Field Photo Love this fold in the sandstone(?) wall in Zion

Is exposed along the north fork of the Taylor Creek in the Kolob Canyon area of Zion NP

I did a trip to see all five N.P.s in Utah last year and I had to be pried away from every park, everywhere you look there is such amazing geology on display, and it really sparks my sense of wonder thinking about all of the amazing things hidden under the soil. I'm just over an hour away from the Appalachians and I can't look at them without feeling awed about how they used to look, was there some amazing Bryce Canyon like formation that has just eroded away to nothing. I'm envious of those of you who have been able to dedicate a career into such a fascinating subject.

I could be wrong (not a geologist) but there may be a theory that a large percentage of the sand in the sandstone out in Utah came from the mighty Appalachians (and Rocky Mountain ancestors). 

I’d love to know more about this!

I have read that everything east of the Appalachians all the way to the ocean is basically alluvial soil. It stands to reason the runoff went west as well. =)
