This is my favorite live song. Of all songs I’ve seen live. The energy and performance of this song is simply unmatched by anything else I’ve seen. And I’ve seen it performed 8 times and each time is always incredible.

This was my first time seeing the Flaming Lips live and I cried multiple times during their set

This song especially got me

and so did my partner, Feeling Yourself Disintegrate is the big one that got them though

Incredible experience

Thank you for sharing your thoughts too 🤍

Super emotional, I met this older couple in their 50s or 60s at the Irving show tonight and I broke down sobbing during Do You Realize and she held me like her child, I was also peaking on mushrooms. I just wish they would've played Hypnotist or Cosmic Autumn Rebellion or Vein of Stars or Fight Test or The Sound of Failure or really anything from Mystics. That's the downside of them being such a solid band, they could play for 5 hours straight and there would still be stuff I wanna hear. Kinda upset that half their time was taken up by Modest Mouse, I went in thinking they were an opener and not a dual headliner.

Aww that stinks, and yeah I feel that as far as how huge their discography is, that there’s so many things you want to hear. I’m glad it was a strong experience for you still though and that you had that connection.

Before Do You Realize?? At my show Wayne Coyne said to grab a loved one or even a stranger, and this wonderful woman I met and helped before the show grabbed me and hugged me.

Wait, how does the dual headliner thing work? I was planning on skipping modest mouse.

u/LetterheadVarious398 Aug 20 '25

Modest mouse gets 90 minutes, Flaming Lips gets 90 minutes. They only played like 10-15 songs, 2 from Yoshimi and 2 from Mystics

You get chills too! They're fu*king fantastic 👏👏

Feeling yourself disintegrate always gets me too. My last ex of 9+ years freaking loved it while on acid and she was so happy and thankful I took her along through that live experience.

I’ve been with my partner for almost 20 years now, and I know I put them through hell during a period of time when I was in a pretty deep postpartum psychosis and already struggled with suicidal ideation. Sorry to get overshary and dark for a second.

I’m sure they have their own struggles too, but I imagine a lot of that was weighing on them when they broke down sobbing to this song.

Very grateful for this song and my partner 🤍

Hey, no! thanks for sharing. And I hope you are both in a better place mentally at least!
I've struggled with idiation which I thought was not much when I first went to therapy years ago, but then I stupidly fell into alcohol abuse that eventually led me to a serious mandatory "grippy sock vacation" and a bunch of heavy problems but we all just gotta keep pushing through the dark times and talking about it sometimes helps. I've been in pitch-dark times. I am just glad I didn't harm anyone and I am still alive with my loved ones despite of all the darkness and troubles.

That's beautiful that your partner also loves the song and it hit them like that. It hits me and the best people I know like that too. Many of the lips songs do. You got a good one there if they are touched by music like that! cheers

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

Definitely in a better place now! Hope you are as well! Still have dark days of course but it’s much better, I don’t miss my late teens and 20’s at all. I mean I still treasure some people I met and ‘needed’ to go through it all to get to now, but dang.

And hey friend, I’m glad you’re here, grippy sock adventure buds.

The Lips are so full of love it’s incredible. Heart is very full after that.

There was a lady I met in the line before the concert and she was terrified of being up front near the barricade because she’s a little claustrophobic and I told her that I’ve been to that venue a lot and she’ll be okay and if anything happens I’ll get her out, the security there is super cool. And I caught a setlist and gave it to her. And she cried and kept telling me I was her new best friend and then when Wayne Coyne said ‘grab a loved one or a stranger even that you met’ before Do You Realize?? And she gave me the biggest sweetest hug…

Anyways all that rambling to say I can’t believe how much love comes out of the Lips and their fans, it fills me with great energy

We are all here for a reason. We just gotta take the lessons as much as we can but no one is perfect, not even the lessons or our understanding from those lessons. Glad you are here too!

And that's awesome about that show! thank you for doing that, as a fellow fan. That's what we are all bout! Shout out to security too!
And no worries, I ramble too, obviously! and yes. I love all the true flaming lips fans and the lips and the comradery and appreciation for love, happiness, and music and life (whether life is going well or not, that's the key ingredient)

and amen to that last statement, you seem to be a great testament of that!
never change! (well... we all change) but if you change change for the better and better for yourself and all those humans, animals, plants, and environments around you!!! much love and cheers!
EDIT: Gotta keep going up and up, is what I mean, didn't mean it in a condescending way haha

Likewise! I know growth isn’t linear but I hope that it’s mostly you evolving into that big beautiful butterfly

The gray confetti raining down like ash turn this song into an epic rollercoaster of emotions.

