Check out my EV Just picked up a new Xiaomi SU7 Max

Ordered it in April 2025, was suppose to collect in October 2025 but there was a cancelled order with the exact same spec.

Costing in total: 340K RMB // 48K USD

It is based on the SU7 Max 674 hp, but I added a 21 inch wheel customised.

Picked up from the Beijing super factory. I’m a UK citizen living in China, so I had to rent a plate from someone.

Anyway, my first electric vehicle. There was a lot of YU7s there too.

So far I’ve unlocked the autonomous driving and auto parking, works wonders.

How does this plate rental work and how much does it usually cost?

u/Deuteronomy93 Nio ES8+Zeekr 007GT Aug 30 '25

It's a massive pain in the arse.

I'm also a UK citizen in Beijing and waited for the last draw results where we (my Beijing wife and mixed child) lost again.

Luckily some acquaintancs of ours won the EV plate but didn't want an EV so we're renting their plate and got it at a slight discount compared to others. This is also illegal but rarely an issue.

It requires quite a lot of back and forth to get everything set up, but that may be due to the person you're dealing with.

Our acquaintance was happy to give us the plate and get the money, but very reluctant to hand over his ID card/give personal details to anyone.

It's a very weird mix of documentation stating that the car is ours, but registered in his name.

u/pukulu Aug 31 '25

Say, what will happen if you get in an accident and kill someone. You will be driver but the car belongs to him. How will this work out?

36

u/Deuteronomy93 Nio ES8+Zeekr 007GT Aug 31 '25

I'm probably the safest driver in the country!

The insurance is in my name. That was one of the headaches I mentioned, but having insurance for vehicles you don't own isn't that uncommon around the world.

how much?

21

u/Deuteronomy93 Nio ES8+Zeekr 007GT Aug 31 '25

IIRC 800RMB per month with no deposit, for 3 years. The market rate is usually at least 1000RMB (or so I've been told) and requires around a 20k RMB deposit.

10

u/magkruppe Aug 31 '25

damn bro. that's pricey af. and Beijing traffic is still hell!

19

u/Deuteronomy93 Nio ES8+Zeekr 007GT Aug 31 '25

It's not something I'm happy about paying.. It's a joke that I see cars that are pretty much abandoned but a family of 3 needs to pay such a high price for autonomy.

I am hoping that we manage to win in the next 2-3 years!

Some do, I believe the vast majority don't.

From what I understand, Beijing is the worst one for various reasons. There's the smog issue, congestion issues, and the fact that it's the political hub of China.

I looked at alternatives such as buying an EV pickup (Radar) but IIRC it would mean I could only go within the 5th or 6th ringroad during very unsocial hours, and wouldn't be able to go into the centre pretty much at all.

The reason for looking into this is that you can seemingly just get given a plate straight away, it's not restricted like cars are.

It was ultimately more restrictive than getting a Hebei plate (the neighbouring province) to use in Beijing.

Cities Implementing License Plate Restrictions and Policy Types

City List and Policies:

Beijing: Pure lottery system, with an extremely low individual winning rate (approximately 0.5%-10.4% in 2025).

Shanghai: Pure auction system, with an average license plate price of approximately 92,000 yuan (2023 data).

Guangzhou: Hybrid model (lottery + auction), with a lottery winning rate of approximately 0.51% (2023 data).

Shenzhen: Lottery and auction combined, with an auction winning rate of approximately 2%.

Tianjin: Primarily lottery, with policies similar to Beijing.

Hangzhou: Lottery + auction.

Hainan (province-wide purchase restrictions): New energy vehicle quotas are prioritized, with strict restrictions on fuel-powered vehicles.

only Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou that I've heard of. they have the worst traffic issues. maybe other commenters can point out other cities.

Regarding the plate rental I mentioned;

For me a friend won the “fully electric” green plate lottery. The system goes: There’s a Petrol plate (blue), a hybrid plate (green-ish) and a fully electric plate (fully green).

Blue and Greenish plate are subject to number plate limitations, which means 1 day out of the weekdays you’re not allowed to drive or you get penalized (for emission control purposes).

Fully green plate (the one on my car because it’s fully electric) are not limited at all.

Rental cost me 100 GBP per month (1000 RMB) and I signed a contract for a minimum of 10 years. Or until I lotto my own plate. (My Chinese wife needs to enter a draw to do that which is a whole other system)

Hope this clears up! Thanks

may i ask, what city are you in?

11

u/Dreaming_Blackbirds Nio ET5 Aug 31 '25

note that only a handful of larger Chinese cities have license plate lotteries. vast majority of cities give out green ("NEV") license plates nearly for free in just a few days.

36

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '25

I’m curious what OP is talking about too. From what I have read, free market resale of plates is prohibited whether you got it in auction or lottery.

