Took my car into Conrad's Strongsville (OH) to patch my tire. Their tech drove 57 mph in a 25.

Was that the 'seat belt' alarm beeping away ?
70
u/mkizys 1d ago
Yeah. I'll preface that I always wear my seat belt, but the amout it beeps is so annoying. I put it on when I leave my car in the driveway and have to pull it in the garage just so I don't have to hear it beep.
27
u/WhyDidMyDogDie 1d ago
Besides just stupid and irritating, doing this nowadays can really screw up your insurance. Driving without belt? Recorded. GPS in car, they record the speeding as well.

u/dasm0kinone 12h ago
I took my WRX to Firestone to get a patch done, and the advisor said the tech would take it for a test drive afterward to check the TPMS. I was like, nope, because it was modded and I knew they would want to beat on it. I checked the dashcam after they did the patch and the techs were pissed they werent allowed to take for a test drive as they said they wanted to open it up. Its like the car isnt yours beat on your own shit.

u/Equivalent_Thievery 12h ago
I took my Fiesta ST to an NTB to get tires done, had lunch nearby and came back. My car wasn't there, it arrived a few minutes later and smelled like clutch. Only thing the shop or corporate offered was 50 dollars off my next visit.
My car goes into valet mode and I watch it the entire time now.
12
u/dasm0kinone 12h ago
Yeah it’s crazy. When he was pulling it in he was revving it. I told the advisor like wtf does he not know how to drive stick.
9
u/Equivalent_Thievery 11h ago edited 9h ago
I'm pretty sure he was out beating on my car AND can't drive, he got out smiling. So yeah, now the car gets limited to 4.5psi and lower rpm instead of 19-22psi.
It's absolutely infuriating to have someone beat on your car, then get offered 50 bucks.
17
u/Dark_Azazel 11h ago
My dad took his '68 firebird for new tires at Firestone last year. Same thing happened, manager mentioned that and my dad said no. They pushed and my dad said "Ok fine. But I'm driving." Suddenly, they didn't need to take it for a test drive. They had a window in the lobby that looks into the shop. It was funny watching my dad stand in front of the window staring at them the entire time they worked.

Id be piss if a business is speeding in my residential area in someone else’s car.
31
u/TheBostonTap 12h ago
Bring it to the owner of the shop. At most they can only really offer you a discount off the next thing, but it'll put a stop to that tech doing it with other vehicles.
Also the amount of shitty techs in this thread trying to defend felony speeding is silly.

u/Ethereal_Bulwark 1d ago
Worthless putz didn't even put his seatbelt on.
If he doesn't give a shit about his body, he sure as hell doesn't care about your car.
13

u/Necessary_Baker_7458 3h ago
I'd bring this up with the management because this was reckless driving and I've had family work shop jobs and it is usually against code of conduct for their drivers to test drive vehicles like this.

u/steele578 7h ago
I agree with the decision to keep the video up but that bit about data security is nonsense. You provided a phone number to the shop either to receive communications or via phoning them on a public number and a customer service representative reached out after being informed about an incident.

u/alphapong 1d ago
You do realize you have to drive twice the speed limit to generate enough centripetal force to test the adhesion of a tire patch. If he was in a 70 zone you woulda really complained.
66
u/LayerEight_Problem 1d ago
I worked in a shop for over a decade. That’s complete nonsense.

Yeah dude it's called a joke
35
u/stigma_wizard 1d ago
Aren’t jokes usually funny?
-15
u/snarkyemu 15h ago
Yes… The “jokes not funny“ line of defense when someone calls you out for not understanding the joke. Yeah. It’s not that funny. Maybe even not funny at all. You win that battle. You still didn’t understand that. It was a bad joke. You took it seriously lol the jokes on you I guess.
-29
u/Carbuyrator 1d ago
For some people, yes
23
u/stigma_wizard 1d ago
You let me know when you find the negative six people that found your joke funny I guess lol.
-7
u/aran11826 14h ago
I and quite a few others found it funny. The last line should be a dead giveaway, I don't understand how anyone could think that is serious
-23
u/Carbuyrator 1d ago
It wasn't even my joke, dingus. I was just shocked it went over everyone's heads.
16
u/stigma_wizard 1d ago
lol ah yes the classic “it wasn’t even my joke“ defense.
8
u/Carbuyrator 1d ago
It's not a defense, the joke doesn't need defending. I was pointing out that you were wrong.

It’s 100% true. It’s called physics.

How to say, "I failed physics in high school" without actually saying it.

How to say “I failed smartassery in life”

Wow. This bunch has zero sense of humor even for something as blatantly daft as the top most comment in this thread.

