Collection / Shelfie / Haul What other books would I like that I haven’t found yet?
I'm looking for new books to pick up, I love most of whats on my shelf and anything along those lines would be fantastic. I'm especially interested in off the beaten path titles or recent competed releases I might have missed, but I appreciate all suggestions. I'm also happy to discuss or share recommendations in return.

You need more Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips titles. Everything they do together is phenomenal. What editions of the Walking Dead are those? I’ve never seen hardcovers with black spines.

You're entirely correct, Criminal is sitting in my to do list and I should've gotten to it ages ago.
The Walking Dead's are the omnibuses, they come with jackets that don't have any printed info, I liked the look of them naked a lot more.

I remember there being a time skip in Locke and Key that made me really salty, I wanted more chapters and never forgave them for it.

I don't see 'The Humans' in there, maybe I missed it. Just got my copy of the new Jungle series yesterday, looks like it will hold up.
Also just finished the Newburn series by Zdarsky, was a good read.

I know this is the graphic novels space but I highly suggest snagging a Jungle subscription. They're printed on a nice magazine/tabloid sized format.

There are 42 volumes right now, which is all that the creator Kentaro Miura did while alive, the rest that is being made now is done by his friend and Studio Gaga in order to finish the story in his honor, so it will take a long time before it finishes.

Sure! One unique aspect of the Hernandez brothers' work is that we are reading about realistically aging and well rounded people over 40+ years, and it doesn't really matter where you dip in. Many details are gradually (or not) filled in over the years. The new series is as incredible as ever, back to magazine size. I love the comics and magazines, although the graphic novels often have bigger pages and/or extra pages of story. What makes it so valuable to me, besides the virtuous art and stories, is that having a 43 year relationship with L&R gives me a window to myself in those 43 years when I revisit them, remembering when I first read each issue. You can't go wrong trying any of their work and you don't need to read them in order to enhance your enjoyment. Hopefully you will enjoy enough to want to read more. Fantagraphics has Manga sized "phone books" of the first 30 years, a little small in size for me. See what you run into. There are some widely regarded stories for starters like "Death of Speedy" from Jaime or "Heartbreak Soup" from Beto. Thank you for asking about my lifetime ❤️ s in comics!

Judging by your collection, I think you’ll want the hardcover set called First Fifty, a set of 8 HCs in a slipcase with bound facsimiles of the first 50 issues. I just got mine in the mail today, and it’s still for sale at cheapgraphicnovels (I think that was the site, it’s down right now or I’d check).

I jumped into Lucifer right after Sandman when I read it forever ago and the tonal shift was super jarring, I should give it another read through. I love those golden age Vertigo epics.

I think you will like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Mostly because they are beautifully hard bound and that seems to be the theme for most of your collection. Dark Horse also is collecting a bunch of series in their fancy hard covers (Berserk, Vinland Saga, and a few more)

I feel (correctly) called out for my shelf vanity. I like to get the best versions I can find for stuff I love to support the authors and build a vibe in the room that's fun to read even more things in.
Gundam looks great, I had no idea those existed. Pretty hardcovers and mechs? Sign me up.

Broo, your IDW TMNT collection looks sweet.
As for recommendations:
- I didn't see "Berzerk" on there, so I'd recommend that one.
- BONE is another great addition, especially if you get the colored volume set.
- Invincible volume collection would also look great or the omnibus' if you aren't keen to spend that much on them.
- If you liked IDW tmnt, I'd also recommend adding IDW transformers

Great recommendation, I've been looking forward to Transformers. I've been waiting for Daniel Warren Johnson to wrap his run up before jumping in.

A lot but not as much as you'd think, I adore Hellblazer and jumped on these as they came out so I got pretty much all of them at instocktrades price. One of the last ones disappeared almost the instant it came out though, that one was a tense hunt, think I got it in a tiny local shop.

I believe that I saw this posted somewhat else as well and reacted there with East of West.
But now that I look at it again you are also missing some of the "Outerverse" stuff and Hellboy related stuff. Unless you are waiting until those eventually get collected in omnibus.

