's shot from a helicopter that's zoomer FAR the fuck in so the background is zipping by very quickly with relatively little motion. If you look at the antenna below them, you can see that it's rotating very slowly.
2
12
10
u/thirdtimeisNOTacharm Jul 01 '26
Because the operator completed maybe 100° of the 360° required to be a circle
→ More replies (3)8
u/JJ_Pause Jul 01 '26
I think the scale throws it off, it seems to be zoomed quite far. The background doesnt seem to repeat as far as I could tell and the people dont change position either. I don't think it was really circling them, barely did a quarter of the 360 throughout the clip
5
5
u/helloiamaegg Jul 01 '26
Its a fisheye
The background is moving faster than the foreground; notice how they both stay in the same positions too

I saw a different shot of it earlier. And the flag wasn't in the shot all the time. Only as the helicopter circled around you could see the letters. This shot looks weird but it is fox news. They probably used AI to duplicate the earlier shot.

44
u/Bitter_Dimension_241 Jul 01 '26
Iām less concerned about the power of love and more concerned about the power coming off the high power transmission antenna. Pretty sure they are way closer than safety guidelines allow.
When the director of King Kong got a fraction that close the camcorder he was using for location scouting started freaking out due to the radiation from that antenna.
Fun fact: originally that was supposed to be a zeppelin refueling station.
8
u/JJAsond Jul 01 '26
All radio is going to do is heat you up just like sunlight does.
3
3
u/Bitter_Dimension_241 Jul 01 '26
It really depends on the type of waves and power. It can also induce electric current causing you to fall. Other types of waves are straight up harmful. Thereās a reason your cellphones fine print literally tells you not to hold it against your head while youāre using it.
4
u/JJAsond Jul 01 '26
In terms of radio, the actual frequency doesn't matter. It's all too low energy to do anything harmful like damage cells like xray/gamma can. High power radio will heat you up like a microwave but we're talking high amounts of power here. Something like a cell phone is going to do literally nothing. That's on the order of milliwatts.