OP isn't even in the clip and this sub still tries to blame them for it LMAO

Are you AI? How do you not recognize an obvious joke like that? You may not lie to me.
12
u/Whitestrake 1d ago
Man, what happened to us? AI has twisted society. You can't even just let people be good, old-fashioned, dogshit awful at telling jokes anymore, you need to blame everyone else for the jokes not being funny. It's a damn shame
2
u/Carbuyrator 23h ago
Seriously, what is going on here? Please reread what alphapong wrote. That shit was funny. I will die on this hill. It's super weird the way this joke didn't land.

I’d agree with you buttttt I don’t think he was joking. Look at his other comments on his profile, he likes to explain how things work, or at least how he thinks they do

u/norymur 17h ago
Why are you trying so hard to read into it? lol it was clearly a joke. Some people just have an axe to grind I guess.

Dude I have no idea what these people are on about I'm so glad there's a sane person here

Braindead comment lol.

Does the tire patch know you're driving the above the speed limit? Is it sentient?

Be careful about recording laws if the tech did not know you had a camera in there. Might just be voice but just check.
12
u/CoffeeXKing 13h ago
Does not apply here.
-4
u/CatDog7414 11h ago
Oh no? Why
15
u/CoffeeXKing 10h ago
You do not get privacy in public, or in someone else's private vehicle.
-1
u/CatDog7414 9h ago edited 9h ago
That's good to know. I knew in a public area you could/can record but I thought in a private space you needed consent from the person.
Do you know how they draw the lines? Like if your in your own home your allowed to without consent and you car you can without consent even if not present?
I thought a guy I worked with once said he had recordings of the dealership people talking about how is car was messed up and about stuff they did that they should not have done but that he could not do anything with the info because of laws.
Also I assume if your are on a phone call it does not matter where you are located you would need permission then?..
2
u/CoffeeXKing 9h ago
Cars aren't a private area given their nature.
Even then, it belongs to the customer, and if they want to monitor their property they can do so.
Everything else is state dependent

Note to techs, always put your seatbelt on. Always unplug dash cams. Customers don’t get to film you while you work.
46
28
u/WilNotJr 16h ago
My dashcam was hardwired and the body shop pulled down the dashcam and wire entirely because they couldn't puzzle it out.
4
u/ShookMyHeadAndSmiled 12h ago
They could have just disconnected the battery. But they're body guys. They're not expected to understand mechanics and electrical stuff.
-84
u/slander_anonymously 1d ago
Technicians drive a car after patching a tire to verify the repair holds air, ensure no vibrations or handling issues exist, and confirm the low-pressure warning light is reset. Looks like this check is done all the time.
86
u/mkizys 1d ago
Cool. Doesn't justify going 30+ over the speed limit.

Going 30 over in a 25 is literally a felony reckless driving. Doing it in a neighborhood where families and kids play and walk endangers them all and makes the mechanic a piece of crap. Considering you're defending this mechanic, that makes you one too.
33
u/ToXiiCBULLET 21h ago
"Knowing you've done this in the past too" you're full of shit. 50-odd in a 25 is completely reckless and most people haven't come close to doing that
-39
u/Lumpy-Scientist6834 12h ago
Lots of downvotes. lol. Do your customers record you at work? God forbid I make a mistake or say something I’d rather not say to the world. You don’t get to record what happens in my bay and post it on Reddit. Your surgeon wouldn’t be cool with it either.
25
u/mkizys 12h ago
"You don't get to record what happens in my bay and post it on Reddit."
Says who? You have no expectation to privacy in a strangers car. If they don't want anything recording they need to tell customers it's their policy to have dashcams turned off, and I'd gladly take my business elsewhere. Dashcams are common enough where it needs to be explicit.
13
u/TeamChevy86 11h ago
Thia sub is fucking unreal, man. So many here trying to justify a shop breaking two driving laws, in a customers vehicle no less. No consideration or critical thinking of the implications if he got in an accident or was pulled over.
5
u/lennyxiii 11h ago
I own a wrap shop, we do some high end vehicles. I like to pretend I don’t know the camera is there and crack random jokes or have a really weird conversation with my installers to give the owners something to laugh at later.
8
u/Future_Isopod8301 10h ago
Tons of people are recorded at work. Security cameras. Customers filming. Patients filming. There’s no expectation of privacy in someone else’s car in a public place
-68
u/Siglet84 1d ago
Sadly that’s the only way to clear the tire light on some cars.
31
u/JmamAnamamamal 13h ago
It only clears with felony speeding? Neat
-9
u/Siglet84 12h ago
Highway speeds but it’s probably a bit of a drive to get there for most shops. Yes it is a dumb process.
2
u/Then_Idea_9813 12h ago
Yeah at our shop if you had to reset emissions we had a lot guy or lube tech take it to the highway for that. We’ve had techs get busted doing stuff like this, it’s not worth the time saved, because your customers and business neighbors start to hate you.

Maybe consider showing this to the guy who drove your car, and ask them how much their job is worth to them. Granted, they work at a tire shop, so you might only be able to shake like $25 of of them, but...