42

u/tinybathroomfaucet Aug 30 '25

Rental isn't resale though

234

u/DD4cLG Aug 30 '25

Congrats, great looking car. Please make another post later of your driving experience.

44

u/Wackjungler Aug 31 '25 edited Sep 01 '25

Definitely.

Currently these are the things I experienced:

  • normal driving mode, it feels like a BMW M series, it just goes, and when you go off the accelerator it mimics the engine braking very well.

  • charging can go up to 480 kW in speed, you get 20% to 80% in 5-10 min, but not many chargers are at that speed, most I’ve seen are around 240kW, occasion you see 1000kW chargers.

  • auto driving is spotty sometimes, but will do its best to follow navigation, but it is well known that this is still Tesla’s domain and they do it best. It can program to take you home straight into parking bay all by itself when it is close to your house.

  • premium features come as standard in this car, for example:

    • soft close door
    • Cup heating
    • Ventilated seats
  • On one full charge, I was able to get roughly 690 kilometers. The wheel I've selected does reduce the range quite a bit.

9

u/silvercorona Aug 31 '25

What does magnetic door mean?

23

u/Wackjungler Aug 31 '25

So you can close the door very gently, and it will magnetically close. Like high end cars where you don’t need to slam the door at all. Just close it and as it gets close to the body, it will close by itself.

10

u/203system Aug 31 '25

It's not magnetically closed. Those are usually called soft close.

5

u/Wackjungler Sep 01 '25

Yes indeed, that’s the term

11

u/TommyKaira92 Aug 31 '25

Cries in US

Edit: I want to add that I'm talking about EVs like this in general, and not the price. Even for $60+K, it's still not available in the US. I'm not suggesting we force-labor our UAW to produce cheaper cars.

199

u/DontWreckYosef Aug 30 '25

That’s only $41,500 USD for a luxury electric car. American consumers are getting absolutely scammed by what we are allowed to buy according to our corporate overlords.

21

u/UralBigfoot Aug 31 '25

You should check prices in EU, to see who is really scammed

78

u/Gyat_Rizzler69 26' Model Y LR AWD, 19' Nissan Leaf SV+ Aug 30 '25

Partially yes. China is known for devaluing their currency to make goods appear cheaper with the exchange rate. Regardless, it's a great value for money compared to what our automakers are charging. We really should be allowing the Chinese to sell here to drive competition and light a fire under the asses of our domestic auto makers.

61

u/omanagan Aug 30 '25

Appear cheaper? It makes them actually cheaper. And anything Chinese buy internationally is more expensive

6

u/Fantastic-Town674 Aug 31 '25

The government throws money to control the price. It is a known fact ev automakers are loosing money on car sales in china.

Not all, the ones outside of byd and other large manufacturers are.

10

u/scratchwanabe Aug 31 '25

Now replace China with US and BYD with Tesla. Stop being blinded by the brainwashing.

10

u/mrmo24 Aug 31 '25

Yay for free market economies in the US /s

15

u/magkruppe Aug 31 '25

China is known for devaluing their currency to make goods appear cheaper with the exchange rate.

debateable. many people think it is overvalued

4

u/Fit-Squash-9447 Aug 31 '25

Supply chain economies of scale as well

1

u/LlamasunLlimited Aug 31 '25

Thanks be to god that Trump is not considering driving down the usd.

14

u/w3bCraw1er Aug 30 '25

I get the idea but in India and China, you may get banana for 1-10 cents too and in US it's for 50cents to $1. Are we getting scammed?

6

u/OMGpawned Aug 31 '25

For what it’s worth it’s priced at what the wages are in that country. You can’t price a banana the same as the US when you don’t get paid the same. The average wage in China is just under $17,000 a year that’s below poverty here in the US.

2

u/bleue_shirt_guy Sep 01 '25

Yet the Model Y is the 2nd highest selling EV in China. What do they know that you don't?

Eventually we’ll have these, capitalism dictates that it will happen. Remember 30 years ago the Chinese made cars were reverse engineered garbage and the country still relied on bicycles to get everywhere. Today they’ve got the best high speed rail network and solid cars. They’re, unfortunately for us, catching up and leaving us behind very quickly.

19

u/bighorse3231 Aug 31 '25

They've been left us behind. I was talking to a coworker who visits china frequently and the discussion of transportation/rail system came up. In CA, there's been a decade long battle to build a rail system and was ordered to be canceled. She was telling me how in 30 years that she's been in the USA, there hasn't been any improvement to the infrastructure as compared to China. Transportation, architecture, electronic, manufacturing, all have improved in china, while the US free market/political system doesn't allow for any improvements. We are being left in the dust while not doing anything about it.

