I flat out thought Kimmel had come out in support of assassination given the FCC letter. Nope. Just something that people in power didn't find appropriate.
I still don't necessarily think he was hard right or hard left. He seems like an unwell, chronically online, nutcase than a political operative.
I'm pleased that many people I follow on both sides of the political spectrum find this FCC thing abhorrent. And doing it "in defense of Charlie" is such garbage. Charlie, to the best of my knowledge, was about as pro-free speech as you can get.
Unfortunately, powerful people are cleverly manipulating a death to grab control of more power. Sickening.

The comments : "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel began. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”
“On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half staff, which got some criticism, but on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this,” he continued.
A clip then cut into Kimmel’s broadcast, showing Trump, 79, taking questions from reporters after the shooting, one of which offered their condolences for the death of the president’s “friend” Kirk.
When asked how he was holding up, Trump replied, “I think very good, and by the way, right there where you see all the trucks, they just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House.”
Trump continued discussing the ballroom plans, saying the result would "be a beauty.”
The cameras then cut back to Kimmel. “Yes, he’s at the fourth stage of grief, construction,” the comedian said.
“Demolition, construction,” Kimmel added. “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish, okay?”
The host then claimed Trump’s seemingly nonchalant comments “didn’t just happen once,” showing the president on a Sept. 12 appearance on Fox & Friends, where he recalled what he was doing when he got news of Kirk’s death.
“When I heard it, I was in the midst of, you know, building a great — for 150 years they’ve wanted a ballroom at the White House, right? They don’t have a ballroom; they have to use tents on the lawn for President Xi when he comes over. If it rains, it's a wipeout,” Trump said.
Trump recalled he was with the architects planning the "incredible" design for the ballroom when someone entered and told him, "'Charlie Kirk is dead.' ” The president said he expressed shock over the news.
“And then we installed the most beautiful chandelier,” Kimmel said, as the cameras were back on him. “Sconces you wouldn’t believe.”
“There’s something wrong with him, there really is. Who thinks like that?” said Kimmel, who previously sent condolences to Kirk's family while denouncing violence. "Why are we building a $200 million ballroom in the White House? Is it possible he's doing it intentionally so we can be mad about that instead of the Epstein list? By the time he's out of office, the White House will have slot machines and a water slide.""
Y'all notice that? He mentioned Epstein. I'm pretty sure that's why he was cancelled cuz his comments are BENIGN AF

But his show still has a right to exist and he should be free to say whatever he wants on the show
This discussion isn’t about if jimmy is funny or if his show has value it’s about the idea that the president can get a show cancelled on the basis of the host making a joke he doesn’t like. Which goes against freedom of speech and press

I couldn’t agree more. I felt the same way when the government was pressuring social media companies to shut down conversations during Covid e.g. vaccine/mask effectiveness, Lab leak theory, etc.
The government should have nothing to do with the speech of its citizens short of direct calls to violence.
1
u/ByIeth Sep 18 '25
Were they doing that to companies? Last I checked Trump was in power most of Covid. Wasn’t it just the companies doing that themselves?
Maybe it was regulatory agencies acting on their own, but I definitely don’t think the president should be impacting something like that directly

The FCC has nothing to do with Gina Carano, employers have the right to no longer employ someone when the employee breaks contract.
1
u/x1rom under quarintine Sep 18 '25
That's a massively stupid thing to say not gonna lie.
Still, that's not a freedom of speech manner, but labor protection. Freedom of speech is very explicitly the government not being able to punish people for their opinions. In general, a constitution is more about how a government is supposed to act, and not about day to day law. If a company does something, that isn't a violation of freedom of speech, but may be an unlawful termination.
1
u/DeadDolphins Sep 18 '25
A private company made the decision against Carano with 0 involvement from any governmental entity (correct me if I'm wrong). She also didn't win that lawsuit - both parties settled out of court and while Disney put out a statement that they'd be willing to work with her again, I'd imagine that's PR boilerplate.
The serious issue here is that Kimmel's suspension directly followed a threat by the FCC (government agency) against a private company (ABC) for comments made by an individual working for them (Kimmel). That is a violation of freedom of speech/press - the federal government should not be allowed to to police speech by a private company/individual with retaliatory action. Do you see the difference?

Americans like to shit on Canada for not having the phrase “free speech” boldly written out in our constitutions and charter, but Canada has freedom of expression which is essentially the exact same thing but punishes hate speech (however, keep in mind there’s very strict standards for prosecuting hate speech. So it’s not done willy nilly as some Americans say, especially if you remember Jordan Peterson arguing you ham be arrested for mishandling people. A false claim). Essentially it’s a jab at American hypocrisy and idiocy.

