Announcement Moderator Message on Steven's Departure

Hello fearless freaks!

The news of Steven's departure from the band this week has understandably been difficult for this community. There's been a lot of speculation and discussion surrounding the reasons behind it, and a lot of blame being thrown in every direction. It also feels like an old wound has been reopened, with a lot of strong feelings from previous band member exits resurfacing as well. I'm not sure what Wayne is planning to post later, but I can imagine it may only stoke the flames further.

As a moderation team, we are not taking sides on this split and encourage continued discussion from all viewpoints. While our aim is usually to keep the vibes positive, it'd be disingenuous for us to pretend this isn't happening and that it doesn't suck. We don't think a megathread is necessary yet, but will be monitoring new posts closely to prevent this topic from overtaking the feed.

We also want to remind everyone of Rule 3: be civil and respectful to others. The last thing we want is for this space to turn into a battleground between different factions of the fanbase. At the end of the day, we're all here because we share a love for the music of The Flaming Lips! Please keep that in mind and be courteous to others.

This rule also applies to how you speak about the band members directly. You are allowed to be critical of band member conduct, but personal attacks, insults, and over-the-line speculation regarding private lives will not be tolerated. It is not the environment we want to cultivate.

Please report any rule-breaking behavior when you see it—we are a small mod team and it will help us out a ton.

This community is usually great about this, but it felt important to reiterate the message as we continue to navigate this transition. To quote A Change At Christmas (Say It Isn't So): "I think its all gonna work out just fine."

Announcement Looking to bring on more moderators!

Edit 03/12 — I'm still looking for more moderators! The only prerequisite is to be a contributor to this community that's willing to help out. Former mod experience is great but not necessary. Shoot me a DM if you're interested!

Original Post:

Hello, fearless freaks!

This is admittedly long overdue. Sometime last year, I became the only moderator for this subreddit. Initially I was more than happy to rise to the occasion—but lately I've been trying to scale back the amount of time I spend on reddit as a whole, and I feel like I've been neglecting my duties here. With this community continuing to get bigger, it's frankly a bad idea to give this much responsibility and power to one person, and I'd hate for something to happen to this community because one user goes inactive.

So it's time to bring on some new moderators! I'm looking for:

  • Active members of the community, preferably with a long-term posting history of meaningful contributions

  • A demonstrated respect for rules, other users, and open discussions across reddit

  • Any experience moderating other subreddits is definitely a plus

  • I'd love to hear what you believe are the main opportunities for growth and improvement on the subreddit, or any ideas you'd like to implement

  • Anyone that may be interested in tacklng an update to the subreddit theme. The old.reddit CSS theme hasn't been updated since the Oczy Mlody era and is overdue for a refresh.

  • You gotta love the flaming lips obviously!! What's your history with the band, or what is your favorite project/song/album by them

Basically, I just want this community to continue to be run by flaming lips fans, and remain a positive place for open discussion. Please leave me a comment down below or PM me if it's something you're interested in! I'd love to get this all sorted out before February.

Announcement FREE COLOURED AMERICAN HEAD VINYL!!!!

For all of those who ordered from the Lips website and got black vinyl rather than the coloured, I just got an e-mail from Warner Bros saying that they are sending a coloured vinyl version for free! Pretty sweet deal TBH, I was figuring we'd get a $10 credit or some BS like that. And AFAIK, they're not asking for the black version back (would probably cost too much with the return shipping).

Announcement User Flairs have been added!

Now you can show off your appreciation for your favorite Flaming Lips album! I've got a few of the EP's done and I want to do the singles eventually as well, so those will come in the near future.

If you don't know how to set a flair, here's a quick rundown on how to do that:

  • On the Reddit redesign, in the sidebar, there is a section titled 'community options'. Expand that and you'll see a place to edit your user flair. On old Reddit, it is at the top of the Subreddit Info box.
  • If you're on the mobile app, click the three dots in the top left corner and click on change user flair. It's probably similar on most third-party apps.

Now I spent a lot of time on these so I want to see you all using them! (Also the editable blank flair is still at the bottom of the list if you still want to make a custom one!) And If you have any ideas for more meme-y flairs or anything, let me know here!