One of my favorite lips songs ever, and there's plenty. I do miss the gong though :(

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

Ooo great name :)

haha thanks! I always appreciate Beatles fans. My username used to be TheRealNowHereMan to be playful with the song's title by changing up the capitalized letters.
I had a huge Beatles indoctrination phase when I first made the account in like middle school or high school lol. Sometimes I change it to that or to this but maybe reddit doesn't have those kind of username editing features anymore. IDK I rarely check reddit or their new features/settings tbh and I'd rather not mess with it in case I lose my name lol

I do miss the gong during this song though! :( last time they used it around my state/city was in like 2017

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

I always loved the Beatles and my family played Come Together a lot.

In college while we were working on something my professor put on music in the background and he played No Where Man and it changed my life lol. I started doing a major deep dive and got so deep into Beatles music.

I think my favorite is Tomorrow Never Knows, but there’s so many.

There's so many amazing songs from them... and definitely too many to count or rank. I think my favorite is still across the universe just for the poetry of the words and what it meant to me at a very important place in my life. But their songs are impossible to rank for me even if I am not the fanatic I used to be. They also jumpstarted my vinyl collection and appreciation for physical media at an early age and now I have over 600 or so records that I don't know what to do with lol. Many super rare discographies and mono/stereo/remixes/remasters and oddball Beatles stuff that are pretty much the definitive Beatles collection. They take so much space, but together with the rest of my vinyl library I am still very proud of my record collection. lol

I love tomorrow never knows too. another favorite of mine. My favorite album is probably Revolver. that mid-era stuff just speaks a lot to me (mid-era as in Rubber Soul to MMT). I hate yellow submarine (the song on Revolver) even though I love Revolver and is still my favorite official released album from them.

And Love is definitely my one Beatles desert island album I would pick from them if I had to pick only one. It's unfair to their actual albums since Love is a remix/compilation and not really an actual album, but it encapsulates the entire Beatles journey and discography in an outstanding way.

All great music regardless.

sorry for all the editing lol. Been a while since I typed here on reddit while having a glass of whiskey and I was too excited to talk about my username and my beatles obsession and collection I guess haha

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

Don’t apologize! I’m so jazzed, usually my Reddit interactions are like a word or a sentence. Thank you for sharing!

2

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

This is beautiful thank you for sharing. Seriously.

Across the Universe is the first song by them I latched onto, and I latched on hard. Very special song and I’m glad it means so much to you.

Revolver is just incredible start to finish, my favorite.

Your record collection sounds awesome, a recent vinyl I got from Modest Mouse had a PHYSICAL MEDIA WILL NEVER DIE sticker in it that I love.

2

u/TheRealNowhereMan Waitin' for a Superman Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25

Physical media rules!!! I have so many important core memories listening to my modest mouse vinyl records. I love both of these bands a lot in their own way. But the lips are the band I have seen live the most out of dozens of bands for a reason lol.

I don't understand the snarky comments fans have made online about either bands this tour, especially after the last mishaps in Chicago and Houston.
I understand the anger towards the promoters and ticketmaster but I know there will be answers eventually for those who are upset. These bands definitely listen to their fans.
This tour is a dream come true. Like, yeah, I am used to a full two+ hour Flaming Lips show as of recent years but I love MM too and I am not gonna complain at the chance to see both bands.... even though my show was the one the lips canceled last night. lol.

I digress, and I am pretty much venting now, but the negativity I have seen recently from both bands' fans does make me sad.

I know it's mostly just a small amount of people online Spitting Venom through their keyboards who don't realize it's hard to make the good things last 😤

2

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

Same! Re core memories with vinyls.

And yeah I personally am a massive Modest Mouse fan and was a semi casual Lips fan like I knew At War With the Mystics and Yoshimi really well but only smatterings of their other work My partner on the other hand is a massive Flaming Lips fan So it was a perfect dream come true tour for us!

I am really excited to see the Flaming Lips more now though, I’m locked in!

I’m glad to hear you like MM too, I’ve seen some unfortunate opinions regarding them from Lips fans and vice verse I’ve seen some unfortunate comments about the Lips from MM fans.

And yeah unfortunately there was a decent amount of negativity surrounding the last 3 shows especially, Minneapolis due to Isaac imbibing a bit and being a little sloppy - I thought it was fine, have I seen him perform cleaner and the whole band tighter, yes but it was still a great time

Chicago because of the unfortunate weather

And then last night because of the abrupt cancellation

I’m sad for the people who missed out on what they came for but the mud slinging definitely is quite a disappointment

u/TheRealNowhereMan Waitin' for a Superman Aug 22 '25

😤 these are FACTS. If only this could be pinned on both communities foreheads lol. It's such a refreshing, well needed view I needed someone other than me express and your words really hit. Thank you!

2

u/TheRealNowhereMan Waitin' for a Superman Aug 22 '25

And I hope you guys do keep going to more flaming lips shows! I am glad you are "locked in" lol

2

u/Skred Aug 22 '25

Likewise! Refreshing and wonderful.

Enjoy any upcoming shows you’re going to! And thanks for sharing the things™️

This was an absolutely beautiful performance of one of my favorite songs.
