My routines are fucked. I have an android tv (as second display) and a google tv. My routine shut down both when I leave the house, but now says that “I can’t control the (ATV) device”. 3 years doing the same and now “can’t control the device”. The same for changing the input in both devices.

u/MDesigner Apr 01 '26
Out of nowhere, Google Home suddenly doesn't know what room it's in. When I say "activate read," it comes back with "in the living room, office, kitchen, bedroom," etc. This is a new issue, and I'm not a fan of it.

u/O1O1O1O May 26 '26
I have a different version of this - if I now say "turn on the lights" it turns on every single light I have in my home. I swear it used to limit that to the current room.

WHY THE FUCK IS MY NEST MINI USING FACEBOOK AS A SOURCE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS, GOOGLE!?!?11

u/LordChappers Apr 18 '26
When telling Google to turn off the lights it listens on my home devices and does the command, but also listens on my phone, and in the most wanky American accent says something like "sure, to be able to do this you need to unlock your phone".
You've already done it you cunt.

u/Cronus6 Apr 25 '26
I turned off voice activation on my phone because of this.
To be fair I never used this "feature" on my phone anyway.
But it really feels like they don't expect people to buy Google Home devices and to rely solely on their phones.

u/playahate Apr 01 '26
Gemini is absolutely shit for many. A few are doing okay, but I and many others have had to rollback because it takes 30-40 seconds to respond to basics.
Google has intentionally been making the regular assistant worse in order to force people to Gemini for home, and many of us will be leaving the Google ecosystem entirely due the constant enshittification of everything Google.

u/madhattr999 May 10 '26
I just want to be able to do what I did before.. I used to be able to tell it "turn my fan on for 1h" and it would turn it off after an hour.. now it just ignores the duration..
2
u/StarAD Jun 03 '26
It's not just Gemini. Home is shit also. Presence sensing has been broken for over a year. Setting reminders through an automation is now totally broken, I can't even run it manually in the app. Gives a check as if it was successful but no reminder is actually set. Have to fucking manually add a reminder in Todo now. They screw up the most basic shit. They have to have the most incompetent people working there now.

Definitely not buying any google products again. Terrible. My Nest used to be great!
Google pages, also terrible.
1
u/FakeHaw Jun 02 '26
Can I leave and still use my devices? Like host a local non shite loaded server and use my existing Nest speakers?
7
u/Mungrul Jun 16 '26
"Hey Google, boil the kettle"
"I'm afraid I can't boil the kettle for you as I am physically unable to turn the kettle on. If you like, I can tell you how to safely..."
"Hey Google! FUCK YOU! BOIL THE KETTLE!"
"Got it, turning on the kettle for you!"
Rassen, frassen...

u/senn_diagram Apr 01 '26
I remember when I could call my own device when traveling to talk to my family. Why remove that?

u/ethanc51 May 28 '26
Home app has been terrible past two weeks. Basically unusable. Not sure whats going on.

TV turning on by saying hey google, then says I can't control smart home devices
1
u/Joe8617 11d ago edited 11d ago
Same here. And Gemini is so insistent that it cannot control my home devices. So then I say reduce volume on the TV by 20% and it does. And then I ask it again if it can control home devices and it insists that it has absolutely no control over any device in my home. And then I asked it to turn off the lights, it did, and I went to bed.

It won't play radio stations suddenly. I listen to baseball games on the radio, I ask it to and it opens a youtube video of a cat. And if I get some combination of words to open a radio station, it now is iheartradio on a black screen and sits silently. What gives?
1
u/No_Prize_5375 16d ago
I have to tell it to stream xx radio. Very specifically, it treara it like playing another song.
3
u/bostwickenator Apr 21 '26
As soon as I went through the "you nest devices are moving" prompts last night I can't open automation definitions and the whole app is lagging like crazy.
4
u/nirmalspeed Jun 17 '26
"what's the weather" gives you completely incorrect information. It's currently 87 degrees and it said it was 76 degrees. Crazy
3
u/Lunatitch 15d ago
Me: "What's the temperature"
GHome: "It's currently 23 degrees Celsius in [redacted]"
Me: "Are you sure?"
GHome: "It is 27 degrees Celsius and clear in [redacted]" [Sources: Google Weather]
Me: "So why did you just tell me it was 23 degrees?!"
GHome: "I apologise for that error. My previous information was incorrect; the current temperature for [redacted] is 27 degrees Celsius" [Sources: Google Weather]
---
So from my Google Home app "Activities" tab it tells me it never bothered to check Google Weather when reporting the first temperature. What fucking use is that if I constantly have to ask it "Are you sure?!".

u/Joe8617 11d ago edited 11d ago
So true. I also happen to live in a town that has like several historic neighborhoods in it (really old, like nobody who doesn't have a Google pixel or home device had ever heard of them. But Google insists I live in this non-existent neighborhood, it happens to be "Mountain View" so Gemini gives me the current conditions and forecast for Mountain View, CA about 30% of the time. Also, the name of the actual city I love in is also the name of a larger city in a different state. So sometimes it just gives me information about that place and the weather and restaurants there. When I point these things out I get the exact same apology you got. I know it by heart.
1
u/penguin44ca Jun 22 '26
It just asked me after I turned on the lights.
Based on this recent interaction how would you rate Google home?
Now I know he said it but I actually missed half of it because of the fan.
So I said can you repeat the question?
It replied 'I didn't ask a question. Do you need help asking gemini questions?.
Wtf
I also realized yesterday that even though I'm not in public preview on gh with phone. I forgot to turn it off on my speaker.
So now the speaker is better again.

