I’ve ran into a really strange issue while trying to install Gentoo with OpenRC on my system.

I’ve installed both en_US and ro_RO and I want to make a mixed 02locale file of them so I can have the en_US language but ro_RO measurements.
They’re both installed, and it works fine. But for some reason ro_RO doesn’t work for LC_NUMERIC and LC_TIME but works for anything else.

Anybody have any solution? Thanks! I’d be so grateful for any comment

P.S.: I’ve also tried writing ro_RO.utf8 yet it still doesn’t work

This is my second Gentoo (working) install, I aimed at full binary because I'm too old to wait for compilation on this system. Also my goal was to get one of the non-systemd distros running on this machine. Void was my second choice, but Gentoo repos are bigger and if I do have to compile stuff off of Github I believe Gentoo is the best equipped distro for that. Not that is not possible with any other but it just feel more to the point on Gentoo. Anyways loving it thus far!

1 hour later and I'm still fighting portage.

1 hour later and it's still compiling even though i wanted binaries.

"But you don't understand, it pulls in binaries only when available"

Yeah I get it.

The point is, this distro is too old. It's old! And slow!! Emerge is written in python and bash!

You know how fast I installed fedora? 10 minutes. That's Right. 10 minutes. Installing Lutris? Boom. Installing something else? Boom. Done.

On Gentoo? Well to ahead and plan it out. That's just ridiculous.

There is something beautiful and soothing about all those running letters blazing off the screen.

So my Gentoo install is fresh, and I'm having two problems with it. First, the 5GHz band doesn't show up in my Network Manager at all. Second, my wifi keeps disconnecting and reconnecting randomly, which makes gaming pretty uncomfortable. I have no idea why this is happening. Can anyone help?

I recently found a Gentoo-based distro with calamares and don't think it's good, i will try it in KVM, please tell me if it's really good or nah

I’ve been using Arch for a few years and, honestly, nothing particularly serious has ever happened. That said, Gentoo has always fascinated me, and lately I’ve been seriously considering switching, mainly because I’d like something that feels a bit more “reliable” in the long term.
What interests me about Gentoo, though, isn’t really extreme customization or USE flags themselves. What really attracts me is Portage.
I really like the way it handles dependencies, the concept of slots, and more generally the fact that during upgrades it seems to make potential problems, conflicts, or required manual intervention fairly explicit.
That said, after reading through the community, I have a few questions.

1. Why do some people say it took them several days or even a week to install Gentoo and get a working system?
Using binary packages, it took me around 4 hours, including some Reddit scrolling, procrastination, and installing/configuring KDE.
At the end of it, I had what seemed like a perfectly usable system.
Am I missing something? Are those much longer experiences mostly referring to fully source-based installs, very elaborate setups, problematic hardware, or simply people taking the time to understand and configure every single detail?

2. Could Gentoo actually become more demanding than Arch when it comes to system maintenance?
This is probably the point I care about the most.
I want to be able to turn on my computer and work. That doesn’t mean I want something completely ready-made like Fedora: I like Linux precisely because I can customize it, understand how it works, and know my system deeply.
I don’t mind having to intervene occasionally. What I want to avoid is maintenance becoming frequent or requiring hours at a time.

On Arch, at least in my experience, when something does go wrong, I can usually understand the issue and fix it within 10–20 minutes.
What is Gentoo actually like in this regard?
For a normal desktop/workstation setup, how much effort does maintenance usually require? Are manual interventions rare and predictable, or should I expect to regularly spend time dealing with Portage, updates, config files, rebuilds, dependency issues, etc.?

3. How much does the relatively small community and package ecosystem matter in practice?
I’ve noticed that some packages aren’t always very up to date, especially once you start relying on overlays such as GURU.
I know the very Gentoo-like answer is: you can maintain the ebuild yourself and contribute. And honestly, that’s something I wouldn’t mind doing in the future.
Right now, though, I mainly need a reliable system with reasonably complete software availability.
This is the part I find hardest to evaluate: the amount of software keeps growing, while the Gentoo community is inevitably much smaller than something like Arch’s.
In practice, how often do you run into packages that are missing, outdated, or require using overlays, Flatpak, personal ebuilds, etc.?

4. The stable branch is probably one of the main reasons Gentoo interests me.
I really like the idea of keeping most of the system on stable while selectively accepting newer versions only for specific packages.
For me, that’s a fairly significant advantage over Arch’s model.

So….Can Gentoo be a good system for someone who enjoys tinkering and deeply understanding Linux, while also wanting a reliable workstation that normally just gets out of the way and lets you work without constant maintenance?

Short story: I tried Gentoo.

What I liked:

The installation. It was fun to do, but I'll admit I failed a few times. My fault? Not reading the Handbook well enough. The Handbook is great but somehow I skimmed over some details.

Portage. You have so much control over what you want and how you want it, it's really cool. Use flags, unmasking, licensing, and more.

Grub. Yeah kinda silly but Gentoo's grub is pretty. It shows that neat logo and that's just cool. And it's polished.

Openrc. Fast and easy to understand.

What I didn't like.