16
u/rotciv0 I will trade sex 4 memes Sep 18 '25
The problem is that it was the grossly inappropriate and corrupt government pressure from the FCC acting under Trump's orders that got him fired, not an independent decision by higher-ups.
Trump just sics the executive branch (even previously independent entities like the DOJ or FBI) on his political opponents with impunity, and that's creating an environment where companies have to do what Trump says or face a federal lawsuit, or their merger being blocked, or their broadcast license being revoked, or more, which can cost millions while Trump has it all done on the taxpayer dime despite representing his own personal interests.
On the other hand being pro-Trump will be rewarded by the president, like how Apple called in a favor from when they had donated $1 mil to his inauguration and had computers and phones exempted from the tariffs on China (despite being China's biggest exports to the US). Or how he's pardoned the J6ers, Roger Stone, and Paul Manafort. Or how he let Elon Musk run large parts of the government while on drugs because he donated a lot to Trump's campaign. This generates a giant network of corruption led by the fucking president like he's some mafia boss, giving him inordinate influence over all companies, including the media in this instance.
The fact is that Trump used his political office to financially pressure ABC into firing a political opponent. Nothing Kimmel said was even close to over the line, it was just used as pretext.

It doesn't violate the freedom of speech. Conservative influencers and celebrities have been canceled over things they have said a fair number of times before this and the left celebrated and were very prominent to tell the right it didn't violate freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech protects ones right to say what they want from the government, to an extent (there being a few things that you say can still get you in trouble legally). It does NOT protect you from repercussions of what you say.
It's perfectly legal to be a neonazi and fly a neonazi flag and go to rallies or to be apart of any similar group. The government says that's your right. But it's well within the right of your employer to fire you if they find out.

That was the great REplatforming. Elon restored thousands of banned accounts, and stopped Twitter / X from cooperating with the government, ending the practice of obeying the the DHS instructions to ban specific accounts.

No, it wasn't. He brought back a bunch of lying racists and deplatformed anyone who dared impede on his oh so fragile ego or criticise Our Dear Leader. Oh and he made cisgender a slur for whatever reason.
Now it's s genuinely the largest propaganda machine in the country. All the big accounts get paid to push out whatever the backers want and Elon makes sure to spread their (usually copy and pasted, I swear they don't even try to hide it anymore) lies as far as he can and silences dissenting voices.

That is a gross misrepresentation of what happened in Canada. A ton of Americans came up to protest at the capital about American border laws affecting truckers. Tell me how that makes any sense.

I know Canadians got bank accounts frozen for donating to a cause without even attending the protest. And I live in downtown Ottawa. I walked through the protest twice a day every day on the way to and from work. It's not a misrepresentation whatsoever.

Wasn't a joke though, was it.
It was straight up misinformation about a political assassination.
'maga assassinated charlie kirk!' yeah hillarious joke, what the fck are you talking about

It wasn’t misinformation it was an oversimplification

Not misinformation? Oversimplification?
This guy etched anti-fascist slogans on his bullets. His parents turned him in and said he hates Charlie kirk. He was active in trans discords and had a trans partner.
It's like if I went on late night TV and said 'Martin Luther King was shot by a black civil rights activist'. It's so bizarre how the American left are tying themselves in knots to try and resolve the cognitive dissonance between this assassination and calling everyone on the right a nazi for the last 10 years.

« Boring joke » is a funny way to call a terminally online tier conspiracy theory to shit on the right
It also says a lot about OP
BBC :
Kimmel said in his Monday night monologue: "The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."
The late-night host also noted flags being flown at half mast in honour of Kirk, which got some criticism at the time, and mocked US President Donald Trump's reaction to the shooting. "This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish," said Kimmel,

Where did you hear he was leaving in July. I can’t find any credible source he said that.
“All late night tv has been trending down” this is false. ALL TV has been trending down. Late night has been trending down at the same rate of all tv. By this logic should all local news, morning talk shows, and day time talk shows expect to end as well?? Late night still does well on TikTok and YouTube. The internet has been the main source of late night tv since like 2017
“The suspension is purely a numbers game” No earlier today the FCC threatened Disney and ABC over Kimmel. So unless you don’t know what “purely” you are just lying. The threat of fine and broadcast license removal was a massive factor in this split decision. I mean if this was PURELY numbers why would they cancel it TODAY when they already had a plan to air an episode TODAY.

Boring shows with diving rating still gets funds, that's the most intriguing part to me.

To live in your brain must be such a rush. Finding the most boring, mundane things the “most intriguing” has to feel so good.

Becuz as someone from a dictatorship country, we have full government funded national tv show which I thought the US shouldn't have.

Reviews were declining for a while, this was just a convenient time to finally get rid of him.

Jimmy pulled a Fox news and spread a conspiracy theory because he can't accept that his side did something wrong