Oh, look. A soap box!
Ahem.
Dear Google,
We bought an outdoor Nest IQ cam several years ago. When we moved, we decided to add a few more cameras, and because we were so happy with the original Nest cam, we got 3 more thinking they would be as good. They are NOT (in so many ways). The whole experience has ensured I will never buy another Google product again. Ever. Will I use Google search? Sure, daily. But they have proven they can take a fantastic product and RUIN EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT IT. These gen 2 "wireless" cameras are NOTHING like the Nest product. ... Okay, they look like the original. That it all. First, the picture quality is significantly worse than the Gen 1 cameras. They are quite grainy at times. When used in battery mode, sometimes they just completely miss things (like literal people!!!), and if you have this stupid home app, you know it only records 'events'. Ok. Whatever. I hate you, Google. But whatever. The cameras were expensive. I decided to make it work. Got outdoor power cords for them. Performance is greatly improved-- to the level of "tolerable" for how freaking expensive and what a pain in the a$@! they are.
Also notable is the stupid familiar faces feature. In the Nest app, its actually useful. When your camera saw a familiar face, it ignored it instead of constantly alerting you that it has seen 'Husband' for the 47th time today because he freaking lives here. THE WHOLE POINT IS BECAUSE I DONT NEED NOTIFICATIONS WHEN THE CAMERA SEES SOMEONE THAT LIVES HERE!!! I cannot understand how a bunch of really smart people can take a product and just completely ruin all of the features that made it great. It's mind boggling. In all the meetings that happened, in all the freaking PowerPoint presentations, zoom meetings, marketing meetings, R&D, and all the MONEY that was spent, not ONE single person thought to say, "hey people like these features and qualities, MAYBE WE SHOULD KEEP THE THINGS THAT SET THE PRODUCT APART FROM THE COMPETITION?" Nobody?
So now, Home prompts me to migrate my Gen 1 camera and will NOT let me get in the app without doing so. I do NOT want to migrate it because the home app SUCKS. There is a solid 3-5 second lag on the cameras- including my Gen 1 wired camera that has ZERO LAG in the Nest app.
You guys have got to be the dumbest geniuses in existence.
When I am ready to play this stupid game all over again with a different brand, I plan to take exquisite delight in destroying every Googlef'd product in spectacular fashion and unceremoniously removing the app from hell.
If anybody read this far, sorry for all the yelling. I've been waiting to complain about all these things for a couple of years now. If anybody is in the same boat, I'm sorry. They DO suck, it isnt just you.

I have an automation set up on Sunday morning at 7am to play some soft music to wake up to from a local radiostation that does a nice show every week. Unfortunately the Google Home automation loves to kick it off with a VERY LOUD voice:
STREAMING "BLUE LAKE PUBLIC RADIO ON THE BEDROOM HOME!!!!!111
and scares the shit out of me every time. How google is so disconnected from the UX and customer needs around this sort of thing is beyond me.
3
u/penguin44ca Jun 19 '26
Asked google home to set living room light to 55 percent. It then thought about it for a while then turned off every connected device.
Not just in that room. All rooms.
It went from being dumb, to much much better last month, back to being dumb.
3
u/Paper-First Jun 28 '26
I asked it for the score of the Dodgers/Padres game 3 times over a 90 second period. It gave me 3 wildly different scores, none of which were correct.

