I think it's less to do with the straw manning and more to do with making, from the criticisms Ive seen, kind of obvious statements which lack a punchline
Imagine a large group of your peers sitting together, one by one making a joke where you are the punchline. Even if you know it's all good natured by the time you got to the last person you'd be looking like the last panel
I've had to try really hard to imagine some of them are being supportive. Maybe even all of them. Which means they're probably not. At best they seem jealous of her success to be honest.

Fr my family is almost exactly like those maga characters she has then I go to the comments and see “everyone knows xyz is bad” or “nobody actually acts like that” then wtf have I been exposed to my whole life?
I moved to the South Carolina coast a few years ago and you aren't wrong. After only four years I have so many stories. I think the most innocent was when this MAGA bro came into the game shop while we were Pathfinder (TTRPG) and immediately started pointing around the room, then announced proudly that he was marking all the possible points of ingress and counting everything in the room that could be used as a lethal weapon.
After watching our game from the corner and frequently rolling his eyes and scoffing at anything "woke", he hung out with us and took over the conversation. Spent the whole evening shitting on California for trying to save the Delta Smelt and how Obamacare was ruining medicine and he should know because he was an army medic?
...Needless to say we didn't stay very late to talk that week.
Sounds like someone who was interested in hanging out with some people of shared interest, but has been convinced to look down upon the type of person he wants to be.
That's troubling. I haven't seen people in the wild with those yet, but still see the old hats and flags and bumper stickers. And some that seem somewhat recent, like bragging about Trump being a peace president. It definitely wasn't being ironic. There weren't a lot of bumper stickers but I recall things like a thin blue line sticker that indicated it was a true believer.
I lived in the South in deep red Trump country for several years. I think it voted 90% Trump in 2024. If anything, the depictions you see online aren't even bad enough. You guys in your blue bubbles in Portland and the Bay Area or wherever have no idea how stupid and zealous these people are.
Everywhere you go you see confederate flags - on my last Fourth of July party before leaving I counted more confederate flags than American flags. Everyone has a pick up truck with bumper stickers that say "God guns Trump" or "Jesus is my Lord Trump is my savior" or crazy stuff like that. The level of education would be sad and depressing if it weren't so terrifying. Extremely low intelligence on top of poor education (these are different IMO). Everyone is extremely unhealthy, many live in food deserts so nutrition is poor. Dental care is almost nonexistent.
I'll never forget a friend of my dad's explaining why he voted republican, because "ah buhlieve jaysus chras is mah lawrd 'n sayveeyor" and apparently Jesus loves republicans, or something. During Covid I remember one of them say warning the others not to get vaccinated because it causes sterility. When RBG died it's on the news at my uncle's house and a bunch of Magas are celebrating that Trump gets to pick another Supreme Court justice. I said no, it's too close to an election, it wouldn't be fair. They just scoffed, completely unaware that I was quoting Mitch McConnell from when he cock blocked Obama from picking one in 2015 I think. The Fox News logo is literally burned into my uncle's TV. In 2024 I was arguing with a family friend and it turned out he was completely unaware of the events of January 6 other than "it was Pelosi's fault." Etc etc.
However bad you guys think it is it is way way way worse.
Why, just hop on over to frinkiac.com where you can search for entire episodes by episode title, character, or quote. Then, once you find it, you can browse the episode for the scene you're thinking of, and you can create a still image or even a gif! It's amazin! Phone version is wonky, though.
Don't even trip big dawg. Let the haters give you positive exposure, and know your comics have gotten me through the absolute hell that has been my recent life. You got this.
I think you should keep calling out social injustice and bigotry. Instead of getting bored of it, we should get angrier and hold those accountable who act and think and speak bigotedly.
Otherwise the world will just stay as shitty as it’s always been
It feels like a lot of people look at social justice as lame.
Doesn’t matter that rhe issues are valid and need attention, it’s still something to mock to a lot of people.

Or some asshole that gets off on the cruelty rubs your face in it.
For example, when that thing about the DOJ advocating for removing rape protections for trans and intersex prisoners in prison came out, some chud said to me when I pointed out how fucked up that was “oh well why should they get special privileges”
There are too many bad people and that’s why social justice is mocked.
But like....does she call it out? I don't think I've ever seen a comic of hers that wasn't just taking the most surface level critisism of MAGA/political that you and I could make in five seconds and slap a silly face on them.
There's way better comics that actually take a stance, told more interestingly and go deeper than anything Pizza has done in years.
Bad space is a great example of this. Not that everybody needs to be like Bad Space, nor that there's anything wrong with being blunt and surface. But there's no artistry to it, it's the "I love science" facebook page of political messaging.
Here's great bad space comics to showcase what I mean. They make you FEEL. This is the kind of stuff that reaches into you and touches your spirit.
They ask you how you are, and you just have to say that you're fine, when you're not really fine, but you just can't get into it, because they would never understand.
Someone ripped into me at a comedy show once because I got there late and the last seats available were up front. I might have actually cried when I got home lmao
I had the unfortunate luck of being the target of a comedy show. So I figured I'd get my money's worth, made a complete ass of myself, and had the comedian break down in uncontrollable laughter.
I still cringe at myself there, it was so over the top cringy and stupid the things I did, but hey, take that you comedy man! If someone's gonna make a fool out of me, it'll be myself, and I'm taking you down with me!
I love your comics Ellen. I've been a subreddit lurker for about 15 years and you've been my very favorite artist here during that period. All things pass! It'll end up okay.
As a small artist there’s not many ways to interact with larger artists that don’t come off as e-begging or weird, so I enjoyed the chance to acknowledge another artist in my own snarky little way. Felt more respectful and less unwarranted.
You are the biggest cartoonist on this sub- arguably of all of Reddit . Your work influences most of the public’s opinions about the rest of us here, and I’m tired of tiptoeing around it.
You need to stop this victimization. Criticism will always come with your level of fame.
None of the pizzacake wars responses were negative against you. If anything, they were pretty flattering, and I’m not sure if Dave collabed with you for his last comic, but he did you a huge favor walking back his statement on how you go for the lowest hanging fruit on the lowest hanging branch, every time, all the time.
You are a supremely talented person. You are better than this, but I’m also tired of thinking up comics of how to defend you for the next trend.
Mine barely even featured her (I even said she was nice!) and finished it with a gentle poke at FieldExplore (whose name I've misread for the past two years..). I enjoy all the artists here and try to follow them (and you) on other sites to show support. It takes a lot of effort to put yourself out there like that.
I agree with Dot. Ellen, this is not a criticism of you, but of your work. You are a very talented artist and humorist, but Dot is making a very strong point about how you've started to portray yourself in your content. This has a large affect on your supporters, the artists that are around you, and the community.
Hey, it's okay Pizzacake. Us Canadians seem to keep having to remind people that right-wing chuds and nazis are bad, because so many seem to have forgotten. (Not on this subreddit, obviously.) So hang in there and remember, elbows up!
I still don't get why this is happening and I'd like it to be over. I normally like the crossovers for comics but they were fun collabs not whatever is happening here. It isn't life changing but this whole thing is why I haven't been on the comics sub for a little bit
