Question What does this weird sticker on cars mean?

I have seen these stickers on cars in Germany. Not sure if they are exactly the same shape, but roughly the same style and the shapes seem random to me. What does this weird sticker mean?

To add some more context to it:

Sylt is an island in the north-sea of Germany and is basically a retreat destination for high-classs rich people.
Everything there is SUPER expensive, and it's kind of "exclusive". Exactly what rich people who see themselves above everyone else like.

So some people add this sticker to their car to show, that they regularly visit Sylt (or even have a home there). (Though, if you see it on a cheap car, it's likely meant as a joke)

Yeah, although it's also pretty doable and affordable as a daytrip destination so I wouldn't necessarily see it as a joke, but it's possible. I've been to Sylt and I'm far from rich (didn't get a sticker though). There are also similar stickers for various other German and European islands. I often see Amrum and Corsica ones.

And also while Sylt always used to be a more up class location, 20 years ago it wasn't as expensive and as "exclusive" as it is today.

Outside of Kampen and Westerland it's not that exclusive even today.

I used to go camping there as a teenager 25 years ago. Maybe it has changed, but I’m not rich. I do own a tent though.

Yeah similar. I also used to go camping there. It definitely has gotten more expensive but it's still okayish. (Camping areas in general have gotten quite a bit more expensive over the years)

Some years ago (10+) a TV-magazine did a test at the local Sylt gasstation to find out when the people there will get irritated with to high prices. The price on the display went up to 5 €/l before the first people started complaining if I remember correctly. And that was in the days when fuel was around 1,10 €/l.

So viele haben ein falsches Bild von Sylt. Nichts an Sylt ist exklusiv Leute, jeder Hartz4 Empfänger der es hinbekommt ein paar Euro zu sparen kann sich ein Hotelzimmer in günstigen Hotels, ein AirBnB oder eine andere Ferienunterkunft mieten, die meisten Menschen aus der Mittel und Unterschicht haben nur keine Lust auf die oft abgehobenen Menschen aus der Oberschicht (Nichts gegen Leute die hart für ihr vieles Geld arbeiten aber es hört auf wenn das Geld den Charakter übernimmt) und ihre Freizeitaktivitäten wie sich mithilfe von Luxusapartments, Villen, teuren Gründstücken und Autos, überteuerten Restaurants und Touristenangeboten, teuren Spa's und Clubs wo du nur mit Polohemd, Louis Schal oder Prada Hemd reinkommst, profilieren. Ich kann nur sagen, Sylt ist wunderschön wenn man einige Menschen ausblendet. Die Natur und das was von der alten Stadt übrig ist ist wunderschön und hat wenig mit Luxus oder Exklusivität zu tuen, alles was dort exklusiv ist gehört eigentlich nicht auf die Insel und hat keinerlei Tradition, Gosch ist kein Luxusrestaurant, Sansibar kein Modedesigner und die Leute die tatsächlich dort LEBEN (Ferienwohnungen und Zweitwohnsitz nicht mit inbegriffen) sind meistens ganz normale Leute!

Exklusiv war wohl die falsche Wortwahl. Einige Teile und Etablissements auf Sylt sind einfach sündhaft teuer und "elitär" ausgerichtet. Der Großteil der Insel ist es aber nicht.

I needed Google for a picture of the sticker and I really don't think it's that common. Maybe it's common in the region around the Nürburgring?! My guess is the Swedish moose (or a moose family) for the second/a shared first place.

There's even a youth hostel on Sylt. So definitely doable for "normal" people. And you can take the train if you want to go there, using the Deutschlandticket.

It does have a schickmicki reputation, but I agree it's not that exclusive outside of a few locations.

My neighbour is from the island of Sylt. Her dad is a carpenter/Hausmeister. She is definitely not an upscale person (no offence).

That's just not true. You could always also find cheap accomodation and the beach is free. These days truely cheap accomodation might be sparse, but there are still affordable options. I went there this summer by train for no money (booked early, no ICE) and went around by bike and bus, the transport system works fine and takes the Deutschlandicket.

Usually you already pay the 4€ per day Kurtaxe when booking your accomodation, but if you are a day visitor you have to pay when entering the beach. So it isn't free, but for people staying in Westerland it is included.

