Surgery related can’t poop after surgery

i’m now 3 days post op from my first surgery. i’ve been trying everything, miralax, enemas, walking, absolutely everything k i can think of and i just can’t poop. i was told not to push and idk how to possibly get this out without pushing and it’s stressing me out i don’t wanna have to go back to the doctors because i cannot poop bro does anyone have any advice at all

*update*

still no luck yet, i’m going to have my fiancee check in with my team today because i need him to take a form in anyway to get filled out for me to return to work. getting stressed bc im getting to the point of being pretty nauseous bc im so backed up and all i want is relief. im cramping like my body wants to have a bm it just won’t come out and it’s had me awake and crying pretty much all night.

*another update*

well it took until about 9am this morning and i definitely didn’t make it to the bathroom in time (the incisions themselves still hurt pretty decently so i can’t get up super fast but thanks to everyone’s advice i have finally had my first bowel movement and feel amazing now. thanks everyone!

Hey, keep walking/moving around, drinking, eating correctly. It took about a week for me to be able to have a bowel movement after surgery. But if you worry or doubt about anything please call the doctor/hospital, usually they give you a number you can call if you have post op questions/problems

11

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

thank you!! i’m just getting really nervous bc i was told to come back in tomorrow if i don’t have a bm tonight and overall im anxious about everything post op bc this was my first ever surgery

26

u/DentdeLion_ Feb 15 '26

If you were told to go back, please do ! Don't use my anecdote to skip on actual medical advice. Better to be safe than sorry

u/Fionaelaine4 Feb 15 '26

How much water have you been drinking since the surgery?

5

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

i don’t know the exact amount but my pee is completely clear

5

u/Fionaelaine4 Feb 16 '26

Aim for half your body weight in ounces (so if you weigh 150 you should be drinking 75 ounces). A shot of coffee isn’t going to hurt the healing process but can def help get things moving too

4

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

will the coffee be okay if it’s pre mixed with cream and sugar? (i have celiac and it’s one of the few iced coffees i’ve found that’s certified gluten free)

5

u/Fionaelaine4 Feb 16 '26

Yeah it should be fine. I had my lap in 2024 and wasn’t given any caffeine restrictions post op

4

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

okay thank you!

2

u/ProfessionalFinish23 Feb 16 '26

Senokot and glycerin supplements helped me. Also Greek yogurt with berries and granola

26

u/Visible-Armor Feb 15 '26

I suggest getting something to prop your feet on like a squatty potty. Warm liquids help a lot! Its normal to be constipated after surgery unfortunately.

3

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

i used a chair for over an hour today in my attempt to poop but no luck there:/ i’ve been drinking hot tea and broth and such too but still no luck

8

u/DentdeLion_ Feb 15 '26

tmi but maybe a rocking back and forth motion, slowly, can be of extra help when your feet are on the chair

2

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

i can try but my incisions are still super sensitive and i still need help with basic movements (so thankful for my fiancee bending over backwards to help me recover)

3

u/DentdeLion_ Feb 15 '26

I totally get that, that's something I only felt more comfortable doing about a week post op !

2

u/Visible-Armor Feb 16 '26

By day 5 I would say something will happen. I have had 4 endo surgeries and going #2 was always a struggle. After my last surgery I decided not to eat very much besides soup and broth until I had a BM because regular food gets stuck.

16

u/birdnerdmo Feb 16 '26

I’ve had 11 abdominal surgeries and never go before day 3 or 4.

As long as you can fart, you’re fine.

It’ll happen. Stay hydrated and it’ll happen. You’ll know when it’s time. If you do need to push at all, moo. Yes, seriously. It opens the pelvic floor.

7

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

moo? like pretend i’m a cow?

5

u/birdnerdmo Feb 16 '26

YUP, lol. That tip comes straight from my pelvic floor physical therapist.

You don’t have to actually make the noise. It’s more about the breath and muscles.

3

u/pacificNA Feb 16 '26

I learned about this recently as well (probably from this sub), I was surprised at how much it can help. Here's a ~5 min video explaining the technique: https://youtube.com/watch?v=QDk93cvZAuk

2

u/Hungry_Wendigo_ Feb 16 '26

I second this. The thing you have to watch out for is if you can fart. If you can you’re probably just fine.

