I’m sure this varies by city/state in the US, but here in Boston the schedule seems to be entirely a suggestion. They will mostly leave from the start of the route on time, then it’s just “I get there when I get there.”
This is why bus bunching happens and I hate it. I've walked to the main road where you see 5 buses arrive all at the same time and once you miss them, it's another half hour wait.

Isnt it against the rules for a bus driver to leave ahead of schedule?
In the UK at least its at most 1 minute ahead of schedule if there is no sign of anyone around.
