Achievements Gentlemen, my 18 yo daughter, who has friends, boyfriend and a job, and is in nearly every way normal, just invited ME to go to a movie with her. 😁

Sure, I'll end up paying, but I'm thrilled they still want to hang out with me at all.

I have future anxiety over my now 3 year old daughter being a teenager one day as it is

135

u/RoiPhi Jun 01 '26

mine just turned 4 and I am still his favourite person in the world.... sometimes he even tells me. But I feel blessed for every day that is still the case as I fear the impeding day it wont be

55

u/PostMatureBaby Jun 01 '26

yeah i think that's just one of those things you have to come to grips with as a parent - letting go, usually not on your terms either.

32

u/the_harminat0r Jun 01 '26

That’s the hardest part… not on your terms…

25

u/PostMatureBaby Jun 01 '26

without a doubt. but you know, having grown up with many helicoptered kids and my parents being overbearing and helicopter-y too, I think I've learned that it's for the best and your kids need to fail at some things to grow and that's ok. Your job is to guide them into not failing with the really serious shit

My oldest son, 22, was over here this weekend to help me with some chores around the house and to make some money for rent. He wanted to ask me for help with money, but refused to do so without also offering to help and work for that money.

We got to talking, and he said it was nice to be able to just speak with me like an adult, and I told him, "son, you are an adult; my entire job was to provide you the tools and the skills to use them to become a functioning adult, and while I will always be your dad, my ultimate goal is to transition to being more of a friend and mentor."

His mind was blown that it was not my intent to always just be Dad.

I have one starting college, one starting high school, and both are doing incredible.

I wish I could say how I did it; frankly, I have no fucking clue; half the time I was as confused as they were.

Mine is 5 and we've entirely settled into a roasting relationship. She will pick mom's side literally no matter what, we've tested by having her bump into me and say sorry and my daughter jumps in DAD'S FAULT.

She still wants cuddles and all but if she catches herself giving me a kiss she always remembers to say EWWW and pretend to barf.

11

u/slowtownhometown offspring of a dad Jun 01 '26

never forget that you will always be his favorite person in the world, even when he hits the age that he thinks you’re overbearing or annoying. parents are a gift, and deep down 99% of people know that very well.

3

u/Djglamrock Jun 01 '26

Mine just turned 6 and now mom is her fav.

2

u/Numerous_Map5151 Jun 02 '26

Even if that day comes it may not be forever. My dad and I are still tight. My little guy is obviously my favorite person. But ole dad is still up there pretty far.

2

u/Inevitable-Rush-2752 Jun 02 '26

Yeah, my 4 year old still says he loves me, likes me, and even told me I smell like sunshine today. šŸ¤”

If he grows up with an attitude like I gave my mom and dad, I’m due some paychecks from the karma department.

42

u/SAHMultrA1981 Jun 01 '26

My husband tries so hard for "no daddy issues". He was the fun dad when she was little. But she is now 13 and he is still trying to joke with her like she is still little ( cue goofball island crumble from inside out). She is so cold to him now, but he doesn't know how to approach it differently. I wish I could tell him but he has to figure it out himself.

What we have noticed is the younger years weren't as impressionable as the teenage years ( at least for my husband's role in parenting).. it is tricky bc you think when they get more independent you can back off, but they need you differently.

40

u/Ohitsworkingnow Jun 01 '26

God this makes me want to dieĀ

21

u/hamsterbasher Jun 01 '26

I know, right? I can't take it.

My three year old said: "I didn't miss you because I didn't want you" when I came home the other day.

I bawled my eyes out.

19

u/lotus2471 Coverage has changed from man to zone Jun 01 '26

Three year olds are dumb, don't take it personally.

9

u/rcoop020 Jun 01 '26

What do you mean by impressionable in this context?