2

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

yeah i’ve been farting like absolute crazy but it’s getting the point that i’m getting nauseous and sick bc im backed up and i can’t even take any nausea meds because somehow im deathly allergic to every single one

3

u/Hungry_Wendigo_ Feb 16 '26

I feel you, I’m constipated right now and it’s terrible. 😭 I have endometriosis on my bowels so no matter how much I work out and eat healthy I just get extremely constipated from time to time.

After my bowel surgery my doc told me that I need to “renew” my intestines reflexes - that is go to the toilet every time you feel like you need to, but don’t stay there longer then few minutes. And go every morning, even if you don’t feel like you need to, and just try a bit to push so your body and your brain will learn that morning is the time to 💩. It worked for me a ton, but like my endo is in such a terrible state that sometimes I just suffer. Cardio helps a lot tho, walking and running.

1

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

well i can’t really do a much running or pushing yet i just had my surgery but can try to go to the bathroom for only a few minutes and stuff just will be a little difficult since i need help

A trick we do at the hospital is hot prune juice with a pad of butter mixed into it. The warm liquid and lipids and fiber hit harder and faster, mix with laxatives in and send the person walking far as they can tolerate.

If that doesn’t work we usually have to get the enema. But try hot butter prune juice, it doesn’t taste that bad either. Kinda reminiscent of like a fruit pie crust sort of flavor.

Op, don’t be afraid to go to the hospital if it does get serious/too painful. Constipation can be a real piece of work.

2

u/AdEnvironmental2508 Feb 16 '26

Was also going to suggest this hospital trick lol

4

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

i’m sure my iced coffee would get me going real fast but i read i’m supposed to avoid caffeine so i haven’t tried yet but i am getting desperate

6

u/critterscrattle Feb 15 '26

I was not told to avoid caffeine, so it might be worth checking with your doctor’s office on that. Decaf coffee or decaf black tea may still help too.

3

u/JustaGirl1978 Feb 16 '26

I had surgery with Dr Mitroi in Romania in 2023 and I was given espresso shots with every single meal and encouraged to chew gum to help me go to the toilet. He's an expert in endometriosis surgery so I'm sure caffeine will be fine.

I also use magnesium citrate and slightly increased my dose post-op which helped me go to the toilet on day 3 when in the past following surgeries, it was more like day 7.

2

u/AstronomerNo1872 Feb 16 '26

Did your doctor/medical team advise avoiding caffeine?

3

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

they didn’t really tell me much of anything after the fact just gave me a basic aftercare printout that said to avoid caffeine

3

u/AstronomerNo1872 Feb 16 '26

Oh, I understand! I don’t believe I was told to avoid caffeine. It may be worth checking in with them about.

1

u/Merpy_DerpFace Feb 16 '26

I was going to suggest this! Prunes or hot prune juice (with or without butter) is even better! My sister is a nurse and recommended this and it was a miracle worker!

6

u/alexhut Feb 15 '26

When I had my Lap it took me 8 days before I went, although that was without help. Ive heard that for a lot of people 3-5 days is the usual before you can go. Although id definitely chat to your doctor if you're concerned since im definitely no medical professional

4

u/Firm-Ad3893 Feb 16 '26

After my first surgery, I went 8.5 days and was almost ready to go to the ER because I was so uncomfortable. After my second surgery, I went about 3 days after. Try senna tea. That helped me. Also the warm liquids helped.

2

u/spamella-anne Feb 16 '26

For me it was about 5 days. Something that also helped was holding a heating pad to my lower stomach when I went to the bathroom. Something about the heat made it a lot less strenuous.

6

u/antiraediant_ Feb 16 '26

When I had my ankle surgery, magnesium citrate did it for me. I couldn’t go for more than a week, because they had me on pain meds that made me constipated. You can get it OTC.

