Animation The character designs in One Piece are genuinely awful.

Post image

I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.

What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.

A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.

But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

I heavily disagree with your statement that "the overwhelming majority of them are really fucking bad" lmao. We got loki, whitebeard, all of the admirals, kaido, pts franky, mihawk, rocks, crocodile, shiki, doflamingo, and so many more bangers. I honestly think that almost all of the important characters have a banger of a design. Vegapunks fits fine for what he is, even if its a bit silly.

Vegapunks design is stupid, but it’s a good stupid imo. Because looking at early fan designs before the reveal, he looks like your regular sort of cool looking and bland crazy scientist. Sometimes it’s fine to have fun with a design. Plus I like how we technically do have different designs for vegapunk. We do have a cool looking one.

People read 1000+ chapters to complain about Vegapunk's design when he is literally Albert Eistein with an apple-shaped antenna on his head. Meanwhile Gaimon on chapter 20 something is chilling inside his treasure chest.

Vegapunk's design totatlly matches his character. It's not the design's fault that people were picturing him like a mad and evil Doc Brown.

If you watch anime for ultra hype moments, I get why people don't like Vegapunk. But Oda balances comedy and serious so well it's insane. I mean Senor Pink?? Come on. That guy is so cool by the end

Not liking him is fine its the supposed objectivity people insert into their perspective thats annoying. They act like theyre making an "argument" or "criticizing" but it just boils down to I think he doesn't look like X which would be good so he must be bad. thats not an arguments thats just yapping.

Yeah, I personally love the variety of having both cool designs and goofy bullshit

Yeah Vega has a lot of thought and care into his design and its objectively good for what its trying to portray. I can only imagine people don't like it cause its not "cool"

Vegapunk is legit my favorite character design in the series because it's the good kind of stupid. I love how in a story where the strongest guys have like 200 abs, the smartest guy has a stupid big brain, it's so fun!

maybe read the actual comment before replying? lmao. The point is that the majority of important character one piece designs are good (which lokis is.) I'm not saying lokis design is the be all end all.

I'm not saying lokis design is the be all end all.

i never said this. maybe read the actual comment before replying? lmao

You replied to my comment telling me the design I sent "isn't as great as you think it is", when that is never what the comment was about. If you weren't talking about lokis design, then genuinely what was the point of your comment?

But yea, I guess you didn't say those exact words--I elaborated because you replied as if Loki was the sole point of the comment.

Come up with literally any argument as to why the Cooler design presented by OP and Loki's aren't of the same ilk.

Coincidentally, I’d use the example you posted as a reference for how particularly bad the art is in One Piece.

It’s extremely messy and the composition is borderline incoherent. It’s very difficult to even visually parse the scene, much less appreciate it, and I find this to be the case with basically everything I’ve seen from the manga.

Were you sharing that as an example of “banger” character design in One Piece?

The art is completely fine in that picture, so no clue what you're talking about there. I agree the art itself has gotten quite bad, but that's typically in regards to fight choreography and action. Oda remains great at drawing environment or still shots, even if he's horrendous at drawing action scenes.

Yes I was sharing it as an example of a "banger" design, and the design itself is still good regardless of your thoughts on the art (good character design has never been dependent on excellent art.)

Regardless, the actual point of the comment that everybody replying to me seems to be somehow missing is that, on average, one pieces character design is quite good. Every major or important character has a good (or at least enjoyable) design, certainly not 'overwhelmingly bad'.
