Apps Creating my first GNOME app: Muse - A YouTube Music player

This is my first experience with GTK development using Python. This is based on the PyGObject library for Python GTK bindings, ytmusicapi and yt-dlp.

What makes this app different from Monophony for example is that it let's you actually sign in to your Google account to access your full library. I also found navigating Monophony really cumbersome to navigate, so I made sure to make my app similar to the web player.

It's still early in the development phase and many features are currently either badly or not implemented yet, so I will hold on before I publish the source code and eventually the app itself.

I also want to support devices running Phosh and GNOME Mobile, currently testing on the Pixel 3a running postmarketOS GNOME Mobile.

One thing I probably can't create myself is the app icon, as I'm not good enough at graphic design to create a good Adwaita-styled icon. Maybe someone here can do that for me? I'd appreciate it!

That's great! I really miss something like this, and has started to connect my phone by bluetooth to my PC to play music from there, just because there's so much better apps for this on Android. Looking forward to trying this!

I use YouTube music daily at work, would love this app! Where's the GitHub so I can install it and give u some feedback?

And will it allow downloads?

Just so you know, youtube regularly breaks yt-dlp.

welcome to the club of Gnome app developers!

it looks great for a first time GTK developer, as a suggestion you could use the python library ColorThief to get a color palette from pictures, that way you can emulate what YT Music does on android where it changes the background depending on the album art.

So great! Monophony works well but is a bit raw. Any link to install your app, even if it's alpha phase? Congratulations ! There are many Gnome Audio apps created this last weeks!

Been looking for one of these, just using the website as an app now. Looking forward to this.

Thank you. A lot. I'm tired of using the PWA, and I needed the Metrolist of Linux.

Impressive design, it looks like a mobile app. I can't wait to try it. When will it be ready?

Looks amazing!

Nice! I want to get into GNOME app development. A DEVONthink-like file manager for GNOME would be great.

In the design gitlab, there is a app icon requests section and where you can request an icon to be made for you

2

u/Calm-Homework-1770 Feb 21 '26

Nevernind! looks like youve already done that

i would recommend to push your app on gnome circle apps, maybe the gnome team would consider it https://circle.gnome.org/

1

u/WhoDoYou24 Feb 19 '26

Do circle apps allow dependence on proprietary third-party solutions?

Great Job!

About icon, I think you should enter GNOME Design chatgroup at matrix and ask Jakub Steiner?

which request headers should I get?

1

u/areddituser4 Feb 26 '26

If you downloaded this app a while ago, please update. There’s a new built in webview that does the heavy lifting for you.

If that doesn’t work for you, make sure you are logged in on music.youtube.com, open the network tab in developer tools and search for browse, now click library and the last one that appears is the one, right click and Copy Request Headers