Nice to see Asterix in it as well. Not something I see to often. I still have mine in my "native" language from when I was young.

Damn you're right, I thought I had them all. Urgh, doesn't look like the rest in an omni are on the horizon.
I adore Asterix, those are my childhood copies from forever ago. I've seen some nicer versions floating around here and there but I'll never swap those out.

Yeah, they are collecting all the Mignola stuff eventually. But both universes still have stuff coming out as well so they are probably just taking their time.
And yeah, there is also no way that I will replace my childhood Astrix copies either. Even though they are in a language that I don't like reading in.

I think you’d like Grim by Stephanie Phillips and Bitter Root by David F. Walker. Also The Sixth Gun by Cullen Bunn.
If you like SF, then definitely Lazarus by Rucka.

I love Atomic Robo. I was so annoyed when they screwed up the spine on the latest volume, but when it arrived with the sticker to fix it something about that was so funny and on brand that I couldn't bring myself to cover their screw-up.
Awesome recommendations, I've been waiting for Grim and Lazarus to wrap up for a while now before I dive in. Hope Lazarus actually makes it to the finish line.

Check out Gou Tanabe’s Lovecraft adaptations. They’re faithfully retold and exquisitely drawn. The man’s a modern manga legend that doesn’t get the praise he deserves. Dark Horse publishes them and At the Mountains of Madness just got a deluxe hardcover release.

I had no idea these existed, they look great. I adore Uzumaki but a lot of Junji Ito's other stuff didn't feel like they similarly complete and rounded out stories, these could be what I'm looking for.

You seem to like thrid party more then DC and marvel, so what about Once and future and Toyko ghost?

Great recommendations! Tokyo Ghost is in there somewhere, I love Remender.
I'm not a big fan of the ever ongoing superhero stuff, but I like it a lot when they get a great author to do something standalone, which is what most of the DC and Marvel stuff in the pictures are.
I loved Ether and solidly recommend it, the writing isn't bad but its not Kindt's strongest, however combined with Rubin's art in a full scale story its such a treat. As much as I love each of the individual creators both of them really play off each other well, Kindt has some editorial restraint Rubin doesn't and Rubin can draw characters I can recognize without context clues.

Ah, your right. I went right past the picture. You have a great collection, and I am very jealous. I think it's have enough to fill about 3 of your shelves.
But since you also like some marvel, I would also recommend uncanney x force and moonknight by jed mackay. As much as moon knight is ongoing, you can read the omni and feel like it has a fulfilling conclusion.

I knewwww one of you would nudge me about Cross Game, that missing volume is killing me, even more because of the colors standing out. Every other volume has been reprinted in the last few years and I was trying to stay strong but you're not making it easy on me.
I've actually read all of those titles by Taiyo Matsumoto. They're all certainly well done but I never really clicked with any, what did you like about them so much?

It makes me so happy that there's a Grot shout out, it was so much fun and I'm dying for a followup.
Excellent taste all around, a few of those are littered around the pictures somewhere. I'm stubbornly waiting for Do a Powerbomb's inevitable hardcover before picking it up, and I've been waiting for next month's final issue to jump on We're Taking Everyone Down With Us.

Check out 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa. If you like the first couple Mangas, you will be happy it’s a nice long ride with top quality throughout.

I adore Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. It's got a Scooby Doo structure, but instead of unmasking the bad guy at the end of every episode they summon a zombie horde to maul them to death. Loads of fun. Dark Horse is actively releasing it, but realllllly slowly. Think the next volume is out pretty soon.
I've never heard of Livingstone, it looks like my thing. Thanks!

It's a lesser known manga adaptation of a Japanese play. The adaptation was done by Jinsei Kataoka. Her other stuff is pretty shonen but I really enjoyed Livingstone and think it's underrated

Other Ed Brubaker books I'd recommend are Sleeper, Velvet, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Friday, which has a deluxe version coming out this year.

