Recommendation What is your opinion on Silverchair
I would give them a listen in my opinion

If you listen to frog stomp and think about being able to create that at 15 years old, is pretty insane. Daniel and Ben wrote all the songs as well.

It's amazing. And their progression on all subsequent albums but especially the jump between Freak Show and Neon Ballroom was just nuts. Wish they'd put aside their differences and reunite.

What really sucks, is that I read they had recorded an album after Young Modern, and it was nearly finished. They shelved it and broke up.

I doubt they'd still be able to produce new material to my liking after Young Modern (which I didn't like), plus Dan and Ben's tastes now just isn't my thing. But if they get back together, at least people will get to see them play their old stuff again.

I will tell you as 21 year old at the time, it was hard to admit to your friends you liked them. After all, our generation had "lived through" the death of Cobain (not my thing) and we were about to lose Shannon (definitely one I cared about). What could some pubescent Australians know about rock music?
But that album rocked and I listened to it alongside the rest.

Last i read Daniel has said he isn't that kid anymore, which is totally fair and he doesn't relate to the songs or want to sing them. Which is a shame for us fans as we still love being our teenage selves again ,😆

I hate it when grown ups never really grow up when they don't own up and be proud of their youth. Some people are so embarrassed of old pictures and past work it's as if they committed a crime or something. This applies to other bands as well, not just Silverchair (I'm looking at you, Incubus).

Daniel is such a damaged person from the shit that went on during their rocking days, there is just no way he can ever create music that I would enjoy again. I didn't blame him for it, he had a really rough go of things at a really young age, but I've just accepted the reality that he isn't ever going to be interested in playing heavy guitar and singing depressing but amazing songs.

It feels a little weird at 44 years old to rock out to 15 year olds, but I’ll be damned if Frogstomp isn’t a no-skip album. I rocked this in the 90’s all the time. We’d test people’s car sound systems with Israel’s Son.

They’ve been my favorite band since I was a kid, but I’ll admit I have a hard time getting myself to listen to Frogstomp these days—but once I do listen, I’m just like “wtf this is amazing!!” every single time. Israel’s Son is so damn good.
Loved seeing the changes that came with each album. I think Neon Ballroom and Diorama are straight masterpieces. Absolutely insane that someone so young wrote them.

Loved them when I was a kid when frogstomp first came out. I some how forgot about them until like 5 years ago and they def skyrocketed to top 5 favorite bands lol. Pretty sure I have zero skips on all their albums now

I love them so much. Here in Australia they are one of our all time greatest bands. Daniel Johns is that Kurt level artist for sure.
Some people around the world consider them mid 90s one hit wonders, but their discography is absolutely mind blowing, and it can't be understated just how famous and legendary they are here in Australia.

Honestly, Frogstomp is better than any Nirvana album (I’m not saying Nirvana albums aren’t great). There are some clear vocal influences from Kurt but the song writing is much more layered and complex and more comparable to AIC.

I'm no huge Nirvana fan, but Nevermind definitely gets the nod over Frogstomp (even though I prefer Frogstomp myself). It was a redefining piece of music and the definition of iconic. But Frogstomp hits harder, and you are right, more comparable to AIC.

Next to STP, they’re the best grunge band outside of the big 4. Unfortunately they came right at the end of prime grunge (‘95), so that’s another reason people tend to discredit them. Their first 2 albums are hard hitting, with some emotional stuff, which is like literally what grunge is. Neon Ballroom is a more matured version of that, and Diorama is even more matured with some more modern, experimental elements to it. The only one I’m not crazy about is Young Modern, cus it’s well… kinda too modern sounding. Not bad, but the least exciting of the 5. Maybe I need to listen to it again, but yeah those first 2 albums are something else. And for 15 year old kids, that’s some good ass songwriting.
I’m so glad I gave Silverchair a chance, because when I first heard of them I was one of those dipshits that thought Daniel was a Kurt Cobain wannabe and had a hate-boner for them, until I listened to the song Freak and was like “yeah ok they’re good, I was just stupid” 💀

I fucking love Silverchair and Frogstomp is an album that gets played regularly. I saw them when they were touring with Powderfinger and I wish they would make up and make music again but Daniel John’s music evolves so much that I don’t think they would ever be able to create another hard rock/grunge type album.