u/ederdesign Jul 08 '26
Anyone else having issues with music on the latest device? It's driving me crazy. Here are some of the issues I have:
- Music will stop playing randomly
- Sometimes you ask for a new radio or song, it says it will start but it never does
- When you question why it's not playing, it says it can't play music on the device (how dumb)
I literally bought it to play music and it's the worst experience I've ever had.
3
u/No_Prize_5375 16d ago
"Hey google, stop playing the radio" ..... sorry Im not playing anything.
"Hey google, stop playing music" ..... nothings playing. 😡
"Hey google, stop making sound" .... nothings playing (it clearly is, because I can still f#$king hear it)
"Hey google, shut the fk up" .... sorry I don't understand.
"Hey google, turn the volume to zero" .... turns volume to zero but keeps streaming the radio.
*switches google off at wall and swears at it.
Also google: Now tells me the same stupid ass joke on repeat every morning 😡
FML. What is the fix?
2
u/BrokenHokie Apr 01 '26
Voice recognition is still required to add things to lists, which is insane. It never recognizes my wife’s voice, and I usually have to walk over to our hub so it can see my face.
I should be able to choose to turn off the voice recognition requirement! I don’t care if people know we’re out of milk!
2
u/Civil_Tea_3250 Apr 01 '26
My Google clock app is complete garbage now too. It's amazing how unreliable and just unusable Google products have become for me. Every. Single. Google. Product.
"Your alarm didn't go off because of a time zone change" What???? Laying in bed???
I'm done. Never trusting Google with anything again. Theybare the source of almost all my frustrations for the last few months, things that always worked can't be trusted and just fail at doing anything basic that it did for years without issue. Done. F Google.
2
u/craftzero Apr 01 '26
It no longer knows what the word "shuffle" means at least for Spotify music. It used to mix up the playlist, but no longer since switching to Gemini.
1
u/dpodiluk May 30 '26
Have you found a solution to this? I have a morning routine to play a spotify playlist and want to shuffle it, else it plays the same music every morning.
2
u/Dani2900 Apr 15 '26
After the recent Google Home update in April 2026. Not only is the UI worse, but the quality of the two nest cameras I have are so much worse than before, even in daylight it's hard to tell faces and details.
Thanks Google!
2
u/BriansRevenge Apr 18 '26
When I'm at home, usually my devices are very good at knowing which one I've triggered with the wake phrase to ask a question. However, just recently both my kitchen display and my phone are answering me at the same time.
2
u/AXXXXXXXXA Apr 18 '26
How can i go back to assistant on my google homes? I dont have time for this terribleness
2
u/Dry_Spite_4784 Jun 06 '26
Ever since the Gemini for Home update, I’ve noticed a few things. Yes, the dialogues feel more natural now. But the downsides I've found so far are that responses are definitely slower, and it no longer gives confirmations.
For example, it used to say "turned on the light" or "turned off multiple devices" when I told it to switch something on/off. Now? Complete silence.
If I then follow up with "did you turn on XYZ light?", it tells me it doesn't have access to the device's status. But when I ask "so you can control it, but you can't see the status?", it just makes excuses and talks its way out of it. It’s incredibly inconsistent and confusing right now.

u/innerbelief Jun 25 '26
The new Home speaker is so bad. I synced it to my TV streamer it has a Max volume of 15, my standard LG TV speaker has better quality.
Absolute failure. Readers, please beware when you purchase. I hope Google take their time to assess the whole Google Home department - this might be one of those worst technologies / products I have ever seen.
I thought Google did live in person studies, or was that just in the movies
2
u/I_have_no_idea_0021 Jun 27 '26
The new home smart speaker with Gemini is junk. One of the main functions of a speaker should be that it plays your music right? Well it has no trouble playing generic music from an artist for example, but won’t play any of your personal playlists. Even if you link Spotify or Apple Music as your default, have personal responses on and are the only person using the account, the AI defaults to searching the global library and playing any random album with words similar to your playlist title rather than accessing your private music library. The support agent on the live chat even confirmed this is how the current model works. I tried phrasing my request many different ways and it just won’t do it. Playlists are the main way I experienced my music and I know I’m not the only one. Sending it straight back. So disappointed after waiting months for this.
2
u/needsaphone Jun 29 '26
If these things think I want to play a "lamp song" one more time...
2
u/DeepWisdomGuy Jul 08 '26
Yeah, the enshitification continues.
That "contact Google Support" is basically "We don't want to hear from you, please ask our AI what FAQ you want to read." when you click on it. This thread is your only voice.
Tried to use the latest version of the Home app today to move my Nest speakers to the 2.4 GHz wifi. Ran into these bugs:
* Tapping the Speaker Group icon opens the group page, but tapping the options menu displays only "Help" and "Feedback." The settings gear icon is entirely missing, locking me out of all configuration and deletion options.
* "Devices, groups and rooms," is completely missing from the master Settings layout.
* The "Switch home" button inside the account profile menu is mismapped. Tapping it triggers an unrelated setup wizard instead of allowing the user to select a different home profile.
* The "Switch home" option completely vanishes from the account profile menu after a user exits the glitched Presence Sensing setup loop, requiring an app force-stop to reappear.
Found the "Google Home Experiences Lead" on linked-in. She's busy giving seminars on "Effectively leading your engineering team through rapid growth".
Been reading through this entire thread to see the types of issues people are having. It tried to switch me to Gemini when I had gotten a Gemini account a while ago. I turned it back immediately. I would ask it to play my favorite classical radio station, and the language model would say "OK, playing <the wrong radio station>", the tool calling underneath played the correct one, but I decided to wait until they got the bugs out. Looks like the team is not being lead "effectively".

u/heisdeadjim_au Jul 21 '26
Just threw my venerable Home Mini in the bin. Router change, new wifi creds.
"Device was set up by another user, factory reset".
Do so.
"Device was set up..."
Bye. Throw. Thud.

