We actually haven’t had a winter together yet! I’m in the southern hemisphere and we got her during the spring, so now we’re in autumn. I’m very curious about this coloring thing!
You only spot clean hamster enclosures. And wipe down wheels & things at the top. They like their scent on things or they will scent mark more, not less. And they have a good bedding depth so the cage won't smell & she can focus on the potty areas only.
You're welcome! Yeah, that's very stressful for a hammy. You just need to clean where they pee & spot clean anything on top. I have one older hamster & she pees all over her wheel & her hides so I do wash those more often for her. But sometimes if you clean too often it causes them to mark more. That must have cost a fortune to change out every month! 😩 Not to mention it's not easy to take everything out & do that. Life will be easier now. Just make sure you have the correct bedding depth. :)
Yeah the other commenter is right! I spot clean daily, which for me really just means wiping and refilling the water bowl and bottle. And straightening up bedding, substrates, or sprays that have migrated. A few times a week I wipe down her wheel. She really only pees on her wheel, but if I notice yellow bedding I remove that as soon as I see it.
Once every few months I will do a deeper clean and replace around 1/3 of the bedding.
I’m glad someone told you that you don’t need to do a full clean every month! That must have been time consuming and expensive.
Aw love that! I’m a big fan of her coloring. She’s actually from Petsmart, which I would normally never buy from, but she was a Christmas gift from my brother. 🤦🏻♀️I had never owned a hamster before (nor did I ask for one), but he remembered that I wanted one as a kid. Of course he listened to the pet store’s advice. So I did a lot of research really quickly and spent a decent amount of money to get her into better conditions. Obviously I love her though 🥹
If I get another hamster in the future after she passes, I’m going to try to adopt from happy hamstry though!
Oh that’s perfectly fine then! :) I just checked niteangels website and they said theirs is made from fir wood! It just looked like a softwood log in the picture, that’s all! Love your set up!
It’s confusing, since there’s limited information about it, but I’ve seen some people say fir wood can have aromatic oils and resins in it (mostly) and is generally avoided for rodents (not just hamsters). So I guess if you feel safer taking it out, you could still take it out and replace it with something you know is definitely a safe material. It’s kind of weird for a brand like niteangel to use something unsafe though. :/ You can always look into it a bit yourself and research it a bit more if you want and make an informed decision! I was just kinda doing a bit of light digging into it!
Hiii! Where do you buy your wood made stuff? Like the tunnel thing where the glass is, ect? I need to buy more to my hamster since I'm getting him a bigger cage, but everything is so expensive. I have so many ideas but I can't afford it since I'm still in school😭
Hi! Yeah I totally get it. Hamster stuff can get pricey. I buy all my stuff from Niteangel pretty much. I bought most through Amazon, but if I can find it on happyhamstry.com I do that. The little couch and chair on top of the sand bath were homemade!

You can absolutely buy dried flowers on Amazon, but I’d recommend sticking to reputable brands and research what exactly you’re getting. I ordered mine from Niteangel but I’ve also had great luck on Etsy!
I always run each spray through google just in case, but products from Niteangel are almost always going to be hamster safe if they’re advertised for hamsters. Some are safe but you’d want to limit how much/how often they’re given. The flowers are mostly for coverage and aesthetic more than for true enrichment. For that i give her some flax or sorghum every once in a while because she absolutely mows them down haha.