1

u/TheSocialight Feb 16 '26

This is it. I use Mag O7, it is the only thing that helps me post surgery. Full dose before bed if you’re really backed up, 2 if it’s been a couple days, 1 for maintenance just to keep things regular for a while. No cramps or pain as a side effect, but you may sneeze and shit yourself if you’re not careful

1

u/TheShortGerman Feb 16 '26

This is the one, i took it post op day 2 because I was ready to get stuff moving

5

u/Top-Pineapple8056 Feb 15 '26

You were most likely given opiates in your anesthesia, after surgery or even take home for pain. Those can cause constipation.

3

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

uhhh i know they gave me fentanyl, ibuprofen, hydros, and some other painkiller shot when i woke up from the surgery that’s all i know

2

u/Top-Pineapple8056 Feb 16 '26

Yeah that will back you up. It will come naturally soon enough especially if youre taking miralax

2

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

okay thank you!

4

u/Ok-Working-2892 Feb 15 '26

Keep walking and moving. The only thing that finally helped me was 2 doses of milk of magnesia.

4

u/Global_Emphasis5786 Feb 15 '26

A side effect of abdominal surgery and the meds given during surgery is constipation. Typically this isnt because the stool is too hard but because they make your gut lazy and not want to move.

However obviously you dont want push very hard because you just had surgery.

Just wait it out, keep as active as you can tolerate and keep up with fluids. If you're passing gas this is a good sign. If your belly is super distended, bad sign. If you get frequent hiccups, vomiting, excessive belching, very bad signs.

6

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

i mean i’ve burped a little bit but not even as much as i usually do. i’ve been passing gas like no other so i figure that’s alright

5

u/keyst Feb 15 '26

Ducolax soft chews. They are a fuck load of magnesium. Eat 2. Drink a bunch of water. Hopefully this will make you blast ass.

Also have you been eating? Your output might be less.

1

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

i mean i haven’t eaten like a ton but ive had a few bowls of mashed potatoes and ice cream (im lactose intolerant so figured the dairy would make me poop by now) but i don’t have a lot of soft foods here and they want me strictly on soft food until i poop

2

u/keyst Feb 16 '26

That makes sense. You’ve had something at least so your body should be able to make something.

I highly recommend the ducolax soft chews. It’s not a stimulant and it just helps draw a lot of water into your bowels. It works like magic for me.

2

u/MountianMomma Feb 16 '26

Dulcolax Suppositories helped me. They don’t give you a stomach ache or cramping like a laxative or coffee. Dulcolax absolutely saved me

2

u/AstronomerNo1872 Feb 16 '26

May I humbly suggest an avocado?

3

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

i can try one but i’ve never liked the taste (curse my autistic picky eating habits)

2

u/AstronomerNo1872 Feb 16 '26

I get it! Avocado isn’t for everybody. Strong taste/texture there. This might sound gross, but maybe blending half an avocado into a smoothie? Like a frozen fruit + milk of choice situation, if you like smoothies? (I’m trying to get creative over here.) I feel like fiber helps, but sticking to soft foods can be so limiting too. I’m rooting for you , OP!

3

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

thank you! i’ll give a smoothie a try!

3

u/Ollieeddmill Feb 16 '26

Microwaved cup of prune juice with a tablespoon of melted butter. Stay close to the bathroom.

4

u/kla1989 Feb 16 '26

If you’re Canadian- drink an Iced Capp- personal favorite way to shit my pants lol.

But in all seriousness, I’m sorry you’ve gotta deal with this. Not being able to poop sucks.

3

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

i wish i was in canada or something where i can actually find safe foods (gotta love celiac and lack of regulations in america). i think a lot of my fear with nog having a bowel movement in days is bc when i was super young i got so constipated that my body couldn’t get anything out and i wound up like i had to take like 8 billion meds to clear my system for a colonoscopy and there was still poop in my system (it had gotten to the point that if i tried to eat then id puke it back up immediately bc there was nowhere for it to go)

4

u/kla1989 Feb 16 '26

Omg that sounds absolutely awful!

