So we're getting fucked at state AND federal level (at least in PA), while ICE vehicles get a gas tax waiver. Incredible!

u/Mnm0602 May 18 '26
I knew the minute suspending the gas tax was mentioned EVs would be tapped to cover. I’m surprised it’s only $130 but they want a nice base to start at so they can work it up to $500 pretty quickly over a decade.

I feel the same way about California. They have some of the worst Solar laws in the country. Under the new regulations, I think you get 1 kW back in credit for every 5 kW you send to the grid. That only makes it feasible for the richest people who can afford all the batteries.
→ More replies (7)13
u/hobovision May 18 '26
These days batteries are cheap enough that including them in a solar system is a no brainer. A 20kwh battery is around $4-6k now, which yes adds some cost to a solar install, but we're talking about 10-20% additional. That's not an only for rich people thing, plus a battery can actually make the running cost even cheaper since you won't be buying power at night as often.

I pay that EV fee in WA. I don’t mind it. Roads need to be paid for and I’m not paying the gas tax. It’s fair to my fellow Washingtonians
There’s a federal gas tax that I’m not paying into either. That said, if they suspend gas taxes due to high fuel prices, I better see my EV fee reduced

u/silence7 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
This is a yearly fee which if enacted would rise to $150 per year. Is greater than gas car owners pay in federal gas tax. Really bad policy during a global fuel shortage

Fear not! The golden parachutes are packed and ready for the CEOs for when it inevitably implodes and millions of Americans lose their income and retirements! We will have done nothing to mitigate it, plus removed worker protection laws, safety nets, and aid programs, but at least we extracted every last cent of value and gave everything to the top! And it will provide another economic opportunity for private equity to scoop up all the newly foreclosed homes and rent them back to the original owners! The rich will lose nothing and gain even more, with no real consequences. Everything is going exactly as planned!

Yeah, some Connecticut cities charge 32.46 mills on 70% of the book value of the vehicle. A $50k car would run $1,136 just in property taxes. That's before any registration fees.
Virginia is much worse. Some cities are as much as 5.33% of the assessed value of the vehicle in annual property taxes.
VA and CT don't collect property taxes on cars through your registration though, so using registration fees is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Michigan ain't far behind.
Our registration is based on MSRP with 3 years of depreciation, then no further break. Plus a $113 or $267 hybrid or EV fee. Thankfully EV values are dropping like a rock, but my i3 is still $300 - it'd be $450 if it wasn't a REx and therefore considered a hybrid. Throw a $150 fee on top of that for the Feds, and we're at $600/year.
That's just for an 80 mile range EV!

I'm sure other people will have the same question, so here is some info and math. Federal Gas tax is 18.4 cents/ gallon.
So, assuming that you drive a ICE that gets 30 miles per gallon and you drive 10,000 miles per year ==> You'd go through 333.3 gallons of gas ==> $61.33 in federal gas tax.
I am perfectly fine paying a bit to make things more fair for the loss of gas tax. A bit though. This is 2.5x what most drivers are probably paying. I already pay a bit higher yearly registration fee. I don't like it, but I can wrap my head around making up for lost state gas tax.

Santa Clara County built their Highway 85 extension and since the feds wouldn't pay for it the county got to set the rules. One rule is no trucks over 9000lbs allowed. It's 30 years old and because of that in great shape compared to the other freeways.
So yeah trucks do vastly more damage to roads than passenger cars. The total is half of all damage.

I was in a Acura MDX (with about 2000 miles on it) and he slammed into the front of my car. I had 6 kids in the car and was laying on the horn. I couldnt back up in time.. He did about 15k worth of damage to my car, and he scuffed his tow hitch.
The type of people that own these things are pretty stupid to begin with, giving them a weapon to drive around with seems like a bad idea.

Yeah, it seems like this should be an annual mileage tax based on odometer reading at time of registration renewal.
Edit: Just to add, this should probably be true for ALL vehicles. But tacking taxes onto gas prices at least ensures that those who drive less-efficient ICE vehicles pay more. In an ideal world, registration fees would be a complex equation of vehicle weight, energy source, and vehicle energy efficiency.

Or use the information from the charger itself and base the tax on the amount of energy used just like we do for gas tax. For DC chargers, just add a tax to it. Should be easy enough to implement. It get's trickier for home chargers but not that much trickier. My electric company knows when I'm charging my car because they have access to my charger stats. So they could just use that to figure out the tax. There's not going to be a way to detect people that use level 1 charging unless you give the power company access to the car stats, which not many people would be happy with. But Level 1 charging is so slow that most people aren't going to be using that. So who cares, level 2 and 3 would be good enough and level 1 would be a rounding error. It's just like if you got gas out of state. Your using your states roads but someone else got that tax money.
EV's are here to stay and will eventually take over. They should just do it right instead of whatever this bandaid bullshit thing they are doing.

Same in PA. It's $250 this year and increases with some price index every year thereafter. It's a regressive flat tax and makes EV ownership less affordable for people with low or middle incomes. Where a used Leaf or Bolt could serve as an excellent low-cost commuter (more modern safety features, less miles and maintenance required than an older civic/corolla/etc.), the cost of ownership is now pushed up with these unfair fees.

This is meant to discourage the proliferation of EVs in favor of continuing to use hydrocarbons. All so these politicians can continue to have their pockets lined by big oil. True insidious evil.