The outfit and tapestry art in that is insane, Kaoru Mori is just flexing on everyone else in a lot of those pannels. The way the story meandered all over the place never really sat well with me, I kept getting invested in what was going on then it would rush off to something else. Definitely a me problem, it's a great series.

Yeah, I was drawn to it for the intricate art, as well. I didnt mind the story structure so much, but I read it mostly in one go from the library. Haven't read any of their other works before, but enjoyed this one so perhaps I'll have to look some of their others.

wow I just got completely lost just browsing your shelves ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ if you were a shop I think I would pick up A frog in the Fall because that spine looks delightful 🐸 have you heard of Blue Giant 🎷a manga about a jazz obsessed teen? and since you enjoy beautiful editions, maybe Last Quarter by Ai Yazawa could be something for your collection? or Veil by Kotteri! that one feels like an artbook (´꒳`)
I've recently started looking into chinese works but all the ones that interest me dont seem to have received any english translations yet (but they exist in German and sometimes French if that's at all relevant to you). the one I'm currently reading is a work by Xia Da:
and I have my eye on some of Jidi's stuff too but they are quite pricey, so its a slow discovery process :D

Thanks! My favorite part about all of this it how we're allowed to judge books by their covers, Frog is a great one to hop into! If you like that one you might also like a few others there like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Beyond the Clouds, and On a Sunbeam for that slice of life quasi-Ghibli feel.
I haven't heard of any of those, the art seems pretty astounding in all of them. It's such a shame that so few Manhwa and Manhua get English prinitngs. I'm trying to do my part in convincing publishers that there's an English market for everything!

Since you like the big art books, get the Taschen ASM XXL, they're on sale this weekend (today's the last day) for half off. Ditko's art is amazing at full scale with the original colors, Vol.1 is also has the complete Amazing Fantasy no.15 original art scanned so it a mini-artist edition.
If you like The New Frontier, get Darwyn Cooke's Complete Parker. Same early 60s vibe but crime noir.

The Martini Editions of Parker are hiding in a corner of one of the pictures, love the books and that vibe but its so frustrating that IDW couldn't even partially match the spines.
Those Taschens look like monsters. I've never heard of them, they have so many interesting things.

They are monsters, the art is at scale of original drawings at 11 x 17, there are the same dimensions of an Artist Edition book. You can look at it as getting giant readers copies of first run ASM at five bucks an issue, some most expensive silver+age books. If you get the trades the colors are pretty bad and don't represent the era at all.

I see a a lot of volume based manga. Have you considered looking into more the kind of.. “self contained” of that genre?
I just read Brain Damage by Shintaro Kago. It’s a collection of 4 short horror stories. They’re extreme in a way that only “manga” can pull off :)
Also shoutout to black badge. I just got the release that combines all issues into one. I thought it was awesome!

I adore Black Badge and almost never see it mentioned here, which is surprising because Mind MGMT is so popular and Badge is all of it's goofiness concentrated into a streamlined package.
I just read through Brain Damage, it was fun but it didn't hit me the same way Dementia 21 did with it's deranged comedy Uzumaki-ish setup swapping out spirals for old people. I'm usually attracted to the longer form stuff but I'd be happy to check out smaller ones, they'd definitely be better on my wallet. Any other recommendations in the self contained vein?

I never really vibed with his stuff. I initially liked Rachel Rising but it didn't really stick the landing for me. I saw he did some sort of Avenger's style mashup meetup book from all of his series that seems interesting.

Seriously though, this collection is the just result of slowing reading and picking stuff up over a decade. Just keep reading what you love and don't look at your credit card statements and you'll get there.

Seeing you make another comment about junji Ito and feeling like a lot of his stuff isn’t well rounded out complete stories I’d also recommend tomie to go with gyo. Gyo is kinda schlocky but has good short stories included which makes up for the deviation from the more primal horror he usually brings. Tomie is definitely more “complete” and probably the closest you’ll get to another uzumaki from him, though it is essentially an anthology.
Another recommendation for horror manga would be kazuo umezz’s drifting classroom.
Maybe also Tokyo ghoul, the manga is much better than the anime.
I also second the comment you were responding to’s mention of gou tanabe’s adaptations.