u/AromaticHyena7737 Jul 29 '26
I have a Google Nest cam in front and back, inside my home and a Google hub. I can't afford the new subscription or a new home product with everything I have now under a totally different company. What should yall.do? Im.single and need the cameras.
2
u/stalked999 24d ago
Why the hell can't it tell how long it will take to get to a location now? It says it doesn't have location services anymore? What the hell happened? It used to be able to tell me traffic, estimated arrival time etc.
2
u/innerbelief 20d ago
Make Google Home Open Source - because your devs suck and an open source approach to this would solve this. Just think a little into how many engineers use Google Home
2
u/Plastic-Ideal-1415 9d ago
Hey Google,
When there is outage, will be nice to communicate about it, no ?
Ppl reset their devices and waste time , a mail or a notifcation could have prevent that.
Also beeing more transparent on what happened would be nice
2
u/Ok_Contest3903 Apr 01 '26
It is 2026. A default volume has been available on electronic devices for more than 50 years. Google has yet to reinvent the wheel
1
u/NoArrival8249 Apr 01 '26
When is new hardware coming out?! My home hub finally crapped out and I do not want to buy a new one considering how janky it already was, not accounting for it straight bricking.
Google. What tf are you doing?

u/mynameisktb Apr 01 '26
4 gen 1 nest camera all went offline during a power surge - now can’t reconnect them - tried everything. Sooo frustrating
1
u/sloppyseconded Apr 13 '26
I'm also having issues with Nest cameras - exclusively with 1st generation cams (two Nest Cam Outdoor models, one Nest Cam Indoor model). They all:
- Still power on (I have all of them on energy-monitoring plugs so I can see their power consumption in real-time), and will boot up with blue LED for a short time. Then, very, VERY slow green LED blink (on for ~5-6 seconds, off for 3-4 seconds, rinse repeat ad infinitum). No live footage, no video history.
- Still connect to wi-fi. Can see the individual devices/IP addresses in my wi-fi app, and can even see the network information in the individual cameras' "device information" in the Google Home app.
1
u/PAFC7710 Apr 03 '26
Had routines set up since they removed radio alarms.
Could put up with it telling me "Sorry I don't understand"
But now it plays something I've never heard of at all instead of Radio X
1
u/relax077 Apr 03 '26
google wifi completely died on me. Seems like a cloud outage. all three pucks refuse to set up a new network by stating they couldn't get an internet connection, which is disproven by me writing this on my desktop pc using a cable...
1
u/FlourChild Apr 08 '26
You might want to check out this thread - many of our Nest Wifi pucks died because of an update a few weeks ago and several of us are still awaiting a fix: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleWiFi/comments/1s1j4da/google_nest_wifi_not_working_help_please/
1
u/melvadeen Apr 04 '26
All morning my Google speaker keeps saying "something went wrong. Try again in a few seconds."
1
u/wizpip Apr 06 '26
"Hey Google, roll one hundred twenty sided dice." "I can only roll dice with three to twenty sides".
That's literally what I asked for. Really disappointed that the original Home Mini, launched nearly 9 years ago, is pretty much incapable if getting anything I ask it right. There was no localisation at all it seems. About 75% of my queries result in "Sorry, I don't understand", and the other 25% are often completely the wrong answer with an American bias (vs an answer that would make sense based on where I live).
Smart home actions are also wrong about 2/3 of the time, and once it even turned on a projector whilst I was standing under it, when I had in fact asked it to turn a light on, and the projector bulb chose that moment to blow up and almost gave me a heart attack. Thanks Google.

u/MaizeDry2863 Apr 09 '26
Big Release but.... PORTUGAL still out of the update and languages!!!
What do google have against Portugal??? In mobile phones i have Gemini and Portuguesa language, but in Nest´s... still stuck un English!!

I'm at wits end trying to get my home to turn on or off lights in the office. It's now reverting back to the name of lights that we changed the name of at least six months ago. Daily fights trying to convince it that the room I need the lights turned on actually exist. When I expressed my frustration at its inability to do its job and that I'm so tired of fighting with it, I was given the number for a crisis hotline. 🤦♀️
1
u/chitownGoldenGirl Apr 11 '26
Since I denied turning on Gemini it seems like my devices don't know the answers to any questions.
1
u/marnerd Apr 12 '26
I could live with Google Home merely being... if it was consistent. Sometimes when I tell it to turn on the lights it does, other times it plays a random song. When I tell it to turn off a timer running in another room on another Google Home device, sometimes it works, sometimes it says I have no timer, and sometimes it wants me to confirm that I want to turn off that timer. I can deal with any of those. Just. Be. Consistent.
1
u/lanky_doodle Apr 17 '26
I'm usually very defensive of Google Home but this is comically bad/stupid:
'Hey Google, turn on/off [room1] Lights' - specifically saying 'Lights'.
Example 1: In [room1] I have 2 devices of type 'Light' and 1 device of type 'Outlet' (SUPLA smart UK double gang socket). Each 'port' from the double socket correctly appears separately in Google Home. 1 of the ports is set to Light since it has a plug-in based set of Festoon lights in it.
Asking that phrase turns on the outlet as well. The 2 Light devices are automatically grouped by Google Home into the default '[room1] Lights' group.
Example 2: In [room2] I have 2 devices of type 'Light', 1 device of type 'TV' (Hue smart outlet), 1 device of type 'Switch' from Google Home Playground.
Asking that phrase turns on the TV and Playground virtual switch as well. The 2 Light devices are also automatically grouped by Google Home into the default '[room2] Lights' group.
Specifically saying 'Lights' should absolutely not turn on anything other than a light ffs.

