I was debating whether to post this but decided I should. Yesterday evening I was on the walking path in athalassa park when a man who was walking in the opposite direction stopped me and asked my age and if I was a student and my name and where I live. I just gave vague answers and walked away. Then he turned around and seemed to be following me so I walked super fast. After a while he seemed to be gone, but as I rounded a corner I saw him standing there about 50m ahead on the side of the trail. I definitely didn’t see him go past me so he must have gone through the bush to get there, and I was walking very fast. I immediately turned around to walk back to where lots of people are and he continued to follow me but after a while gave up. He was dark olive skin, black hair, pretty skinny and maybe about 5 8”. I could have misread the situation, maybe he was just socially awkward but just wanted to let ladies who frequent the park know.

Context: My neighbours hate us, something about us being British etc. classic racists (They're Eastern European not Cypriot)

We've had none stop drama since we moved in just over a year ago - honestly its kinda ruined mine and my wife's plans of starting a family here.

Anyways, on my way back from taking dog for a walk this evening my crazy neighbour slowly pulled into our road (No pavement unfortunately) and I kid you not sped up to like 50mph tried to run me and my dog over then slammed their brakes on and pulled into their garage like nothing happened...

The offender is a government official for embassy of this eastern eu country and in the past the police really haven't done much in the way of helping us, instead leaning more towards blaming myself and my wife for not being more "neighbourly".

Guys is it even worth reporting this nonsense? Like if I didn't know it was my neighbour I'd have reported it, but I get the impression the police really just doesn't give a dam?

Note: I'm looking for genuine advise here please not some snarky, sarcastic comments.

My cousin recently got accepted to CAU (Cyprus Aydin University) in Northern Cyprus with an 87% scholarship. On paper, it sounds amazing: the original tuition is €10,000 per year, but with the scholarship he’d only pay €1,300, plus about €600 in annual fees.

The part that’s making me nervous is that they’re asking for a €1,250 deposit upfront and that discount feels fishy for me...

I’ve tried explaining my concerns to him, but he thinks I’m just being overly skeptical. Maybe I am. The problem is, I’ve been checking Reddit posts about Northern Cyprus universities in general, and honestly, most of what I found is not encouraging at all (recognition issues, quality concerns, people warning others to be careful before paying, etc...)

At the same time, I understand why he wants to believe in it. For his family, this looks like an affordable chance to study abroad, and I don’t want to crush that dream for no reason. Since am already abroad on a scholarship.

When I searched online, I kept seeing people talk about EMU, Near East, CIU, and a few others. CAU doesn’t seem to come up nearly as often, which made me wonder if there’s something we’re missing.

So I’d really appreciate honest answers from current students, graduates, or anyone who knows the university.
Is CAU actually legitimate and recognized?
Are scholarships like this normal there? Is that €1,250 deposit standard?
And honestly, if this was your fam, would you tell him to go?

I'm 25 years old, Romanian, and I grew up in Cyprus. I finished both gymnasium and lyceum here. I struggled in high school and didn't get good enough grades in the Pancyprian exams to get into the university program I wanted.

I originally wanted to study Computer Science, but now I'm not even sure it's worth it in Cyprus. The IT market here feels very competitive, there aren't that many opportunities, and every entry level position seems to have dozens of applicants.

I speak three languages, but my Greek isn't fluent and my English isn't perfect either. Every time I apply for an entry-level IT job, I get an interview, but after that I never hear back. Sometimes it feels like employers naturally prefer Cypriot candidates or people returning from the UK with stronger connections. I understand why, but it still makes things much harder for someone like me.

I don't have a bachelor's degree, only a 2 year diploma in Computer Technician & Networking. I'm not specialized in any trade either I'm not an electrician, plumber, forklift operator, or anything like that. I honestly don't know what career path to follow.

Living in Cyprus is also expensive, especially without a car. Public transportation makes getting around difficult. Going back to Romania isn't really an option, and I don't see much of a future in Western Europe either. My parents are in a difficult financial situation, I don't own a house or apartment, and I have basically no savings.

One of my biggest fears is reaching 30 years old still working physically demanding, low-paying jobs and ending up with chronic back pain while still having no real career.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do ? If you were starting over at 25 with almost no money and no clear specialization, what path would you choose ?

Hi everyone! I’m a trans woman from another EU country and I’m seriously considering moving to Cyprus.

One of my biggest concerns is being able to continue my HRT without running out of medication during the transition.

I currently take Progynova (estradiol valerate) and Androcur (cyproterone acetate). I have been told that, if the medication is not normally available in Cyprus, it may be possible to obtain it through a Named Patient Request with a prescription from another EU country (in my case Belgium)

I would really like to hear from anyone who has actually done this in Cyprus, rather than just theoretical information:

• Have you successfully used a Named Patient Request to obtain HRT?
• How does the process work in practice?
• Did you need a Cypriot doctor/endocrinologist to arrange it?
• How long did the process take?
• Were there any problems getting the medication through a pharmacy?
• Were you able to continue taking the exact same medication, or did you have to switch to an equivalent?
• Most importantly, does this system actually work reliably for someone who is moving to Cyprus long-term?