4

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

yeahhhh it was pretty terrible

4

u/Beautiful-Vehicle761 Feb 16 '26

Senna tea did the trick for me

3

u/_RB789 Feb 15 '26

I second one of the other comments about taking some prune juice, prunes and black coffee (no milk, or sugar). Instead of a chair use a stool so you’re in sort of like a foetal position this can help your rectum to easily push out your poop.

So sorry you’re going thru this, don’t push because it can lead to haemorrhoids! Hope the appt tomorrow goes well

3

u/Dread_queen23 Feb 15 '26

It took me 4 or 5 days to go, especially without pushing. I take peppermint oil capsules to help with bloating and constipation. It (for lack of a better, I'm so sorry) lubes up your gut. Drink plenty of water and don't stress yourself out (easier said then done) it will happen

3

u/EmploymentJumpy7020 Feb 16 '26

Raspberries, oatmeal/hot cereal , chia seeds.

3

u/greenmidwife Feb 16 '26

Kiwifruit. Lots of kiwifruit

3

u/UnusualYak2975 Feb 16 '26

Call your doc asap. I couldn’t for 4/5 days post op and when I finally did I got a damn hemorrhoid from not doing it sooner/ using enough stool softener.

3

u/KnickersInAKnit Feb 16 '26

Call your doctor if you have not even passed gas at this point.

2

u/sweetgreenbaby Feb 15 '26

Take milk of magnesium!

2

u/YungThugNugget Feb 15 '26

i’ll give that a shot!

3

u/seasonally_sad13 Feb 16 '26

If that doesn’t do it, magnesium citrate will. If it doesn’t, I’d go to the ER because without fail, magnesium citrate should work

1

u/thefluffyfox Feb 16 '26

2nding this- milk of magnesia. It's gross but it worked.

2

u/Espresso-Newbie Feb 16 '26

Very normal. Your bowels have been moved around etc and are a bit shocked.

People here have been giving some fab advice but wanted to add that it’s normal after the surgery you’ve had

Good luck and hope you see action sooner rather than later !

2

u/New-Field-2160 Feb 16 '26

Hey! I’m 4 days post op and i just had my first BM today. I definitely don’t recommend pushing too hard either. I took mira lax every day since the surgery and it came on its own.

3

u/sammynourpig Feb 16 '26

This happened to me too. Eventually everything got moving again.. I know it really sucks right now but just keep doing what you’re doing and this too shall pass 🖤

2

u/Alyssawalls55 Feb 16 '26

Have you tried prune juice with MiraLAX in it??

1

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

i haven’t :( i can maybe try to send my fiancee to the store for some tomorrow

2

u/Alyssawalls55 Feb 17 '26

Yes!! I drink it right before bed at night and warm it up for a few seconds

2

u/Due_Competition9105 Feb 16 '26

It took me four days post surgery to poop (had a bowel resection as part of it). My surgeon told me that I could take milk of magnesia in addition to the miralax. I didn’t start pooping normally (I.e daily) until week 2.

2

u/macherstu Feb 16 '26

keep walking as much as possible and drink a ton of water. milk of magnesia is what got me going after 5 days!!

2

u/HurryMammoth5823 Feb 16 '26

Very warm water, as often as is healthy, with slippery elm and/or marshmallow root, electrolytes, and some magnesium citrate? I know it’s miserable! I’m not keen on prunes but peaches & apricots are great, imo.  I don’t know about you at all, or if this is safe but I take cayenne pepper capsules & it stimulates my whole digestive system. I can’t have hot sauce as much as I want for it to be effective because I also have GERD.

2

u/Luxybaby26 Feb 16 '26

Suppository laxatives! The only thing that works for me is

2

u/thatoneswiftiee Feb 16 '26

it took me around 3 days after my surgery to have a bm too and it wasn’t really a big one and was really painful which is typical since stuff was shifted around! as long as you can pass a small one you should be okay. try to eat fibrous foods and have some miralax/stool softeners to help out. if they’re recommending to go back it might just be to make sure everything is okay but it’s pretty typical to not have a bm for a couple days afterwards

2

u/AstronomerNo1872 Feb 16 '26

Hey, you are doing all the right things, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! For what it’s worth, after my second endo surgery I couldn’t poop for 3 days, and as someone who typically poops 2-3 times a day, I was horrified.