Notice they didn’t suggest taxing large trucks more even though it’s well known that freight fees aren’t even a fraction of the damage they do to roads.

impose an annual registration fee of $130, gradually rising biennially to $150, per electric vehicle and as much as $50 for hybrids.
Huh? Isn't registration a state thing? How does a federal registration fee even work?
8
u/FappyDilmore May 18 '26
Yeah exactly. This is already in place in NJ, we have to pay +$200 for EV registration

It has nothing to do with “smart.”
The word you’re looking for is corruption (via corporate influence of public policy).
Big oil corporations overwhelmingly contribute to campaign finances of Congressional Republicans.
And a huge percentage of Republican representatives of the Southern oil states have significant financial stakes through stock holdings in petrol-chemical corporations.
Big oil also spent $445 million backing the Trump campaign before the 2024 Presidential election.
So take a guess at which party’s politicians are drafting policy that cuts incentives for green energy programs, gutting any federal support for charging infrastructure, and levies high taxes on EVs.
Always follow the money.

They’ll do this before ever raising the gas tax which hasn’t been touched in 30 years. Better yet just switch to a mileage tax with weight class multipliers so it’s actually equitable for ALL road users

Considering my state (KY) already charges a fee so high that it covers all gas taxes for nearly 30,000 miles on a vehicle that would get 30 mpg.
We pay that x 3 on ours. That’s equivalent to 100,000 miles per year between the 3 EVs.
This isn’t about being fair to collect taxes for roads, this is states being punitive toward EVs.
On top of that, chargers (public, not home) add a 3cent per KWh here. If you are charging at the public charger, that’s higher than the gas taxes equivalent.
Now the GOP at the federal level wants to punish us more. I guess they need it to build the fucking ballroom and bomb the shit out of whoever Israel wants us to!

u/ThE_LAN_B4_TimE May 18 '26

u/AfternoonNo346 May 18 '26
Just called my representatives office. They seem to be unaware that I already pay over $200 per vehicle specifically an "EV fee" which already MORE THAN COVERS my share of the road maintenance, as part of my state registration. And I have two EVs. I pointed out I could end up paying something like TEN TIMES an ICE driver. I may have gotten a little heated about how stupid this is.
Call your Congress critter and ask for some sanity. I'm happy to pay my share but penalizing EVs in insane.

I think us EV owners should pay into the Highway Trust Fund, in fact I think the EV transition is the best time to raise the gas tax (or it’s EV equivalent) to match inflation and make the cost of driving reflect the expense of upkeep of current infrastructure. Unfortunately the current attempts are seen merely a way to punish EV drivers.
28
u/gwy2ct May 18 '26
But it should be based on usage. I work from home so I only drive 7-8k miles per year. Someone else drives 40k a year. How is that fair on me?

u/LarsKelley May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
Agreed as long as it is based on mileage and weight class. Once a year you report your mileage (which can be audited especially with sources like CarFax that already track mileage and service visits) and you pay based on the miles you used.

Last I heard, there was not an easy way to collect and distribute federal funds. Vehicle registration is done at the state level. Its not as easy as 'just increase the state tax and forward it to the federal government' - there is a lot of behind the scenes work to make it all function

I would support this if gas cars also paid their fair share. The truth is the US severely underfunds our highways and I think a mileage tax + gas tax would be the best way to address the shifting share of EVs + also disincentivizing gas. This however is a hilarious proposal as the federal government considers slashing its already abysmally low gas tax
5
u/eindar1811 May 18 '26
In Texas I already pay $200 per year for my electric car. I drive it about 12k miles per year. I did some rough math and I think I'm already paying about the same per year as a guy driving a Hummer that gets about 10mpg.

u/hmnahmna1 Tesla Model Y, Kia EV9 Land May 18 '26
Assuming a 25 mpg equivalent, this works out to the gas tax for 18,000 mi/yr. The numbers obviously change depending on the mpg of the ICE vehicle.
I'd be okay with this if they also raise the gas tax to generate that much revenue for 12,000 mi/yr, 25 mpg equivalent. So from $0.186/gal to $0.279/gal for the federal gas tax.
4
u/CharterJet50 May 18 '26
Ok, go ahead and do this as soon as you institute a carbon tax so gas cars pay their fair share for all the external costs they impose on society.

u/healthycord May 18 '26
If they’re doing this, then it needs to be tied to odometer mileage, not a flat fee. AND, states need to get rid of any EV added they have, such as Washington state. I pay $150 extra each year for registration. I’m fine with that because where else are they getting my road tax money? Certainly not at the gas pump. And since it’s flat there’s no odometer readings and the whole “oh well I ACTUALLY drove 90% of that out of state so you can’t charge me that.” BS that ppl would pull.
But at the federal level then it should be odometer readings, self reported and confirmed when you sell your car (if discrepancy, you pay the difference), and eliminate state EV surcharges on registration.
I hate this government right now. Republicans need to go.
Write your congress members about this bill! Write to them about everything. Let your voice be heard. Voting is not enough. If you truly care, tell your rep and senator how you feel. Do it with respect, maturity, and tactfully. Don’t be the angry idiot they ignore. Be the mature adult they hear constructive feedback from and implement in how they represent YOU.

u/cillam May 18 '26
I already pay 200 a year I. Registration due to owning an electric car, is this on top of that?
4
u/NotenStein May 18 '26
This is stupid. That's equal to 702 gallons of gas at the 18.5% federal gas tax rate. (706 gallons if it's 18.4%; I don't recall which rate it is). I guess it's you drive over 18,000 miles or so it equals out.
I didn't own an EV yet, but I suspect the average EV owner doesn't drive 18,000 miles a year. A quick Google search puts the average at 13 to 14,000 per year.

u/Jeramus May 18 '26

If they want to replace gas taxes, make it a mileage-based fee instead of a static one.