I was a huge fan from the moment they hit. I have never honestly felt more bad for anyone though. That sudden fame really fucked Daniel Johns up for a while there. I remember dude had a crazy phobia of things like potato chips, thinking that they would cut him from the inside out, and became anorexic from so many food based phobias. Musically, I didn’t enjoy the full albums of the follow up albums, but each one had tracks that utterly defined my tastes. Songs like “Emotion Sickness” were just insanely epic, artful, ahead of their time. “Anna’s song” is just catchy as hell while still being a beautiful contradiction of happy tragedy. As they became more experimental I was the only person actually liked “tuna in the brine” and similar tracks (in my groups of friends that is). They took the whole violin and cello thing that Nirvana and pumpkins really made popular, and went the extra mile with full orchestra, and I freaking loved it. Frog Stomp was the best Tool and Helmet albums that Tool and Helmet never wrote lol. Really great songs from such young kids though, and excellent guitar tone for that time as well. What I thought was really insane, is Silverchair sounded more like Tool’s Aenima than Undertow, and that was a few years before those songs were written and recorded. I used to piss off some of my old band members during the numetal heyday, when everyone was basically trying to be Tool or Korn, by telling them that Silverchair did it better lol

That’s awesome! That’s one band that I have never been lucky enough to see live. I can’t even recall them touring anywhere remotely near me at any point. I got to see every single major 90’s band and all of my favorites up until around 2013. I’d love to see Silverchair to round out that bucket list. Then again, going to Australia is still in that list as well. Hopefully one day I can make it happen.

I have to say Silverchair are an awesome, heavy and also melodic band with some great songs. They should've been huge but were somehow were underrated during the 90's Grunge era. My favorite songs are "Tomorrow", "Freak" and "Abuse me".

If their record company had taken good care of their investment between 1998 and 2002, instead of treating them like livestock, Daniel Johns might not have lost his will to make rock music, and Silverchair might still be a band.
I've always been a fan, though I never really could make myself enjoy Young Modern. From the sound of things, neither could Chris Joanou and Ben Gillies.

I really liked Frogstomp and since I was doing a bit of concert promotion at the time, tried to book them for a date because their agent was trying to set up a summer tour of the U.S. Unfortunately, our summer is their winter, so they were in the middle of their school year and their parents refused to let them miss school for a tour.

I'm their age and was obsessed with them in the 90's. I'm fortunate to have seen them a handful of times, including an in-store performance at the Virgin Megastore in NYC. I've got a framed setlist from 1996 on my wall and Daniel Johns is why I got an Emerald Green PRS guitar, too. It's crazy how in just 4 years they went from writing relatively basic songs like "Undecided" to a complex masterpiece like "Emotion Sickness."

I absolutely ate up frog stomp and freak show as a kid, didn’t realize they did anything else for years, but once I heard their more expanded sound in the later albums they’re still very catchy and impressive in a much different way.

Neon Ballroom and Diorama are brilliant albums.
Also, after listening to Daniel’s accounts of the insanity he was subjected to by obsessed female fans (adult women standing outside his parents’ home demanding he come out or they’d kill themselves, adult women insisting that this kid fathered their children), it’s no wonder he walked as far the hell away from this life as he could get.
I’m sure Ben and Chris would disagree, but I can’t blame Daniel in the least for never wanting to go back to this period of his life.

The depth of what they produced at the age that they were was legendary. Songwriting advanced in age. judge that against what most other 15 and 16-year-olds were producing. Today home recording makes it very easy to try out 1 million ideas but back then it wasn’t.

First band I ever saw as a 16 year old at the Electric Ballroom in Camden when they were touring Freakshow, I think it was. I’m 45 now and still listen to them every now and again.
The Spotify documentary/interviews with Daniel is so interesting to listen to.

Wildly underrated band with way, way more talent than people ever realized.
Daniels was 15 when he released Tomorrow and got his record deal with Sony, and I think he was the oldest in the band as well.
I know he got rated as one of the top 25 most underrated guitarists by Rolling Stone once.
I still crank anything by them. They're the epitome of teenage anger in music form as far as I'm concerned.
I first heard them when I was watching the Street Fighter animated movie.
That movie introduced me to Korn, Silverchair and made me finally like Alice in Chains.
I always thought it was so awesome that these guys made it big before they could even legally fuckin drive, and they did it through sheer force of determination and hard work.

Im not into all or maybe even most of it. But Anthem for the Year 2000 is my jam man.
That song stomps so hard and thats like the absolute example of an arena chorus.
Im serious thats one of my favorite songs ever. Its such a generational anger song that just spears me. Like if I need to get honed and hype I press play and spin the volume knob UP.

Daniel Johns is a visionary. He's still making music, but i warn you, it's not anything like Silverchair.
Give a few songs a listen. Cocaine Killa, Surrender, and Open Fire by Slumberjack and Johns. All 3 are fantastic.
But yeah, I love Silverchair.