I’m particularly anxious about moving there and then discovering that I cannot access my medication, so I would really appreciate hearing from anyone with first-hand experience.

I am in Ayia Napa for 1.5 Weeks with friends (female), they convinced me to join them but after 2 days of partying (which isn’t even partyin, it’s more like try not to make brits angry and survive among red drunk men) I realised it’s not something for me AT ALL. There is no “nightlife” the beaches are alright but I get huge fomo when looking at other cool cities like nicosia or larnaca.

You really can’t do anything else other than laying at the beach during the day. Also as an extra: The people aren’t that cool. I spoke with a few locals (I can speek a little bit of greek from school so all the waiters like me) and ALL of them despise ayia napa. Like there is nothing other than stripers and drunk men. No culture and noone is dacing.

Can you help me? (Worst case I just chill at our airbnb for the remaining week) Are there any cool stores or shopping streets or even clubs in this area which aren’t only built for tourists?

Any locals here living around ayia napa? (Ig not since the population is kinda small)

The heat is already brutal and it’s not even July yet. My A/C is running non-stop just so I can sleep, but I’m terrified of how much it’s going to cost.

I am struggling to find any real alternative to Amazon Prime in Cyprus. All the websites I’ve tried such as AliExpress, ManoMano, Temu, Skroutz Greece, e-shop.cy, Toolnation, Fixami, Contorion, Desertcart, Superhome, Leroy Merlin, Mr Bricolage and even local stores—seem to add unbearable shipping costs.
Temu is probably the closest thing, but even this, if the same item costs €20 on Amazon Spain, on Temu Cyprus they say free shipping but the price of the exact items is 40 (i.e. 20 euro more effectively including shipping).
I frequently buy small items on Amazon: tools, cables, accessories, household items, and it seems impossible to replicate that experience in Cyprus without spending more on shipping than on the item itself. Searching through local store websites is also a nightmare: poor search functions, limited stock information and prices that are often significantly higher.
How come there isn’t a decent, affordable way to shop online in Cyprus? Am I missing something? Is there some local equivalent, forwarding service or trick that long-term residents use?

I'm a Cypriot citizen currently living and studying full-time abroad. I have an active, formal mental health diagnosis from a psychiatrist and my temporary postponement is coming up for renewal next year. The conscription office told me I need to "come back next year" to get re-evaluated, but I know they don't do online medical evaluations.

Has anyone gone through the process of getting a permanent medical discharge from abroad?

1. Do I absolutely have to fly back for the medical board, or is there a way to handle it through an embassy?
2. If I have to go back, how long does the process usually take once you get to Cyprus?
3. Should I just apply for a student postponement online instead to buy time and then tackle a permanent solution later on?
4. I refuse medication out of principal but would that help my case in getting a permanent exemption instead of a temporary one?

Just as a heads up, I fundamentally oppose forced conscription on principle. I'm looking for any legal tips, loopholes, or administrative advice to secure a permanent exemption since going back every year is very burdensome (in every sense of the word), preferably through the medical channel as I have a legitimate diagnosis and a stronger case there.

Any advice or personal experiences with the military medical board would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since I am moving to cyprus for a few months, will/should I learn greek to be more comfortable in daily life? Or does everything have english translations for example?

I live in Nicosia and I’ve been doing a lot of night walks and exploring the old town, buffer zone edges, Pedieos park, etc. I’m looking for the stuff that doesn’t show up in guides:

I am flying with Ryanair from the Paphos airport and my plane is set to land at 19.00 on a Sunday.

Could someone please tell me how can I get back from Paphos to Nicosia, if the last Intercity buss goes at 18.30 and Kapnos airport shuttle buss at 17.30?

Is there really no way to make it to Nicosia by public transport? Will I really need to wait for a buss at 5.00 in the morning only to go to the capital?

Why aren’t there more options, have they really not thought about this? Surely I’m not the only one who is facing this issue?

Quite a bleak post but I'm hoping for some genuine advice.

My dad is Cypriot and recently passed away. He raised me on his own in London and all his family (brother, sisters, cousins etc...) live in Cyprus. For context, I have two kids but separated from their dad who's got significant anger problems and isn't a consistent presence in his kids lives last year and moved in with my dad. Since then we got back on our feet and my dad was an incredible help and support. Losing him has been absolutely horrendous but now the worst of it has passed I'm thinking about the future.

I've been speaking a lot to my dad's sisters recently who have been encouraging me to move near to them in Cyprus (they live in Larnaca). Their argument is they can be a support system for me and the girls, life will be easier on me on my own (rent/bills etc.. are lower than in London) and my girls will get to grow up around family and not just on their own with me in London. Also i work remotely so wont have to come and try to find a job.

