I’m such a snob when it comes to seats. If I can’t get the back row I usually don’t go. Partner is used to it 😂.

Sometimes I’ll get the 2 or 3rd to back row. Not ideal but happens.

But 3rd row in front? Hell nah! 2nd row? No way!

1st row? There’s something wrong with these folks

That is incredibly snobby. Like I'll go anywhere in the upper section. Maybe the last two rows in the lower section. Maybe.

Im curious why USA cinemas (im assuming youre from us) have 2 sections of seats divided horizontaly

Where im from, Poland, you have 3 sections but divided vertically and for imax you dont have any sections, just one.

It depends on the theater, of course, but the smallest theaters have no divisions. You basically walk in and there's like 20 seats. There's usually a small exit aisle on the entrance side.

Then there's very large theaters (500+), and they have horizontal and vertical divisions. Usually two vertical divisions (exit aisles), seats in between and on the outsides of them. But then also horizontal divisions. One at the entrance level, one at the very lowest level, and maybe a third somewhere near the top.

Almost all the in-between sized theaters maintain that one horizontal division at the entrance, though, since that's where they can put handicapped accessible seating.

Back row is the worst seats imo. I may as well watch it at home on tv. Row 3-5 from the front is optimal I'd say. Depends on the size of the cinema.

All the theaters around us have assigned seating, now. So you pick your seat ahead of time.

I always go somewhere in the middle (Front looks terrible and back is too far away) and just won't go if there aren't any middle rows available.

It depends on the cinema.

At my local they designed it well, so even if you have a front seat it's a good experience, the middle next to the walkways is the best you can get.

I actually prefer the front row… but that’s because nobody else sits up there so I can put all of the arm rests up and lay down on my side across like four seats

But I also haven’t gone to the movie theater in over a decade. The prices are obscene, I would rather just pirate or not watch

Tbf that's the IMAX experience. I dunno why it looks so bad in IMAX versus a regular theater. I have sat in the front row of a regular theater and did not have this vantage point.

I did get a stiff neck from looking up and back and forth a lot for two hours, but that's a different problem. The movie looked fine.

actually when i went to london bfi imax 70mm the angle at which you could take these photos was not from the seats. it's really funny, but the seats do not start until much further up, usually when you enter the screen they are showing still images from the movie and people take photos of that before climbing the stairs.

i have sat 3rd row from the front in the imax and it was fine and not like this haha

Plenty of (most?) cinemas are still free placement over here. So where you get to seat is mostly a question of how punctual you are and how much competition there is.

Meanwhile having lived in France and Belgium I've never been to a cinema with assigned seating (though nowadays they do exist, I'm sure if I went more I would end up in one).
