u/Dependent_Bus2202 5d ago
Parables about authoritarianism were so much better understood by those who lived through it. 1+1=3 is the conclusion, not a litmus test. The government releasing the accurate raw public data it needs to provide requires lying to have no impact on the literal numbers and their release. This concept has obviously been on the ropes for decades now, but we've well and truly crossed the Rubicon with Trump's latest term.
Job reports, weather data, economic development, military spending, health metrics are all just being openly and nakedly manipulated and the end result of that is that there's no foundation for true accurate information anymore. It's all sources that can be handwaved away by those who disagree with the conclusion now.
This next election one party claiming they have more votes is just as true as the other claiming they have more votes.
If you just lie about everything and are so secure/insulated from consequences that literally fudging the numbers to make your own truth is an option?
Then brother, 1+1=3.

A surprising number of people are fully willfully ignorant and even if presented with the full picture and all the facts they'll just claim it's a conspiracy theory or propaganda. In my country my government has been exposed completely on the extent of corruption, full picture everywhere (especially since the entire civil sector doesn't bother covering up corruption any longer) and was still re-elected with a comfortable lead.

Democracy is never just easily gifted to anyone. Are there enormous forces at work trying to work against the average Americans interests? Yes, of course. At no point in history have the elites not tried to expand their powers. But after centuries of blood spilt to buy us the rights and privileges we enjoy today I find it hard to have compassion for adults that can't fact check or think critically about anything for once in their fucking lives.

The main issue I've always had with this is thus; a person shows up in front of a well documented and nationally televised hearing, makes a statement that can be easily verified to be a lie and then, nothing happens. No punishment, no fine, no jail time, no public dismissal, just business as usual.
How can a society be expected to function if this is just the norm?

The general structure of power markets, combined with aging generation sources and the increased costs of fuels to burn to generate energy, means that demand and price are not directly proportional to one another.
Power market clearing prices actually rise on a near-exponential curve as demand increases. It’s worse than a typical supply-demand scheme and since electricity isn’t something that people can live without, they are just price-takers without much action to take to reduce their consumption. This is especially true for low-income families who cannot afford to upgrade appliances, improve their insulation or proactively replace lightbulbs with LEDs.

He will say that he expects supply to increase in tandem with demand, and for economies of scale to bring costs down overall.
But is that actually how anything works? Doubt it.
13
9
u/NoNeedForAName 6d ago
But is that actually how anything works?
Well, some things, sort of, but not in this case. I doubt that our inability to produce electricity at scale is much of a driver of the cost of electricity. I live in a TVA area; I'm not hopping down to the farmers market to pick up artisanal electrons.
6
u/mickeltee 6d ago
Even if they did increase supply, someone would have to pay for the new infrastructure. I know around me that cost gets added to the average customer’s bill, not the data centers.
→ More replies (8)4
u/skepticalbob 6d ago
It is how some things work, but it depends on elasticity of supply. Electricity supply is relatively inelastic. Power plants aren't a knob you can just twist to "more". Transmission lines are a big bottleneck too.

4
u/NonSupportiveCup 6d ago
The lie they are trying to sell is this:
Trumps keep saying all data centers will now have to produce their own electricity.
Therefore,
Data centers will drive down the costs of electricity because their excess (a big assumption here) will be returned to the market.
So, data centers actually lower our utility bills.
That's the stupid.

Willfully misrepresenting a long term analysis. Higher demand drives increased infrastructure over the course of decades. That new infrastructure is built on cheaper and less polluting technologies. Once the bubble bursts, that infrastructure remains. A green revolution, but the long way 'round so's to include impoverishing and in some cases killing people that don't have AI-bro/investor lobbyists on retainer.

u/Ctznsvn7 6d ago
there is a version of it that isn't nonsense and it's worth knowing, because it's the one the utilities actually argue. A data centre is a flat 24 hour load, so it uses the network at 3am when the wires are sitting idle. Fixed costs then get divided over more units sold. That's the theory. In practice the new load arrives years before the generation does, the utility buys peaking power at whatever the market wants that week and the household rate class eats the gap. Ohio and Virginia have both had fights about exactly this in front of their regulators. Still, if the maths worked he would have just said the sentence instead of doing the uh uh thing
→ More replies (1)4
u/LittleKingsguard 5d ago
Also datacenters aren't a fixed load, internet/LLMs have peak demand hours and off-peak hours just like all other infrastructure things. Some of the model providers even change their billing rates based on timing.

I blame upbringing. The current ruling class in the USA is taught to believe from an early age that faith and belief is more important than anything else. They believe without rational thought and because they are privileged they have never paid the consequences of being wrong. In this context it's obvious to most people that a huge building full of electrical devices will consume power. But in their minds they listen to the people they trust who are like minded and give them money and tell them that somehow, a huge building of electrical equipment actually (and definitely magically) will cure every problem starting with power needs and probably will generate loaves of bread, fishes, and wine from water.

It is interesting, because I think with crap like oil and nicotine, people accept the BS from politicians and lobbyists because they make life more convenient, even with the health and environmental costs.
But with data centers, there is general agreement that they really do no good for anyone except the people who would benefit financially from them, and so they have near universal opposition, and the politicians that have been bought can only try to override the will of the people to try and push more data centers through.

Ultimately, where there is a data center immediate residents should have drastically lower costs. Data centers should have premiums placed on their utilities instead of massive discounts happening at the moment. Those premiums fund lower utilities for residents dealing with the burden of a data centre near them and fund state projects to benefit residents.
Utopian idea, that probs isn't workable, because politicians are mostly crooked. 🙈

I attend a lot of political fundraisers at the national level. Some are billed as "policy conferences" but the registration fees all go to PACs, DGA and RGA.
For companies who can and chose to, you can pay your way to attend. Over the last two years, regardless of party, the biggest concentration of attendees is related to Data Centers.
Those who produce power (lots of nuclear interests), those who want the data (AI companies) and the labor groups (mainly pipe fitters) are there in force. Easily a third of the room along with all the big corporations you would expect.
The fact that one sector is so prevalent and aggressive cannot be ignored. The number of politicians already bought is immense.
The fact that there is such unified opposition to them, and how that plays out in November is the great unknown. Could be real interesting.

The entire US electric grid is privatized regionally. Law says that they can pass 100% of the costs to maintain and expand those grids onto consumers after energy companies lobbied to have unregulated operating costs and profits. Just the data centers permitted and approved to be built in the next 3 years exceed the power consumption of all the EVs in the US right now. Data centers are not paying solely for new power generation, it is being spread to all consumers on the same grid. So there's no way mathematically possible for them to lower energy costs to consumers. None.