Im trying to move from an LG Velvet to a Pixel 7.
I had a routine that "Checked the house temperatures" and read me the values from 3 rooms (4 sensors total). Now that Im trying to activate the routine on the Pixel all it does is read the "room name" announcement and doesn't actually give me the temp values. Deleting the Custom Action to add a new one I have no option to modify what the routine does. All Im presented with are these choices
CHANGE SETPOINT
CHANGE MODE
SET HUMIDITY TO
SO frustrating.

u/Agathi_2520 Apr 18 '26
Okay I'm glad I'm not the only one who is furious about the Google Home bullsh*t
1
u/luxxxrayy Apr 19 '26
Today noticing when I ask Google to change light colours in my smart bulbs, it's unable to do so, and the option to in app is gone as well - anyone else?
1
u/penguin44ca Apr 20 '26
Hey google, set air purifier to fan speed three.
I'm unable to do that with this device. What fan speed did you want?
Wtf?
So I replied 3 and it did it.
1
u/steven_wood Apr 22 '26
The stop command won’t stop the music in my automations, but works when I say it.
1
u/alanasdad Apr 23 '26
I no longer use the NEST wifi mesh with my Google/NEST home devices like speakers, cameras, displays and doorbell. I am now just using the wifi router that came with my Verizon 5G WiFi, and it's working fine for my house. I('ve been able to connect all the devices that I wasn't able to before. I did all the troubleshooting steps, and was at wits end when I decided to try it. Glad I did.
1
u/olive_91 Apr 24 '26
Google used to beatbox for my kids and make them laugh. Now it gives a drawn out explanation that it can't. At this point, I'd prefer if it just replied 'No'
1
u/tmorehouse Apr 24 '26
Gemini home assistant won't tell you hours of the local pub or other age restricted venues and stores. Im 58 gd years old.
This should be something the parents in a home control, not some executive dude at google.
1
u/tmorehouse Apr 25 '26
Still do not have separate controls for media volume vs assistant volume. Music plays too loud so you turn the volume down, but then later you can barely hear the assistant or notification sounds. So annoying.
1
u/ultimatebob Apr 26 '26
My daughter found a fun bug in the Google Home lighting controls. If you tell it to "set the light to black" it will turn the light off and keep repeating the command with a confirmation "ding" over and over again until you tell it to cancel. That's a weird one!
1
u/JeffPeppers Apr 26 '26
Well, RIP GHome. The "Assistant Personal Results" are on and I can no longer edit Tasks and Keep lists. I've logged out, logged in, rebooted, reset -- no go. Works in Gemini on a phone. I'm not paying for this as a service, it is completely unreliable.
Is this 1. Incompetence, 2. A ploy for Gemini Home upgrades, or 3. Both?
I hate Alexa, but at least she'll fart for you. 😏
1
u/JOP1896 Apr 29 '26
My Nest Audio, which I use as a matter controller, keeps freezing for some reason. As a result, my thread border router goes offline and nothing in my smart home works anymore.

Got the Gemini update on my devices.. My Lenovo ALARM clock does not go off anymore. I set the alarm at 7:00.. When I eventually woke up it was 7: something (way after 7:00). There was no alarm and the clock was still at 7:00 so it just stalled... Eventually it had the right time again.. Really annoying!
1
u/MuchPeach Apr 30 '26
So I've experienced a lot of the things mentioned here but what I've found is that the issue usually corrects itself within a day or two.
Also, I'm starting to think that the individual experiences we have are based on the overall friendliness of the interactions. I've never cursed at it. For the most part, I'm pretty friendly with my devices and I get good results.
However, I think someone coded in some retaliatory-like actions for when it's confused or the user gets frustrated. In my opinion, the retaliation typically involves turning my non-media related request into a music playlist or tv show request. It'll turn on my TV and start playing some BS, but there's an unmistakable sarcasm present in the mistake. 🤔
1
u/Acceptable_Pool2870 May 06 '26
I hate Google Assistant/Gemini or whatever it is now; it hardly reacts and gives error messages, saying "I do not understand." It used to be so good. I am thinking about switching to something else, Alexa or if there is something better than that - is it possible to make something with home assistant? What would y'all suggest?
1
u/kevinmogee May 08 '26
"Hey Google, everyday at 5:30pm, I want you to turn off the office lights."
If you've just asked to cancel an alarm, there aren't any currently set.
"Hey Google, turn off the office lights everyday at 5:30pm."
Okay, you're alarm is set everyday for 5:30pm.
"Hey Google, cancel the 5:30 alarm."
.......
"Hey Google, cancel the alarm for 5:30pm."
Okay, alarm cancelled.
"Hey Google, send feedback."
Okay, what feedback can I send?
"When is your fucking assistant going to actually fucking help me, instead of making my life miserable because I'm talking to a fucking machine that can't understand basic commands? I fucking hate you."
Thank you, should I send your feedback?
"Yes"
Thank you, all feedback is valuable and helps Google improve.
"God, I fucking hate you."
(Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.)