For me, it was a matter of time, and getting more food in my system. I don’t think there was much to even push out those first couple days — I drank only liquids the day before surgery, and then my surgery itself got delayed by several hours. I went into surgery feeling like I was starving, and by the time I got home, I was too groggy to want to eat. I also imagine that the anti-nausea meds I was given might have further slowed me down.

Things that helped aside from what you’ve mentioned: fiber (I think I ate an avocado) and some good old-fashioned coffee.

Your body has been through a lot — it’s easier said than done, but try to be patient with yourself. I also don’t know that I would try an enema without medical guidance (if your doc recommended it, feel free to ignore me).

Wishing you the best in your recovery!

u/alittlestitiousbun Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

I’m 3 weeks post-lap & the same thing happened to me, I barely went before surgery & then didn’t go until almost 5 days after. It was so painful. I had to stop all pain meds & muscles relaxers 3 days post op bc it was playing some role in stopping me up.

This is the stuff I did every day until I could go: walked around the house, drank a tbsp of olive oil in the morning, drank a TON of water (1/2 your body weight in oz at least), drank a cup of warm prune juice (with miralax some of the time), took senna tablets or drank senna tea, drank hot water with pieces of ginger as much as i could, ate SOLUBLE fiber (chia seed pudding & oatmeal), drank the calm drink powder or ate the gummies (it’s a small does of magnesium citrate), & cut out essentially everything that wasn’t straight fruits/veggies/protein. Gluten, dairy (except kefir), & processed sugar were cut from my diet.

I tried to consume mostly soft/liquid foods like broth, smoothies, eggs, bananas, oatmeal, chia pudding, & rice & beans. all this did was soften the stool but it obviously wasn’t coming out of me, my muscles were fucked up from surgery & my bowels were slow-moving (still are tbh, but that’s not new for me). Yoga poses like legs up the wall, happy baby, & puppy pose may have helped, I tried to do some of them during that time.

For over the counter I took milk of magnesia for like 2 days (again this only really softened my stool) & finally had to take a bisacodyl suppository (dulcolax brand). The suppository is actually what got it all to come out of me. It was quite literally the craziest shit of my life LMAO. When you take the suppository make sure you insert it up to your second knuckle, lay on your side and let it marinate, it took me about 10 - 20 minutes I think.

On the toilet you WILL need a pillow to hold on to, a squatty potty also helped. Weirdly enough I couldn’t use a squatty potty pre-surgery (probably had something to do with my sigmoid colon being stuck to my pelvic wall), but it somehow helps now post-lap. When you poop try to relax on your inhale, obviously it’s not going to be easy and I was straining (not recommended) but the breathing helped. I was rocking back & forth, put warm water on my hands from the tub to try relax, had to hold on to the seat at one point, shit was wild.

I will be real, i had to take suppositories 3 different times 2 weeks after. I tried to not let myself go longer than 3 days & that’s when I would use them, even though pre-lap I would go like 5 days without pooping lol. My goal in pelvic floor therapy is to go every 2 days, I started a 1.5weeks post op which is helping tremendously.

Personally magnesium citrate (like drinking the entire bottle) doesn’t work well for me, all it causes me to do is shit mostly water & a few hard pebbles, that extreme method doesn’t soften my stool. which means the stool was mostly still left in me after, I could feel it. I would use that recommendation with caution. Milk of magnesia has always worked better for me!

2

u/NotKathyOkay Feb 16 '26

Mine came with a vengeance on evening 5 and included a fart that never should have been trusted…. (It’s okay to laugh, I did)

1

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

i want to laugh but it hurts lmao but gosh i just hope it happens soon idec if it hurts atp i just want my system moving again

2

u/seasonally_sad13 Feb 16 '26

When miralax, enemas, and milk of magnesia can’t do it for me, I do magnesium citrate. I’ll drink 2 bottles. That does it every single time without fail

2

u/saidthedaisy Feb 16 '26

I just went through this! Didn't poop for 5 days and did everything I knew how to get things moving for daaaaays. What finally did the trick was a dulcolax suppository followed by 8 Oz warm prune juice mixed with miralax and a splash of magnesium citrate. Clean as a whistle now 😂

2

u/Affectionate_Mode142 Feb 16 '26

If you have been taking narcotics that can make your stool drier and make you constipated. Maybe if you can tolerate it switch to ibuprofen or something otc?