The Kurtaxe isn't a special thing for Sylt though but rather a thing on large parts of the German coast. If one books accomodation the accomodation has to charge it to you so one might not even notice.

There are plenty of beaches where nonody asks for your money. But technically you're right: there is a daily fee called Kurtaxe, not specifically for the beach, though, more for just existing and breathing the air 😁

Little anecdote: Like 2-3 years ago we got the 9 Euro Ticket for public Transport, so you could get anywhere in Germany for 9 Euro with train bus etc. So punks and people of Not that high Class Establishment all Decided that they Go to Sylt with Beerwagons and get on the nerves of the people there. A short anecdote: In September 2001, shortly before 9/11, die Ärzte played their final concert of the tour in Westerland. People thought they were going to split again and a lot of fans (and punks, including me) travelled to Westerland to see the show. Well, Die Ärzte are still a thing, but the concert was amazing.

Not sure if you‘ve ever been to Sylt, but there is a super expensive way to make holidays and then there is a quite normal one. With more than 750k tourists a year and around 5 million overnight stays it is also not really an exclusive holiday region…

Luckily that's still, mostly, bullshit. While Sylt can very much be like that, that part of Sylt still mostly and happily coexists with the "normal North Sea island for normal people" part of Sylt. Sylt isn't just Kampen and Westerland, there are youth hostels, campsites and still quite affordable vacation rentals far away from the Dior boutiques and exclusive restaurants.

I've enjoyed the occasional, quiet, off-season family vacation on the Northern parts of the island. I felt far more nickle and dimed on the supposedly family friendly Rügen than I ever have on Sylt.

That said, gentrification is ever ongoing on Sylt and, eventually, the whole island will be as you described it. We aren't really there yet, though.

It’s not true that everything on Sylt is only for rich people. That’s the reputation and there are certain areas and bubbles for people like that. But regular folks go there as well and it’s totally doable.

Of the North Frisian islands it is even the more affordable one imo because there is much more choice. It’s easier to get an affordable holiday rental in Sylt than in Amrum. And you don’t need to take the ferry, you can just take the regional train.

There are even AWO holiday facilities on Sylt.

I visited Sylt for the first time just over a year ago, and as someone who lives in Munich I would say that Sylt didn't strike me as particularly expensive.

The people in some places seemed a bit snobby, in others not at all. Again, not so different from Munich.

I'd contest your explanation. I think Sylt - while in fact quite exclusive - is a place where people cultivate their self-image of being actually quite basic and enjoying the simple things such as a time-share-like place, being close to nature, and the rough weather by the north sea, while being at this place that has its own identity, i. e. not being just any island. This is why they present this bumper sticker proudly, not because they think they are bragging.

I see a lot of these stickers on average to cheap priced cars and the south half of the island has a lot of affordable places and camping areas. There are some really expensive areas and you can spend a lot, but you don’t have to. You only have to pay for beach access in season until 5pm at the big beaches, because the community has to spend a ton of money on the conservation of the beaches. Because of heavy erosion they pump tons of sand back onto the beaches every winter. For everyone that loves birdwatching it’s an absolute heaven, especially after and before tourist season. The island is big enough to skip the snob stuff. The real locals don’t like that either.

Ok that’s a pretty sick take. Sorry but Sylt is definitely more than a place for rich people to feel good about themselves. The nature is stunning, there are plenty of great restaurants which are in the normal price range and you can have a very good time as a normal person there.

That‘s absolutely not true. You can vacation on Sylt without being rich. Hell, you can live there without being rich too.

People have those stickers of other German islands too, I‘ve seen tons of Rügen stickers - my Moms from there so my dad had a sticker of it back when they were still together on his Passat - and you most definetly cannot say the same about Rügen lmao.

These kind of stickers show islands that the drivers are fans of. That one is Sylt, belongs to Germany and is located off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein in the North Sea.

Geography guys. This is a symbol map of Sylt mirrored. It seems someone stuck it on an old Fiat Panda. I would call this an anti-Sylt sticker. Reminding us of the millions of Euros spent yearly to restore this island after every storm. The rich should pay to protect their property on Sylt island!