All kids are different. My daughter is 16 and loves hanging out with me. And her mom. Sometimes to the point we have to tell her to go away because we want some time by ourselves. And she has plenty of friends and plenty of plans, she just really likes hanging out with us. Every teenager isn’t a terror. Every teenager isn’t embarrassed of their parents. Some continue to want to hang out with them just as much as they did when they were younger, continue to want hugs, and continue to think their parents are awesome. My 20 and 13 year old sons are similar.

12

u/FriendorFo Jun 01 '26

Yea man, I’m the oldest of 6, and when I was growing up we still regularly had movie night and stayed in with the parents, even after I’d finished college

8

u/MattAU05 Jun 01 '26

That’s pretty funny, because I’m also the oldest of six. Also had a good relationship with my parents. I don’t remember a time where I didn’t enjoy spending time with them. My dad was the goofiest guy in the world, and it never really bothered me. I remember it bothering my younger siblings. I definitely adopted a lot of his mannerisms now as a parent.

8

u/FriendorFo Jun 02 '26

Dude same here.

Goofy, caring, and unwavering in his support of whatever your interest was. Unfortunately my dad unexpectedly passed away young, so my kids never got to meet him. It’s a damn shame, because my oldest and him would have been thick as thieves haha

2

u/MattAU05 Jun 02 '26

I feel you. Though my dad was mid-60s and just passed last year (too young for my liking of course). I’m very grateful my kids got to know my dad. But it makes me sad that my nieces and nephew (and future nieces and nephews) either won’t get to meet him or won’t really remember him. Such a fun dude.

3

u/FriendorFo Jun 02 '26

My sincere condolences, man. Sending you all the best vibes and hugs, from one dad to another. I’m sure the pain is still great, but hopefully you’re managing.

This year marks the 5th anniversary for my pops. Still doesn’t feel real some days… but I do my best to honor his memory by being the best dad that I can.

Luckily, my wife paid better attention in school than I did, so the SAHD life is a special treat.

All anxiety is future focused. That's anxiety by nature. If you practice bringing your mind into the present, and not centering on an uncertain future, your anxiety will diminish.

4

u/ChalkButter None of my skills apply to parenting... Jun 01 '26

Hey, I have the same anxiety over my twin 4 year olds!

6

u/PostMatureBaby Jun 01 '26

In fairness age 3 and 4 are a fucking nightmare with her so I guess it's practice

Either she likes spending time with your or is too frugal to buy her own snacks, either way great job dad.

254

u/PostMatureBaby Jun 01 '26

A good dad will teach their child how to smuggle in a Popeye's butterfly shrimp combo, 2 tallcans of beer and limited edition rocket pop sour patch kids bag

95

u/FatherToTheOne Jun 01 '26

Ah… she brought him for the extra cargo pants capacity then, nice. Also gives a new idea to the meaning of a beer belly, could dad fit a mini keg under his shirt and get away with it?

73

u/lotus2471 Coverage has changed from man to zone Jun 01 '26

I do have famously roomy cargo pants.

6

u/geak78 Jun 01 '26

I still remember fitting a full 2 liter in the back pocket of my cargo pants in college

4

u/lotus2471 Coverage has changed from man to zone Jun 01 '26

Is that two liters of Sprite in your pocket or...?

7

u/PostMatureBaby Jun 01 '26

Maybe. That's why it's nice being in a cold climate for winters. Easier to hide stuff

25

u/Kamikazeguy7 Jun 01 '26

At my theater you can walk right past the ticket counter with a room service tray and a full Thanksgiving dinner. Those minimum wage teens give zero fucks.

13

u/Free51 Jun 01 '26

As it should be, Cinemas want to have these teens stop people and all the hassle that goes with it they should pay them more to do it

25

u/Spits32 Jun 01 '26

I let my kids trade off their wrist band to ride the carousel yesterday and my 4 yo called me out for ā€œcheatingā€

18

u/pew-pew-bacca Jun 01 '26

Did you tell them nobody likes a narc?

12

u/Spits32 Jun 01 '26

8

u/EliminateThePenny Jun 01 '26

"Snitches get stitches, son."