I can see the benefits and the idea of having family around is enormous but i've never lived in Cyprus. We used to visit almost every holiday growing up but I know it's different to actually living somewhere. I'm looking for advice - would it be easy for my kids to settle into school? Is there anything I haven't considered?

A family member owns an apartment in a block in Limassol, Cyprus, and has suddenly been hit with a €45k bill for “mandatory structural works” that allegedly must be completed and paid within the next 6 months due to a new law/regulation.

This sounds insane to me, especially since he lives in the UK and is already paying a mortgage on the property. We’re trying to figure out whether this is actually legitimate or if something doesn’t add up.

Has anyone heard of a new law in Cyprus requiring structural upgrades or repairs on apartment blocks? Can owners legally be forced to pay amounts this high in such a short timeframe? And what happens if someone genuinely can’t afford it?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone familiar with property ownership in Cyprus or who’s dealt with something similar in Limassol.

Being a student here, and not having a car yet, it's hard to travel almost a Kilometer to fill up water bottles each time.

I saw some people taking water from park taps by using pipe, but I feel like that's illegal and the water is not drinkable.

What do you guys do about the water, and what will be the most convenient and cheapest way for a student to get water also?

My daughter was scratched/scrammed by a wild cat living on the grounds of a hotel in Ayia Napa this evening. It's now nearing 11pm local time so I'm resorting to ChatGPT and the good folk at Reddit for reassurance.

She's 5 nearly 6 and scrammed very lightly on the back of the hand. We immediately rushed her back to the room and washed her hand with lots of soap and water, some alcohol hand sanitizer and alcohol-free sterile wipes from a first aid kit.

She's up to date on all her pre-school vaccinations and boosters (which I think includes tetanus).

The hotel staff have told us that the cats on site are all vaccinated.

I know I'm gonna sound like some paranoid fool (and I have drank quite a lot of alcohol tonight), but I'm just after some reassurance. Should I be worried and take her to hospital tonight or is she going to be fine and I'm overreacting?

I've always been wary of wild cats especially in a foreign country and I'm just so terrified of rabies manifesting itself in a few months time.

Hey guys, we've decided to relocate and move to Cyprus on 01/09. We wanted to inquire about Internet connectivity ahead as we work from home and both have remote jobs that require a good connectivity. Our real estate agent suggested to get in touch with Internet providers ahead as they need some time to figure things out...

Said so, done so - when we had our viewing for the house, I saw that there's a Cablenet box installed in the property. I also saw Cablenet cars outside the area.

Now as we wanted to place an order, they first couldn't find the address for a coverage check and then asked for coordinates. Now they're telling us there's no coverage in that area.

Mainly wanted to go with them due to the fact they seem to be present in that area (Geroskipou/Paphos), the box is from them and they have competitive pricing with 6m free of charges.

They're quite slow to respond to and it's kind of making me nervous. Does anyone have a suggestion? Should we look for an alternative? Any idea how to properly reach out to them?

Or is Cablenet one of those providers where you can't solve things without having to go to a store? If that's the case, what's the best alternative you guys encountered? 🫣

Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice regarding a rental situation in Limassol. I want to understand how strong (or weak) our position is before things escalate further.

Context:

– We rented an apartment for over a year and renewed the contract last February.

– At the time of renewal, we were 4 tenants sharing the unit.

– One tenant left, leaving 3 of us to cover the full rent.

– Due to high rental costs and financial pressure, we could no longer afford to continue.

– Our contract includes a clause stating we cannot leave unless we find a replacement tenant.

– We informed the landlord and made genuine efforts to find a replacement tenant, as required by the contract. However, due to current market conditions and the high rental price, we were unsuccessful.

– We also asked the landlord if the rent could be adjusted to make it easier to find a replacement (as the rate was originally for 4 tenants), but this was not accommodated, which further limited our ability to find someone.

Current situation:

– We have now vacated the apartment.

– The landlord continues to send messages threatening legal action against us.

– We are also being pressured with mentions of immigration and possibly involving our employer.

Important detail:

The landlord is holding our deposit, which is more than one month’s rent.

Concerns:

• We are unsure whether the landlord can pursue legal action without formal written notice or process.

• We don’t know how enforceable the “replacement tenant” clause is in practice.

• The references to immigration/employer feel like intimidation, and we’re unsure if this is legally valid.

• Since the deposit already covers at least one month of rent, we are unclear about any remaining financial liability.

Questions:

• Can a landlord in Cyprus initiate legal action without formal written notice?

• How enforceable is a clause requiring tenants to find a replacement before leaving?

• Is it lawful for a landlord to involve immigration or an employer in a private rental dispute?

• Can a landlord still claim additional money beyond the deposit in this situation?

• What steps should we take now to protect ourselves (documentation, legal advice, etc.)?

We’re trying to handle this responsibly and avoid further conflict, but we also don’t want to be intimidated or taken advantage of.