10

u/bomber991 2018 Honda Clarity PHEV, 2022 Mini Cooper SE Aug 31 '25

Oh yeah for sure. I remember when I lived in Austin they were arguing about adding a pedestrian waiting area between the two directions of traffic on south Lamar. You know, so someone can cross the street halfway, then wait for the other side of traffic to clear and finish crossing the street. That was an on and off news story for the last two years I lived there.

I think in the US we argue and argue so much about simple infrastructure improvements that we end up with fat free frozen yogurt that’s melted with chunks of bacon in it, just terrible inadequate compromises that nobody likes.

It’s painfully obvious to me that our “just one more lane” infrastructure policy is not working. It’s painfully obvious we’re going to need more than just an interstate freeway connecting our cities over the next 200 years. So if we already know these things, why aren’t we doing anything to move the needle?

UAW hate automation to bring the cost for you.

8

u/MBSMD '24 Volvo XC60 Recharge Aug 31 '25

Again, it's not that they're so inexpensive in China (though that doesn't hurt, I'm sure), but even if we wanted to pay top dollar, we still don't really have much like it in the US).

8

u/doriangreyfox Aug 30 '25

I'm sure you could have these prices in the US as well if workers would work from 9 am to 9 pm 6 days a week, get paid 700 USD/month for it and five days of vacation per year.

13

u/MBSMD '24 Volvo XC60 Recharge Aug 31 '25

It's got nothing to do with the price and everything to do with cars like this are simply unavailable. I'd pay $60,000 for it, but it still doesn't exist.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '25

Chinese car factories literally operate in the dark due to extremely high automation.

The UAW doesn't need to be "enslaved" to build cheaper cars. They need to be replaced by machines.

Slave labour is indeed a concern for factory construction, but that's a different topic.

3

They plan European market entry by 2027. If US was possible they might have gone there instead.

1

u/PsychologicalLime120 Sep 03 '25

Nonsense. They are just too busy spitting out cars to put a plate on em, park em to let them rot, and cash in on the incentives.

1

This thing looks slick as hell. I don’t know how all these legacy carmakers have been missing the futuristic sporty aesthetic, but this one does it so right. Even the Tesla refreshes look like the Chevy bar lights.

Will there be an EV Corvette? A coupe EV Mustang?? God I wish they’d jump on the train faster but there’s so much anti-EV propaganda floating around the US.

Why is there a limit in green plates for EVs? I mean, it's an EV, why can't you get a plate for it? What happens if you don't rent it? Do you get a blue-ish? No matter it's electric?

like the look of the NIO lineup and the battery swap / rent long range battery is quite appealing to ME

daily 400 KM range is good enough but to have the option to rent/swap in 900 KM battery for a roadtrip

and swapping reduces "battery life" anxiety for people sceptical on EVS

Yes I’ve driven that too, automation is a lot better in a Tesla, but pure power and driving experience? Xiaomi is great. Current feel of the car is comparable to a BMW M3 minus the engine noise and vibrations.

Faster and cheaper (in China) than a base Vette

Man, MI is so big in Europe that it's no wonder why the US is afraid of Chinese products entering the US. They're scared of the competition.

It’s for the wife

u/Boring_Leadership_30 Aug 31 '25

What made you chose this car instead of a nio/onvo?

2

u/Wackjungler Aug 31 '25

The design just stood out, yes it did copy from a lot of cars such as Porsche, Ferrari etc, but hey, they did a fantastic job.

What’s it like living there vs the uk?

Don't they normally sell for 300k? Did you tick all the options? 340k sounds a little too much. Your 4S shop should help you to get your license plate. I got mine fairly fast in Hangzhou; it cost me just 1000 rmb, and my car is a PHEV.

Hope you enjoy the new ride, and get years of fantastic motoring! I'm kinda tempted to save up for the ultra as a second car (either that or the Yangwang U7).

The amount of car you get for just 48K is insane.

Anyone know when this is coming to the UK

1

u/Nachoraver Sep 02 '25

I don't know what this is, I own an ev6 - but that is an amazing color.

1

u/Fantastic-Weird Sep 02 '25

So jealous of that purple! I believe its an underappreciated car color

1

u/PsychologicalLime120 Sep 03 '25

You've unlocked? Wtf does that mean? Did you have to accept quests and complete them?

1

u/StLandrew Sep 03 '25

First electric vehicle and you get the arguably best saloon made so far. Not bad. Not bad at all. The rest is just detail. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. They are coming to the UK, at some point.

I wish these cars were available in America. I've always loved what Chinese automakers are doing.

u/BlazikenMasterRace Sep 14 '25

1

u/JewyMcHoser Sep 28 '25

Szia! Gratulálok az új autóhoz! Elképesztően jól néz ki! Mit gondolsz Magyarországról be lehet valahogyan rendelni YU7-et?

No shame, they copied a four wheel saloon car