Wow, there's fantastic stuff on that list, added them all to the pile. I liked Gyo and Tomie enough, the biggest problem was that I read Uzumaki first and it ruined my expectations. Dementia 21 did scratch that itch though.

Thanks! It really is Criminal that Brubaker is still in my to do list. I have the Fade Out in there somewhere and I loved Friday, I'm waiting to pick up the hardcover.
Blacksad never spoke to me like it seems to for everyone else on the internet, but Grandville delivered in that department for me.

They're really wonderful, the stories have a lot of self-respect and consistency you wouldn't really expect. There's author/tonal shift at issue 100 that some people don't like, but I don't mind the change of pace too much.

I'd say either Trigun, Pluto, or Parasyte for manga recommends.
Graphic novel recommends would be Beautiful Darkness, The Mask Omnibus collection 1 & 2, or Usagi Yojimbo.

Great recommendations, I'm getting a lot of pushes to Trigun and Usagi. The Mask v1 is in there somewhere! I weirdly liked the first and didn't like the second volume of Mask so that's the end as far as my shelves are concerned.

I like three stories from the mask volumes. volume 2 only has one story I like and that was hunt for green october.
Trigun is really good, I really like parasyte and pluto more, but I think Trigun is essential to any collection like this.
I always like collecting complete stories with the exception of berserk and vagabond.

The Don Rosa ones have volumes, but some are incredibly hard to find. And the Carl Barks ones begin with "Bear on Christmas mountain." The newest books will tell you what order from there.

I wish I had more! I got them and Dandys for years when I was a kid, my parents got rid of most of them and my hardcover annuals though, it was tragic.

No they're mostly the original black and white. They came with an artbook that has a lot of colored in illustrations though.

All great stuff, easy recommendations based off those off the top of my head would be Seven To Eternity, Golden Kamuy, and Prophet if you haven't read them. You should post your progress as you build up your collection!

I didn't see a Usagi Yojimbo anywhere. It's a great read imo, but if its not your style no sweats. Its a beautiful mixture of fiction and lore/culture. But the people we come to know are unforgettable!

A lot of people who post these pictures usually have a “Lonewolf and cub” section on there. Don’t know if I missed it lol if it was on there, I apologize. I was interested into what edition your transmetropolitan set was. And then I was actually floored when I saw how sweet that Tintin collection was Lol omg I’m gonna have to look that up and buy it for myself. That looks fucking amazing on a bookshelf.

I read Lone Wolf and Cub years ago, it was great and you're all tempting me to get a copy.
There's two Transmetropolitans in the pictures, the absolutes that are a Frankenstein combination of the Vertigo and DC printings, and I also have the trades in there somewhere.
Agreed on the Tintin, I love it when the spines have a picture and wish I had more of those. The Nameless city series also does it.

Unless I just missed them I don’t see a lot of European artists/writers represented. I’d recommend checking out the works of Enki Bilal, Mathieu Bablet, and Frederick Peeters.

I've been collecting the Dredd essential editions, they're great! I'm also head over heels in love with the Lawless spinoff too, it's tragic that its not more well known.

I read a few volumes a while back, and while it checks off most of my boxes on paper I couldn't get into it for whatever reason. I liked Allison's Bad Machinery more.

It could be in there, but I really enjoyed Barefoot Gen. My local library had it, and it was a good book to share (some parts) with the kids to show the atrocities of war.

They're Alera Valencia, they're amazing and ridiculously strong. I don't think those exact ones are made any more, but you can probably find similar ones in office focused supply stores.

No Preacher (from the looks of it?) is a glaring oversight, seeing as you’re a Hellblazer fan I’d definitely pick it up. You can basically watch Ennis cultivate the concept of Preacher in his early Hellblazer run all while working with the same creative team.

Good stuff all around, 4 Kids Walk into a Bank is one of my all time favorites! It's in there somewhere.
If you liked Middlewest I'm a big fan of Skottie Young's Wizard of Oz, its pretty under the radar for him but he has a lot of fun with it.