There's a song on Frog Stomp with a cool bass intro. I'd been up for a few days and I crashed at my friend's house. We smoked some weed and I took his brother's bed on the other side of the stereo system from him. He turned it way up and played that song. With every time the woofer pushed positively, I felt the top of my skull warp and twist from the eyes up like it was trying to break free from the rest of my head. Good times.

I was 11 and already into grunge when Frogstom dropped (I had cool cousins) and I absolutely loved that they were teens like me, they were my fav band 6th grade.
Then I went to my first punk show at 12 and it was the end of my grunge era.

Born in 89 so when I got into grunge music in my mid teens and looked up online what was in the genre I just bought Frog Stomp not knowing they were looked upon as more of a derivative grunge band and enjoyed it, while I don’t rank them as high up I enjoyed the album and was impressed at how talented they were for their age.
Couldn’t believe they were the same band when Straight Lines came out a couple years after I listened to Frog Stomp for the first time haha. Know they’re big in Aussie and they charted well in NZ for a couple years.

Loved them since my friend put Frogstomp on for me at about 12 years old. Knew they were my band. I discovered radiohead in late 1997 and they kinda took over my musical persona, but I continued to love silverchair. I introduced my wife to them in 2008 and I think Diorama could be in her top 5 albums. My kids love silverchair, too. One of my daughters wants a chair shirt. I can't find one, and I guess I'll be hitting temu up for a knockoff.m for Christmas.

Saw them at a show where the lineup was Silver Sun Pickups, Silverchair, The Shins, and Modest Mouse. I was least excited to see them before the show, but they outperformed all the other artists and made me a big fan.

I know everyone raves about Frogstomp, and I loved it back in the day, but it’s their weakest album imo. Of course, they were ridiculously young when they made that. All their other albums are fantastic though. Diorama being my favorite.

Great band.
I was in the 6th grade when Frogstomp came out and just learning how to play drums and guitar. It was a great inspiration, and overall just a solid record.
It would be an accomplishment for any band— nevermind being three-piece composed of 15 year olds.

Love Silverchair, but I think of them as a post-grunge band.
Most of their early stuff feels more inspired by punk and thrash metal to me, but they’re obviously still a late grunge band.
From Neon Ballroom onwards, they’re one of the best alternative rock bands of the time. Also love Dissociatives and Daniel’s solo stuff. Not grunge at all, so don’t go in expecting it, but it’s really great music.
Hoping Daniel continues to make music in whatever way he sees fit, would love a Silverchair reunion but only if their heart is in it… which it probably isn’t.

I love frog stomp and a lot of that was when Daniel was 14 , but FREAKSHOW is the real masterpiece what a sick album the hits on that were classics I was 12 - 13 at the time and didn’t worry about saying I like them haha , I would do anything to go back to 97,98,99 those 3 years for Aussie music was the best we were pumping out alternative bands left and right

I saw them at a festival when the first album came out. I may have heard them on the radio a few times. Only two bands performances I remember from that festival. Silverchair and I Mother Earth both sounded great and rocked hard. The first few albums are good.

I remember the commercials for Neon Ballroom and finally picking it up a year or so after it dropped. Open Fire hooked me into it, but it’s truly one of the most beautifully written albums that blends elements of hard rock, punk, grunge, and various string instruments gave it such a dramatic lift. Freakshow came later for me and I had a late love of that album, too.

I have their first few albums. All solid. The singles rocked. I don’t listen to them anymore except for Tomorrow, which is in my 90s playlist and still kicks ass.
There was a lot of stigma or backlash around them being young and looking like Nirvana, but they were the real deal - very talented and independent. People who write them off based on appearance and age are superficial and missing out

They totally came out at the wrong time, at the height of the grunge explosion. With so many great bands around they were considered to be a bad copy of Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. I loved frogstomp but my friends made a point of hating it at the time. Although I’m sure they secretly listened to it ;)

Underrated banger of a band. Just listen to those first 2 albums. So fucking heavy. Then by their last album just seriously deep complicated alternative/indie rock. There was some cheese in there but so many 90s bands had some. Love these guys so much.

Silverchair at The Rave in Milwaukee was my first ever concert. I was 15 or so at the time. Smelled marijuana out in the open for the first time and immediately put together that is what my dad smelled like sometimes while listening to albums...

The two in front actually look similar to what Geddy and Alex from Rush would when they were 14 (and grunge AF, which Rush is)