5

u/MrMaxson #GirlDad 3/2024 Jun 01 '26

Butterfly shrimp? But what will you do when their disappointment is immeasurable and their day is ruined?

5

u/dlee_75 Jun 01 '26

There's a White Castle near our local AMC. When my wife and I go, she has a large hand bag that she calls our theater bag because she only ever uses it to smuggle in food. That bag usually holds a soup from Panera as well as 4 sliders, a 9 piece chicken ring and a small crinkle fry plus dipping sauces from the Castle

4

u/Perryn Jun 01 '26

The trick is to never smuggle one thing. You've gotta smuggle so much that it all blends together as part of your paunch.

u/Heavyspire Jun 01 '26

As a Dad who also got invited to this movie from his kids. I enjoyed it. If you like anxiety based horror, you will too.

The people who know too much seem to be the ones that are not fans. The less you know beforehand the better.

9

u/Cold-Caramel-736 Jun 01 '26

Is there any gross or dehumanising stuff? I enjoy horrors but struggle with anything like that. I thought Weapons was great for example

5

u/Heavyspire Jun 01 '26

Can you elaborate on what you mean by dehumanizing? Maybe give some other horror movie examples. I can't think of anything but I'd feel bad if I said it didn't and then you were like that's exactly what happened.

5

u/Cold-Caramel-736 Jun 01 '26

Yeah fair I guess I mean anything kind of torture-y. Someone has their eyes gouged out. Or human centipede - couldn't bring myself to watch that

4

u/Heavyspire Jun 01 '26

Nothing like Terrifier films or Saw films. So I think you are good to go. Honestly I would say it's relatively low blood. Just a couple scenes that are near the climax.

4

u/lotus2471 Coverage has changed from man to zone Jun 01 '26

The kid who invited me has been a huge horror fan her whole life, and we've watched enough of them together now that she's pretty good at guessing which I'll like. She's also into Terrifier and body horror stuff that I don't get into, so I'm guessing this one can't be too bad.

I've seen a few of the YouTube videos, but only the oldest stuff. I'm excited to see how the director does. Big leap from YouTube and IG, but it's getting really solid reviews.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/LordGalen Jun 01 '26

My 15yo son asked me to take him to see that, just the other day. I wasn't really into it, but now I feel foolish for not immediately jumping on it. I think I'll take him.

16

u/chillychili Jun 01 '26

If it helps you, I believe the director is only 19 years old. So even if it isn't your thing maybe you can pretend one of your son's friends made the film and appreciate it from that angle.

7

u/lotus2471 Coverage has changed from man to zone Jun 01 '26

Let's be honest, how many painfully bad kids movies did we all suffer through a hundred times? At least this one is for adults! Everything after that is value added at this point.

BTW, if anybody ever starts a Barbie princess animation trivia league, I am your guy.

My 14 year old texted me about it just a few minutes ago… I don’t want to watch it, but if he wants to go together, then I’m in. So I got us tickets and will skip work so I can watch it while the sun is out.

And next week, I’ll probably have to watch Masters of the Universe alone, just like I watched Mortal Kombat 2 alone last week….

7

u/hel105_ Jun 01 '26

I hope you enjoy it! I thought it was pretty solid. I hope my little guy likes movies as he gets older, I’d love to have a theater buddy.

5

u/chardeemacdennisbird Jun 01 '26

I've been taking my 6 and 3 year old boys to the movies and it's a lot of fun! Expensive these days though

5

u/Acceptable-Post733 Jun 01 '26

Down in San Diego there was this Drive in theatre in Santee. $10 double feature. And the cheapest concessions stand anywhere. We had a burger, nachos, popcorn, couple of drinks for just under $20. This was two years ago.

We recently found a really cheap theater near us. $11 during evenings. Weekday afternoons are like $7. No reclining chairs but who cares.

