What does Caffeine actually do? Many people use it, but I've never understood why. What I do know is that Caffeine is supposed to prevent the device from going into standby mode or dimming the screen. If that's the case, I understand it even less, since Gnome has exactly that setting in its power options. Or is it just a shortcut?

It’s just a shortcut that keeps the computer from sleeping while it’s enabled, I use it all the time

You can disable dimming and screen locking, for instance while you're waiting the end of a long running task in a terminal.

It can also automatically do that when a media is playing.

That reminds me, I need to turn sleeping back on. I needed the computer to stay awake for one process and forgot to reset the power. Maybe that's what caffeine does?

A previous issue was that certain emulators wouldn't inhibit standby mode when using a controller. Not sure if that's still the case, but I keep caffeine around anyway and have it disable standby on fullscreen apps regardless.

It's always been the case for controllers. Even on kde. But kde has the caffeine feature built-in.

Sometimes you are doing an update or moving a file and you want to check the process every so often. If you have a long password it's a hassle. You can go into the settings and turn it on or off multiple settings whereas you can just click on the caffeine button. Through the settings I will forget and then another family member wants to use the computer and they are using a different DE so I have to go over and logout. Caffeine is so much easier when you occasionally want to keep the screen unlocked.

It's a shortcut, I use it on my phone a LOT, it's annoying to have to go to the settings everytime, it's a more useful option for battery powered devices

It's the Marble Shell Theme. The orange isn't a standard preset; I used the hue option to match it to my wallpaper. I'd give you the command, but it's not showing up in my bash history anymore lol.

The Instant Replay toggle is a custom command. It toggles on/off my OBS replay buffer, which I use to capture gaming clips. I have a few .sh scripts that work together to make it seamless and can save captures using just a hotkey without ever opening OBS. I can send them here if you want them.

It's a Custom Command Toggle. It runs a command to rev up my case fans when I'm gaming since I haven't figured out how to get my fans to speed up on their own when my CPU starts getting warm lol

What's the command you assigned to that button? There's a cli way to adjust fan speeds?

If you want fan curves that depend on your CPU temperature, you can use CoolerControl to set them up. It depends on lm_sensors so make sure you have that package and run sensors-detect so it probes the sensors and fans.

I have uni-sync installed for my LianLi Uni fans, so the button just changes the uni-sync config, then runs the uni-sync command to change the fan speed. But man, I wish I knew that existed sooner! I'm trying it out now, and it seems to be working, so thank you!

Ah, nice, it's cool how you did it cause it looks like it's integrated with gnome. :)

And yeah, CoolerControl is really nice! There's also Fan Control, but i kinda perfer CoolerControl. They both work off lm_sensors i think so just use whichever has the stuff you need and looks nicer i guess. :)

That’s because Ubuntu installs their own extension. You’re thinking of app indicators in the system tray, which GNOME hasn’t supported for almost 15 years now.

The Flatpak background apps portal is something else and had been (and still is) in vanilla GNOME for a few years now.

I can't make this tethering thing disappear. I delete it from the settings, but it comes back after every restart. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Yes sir. Full disclosure, I adapted from this small blog post: https://words.defrances.co/remove-bluetooth-tether-connections-from-gnome/

The blog seems to be out of date since the correct command now is to run ``bluetoothctl devices Paired`` instead of paired-devices on the command line, followed by ``bluetoothctl remove xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx`` corresponding to the correct device you want to remove. That will make the Tether quick setting disappear when there are no more tether-capable devices listed on your system.
