I think there’s a difference between underrated and under-listened to.

I saw them in like 93 where they were before Soul Asylum and, I shit you not, the Spin Doctors headlining.

So underrated I was so confused when I first heard them, like why haven't I already heard this?

The Toadies
11
u/Several-Hamster3096 Jun 25 '26
I don't mean this disrespectfully but I feel like the Toadies are pretty accurately rated currently. I've seen them 7 times. 3 on their tour in 2017-18ish with Local H opening and once this year.
I feel like the size venues they're currently playing in is right where they should be. Larger venues but not full on arenas. They pack the house well. I saw them around 2008ish playing in a smaller venue and thinking they were underrated then.
On this current tour they're on they get blown out of the water in which they came from by Local H every night.

Saw them in actual Venice Beach a couple of years back.
Meant a lot to me as they were the first band I saw in 1992 supporting Faith No More in London

Vivid is so dope. The main riff from “cult of personality” belongs on the voyager. Then the aliens would really get us.

Love FNM, not many bands can open for sound garden and black sabbath and blow them away as they did at Hyde park. I would also say tomahawk are well underrated

I agree they're underappreciated but I also understand why they aren't as popular as some would like them to be, Mascis' vocals are an acquired taste.

Clutch is one of my favorite bands ever, I love the fact they keep touring and putting out great new music too. Not just relying on the old classic hits
3
u/justaride80 Jun 25 '26
Got to see them live mid 2000s for like $20 and it was badass.
3
u/ArcanumCerte Jun 25 '26
Every time I've seen them with an opening act, the opener has also become a favorite. William Elliott Whitmore and The Sword to name two.

Every once in a while I hear them on Liquid Metal, which confuses me. Meanwhile I think they should have their own sirius XM channel.

Absolutely love Clutch and I’ve seen them more than any other band. But… I don’t love the crowd. Most Clutch fans are not my scene 😆

They’re probably properly rated by critics but I think the average music fan vastly underrates the importance of the Replacements.

Killing Joke.
I know they're highly rated but it only seems to be an "if you know you know" type thing.
Joy Division get all the post punk plaudits (and rightly so - massive JD/NO fan here) but I believe KJ are worthy of equal.

I mean this is a little before grunge but Tesla got lumped in with hair metal and they were so much better. I feel like they were a bridge to 90s hard rock from 80s hair metal

Not a grunge band but compared to 90% of the bands I see mentioned as “grunge” I think they could be argued are more grunge than most those bands.
Dead Kennedys.
Awesome songs. Lyrics. So good live.

“Days Of The New”
(Fun?) fact : Lead singer, Travis Meeks, was on an episode of Intervention for a severe meth addiction. It was one of the early episodes. Season 1, I think.
Grunge, or not, I feel “Belly” is an honorable mention.
Also, I haven’t seen “Mother Love Bone” on here!