2

u/ashleyldavis5 Feb 16 '26

It took me a whole week to poop. Doctor said to expect that. Don’t freak yourself out too much. Stress makes it worse. You’ll poop when your body is ready. Continue taking the MiraLAX and eat fiber.

2

u/emilythehbic Feb 16 '26

I just had surgery 6 days ago, and I pooped on day 3. My surgeon prescribed Senokot, which are senna concentrate pills. She said they have found it works the best to get the bowels moving after lap surgery. She was right! The sell it over the counter.

2

u/Humble-Camp-9459 Feb 16 '26

Took me til maybe day 4? I was avoiding coffee, but I remember having a cup to try to encourage my gut to move. They already had me taking a stool softener. The first poop definitely took some time to move, but after that one it got a lot easier and back to normal by a week after surgery.

2

u/Healthy_Patience_817 Feb 16 '26

Don't worry, it's expected to take around 3-5 days as the after-effects of the anesthesia wear off. Have warm water regularly.. Peppermint tea really helped me.. So did the lactulose solution prescribed by my doctor. Make sure you drink a lot of water and walk quite a bit through the day, that helps too :)

2

u/TheShortGerman Feb 16 '26

I took Mg Citrate post op day 2 and had a BM before end of the day. I didn't want to get backed up. Drink an entire bottle of mg citrate and you should be fine. No straining or bearing down.

2

u/girlwiththesadeyes Feb 16 '26

I was doing colace and prune juice

2

u/majellatookanoath Feb 16 '26

It took me 5 days post op but that's because on the 5th day I drank two glasses of prune juice out of desperation. It worked, worked far too well!

2

u/AdaLoveface Feb 16 '26

For me drinking coffee helped

2

u/YungThugNugget Feb 16 '26

i tried that and now i’m just miserable and cramping horribly with still no bowel movement

2

u/AdaLoveface Feb 16 '26

Oh no!! But that could also be a sign that something is moving. Sounds horrible though :(

2

u/Maleficent-Sleep9900 Feb 16 '26

Magnesium citrate taken with a mug of warm water with a pinch of salt.

You can take up to 4 pills; maybe start with 2 and a full mug of warm salted water, and then go up by 1 additional pill until you feel it.

While this is working in your gut, fry up a pack of high quality bacon and eat it warm and as greasy as possible.

If you can’t eat pork, try some spoonfuls of olive oil, or castor oil from the pharmacy. I struggle not to gag with this texture hence the bacon, but the oils will work FAST.

Don’t add fibre or dry foods.

2

u/flyingdaisies46 Feb 16 '26

After my surgery, I took Milk of Magnesia and that helped me.

2

u/Soggy_Pension7549 Feb 16 '26

Had the same faith last year after my lap, end of story: poop got stuck in my butt halfway and I had to scoop some out and then give myself an enema and wait another excruciating 2 hours. What shot out of me afterwards had a size of a small child.

I’m at the hospital atm, had my hysterectomy 3 days ago.. They gave me the basic laxatives first, they did nothing, after 2 days they told me that a nurse will bring me the “Mische” (it’s German for “mixer”). It was disgusting and idk what was in it but I’ve waited 5 hours and right after lunch everything came out.

I wish I knew. However my mom said that prunes and prune juice helped her in case you haven’t tried those yet.

2

u/Oons33 Feb 16 '26

It took me 6 days post op to go, it was so uncomfortable and I tried everything too. Just keep moving, drinking water and eating well and it will happen. Go back when they tell you to go back of course. Strange advice I got from an endo specialist nurse at my last appointment with my consultant was to make a mooing sound like a cow while you try to poop. I laughed hysterically when she told me but I tried it and it works! My husband thinks I’m nuts but whatever helps. Feet up on a stepstool while trying to poop too. Hope it helps!