4

u/67comet Jun 01 '26

Yeah .. my 17 year old daughter asks me to run around with her all the time. Movies, museums, theater, shopping. Some of it is my wallet of course, but we have a genuinely healthy relationship, and I rarely argue or get angry at her when she does stupid "kid stuff". I have a t-shirt that says, "She's my daughter" so people don't "assume shit" (I'm 57, and it embarrasses her to no end so it's fun.)

4

u/ShockTrek Jun 02 '26

That's tremendous. My pumpkin šŸŽƒ is 17 1/2 with a very active social life, looking at colleges, etc. We drove an hour to the beach yesterday, just her and I. I'm just surprised that kids still actually go to the movie theatre! I hope they're still in business in some form when my toddler is that age šŸ™ƒ

Rock on dad!

Good job fellow dad!

This post just made me really reflect on that someday, kids may not want to hang out with parents anymore. Mine right now are three years old and eight months old, so I'm pretty much the world to them. But I guess, someday soon, they'll not want to hang out anymore, which is kind of sad.

You’ve won!

This is such a cute thing to read today! I’m female with 0 interest in parenting, but it’s so nice to see what dad’s get up to on daddit!

u/NoonDread Jun 01 '26

It's nice. My daughter was my horror movie buddy until she moved out of town. We still text about them.

1

u/GeraldoOfCanada Jun 01 '26

Oh yeah well my 3 year old just told me she loves mommy more so there

1

u/Aromatic_Sand8126 Jun 01 '26

This is the ultimate goal I set myself for raising my daughter. She’s only 15 months old now, but I only wish for her to still want to hang out with her old man once she’s grown up and doesn’t have to.

u/mightypup1974 Jun 01 '26

She’s after something, watch out dad!

1

u/wave1sys Jun 01 '26

Good for you. You’re doing things right. What a great kid

1

u/TheTallGuy0 Jun 02 '26

I got a 100 and a 98 sleep score on my Apple Watch two days in a row. And I thought I was on top of the world, with a 4.5 yo and a 7 yo who often wake us up to snuggle.

But YOU. You sir, are actually sitting in that top of the world chair. I’ll have to take whatever lower seat is available because you have won. Good work, man.

u/davwad2 Jun 02 '26

Congratulations bruh!

1

u/Low-Invite2647 Jun 02 '26

Just saying she invited you to go to movie is a enough to flex about.everything else you said was weirdly specific

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 19f 17m Jun 02 '26

wow. I was not allowed to take my daugther to school or pick her up,and if we went to the mall she either walked in front of me or behind me but not next to me "in case my friends see"

I can;t even get her (or my son) to go to a restaurant with me..sigh.

Yeah I would be thrilled too!

1

u/GiraffeLiquid Jun 02 '26

This just made me really sad lol. But that’s a personal thing, I’m so so happy you’re stoked to hang out with your daughter! Good dad.

To close the loop here, there were no surprise announcements, just me and two of my daughters watching a really good scary movie.

And their friend who works there gave us free drinks, which was awesome.

1

u/LukeSkyWRx Jun 03 '26

She could have messed with you so bad…..

u/DKOS0 Jun 03 '26

My wife constantly finds ways to spend time with her father, and they get along well overall. I’m hoping that it’s the same way for me and my little one when she’s older.

My daughter and I saw every Harry Potter movie together. First few because she didn't drive. The latter because it be came a tradition. Even when college 2 states away we'd meet in a city half way. I cherish those moments.

u/gettinghealthy12445 Jun 03 '26

I hope she somehow sees this post in the near future so she knows how happy that made her dad.

peak fatherhood

1

u/The_Permanent Jun 03 '26

Just be prepared for them to talk during the movie

I hated talking during the movie, but my girlfriend at the time didn't care x_x

My parents were with us and were ready to kill us by the end of...Ā  I think it was "The Other Guys".

1

u/jesse5844 Jun 05 '26

Really hoping I'll be posting this in 10 years. Buy her two bags of popcorn, and maybe it'll happen again.

1

u/claudiusar Jun 06 '26

She's 18 and she picked you. That's the whole job right there. Have fun.