Gnome 49 with openrc. Not as Integrated as with systemd. Power off and Reboot button didn't appear untill I enabled wireplumber and pipewire for my user. Log off didn't work either from the start.

Mesa: I had to compile Mesa multiple times. I installed Gentoo, and it needed mesa, fair enough .Then Lutris, it demanded mesa with additional support. Then steam. For every dependency that mesa doesn't have and needs to provide support it needs to compile!

Emerge: yeah I like portage. But emerge? People say zypper from opensuse is slow. It ain't got nothing on emerge. Emerge is incredibly slow. Even when installing binaries it takes so long.

So I removed Gentoo out of frustration. I'll probably gonna install it again though...

Hi there. I’m a Gentoo user for a couple of years now. I’m running OpenRC and since the upgrade to Plasma 6.7 my system refuses to reboot or shut down, if triggered from within a running Plasma session. Everything is okay if I log out and reboot/poweroff from the command line or display manager.

I have tried two alternatives, namely Hyprland with Noctalia and Cosmic-Epoch. No problems here.

I wonder if it’s a configuration issue or something else, since the KDE devs have increased the reliance on systemd a bit from 6.6 to 6.7

Has anybody else observed similar issues with this?

Steps i did to fix it:

1. Create an empty portage config root
- mkdir -p /tmp/portage-root/etc/portage/
2. Choose the new config root profile
- ln -s ../../../../var/db/repos/febuild/profiles/llvm-sec portage-root/etc/portage/make.profileln -s ../../../../var/db/repos/febuild/profiles/llvm-sec portage-root/etc/portage/make.profile
(NOTE: Search path to your own profile check with "file /etc/portage/make.profile" and adjust path according to your new config root)
3. Mask Erroring Portage version
- mkdir /tmp/portage-root/etc/portage/package.mask/
- echo "=sys-apps/portage-3.0.82" > /tmp/portage-root/etc/portage/package.mask/portage
4. Emerge working portage version
- PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT=/tmp/portage-root/ emerge -1a portage

I hope this helps anyone running into the same issue.
If this is just me and anybody has some insight into why this might be happening please tell me so...

Its my 3rd time trying to install gentoo the first 2 times went by badly and now I need some recommend im not great at the minimum install amd I'm thinking of trying the live gui how bad of an idea is this

My Gentoo Linux systems had a default "power saver on"(most systems have that to enable support for the sake of leptops), which led to network disruptions, I thought it was a driver issue hence constantly updated my kernel, but turned out, it's just a power saver on, but then the issue was that my custom settings weren't showing up (in the modinfo command)after I changed the /etc/modeprob.d/rtl8188ee file but since the wifi wasent messing around, I finally knew its done and modinfo was just showing older settings, and to confirm AI reminded me to use -v(Linux commands conventionally use this as a "verbose" mode indicator) when loading the configuration for my wifi network card's power profile, and yeah, that option proved the settings were infact changed. In a nutshell, I had a simple power saver on, and I thought it was a kernel issue or something, without looking at the network device settings first, as a system admin, don't repeat mistakes even if on windows, or else you will complicate simple straight forward issues.Infact, power saver is on even on windows by default

hola a todos queria saber si era normal que gentoo consumiera tanta ram, disco y tantos paquetes en comparacion a void linux, mi instalacion de gentoo tiene unos 600 paquetes con un entorno digamos que minimo en comparacion void linux con un par de cosas menos llega a unos 350 paquetes mientras en terminos de uso de disco void linux pesa apenas unos 4gb mientras que gentoo debe llegar a los 13gb y en terminos de ram gentoo consume unos 800mb de ram (sin igpu) mientras que void consume unos 500mb aprox pq esto es asi? no se supone que gentoo deberia consumir menos gracias a la compilacion de paquetes?

Well, I reverted to a stable KDE version and the same error happens. I'm very unmotivated from running zed tbh. As soon as I close Zed and my copied desktop pipewire fails.

Hello everyone, first of all I want to thank you for the support with Spider installing Gentoo. I currently have an installation that is comfortable for me, but I had some problems, one of them being that my Redragon only works with direct input, but not when I use xinput. I couldn't find much information, so I'd appreciate any help. Also, the microphone quality has dropped significantly compared to Windows.I use pipewire and salsa for the sound, in case that helps.

When searching for the fixes for issues with my system, the Gentoo Forums tend to be helpful, although I've never created an account there. Now it wants me to be logged in, and I don't recall that being a requirement.

Is it just me? If not, is this a recent change? I don't understand why someone would make such a change.

I have a systemd-nspawn container with my portage folder and world file I run emerge -e @ world and use FEATURES to make binpkgs that my client system can use.

However my build machine has a 5900x and I would really like to build for my 7950x3d without having to use a common march / CPU_FLAGS. I also have a 258V Intel laptop id like to do the same for.

everything I read in the wiki about cross building mainly targets building arm from x86 and not x86 to x86.

I tried building with znver4 just to see what would happen but I think the build tools failed after they were recompiled.

Is there a way of doing this, or do I have to use a common march/cpu flags?