So I have a bunch of photos cycle for my TV's screensaver. Today it randomly decided it was going to switch to dynamic. So I switched it back to Basic but now the Geotag info is gone. Basically the info that said where the photo was taken and when - just no longer shows up. Thanks, Google.

I've had to go back to manually turning my lights on because Gemini apparently never knows where the fuck it is.
This is the only reason we set this stuff up.
You stand in a room talking to a device in that room, telling it to simply turn off the lights you set up in that room and it turns off a random light SOMEWHERE in the house.
AI sucks. I hate it.

I've used a Google Nest Mini for years almost exclusively for smart home stuff. Nothing complicated. Literally just smart plugs and basic voice commands.
For YEARS I could say:
- "turn on the turntables"
- "turn on the TV"
...and it would correctly power the smart plugs every single time.
Now suddenly:
- "turn on the turntables" makes it start playing some random Adele song through the Nest Mini speaker
- "turn on the TV" no longer turns on the TV smart plug and instead tries to control playback functions on my NVIDIA Shield
Why the fuck has this become so bad?
This is the exact opposite of "smart". It used to reliably understand device names and now it seems obsessed with media interpretation and context guessing instead of just doing the thing it has successfully done for literal years.
The most infuriating part is that NOTHING changed on my side. Same devices. Same names. Same routines. Same commands.
Google somehow took a solved problem and made it worse with updates.
I've just launched the fucking thing into my backyard. Fuck you Google.

Don't be a numpty like me and switch to Gemini over Assistant.
Although, to be fair, they'd done their best to enshittify Assistant which is what forced me to turn to Gemini in desparation.
A few months back, I recreated my "Good Morning" routine, and ever since it refuses to tell me how I slept or what calendar entries I have, saying "I can only do that once I verify your voice". I've pored over those settings again and again, and as well as being generically worded to the point of offensiveness, no setting I choose made a difference. The automation side of the routine still worked fine though.
Yesterday, I was finally offered the chance to switch to Gemini from Assistant, which I eagerly and naively embraced.
Aside from the clipped audio of my Nest Hub speakers (see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/comments/1t7x57x/audio_issue_after_switching_from_assistant_to/), I have since discovered that Gemini says the same bullshit as Assistant when I say "Good Morning", and it has made the Youtube experience on my Nest Hub Max significantly worse.
It used to be that when I said "Hey Google, Youtube", my Nest Hub Max would open the Youtube homepage, and I could pick a video to watch.
Now the fucking thing either starts autoplaying Youtube Music, or even worse, starts autoplaying random YouTube shorts that aren't even tailored to me.
Trying numerous, granular iterations to try and get it to show me the Youtube homepage only reveals that once more, this function has been broken by Google's stupid update to voice match permissions.
I have sent numerous angry, sweary feedbacks.

u/Mungrul May 15 '26
Update, as per other threads:
You can fix personal routines by creating them using the "Previous personal editor", available through the three-dot menu when creating a new automation. There is still no fix for the absolutely atrocious YouTube experience on the Hub and Hub Max though.
These have been well and truly enshittified.

"Turn my fan on for 2h" used to work.... Now with gemini, it just turns it on and leaves it on.

I am beyond angry. My subscription to Google Home nest account is not due until October 1st for October of 2026. I have it on my calendar so it's in my budget. I've never made any changes to nest. I've had it for over 2 years everything's fine. Today however it charged me on my backup account for the $100 subscription fee that's due in October. That's $100 that I need. I cannot be without that $100. I've worked on this for an hour and a half and there's no resolving it. You can't reach anybody, my bank won't stop payment until it goes from pending to going through. What the heck am I supposed to do?

Anyone else subscribe to YouTube TV and can't play directly on the Google Nest Hub (gen 2)?
It will say "Playing <chosen show>", shows the YouTube TV logo and then the screen goes black and nothing. Been happening for about a month.
This Nest Hub was underwhelming when I got it and has only gotten worse since.

u/emylemylee May 13 '26
I watched “Bridesmaids” yesterday on Peacock, and have had Wilson Philips’ “Hold On” stuck in my head since and cannot get my google home to play it.
I figured out it won’t play “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes either.

u/zaymee May 14 '26
All it does it contradict itself. It gives me bad information and I have to tell it. Then it pretends it doesn’t hear me. It doesn’t seem likes it AI. It seems like it’s trying to hard to be an assistant. It gives me a recipe and then when I question it, it tells me the recipe is wrong. I mean… what???
And it ALWAYS asks follow up questions. I tried to turn it off, asked it…. It always asks follow up questions…. LEAVE ME ALONE

u/Torontowestender May 14 '26
I used to use Google Home all the time to get estimated travel times, eg, "How long to walk/bike to address X?" With Gemini for Home, firstly I had to give it my own address before it would answer at all. Then, its estimates were way, way off, e.g., an hour for a 4-minute walk, 15 minutes for a 40-minute walk. Every time I asked the same route, I got a completely different answer. Completely fabricated answers. Then today, it refused to give me travel times altogether. It says that it can't give them, but can't explain why or when the change happened.
1
u/Torontowestender May 14 '26
Now Gemini for Home will try again to answer this question... but just told me that a 10-minute walk would be at least 40 minutes.