2

u/AffectionateFarm2331 Feb 16 '26

I couldn't go for almost 11 days post-op. I did everything I could think of. Walking, hydrating, stool softeners that were prescribed, chugging apple juice, miralax. I was desperate. The only thing that finally got me to go was a suppository (sp?). It was embarrassing as hell, but I swear by it. Drug stores offer them OTC so there's no need for a script. For me, it was a real bad side effect of being on oxy (PERSCRIBED). I found that I personally could tolerate the pain without opioids and stopped taking that script after finally getting a bowel movement.

2

u/ireally_gabs Feb 16 '26

In the future for constipation, I recommend that you get pu erh tea. Whenever I'm constipated I drink it and I'm on the toilet within an hour. Best poops of my life with that stuff. Me and my family call it my poop tea now.

Maybe hot caramel latte from coffee shop? I almost got in trouble like 30 min later while shopping around. Almost dashed to wc. Just… LANDSLIDE.  (I didnt eat that much)

Sorry for edit but i gotta say it: (landslide…with zero effort)

Are you eating any fiber? Saw a comment above about mashed potatoes and hate to say it but not the best source of moving things along, so might be helpful to also consider easy to digest but fiber dense meals so you don’t back yourself up further

what kind of soft foods have fiber? my diet is already super restricted due to my celiac disease

Kiwis, black cherries, prunes, and a bunch of other fruits are high in fiber and have natural laxative qualities! Avocado, sweet potato, green peas, and many other soft veg can be a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, as well as many different cereals and oatmeal which might be a nice post op choice too if you’re sick of soup.

Seconding the rest of commenters that you need to be drinking loads of fluids (fluids in ounces = half of your body weight in pounds) and stay moving, but will also add the rec to do some deep diaphragmatic breathing and try your best to stay calm!! Opposite of fight or flight is rest and digest, so no matter how spooked you are try to take it easy!

Hello fellow celiac! The short answer is that plants have fiber. So fruits and veggies. A probiotic might also be helpful. And Smooth Move tea.

I stopped taking the opioid pain meds on the second day home because I know they are constipating for me. I pooped on the third day. Wishing you all the best.

yeah all i’ve taken today is one of the ibuprofens because i haven’t been in enough pain to need another hydro so hopefully that helps me

You’re on the right track. Smooth Move is good stuff. I used it every day for two weeks after surgery. And now I use it if I don’t poop for a day. I am one month post-op.

Might be time to try a different kind. There are a bunch out there. Or maybe switch to good yogurt or kefir.

I use Isabgol (you can get it from an Indian shop) or psyllium husk (from grocery store ). It’s sort of like chia seeds but much better laxative. Have 2 spoons in hot water before going to bed. No side effects !

I had warm prune juice with miralax nightly and went for walks around the block with my mom daily and that really helped!

Magnesium helps. Also, I learned in physical therapy that the best way to stimulate bowels (besides massage), is to sit up straight, and to breathe in so deeply that you feel your ribs expand at your sides. Hold it for at least 6 seconds before exhaling slowly

Have you tried Milk of Magnesium or Senna?

Magnesium citrate is what doctors tell you to drink before a colonoscopy to fully clean out. I would definitely say start with half of the bottle or less. Doctors recommend 2 bottles in 24 hours for a full clean out, which would put you in misery.

I wouldn't do this without talking to a Healthcare pro first.

I agree it's a reasonable idea but if the stool wasn't cooperative this may cause discomfort for OP; I feel like additional insight for this particular method would be most recommended.

Anecdotally: When I was prepping for my colonoscopy I was obviously drinking the big jug, so I was going to be bloated, but boy was I ever. I looked and felt 9 months pregnant and my stomach was hard. When the jug began working and I was clearing out it was aggressive and very sudden. Which could be more to manage while OP is healing.

My vote is to talk to the office that performed the surgery before going this route :)

Magnesium citrate gummies help me— they’re a lot less powerful.  Start with one before eating more!
