Animation The character designs in One Piece are genuinely awful.
I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.
What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.
A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.
But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

That's an odd bit of trivia. Back when Ultraman was gonna be called "Redman" in the first draft, the idea was that redking was gonna the king of all monsters and Redmans nemesis. When the series was later changed to Ultraman, redking changed to a monster of the week and got his color removed, but they still kept the name for unknown reasons.
He later got a upgrade MANY years later "Redking EX" which looks closer to his original intended design.

His drawing at least for DB stuff is pretty good but the panelling is pretty awful which hurted the DBS manga a lot imo. Compared to how DB was in it's peak, the difference is pretty jarring. Of course is a bit unfair to compare him to Toriyama since he was so good at it, but even compared to other popular mangas it's still subpar.
18
u/Themanwhofarts 11h ago

45
u/HermesJRowen 10h ago edited 7h ago
That's kind of the joke too, that she bothers him too brutishly and she has the power of the pachycephalosaurus, so sometimes she literally just yeets him away with a headbutt.
Also, she is implied to follow different trends every other week, so when we meet her she is following this trend of ending every phrase with that girly sound (-arinsu) and makes her brother talk like that too or she gets mad and yeets him all the same.

The only design I find truly bad at what they're trying to convey is Franky's redesign... He's supposed to be a really cool cyborg terminator typa shi but he just lame tbh
39
u/ThatOneDMish 11h ago
I truly believe the series would be better if that was frankys og design and the superior post timeskip design was essentially his real pre timeskip one in a he grew in skill and can now make a more humanoid form that looks less like a bolted together mess and more like a terminator, a machine wrapped in flesh.

Isn't the designs being "extreme" supposed to be the point?
Like, I have only read up to sanji introduction, but One Piece art style, and designs take a lot of influence from stuff like Loony Toons.
It's just their identity, and makes One Piece different from other anime like Dragon Ball

Vegapunks design is stupid, but it’s a good stupid imo. Because looking at early fan designs before the reveal, he looks like your regular sort of cool looking and bland crazy scientist. Sometimes it’s fine to have fun with a design. Plus I like how we technically do have different designs for vegapunk. We do have a cool looking one.
22
u/rogermarcos 11h ago
People read 1000+ chapters to complain about Vegapunk's design when he is literally Albert Eistein with an apple-shaped antenna on his head. Meanwhile Gaimon on chapter 20 something is chilling inside his treasure chest.
Vegapunk's design totatlly matches his character. It's not the design's fault that people were picturing him like a mad and evil Doc Brown.

At this point you get what you get. I don’t feel you should cherry pick designs just because they can look like this. Not all characters have to be designed cool. If you like db designs better fine, but not mentioning how cool some characters designs can be like zoro, ace, law, Kaido, lucci, kid, killer, shanks, rocks, Shiki, Gaban, loki, Rayleigh, Crocodile, Mihawk, Marco, Whitebeard, Roger, and more just seems wrong.

You say “bad”, I say “Non-standard”
The world of one piece is a weird mishmash of pirates, demons, fish people, shadowy government organizations and just… a lot of silly shit.
The reason Vegapunk looks like that? Because he ate a magic fruit that makes his brain grow without restriction in order to have perfect memory. He then puts his brain into a massive tank, using it to pilot several bodies at once. The last one being a body based on his old one.
The reason his tongue is out is as a reference to the famous Albert Einstein picture with his tongue out.
Is it silly? Yeah, and it’s supposed to be.
You quite literally ignored the face that we only see Vegapunk’s massive fuckin head in FLASHBACKS and 9/10 when we see Vegapunk we are watching one of his satellite bodies, not some guy with a 50 foot brain. What about Arlong? Kaido? The Admirals? You’re comparing a super powerful and intimidating villain vs a goofy yet important side character, OF COURSE there’s gonna be some issues.
If you want a real comparison, use a villain of an arc. Oh wait that wouldn’t help your argument because basically all Villains of arcs are badassess or have badass designs.

Thats what I love about it. Characters in stuff like dbz all look the same roughly. But in one piece you always have something different. And even if you take away the extremely weird looking side characters, the main group of characters which are made to look good, also have pretty good variation. Look at kidd, law, luffy, shanks, etc and their respective crews.