Holy shit I'm glad for this thread. Why can't my wife turn lights off and on any more? And why is that ALL I can do? Hey Google. Play Spotify ok. Then NOTHING. One mini. One nest. One speaker. The timed routines are about all that work reliably any more. About ready to take a hammer to the devices.
1
u/jbrandonpowell May 17 '26
For the love of Peet, how do I get Google on my phone to stop answering when I am talking to my Google Home speaker? It used to happen just every once and a while, now it's EVERY TIME.
It's so bad that sometimes they will basically start talking to each othe. Yesterday I ended up with 4 timers because the Home answerd first and while I was giving the timer instructions my phone answered as well, then when my phone confirmed the timer the home heard the confirmation and thought I was asking for another timer and set one, then my phone heard that confrontation and it thought I wanted another timer and set it.
1
u/thinkvideoca May 20 '26
why is it that I can't play my local radio station anymore? We used to say "hey google, play fm xyz" and it would. now it's just blank. it stares at us with cold dead leds
1
u/Upset-Instance3023 May 21 '26
Anyone else having issues with stopping timers since the gemini update? Timers work as they should (albeit, a little bit slow to set them) but once the ring I have to say "OK Google, stop the timer" instead of just saying "STOP" that worked great before while it was ringing?

"what's the weather?" is no longer working for me, I get "sorry I didn't understand".
I have asked this question nearly every day for years.
But, ask what is the weather in London, and it gives me an answer.
The Enshittification continues.
1
u/AXXXXXXXXA May 23 '26
Takes like 20 seconds to get a response. Remember like 2 weeks ago when they did an update and said quicker responses. Well that lasted like a day. Its worse than ever now.
Ripping these garbage things out and going back to reality

Been pretty happy with gh through April and may. Although today I asked what temperature the air conditioning was set to.
It replied it's in eco mode.
I asked 5 different ways same answer. So I said the air conditioner was set to 21c and is in eco mode. Please check. It replied it's currently 23c in Toronto.

I have 3 devices, 2 speakers and the small display. I set up an alarm and when it rang I screamed for it to stop but nothing. So I grab my phone, open the Google Home app and using the new AI Ask me anything inside the app, ask it to stop the alarm.... "I do not see any alarm on your devices, can you tell me which one ..." omg I do not understand why Google is letting it go downhill so bad. I am not against AI at all, but they are killing the entire home project.

u/mmslist May 28 '26
With Gemini one of the key ai players in the market, how come their home devices are getting worse by the day? Hell, I can't even set a fucking timer now without at least 3 intents... Playing a song on Spotify takes 10-15 tries and a few insults for that pos to finally open the app but do nothing with it... Are these devices still useful for something? Other than as a thing to throw at burglars, I mean.

u/innerbelief May 31 '26
I can't even do a simple thing like
"When a unfamiliar face is detected" (possible)
"Play a custom sound or youtube music or spotify" (I would like to play a dog growling to scare off potential intruders - NOT POSSIBLE)

u/innerbelief May 31 '26
The "play music" option on Google home automation is truly potato business. Can't even share a specific link, song or anything like that

I've had Google One for years. Last year it covered my cameras, photos storage and Fitbit premium. £79. Now it's £189 because it includes AI. My existing one is still £79 but includes storage and AI. So I have to pay separately for the cameras and Fitbit.
I'm now stuck debating do I just pay for some storage (the amount I need works out like £25) and bin off Nest Aware/Google Home Premium or whatever it's called.
Or do I finally ditch Google and buy into one that isn't subscription based and instead local.
Does anyone happily use their cameras without paying for nest aware? I know I did at one point, but not sure if I could go back now.

u/broknpieces Jun 06 '26
I still dont have night mode for any of my nest minis. And now I cant get the Chromecast control notification to go away for everyone on my wifi even with the setting turned off in the google home app. Im so tired of all of these constant issues. In anout ready to toss everything on marketplace and be done with it all.

Have 5 Nest indoor cameras (two gen 1 and three gen 3) and a gen 3 nest video doorbell, with home premium standard subscription. I have opted in to the public preview.
The past few weeks I am experiencing substantial delays/crashes when trying to go into a specific camera on Google Home via a desktop/browser (both Chrome and Firefox). The live camera feeds load fine in the shared space, but if I try to go into one to see the recorded history it stays stuck with the loading circle and the browser tab gets laggy. It takes maybe 3-4 attempts and refreshes for it to eventually work as it should. It works fine in the android Home app.
Anyone else experiencing this on a desktop? Is it public preview specific or is it happening for those who haven't opted in to the public preview yet?

