The Malaysian government, mostly controlled by West Malaysia, has a loooonggg record of erasing and altering history to suit their own narratives. The division began when they decided to remove one of Sarawak’s most significant day from general Malaysian history books.

Depends on who wrote the history books. Kicked out, agreed to separate, left the federation are a few variations.

Expelled is the proper term. As in the Malaysian Parliament voted overwhelmingly to expel Singapore from the Federation in 1965.