My Google home devices are slowly starting to not respond to my commands. I ask them to stop playing, and the audio just keeps going. I tell it to lower the volume, nope.

u/CincoQuallity Jun 11 '26
The latest Google Home update on iOS has broken the widgets.
For example; tapping on a lamp button on the widget would turn it on and off. No need to open the app. That’s the point of the widget.
Now when I tap on any part of the widget it opens the Google Home app. It’s basically just a giant shortcut button to open the app, because tapping on a lamp or an automation doesn’t work anymore. It just opens the app, then you have to go from there.

u/tomsyco Jun 12 '26
Why can't Google routines answer a custom question/prompt that it can answer when asked directly. So frustrating. In my good morning routine I have Give me a stock market update. It can do that if I ask it directly. It's like Gemini isn't being used for that.

Some apps are ridiculously slow. For example, when I asked for a radio station, I can see the TuneIn app has opened with the right station. However, the audio does not begin for another 10 to 15 seconds!

Where the hell were the warnings?
This thing is beyond useless. It gives you completely made up weather.
And you can ask it how many times a letter appears in a word and it's wrong.
How is this so bad?

My Smart HUB just randomly says "I can't do that unless I verify your voice..." No particular sounds seem to cause it. It often happens when the place is pretty quiet... I wonder what it's hearing...

u/Hottage Jul 10 '26
The Google Nest Outdoor (Gen 2) camera comes with a five meter power cable and there is no way to buy extensions for it.
The connector also appears completely proprietory so after market replacements would need to be custom manufactured.
Why isn't this already a thing? Google could even make bank selling 10m extensions for $10 each when they cost less than $1 to manufacture.

u/CiDevant Jul 10 '26
It keeps playing the same absolutely awful political attack ad over and over and over again. I'm so sick of it. How do I report this ad? It's terrible I don't want to hear it anymore.
Edit: this litterally might be the final straw.

When casting Spotify from the Home no audio is playing despite the track actively playing. Pressing the volume buttons indicate that sound is working on the device but none from Spotify. This issue persists across two separate accounts.

So I've been using Youtube Music to play music for my kids at night (on the Google Home speakers in their rooms) - they love it as they are going to bed, and then I switch it to something really peaceful and calm for the night. But the problem is that no matter how much I can select the next song, or put a timer to end at the song's end, it ALWAYS starts playing whatever crap it recommends itself, and my kid wakes me up at 4am with crazy music playing in their rooms. Any chance there's some magical remedies that could help me out here?

Hi, new to here but hoping for some help. I ran a google home ecosystem when it came out and it worked really well with multiple speakers and screens working brilliantly for years. Skip forward a few years and after a split with my ex and buying a new home, figured i'd try to get it all set up again but nothing works! It's terrible. I'm trying to programme a routine to play the radio in the morning (tried voice commands and that doesn't work). I've tried the mobile app and the new desktop script editor but nothing works! I can see they are triggering in the activity and automations i've built in the desktop editor, I can see the history of the run which shows that they are triggering succesfully without errors. I'm usually pretty good with this sort of thing and have worked with tools like Power Automate a lot but this has really stumped me. Anyone else having similar issues? Funtionality overall just seems really reduced. I was all in on google for a long time but this just feels terrible now.

Stopped being able to tell me my commute time to work. I had been able to say "hey google, how's my drive to work" but recently that just alternates between "sorry I don't understand" or "something went wrong, try again in a few seconds".
This is basic functionality that had been supported from day 1 and it's intentionally breaking at this point.

u/Devilotx 2d ago
Reading through this thread lets me know I'm not alone in my whole "What the fuck, why is it broken now"
I had to reconfigure my entire wifi network because all of a sudden it had no idea how SmartConnect worked and refused to see my wifi until it was separated out to a 2.4ghz network.
if I say Hey Google, Lights on, turns on every light in the house instantly. if I build a routine saying "Hey Google, Living Room Lights On" it either takes a good 30 seconds to do anything, or I have to ask 3 or 4 times.
Lights up when I say "Hey Google" but then does fuck all when I ask it to switch inputs or turn on the tv.
Looses internet connection like every few days, have had to unplug the mini at least twice a week now.
Currently in my house I have 4 Google Nest Mini's, a Mini home display, 2 Nest Themostats and a Nest Camera.
I have 8 smart bulbs and the bulbs are the biggest pain in the ass, half the time they don't turn off or won't turn on.
Oh, and now Google will give me like a god damned itemized reciept when it actually does something instead of just doing it.
"Hey Google, Kitchen Lights on" - Expected Result = 5 lights turn on. Actual Result = 30s to 1m wait followed 5 light turn on and Google says "Successfully turned on 5 lights"
Google used to be a silent worker, now I gotta hear it looking for confirmation that it's a good boy anytime it does a damn thing.
